Zelda II: The Adventure of Link (NES) Playthrough - NintendoComplete

- A playthough of Nintendo's 1988 action-adventure game for the NES, Zelda II: The Adventure of Link.
Zelda II, much like Super Mario Bros. 2, was a bit of an odd duck. Both titles were follow-ups to some of Nintendo's most successful games, but instead of adhering to the styles established in originals, they were brand new gameplay experiences. It was a bit of a risky gambit in both cases, but it paid of handsomely in both cases, as did the hype generated by the huge shortage of both titles in America during the 1988 holiday season.
Zelda II still revolves around Link's adventures in Hyrule, but this time Zelda is playing the part of Sleeping Beauty, and she can only be wakened by the power of the Triforce.
Instead of playing solely from a top-down perspective like in The Legend of Zelda, Zelda II spends most of it's time as a 2D, side-scrolling platformer. There are now towns full of people to talk to and quests to fulfill, and though it still retains many of the exploration aspects of The Legend of Zelda's gameplay, this one is far more focused on dungeon-crawling and fighting.
As most people will tell you though, Zelda II pulls no punches in its difficulty. The platforming is tricky, but the enemies are merciless. It doesn't take too many times whiffing a sword strike to lead to your demise, though the Ganon/Soda Popinski laugh on the game over screen is pretty unforgettable. The enemy patterns are pretty unforgiving here, and you have to have your timing down, or you'll die often. It's not unfair, but it can be fairly rage-inducing at times. I've always found it to be one of Nintendo's hardest first-party games.
But it is fun, and it is a worthy follow-up to the original. The graphics and sound were terrific upgrades despite the game's age (Zelda II was released in Japan well before America ever got Zelda 1!), and the towns added a much-needed feeling of being "lived in" to Hyrule, and some of the Engrish-dialogue is quite meme-worthy.
It's amazing that Nintendo managed to so successfully create a sequel that broke with expectations in so many fundamental ways, but there is no denying that Zelda II was a smashing success and a damned good game.
I wonder how many NES controllers met their end because of this game?

