X-Men: Mutant Apocalypse (SNES) Playthrough - NintendoComplete

  • A playthrough of Capcom's 1994 license-based platformer/beat 'em up for the Super Nintendo, X-Men: Mutant Apocalypse.
X-men: Mutant Apocalypse is among my favorite X-men games ever, right alongside Children of the Atom, which coincidentally enough was also released by Capcom in 1994 but in arcades.
This SNES gem really exemplifies how on-top of their game Capcom was when it came to developing for the SNES. The graphics look awesome, with huge, well animated sprites and detailed backgrounds that all look right in line with their source material. The soundtrack rocks, and is easily the among the best Mega Man X soundtracks on the SNES after the first.... okay, so it's not a MMX soundtrack, but it sounds like it could have/should have been with its rock beats and heavily abused guitar samples.
The gameplay is truly what makes the game shine, though. The combat hybridizes standard 2D platforming with fighting controls from Street Fighter II, and it works beautifully. The moves are all well balanced, easy to pull off, and make things more interesting than merely smashing the Y-button until your thumb falls off. I also love that MMX's stage select has been adapted here - the choice of stage order is pretty nice since it allows you to play many times over without getting completely fed up playing the first few levels again and again. That having been said, it's not likely that you'd have to - its actually pretty easy for a non-Disney Capcom action game. It's not a total cakewalk, but it was made pretty accessible to all players, not just experts.
If you haven't taken on this X-Men title, do yourself a favor and try it out. In my mind, it's by far the best 16-bit X-Men title, even besting the (quite good) Genesis titles by a fair margin.
And to anyone that wants to draw the comparison: no, it's nothing like MK Mythologies. The mere suggestion is an insult to this game.

Back when I was kid, seeing Sentinel burst through the elevator like that for the first time was one of the most amazing things ever in this game, that and seeing Brood Queen. Apocalypse's stage theme was and still is phenomenal. I used love playing this and War of Gems, my friends and would take turns playing and would sometimes designate who would play who. Great games and good times.

    • @Artimidorus
      @Artimidorus Před rokem

I'm confused on how they are able to do that. Every single time I tried, Beast just becomes completely non-responsive when bouncing and gets hit.
Psychocke was also a pain. She had a different attack every time to the exact same attack combos (the same one I've been using since SF2 as a kid when it first came out), which basically ended up with her just completely bouncing around.
I was actually coming here to have them confirm this was a TAS run. I say this also because they seemed to have a LOT more s than I do, as I've used some attacks and actually been knocked out of my mutant attack (specifically that Sentinel with Psylocke) that this player just literally phases through and walks through without being hurt.

I've only seen the first three, but Wolverine hogged too much of the spotlight and you could barely tell that Cyclops was supposed be the strong-minded field leader of the X-Men. His stature felt significantly reduced for those of us who were used to his 90's cartoon adaptation (he might've been a bit vanilla, but he held his own).

Ha, Capcom doing the old trick of dropping enemies on you in the elevator shaft ride (a staple of their beat em ups) although this might be more platform than beat em up. I love Gambit's level themes. His first one actual sounds eerily familiar from a wrestling theme in the early '90s from the wrestler Greg the Hammer Valentine. I remember my little brother getting this game for Christmas 1994 I want to say, and us just having a ball playing it. We beat it a few days after Christmas but we kept playing it over the next few years.

This is an awesome X-ample of a good license-based game! I remember playing it in my youth, and replaying it in contemporary times makes me want to say it's a great effort by Capcom! (Years after watching a subpar Screwattack Video Game Vault review, go figure)
And the only X-Men game by Capcom where you can actually *play* as Beast...
You probably made this in light of Marvel vs. Capcom Infinity's trailers, huh?
Out of curiosity, how does this hold up compared to X-Men 2: Clone Wars? And I'll definitely go on record to say that X-Men: Mutant Apocalypse > X-Men on the Genesis in the sense that I don't have to put up with a level that requires you to softly reset the game in order to progress.

vgaoct91 In all honesty I totally forgot about that coming out soon lol. I just really like the game :) I like it better than either of the Sega games for sure. I didn't mind the reset in that one. My problem with it was that I just always found the game ugly and a bit clunky. Fun, but it doesn't touch this

Several of those sprites were also used in the fighting games x-men children of the atom and marvel super heroes. It was cheaper to just copy them and it worked out afterall.

Psylocke can slide her way through the first lava segment, and her jumps can help her out a lot on the second lava segment.
Beating the Apocalypse level with Cyclops, however, is an entirely different thing; you must rely on his crouching Optic Blast during the first lava segment, and his slide attack is too slow compared to Psylocke's. I don't know about him going through the second lava segment, though.