No matter how great the graphics become or even game play nothing will ever compare to being an 80's kid and experiencing the birth of it all. Truly magical.
agree
Or 90s kid discovering your bro's snes as your first console
I was an '80's kid too, and beat LOTS of NES games. And I mean A LOT.
My dad's in his mid 40s and loves playing breath of the wild🤟🏼
@@thefknscarecrow I still need to get a Nintendo Switch. :)
I always loved how Link would go inside a house with a super hot babe and be magically “healed” while in there
As a kid playing the game I didn't get the innuendo of the woman restoring Link's life force!😂 Now as an adult it makes perfect sense!
He also went into a house with a really old lady
@@Onthebrink5 Link doesn't discriminate.
lol damn never noticed that...also amusing how the lady tells link to "come inside" lol
I started just now and since I was confused thats why im here but when I saw that I had a good laugh, its quite unique way of healing lol
12:56 my thumb hurts just watching the amount of time being spent killing those floating skulls. I remember just skipping them.
I must have played this game when I was 8 and never got to finish it. 30 years on and here I am watching the walkthrough...... Oh the nostalgia!!!!
Same here bro. Still have the game and still haven't finished it myself.
I also started when I was 8.... went back at age 27 and finally finished it! My heart was still racing almost 2 decades later while fighting Link's shadow👤
I played this as a kid when it came out and could not finish it. I finally finished it last year at the ripe old age of 45 with an emulator and frequent save states.
It's one of the hardest nintendo games
@@sjf1981 not if you played it a lot, in 1989 this was the only game I had for awhile and I got really really good at it
Kids these days don't realize how hard some of these games were, too!
you’re acting like there aren’t people saying “How can you beat this without Internet?” Trust us kids these days KNOW these games were hard
Ganon’s game over laugh scared the shit out of me as a kid.
@Noone Cares NO ONE CARES
And that silhouette over the red background? *hides*
THAT part lol
Same. You're not alone. 😂
It's a total departure from The Legend of Zelda, but then again, the fact that it's not a conventional sequel is one of my favorite things about Zelda 2. And its soundtrack, too, of course.
This game is *FRUSTRATING* , but fun. Though, you're better of playing _A Link to the Past_ .
The first time I entered Parapa palace I asked my best friend if it sounded like "Looks That Kill" from Motley Crue to him and he said HE thought HE was imagining it. 😂
But why is shigeru miyamoto ashsmed of this game?
@@Invidente7 I'm clueless as to why he feels that way. I think he should be very proud of it. Though some of the clues are cryptic they aren't impossible to work out and once you make it to the Great Palace it feels like a huge payoff after traveling the path to get there! I love the music, play control, everything about it. 😊
Direct sequels being alot different always been a thing with Zelda look at Majora's mask
Yes! My favorite game I got at 12 years old. My neighbor friend gave it to me because he couldn't get anywhere with it. After 2 years I beat it! I never asked friends for help or consulted Nintendo Power! Now I can finish it in one game, no continues. ☺ Thanks for memories bro!!!
I beat this game using Nintendo Power Magazine as my guide (don't judge me!) And I admit it, it wasn't easy to beat. Specially Dark Link! Anyone here want to try to beat him, without using the 'crouch on the corner, and stab' cheat?
Damn Nintendo Power was the original Google of games back in the day lol
It was so hard to resist not picking it up
I had to consult with Nintendo Power for "Final Fantasy" but refused to for "Zelda II." It took years and lots of overnight sleepovers to reach the end.
I still haven't beat it since 1988 lol
Very nice bro good job especially at 12 lol.
This longplay is a great resource for anyone stuck in the game. The clear explanations and step-by-step approach are super helpful.
So many good memories. Took me hole my childhood to Finnish this game. Masterpiece. Nice played I loved the musical rhythm you did at 2:23:55
I gone check, cool , great musical rhythm in 2:23:55
I used to fake being sick for school in the 80’s to keep progressing in this game. It’s was magical to have a side scrolling Zelda game. The gold cartridge 👍
didnt you have tons of school work to catch up on after you faked being sick would be the drawback to fake being sick how did you pull it off.
@@supersaiyaman11589 used to do that too. fortunately i was a god in school so i passed all my exams
I thought of faking sick once, but ever since I was forced to attend summer school right when I got a terrible Laryngitis, I never wanted to fake sick or be actually sick again.
@@supersaiyaman11589 missing a few days in elementary school was no big deal. Many kids in my school would fake sick. I always got good grades. I was a natural test taker…thank goodness cause I wasn’t big into homework 😆. In college I would just show up for the tests in some courses & still pass with a high grade. I was a design major so the general elective courses didn’t interest me at all. College is different though cause attendance doesn’t matter…if you attend the tests those are the grades that matter.
Cool. Did you end up as a game maker yourself in later life?@@stud_sidious
So I’m 37, and am just discovering all the Zelda games now. This game is wonderful, and all I keep thinking is the difficulty level is perfect-for me now. If I tackled this 30 years ago, I wouldn’t have gotten out of the castle, and given up lmao
It’s not that it’s difficult it’s that it pretty much leaves you to wonder what to do or where to go with no guidance. You have to figure everything out trial and error and then slowly the game starts to make sense. This is one of those games that isn’t hard because of the levels or enemies but because it takes great skill to know where to go and what to get in order to move on.
@@supernova4760I disagree. Maybe I just suck, but I find the levels and enemies pretty difficult. And I’ve beaten the first Zelda like 5 times already. Also first game was alot harder to figure out what to do, but the enemies and levels were easier.
The music is so iconic. Such an underappreciated game.
Have you noticed the title music is the house intro music for OOT and BOTW?
I think it's because this version of LOZ went down a completely different path from the first one and for the rest of the games since. This one had more RPG elements to it.
Under appreciated game because it’s hard as fuck
@@lucasmorales9702 It's not too difficult once you have beaten it several times as myself, and others have.
It’s appreciated enough
I remember beating this game when I was 9 or 10. Took many, many attempts in the Great Palace, I had half a health bar left when I got the last hit needed on the Shadow Link. Never felt a sweeter victory, nor heart-pounding fear, than that day. Thanks for posting this, it really takes me back!
Yeah it's a good sword-dueling fight for sure.
Man, I must have beaten this game a ton of times as a kid, when this kind of stuff was standard video game stuff. Thanks for bringing this back. Loved it!
You must be good! This game was very difficult! That's really neat to hear!
@@nathanmciver6496 I think Nintendo Power magazine from that time helped.
@@RodConvoy1987 were you even alive when the game was released? (Assuming you were born in 87)
@@Reginald-Montgomery-Astird-III Yes, was born much earlier than that. And I just checked. I thought this game was reviewed in a Nintendo Power issue, but it wasn't, as this game came out in 1987, while Nintendo Power didn't come out until 1988. My bad, it was a really long time ago, so I didn't remember it right, and I apologize. Maybe it was a friend at the time who showed me how to beat the game, but I know I've beaten it more than once.
dude I was probably 7 or 8 when I played that game, and it was so hard ! I don't think I even did a third of it.
I find it amusing that the magic and upgrades basically turn you into Mario. Turns red, jumps higher, shoots fireballs, does a ton of damage by jumping on things...
I played this when i was 12. Back then i thought it was hardest weirdest coolest game lol
Christmas morning 1989, and I just opened up my Nintendo. When I put this cartridge in, I was blown away by this dazzling title screen. What followed was a grand adventure, the likes of which I’d never seen.
My childhood!!!!
I have just dreamed about this game a few days ago. Such a nice game
This and MegaMan 1 have to be the hardest NES games from back in the day
Never played battletoads, but that one seems to be brought up more often than any other difficult nes game.
This was MY favorite Zelda game as a kid. I enjoyed this one way more than the first one.
I really love this game 💗!!! Despite the difficulty , it's one of my favorite Nes games
This was my all time favorite game. The game play was so ahead of its time!
2:23:51 🤣
I just started watching old walk throughs its definitely keeping me sane

@@email6743Except the God from the Bible doesn't exist & is man-made.
I just played through this game for the first time a few weeks ago, and it very quickly became one of my favorite games both on the NES and in the Zelda series. I restarted so many times figuring out how XP works until I figured out you get a free level from each palace, and minmaxed attack power. The difficulty was just right in my opinion. It's the black sheep, but it did what it set out to do extremely well.
I got this as a kid back in 1988 and had no idea what I had on my hands. It was hard as hell and became the bane of my existence lol to this day my NES and this gold cartridge are somewhere in my closet dying to get played and hopefully beaten one of these days lol
I have this game on the Switch, as I downloaded the original NES. I played this last week, beat the game last night.
@@ericbattle4597 bro I can’t even get past the knight guy on the first level when he sticks his sword in you alternating randomly between up and Down. Literally keep going through all 3 of my lives multiple time to that one guy. Getting sick of the game over screen now.
@@ericbattle4597after watching what he did in the video though, it looks like all I need to do is keep jumping and hitting him with the sword
my favorite ZELDA of all times, especially from the NES era
and yes i even feel deeper love for Castlevania 2 Simon's Quest since both games truly reminds me each other
i still own the NES cartridge for both :)
This also influenced The Battle of Olympus.
@@ClassicTVMan1981X I played, and beat Battle of Olympus years ago. The final boss (Hades, I believe?) was fighting you upside down!
@@Leonardo-ux6px Yes, Hades. And yes, you fight him as a shadow for the first few times until he reveals himself.
Zelda 2 and Simon's Quest were my first experience with rpg elements and a non level based game it was this open world which back then was breathtaking it seemed so huge they both gave you such a sense of accomplishment especially for a 9 year old truly 2 unforgettable classic sequels that earned the masterpiece label.
Feel you my friend
to me, the underrated CV2 Simon Belmont's Quest still ahead of it's times and truly was a very ambitious game despite whatever flaws it may have
i even did a full Guide for a No Hit - No death in-depth walkthrough series
but i also love ZELDA of course despite me been more of a Castlevania hardcore lover
to me both ZELDA & CVIISQ are like twin brothers in a lot of ways
I was 24 when this came out. Me and my friend used to play this all the time. Before it, we played legend of Zelda. The 2 were perhaps the very 1st video games I ever got addicted to. I was never that much into them before that.
That final dungeon music is just so incredible
For me, the Dark Link theme is cool to listen to as well.
This is the only Zelda game where all the dungeons you complete disappear and turn into a boulder. Meaning you can never enter the dungeons you completed for the rest of the game.
Such a classic game! We were taken by surprise by the mix of overland view and side scroller, but it just added to the experience. Great upload!
This game is the original Dark Souls: it's confusing, easy to get lost, kind of scary and hard as crap, but I can't put it down
In other words, its a shit game with terrible game design.

Great memories watching this! I was only five when I first started playing and this game kicked my ass!! I didn't even know there was a magic shield. Really wish I'd not given it away now
2023. 01.7. es uno de los juegos más fantásticos de la historia. Cuando era pequeña lo jugaba, jamás terminé pero ahora que he visto toda la historia está súper genial. Excelente ennlow 80tas y hoy día increíble la memoria.

Same here with the gold cartridge! I'll never understand the intense dislike some people have for it myself. Great memories! 😎
My favorite games too!
Unfortunately I dont see it. I personally think this is one of the worst :/ but the music and combat is pretty cool!
@@trotic708 How are your favourite zelda games?
Makes me cry this game loved it.
So much nostalgia. This is one of the first games I remember that required you to use different tactics depending on which type of enemy you were facing. Like you could jump and duck stab in mid air to hit the knights over their shields etc.
I also remember one of the harder bosses later in the game could be beaten exclusively with the down stab. You just had to time the jump right and could then basically bounce jump stabs on his head.
Even I was born in late 1992 as I'm not ashamed of myself or what I'm from!
I always think this game and other old games are much cooler then!
Before 2020 we seemed to be much happier!
Great work man. I've still to play this game, one of a few carts left on my wanted list as well.
I love the descriptions you write for your videos. You put so much effort into everything, it's great.
Thanks for posting this! It's like watching a fantasy adventure movie!
I still remember this game and it's soundtrack like it was yesterday...
All I want to say is THANK YOU. This was my very first video game and I spent so many hours.... Took me 30 years to get back to it and see the full adventure,, but I enjoyed every minute of this video. Impressive.
The game over screen used to give me nightmares, from childhood to adulthood. Now that I've seen oh-so-many playthroughs, walkthroughs, let's plays, etc, that horrific game over screen no longer induces nightmares in me! Also, my brother got me a set of 4 Zelda-themed gold pins. Well, 3 gold pins and 1 silver pin, actually.
I have beat this several times over the years, and it's still one of my all time favorite games in general, and one of my favorite Zelda games too. Had it on NES back as a kid in the early 90's
I've played it on Gameboy Advance when i was 13 years old and have an Gameboy Advance SP on Christmas 2004.

Ruto is both a town and a princess.
The names of the towns were used to name other characters in Zelda games later on.
This is no joke my favorite game in the entire Zelda series. Maybe the most nostalgic game of my childhood. And I didn't beat it until it was released on the Switch VC with save states.
That nostalgic music when the game starts, takes me back to my childhood in the 80's
that opening theme is hilarious and i love it lol
One of the first RPG games. Its a great game and i totally LOVE the OST
Born 89 A Link to the Past on Super Nintendo was my first true Zelda Experience, first true video game experience period along with Super Mario World, and Super Mario Bros. 3... my older cousins had this, and the original... My brothers and I just couldn't get into it cause A Link to the Past is so much better lol, and we beat it 100% multiple times before trying this, so it was too outdated gameplay/graphics wise to us... but I could totally understand the nostalgia for most who grew up older than myself. I wish I could've lived through true birth of it all.
Man this takes me back to a different place in time.
great challenging game.beautiful ending.👍🙂❤️
It'd be interesting seeing Nintendo try making a Zelda game like this again. This was so unique compared to all the other entries in the series.

@@BryanX64 you are right, my chances to have nintendo 8bit was in 94😹
Good stuff . Nostalgia overload.
Nothing can touch the classic Zelda games, even with 8-bit graphics you could totally imagine being Link going through dungeons to save the Princess and to defeat Ganon....like someone said earlier, this truly shows how graphics arent everything to make a game great...its the gameplay itself and the way everything is setup! Only other game I got similar feelings to my 1st time playing The Legend Of Zelda, is when I got to play Ys: Books I&II off the TurboGraFX for my first time and luckily this wasnt even that long ago but it definitely brought back that nostalgic feel of exploration like Zelda games did for me!
Gracias por tu vídeo pude terminar el Zelda. Excelente trabajo bro!

I think when you have knowledge of where everything is, the game is awesome. Gladly, I watched my brothers explore-and-error their way through so I didn’t have to myself
This was my first Nintendo game, I was able to beat it only twice. You are skilled.
This is the game that spawned a love of RPG/Action games in me that lives on until this day.

There is no reason why the skulls at 9:03 should take THAT many hits. At least you get OK experience from them.
The developers are sadistic af
I never even knew you could attack them
That was 150 hits with the sword
Im doing a Zelda marathon and im playing this game now. I started this marathon over a year now.
I'm turning 50 this year. The intro is like "Love Making" music to me ❤❤❤. I remember going to Woolworth's and spending my allowance to buy a Nintendo mag. There was a number to dudes in WA, who could help me out of jams, pre-internet. I LOVE ZELDA. BTW, I'd play for hours/days killing blue Octorocks, until I leveled up to the MAX. THEN, I'd go slay with one hit, until the latter levels.
I'm an old bastard these days and this is still one of my favourites of all time :) New tech never replaces a truly great game
At 58:03 It's interesting to see that so many discovered the same way to attack these knights with "unblockable" attacks
Classic game, this one. Definitely a strange turn for the gameplay style (kind of a hybrid of a platformer and a Dragon Quest style RPG) but it works. And it's fun!
This one made me melancholic
Watching this late at night, knowing my workday is going to be as "adventuresome" as playing Zelda II for the first time.
More like getting your tooth pulled with no anesthesia, slowly, if you're going to work after being up that damn late. 🙄
I have it for the NES, but I couldn’t ever finish it… really was hard! Finally, 23 year later I completed in the switch. AMAZING GAME!
Kudos to all the people who finished this game. I failed miserably. I really wanted to love it but found it very frustrating (probably because I was so terrible at it). Glad to see people enjoying it!
EXPERIENCE POINTS STRATEGY: Do not set the crystals in the Palaces right away when you defeat a Boss. Instead, jump over the statue to exit the Palace. What this means is that each time you return to a Palace, the enemies there reset, allowing you to gain more EXP for higher levels. This is especially useful when gaining up to level 4 or 5 of Life, Magic and Attack.
That Link Guy Saves That Lovely Princess Zelda.
Leveling up on those skull bubbles I see. I went overboard as a kid, I spent a few hours getting to level 8 on health and attack in the first palace.. Yeah, confirmed I had no life when I was logging in 4 hours on two screens of the first palace back then.
Boy this game brings back memories. Remember exploiting the falling birds in the shamp area. Could set my NES advantage to turbo and let it auto attack for a few hours. Come back next and my character was all leveled up.
Hahaha that's awesome, I never thought to do that!

I like when classic franchise tries something different and out of their comfort zone.
I know that sometimes "if it is not broken, don't fix it" can be true but most people always react rude when a franchise tried to make something new for a change.
Zelda ll possible was critized and its time for the change but I couldn't care less, I like it and I am glad it is loved now.
A shame that other classic franchise are trying new stuff right now and they are getting such idiotic comments lol

I always wondered what a Zelda RPG would be like. I never thought of anything like this. It's definitely unique. A side scrolling dungeon crawler. Not a bad idea.
Well Maybe it could be so due to how much Fighters you can have on a Team in Tears Of the Kingdom.
