As a native Montrealer here who lived till 1993 there the Nordiques/Habs rivalry was the most intense. We hated the Nordiques!!!
It was as intense a rivalry as the Maple Leafs Habs rivalry that my dad told me aboot.
Hated the Bruins and Flyers also but the Nordiques, 🎉

People outside Quebec have no idea how much these two teams HATED each other, a reflection of the animosity between the two cities. It was on a whole other level than any other NHL rivalry. In rural Quebec, Montreal was considered a city of rich urban elitists, while in Montreal, Quebec City was considered a town of uneducated pompous rural yokels. And seeing most players in this series grew up in Quebec, it explains why both teams were so desperate to win.

Canadiens fans don't like the Maple Leafs, hate the Flyers and REALLY hate the Bruins -- but we have NEVER hated a team like we did the Nordiques. Besides fighting over the affections of the same province, the rivalry extended to so many other levels: big city vs. small city, Molson vs. O'Keefe, federalist vs. separatist, even English vs. French to a degree -- not to mention Dale Hunter making a career out of being an underhanded, back-stabbing stick artist who never, ever dropped the gloves.
Players and coaches were as caught up in all this as much as anyone, and the Good Friday massacre marked the rivalry at its most intense. Lemaire and Bergeron loathed each other, which was apparent in their post-game comments. Looking not the least bit celebratory, Lemaire strongly implied that Nords players deliberately targetted Montreal defencemen in the brawls, hoping to get them out of the game, one way or another (only 5 were dressed). Meanwhile, Bergeron made no bones about accusing the Habs of using grinders and backup goalie for the purpose of taking out his stars.
Hamel, incidentally, never played another game that mattered. But it wasn't Sleigher's sucker-punch that ended his career -- he took a puck in the eye in an exhibition game the following season.

I really miss this rivalry! It was truly the greatest rivalry in Hockey! Even more so than Habs/ Bos or Tor. When the Hab played the Nords it was always a great game! It's too bad Giuseppe Bettmano can't see past the border when handing out new franchises! Winnipeg got lucky to get back in when they did! I don't believe Bettmano will ever put another franchise in Canada! there are too many hotbeds of hockey like Santa Fe N.Mexico, or Tuscaloosa, Alabama that Bettmano would rather see have NHL hockey rather than somewhere like Quebec City! I doubt if Bettmano even knows where Canada is! All Bettmano knows is that the Canadian dollar is worth .30 cents less than the American dollar and that is all he cares about! Bettmano is selling hockey to the highest bidder, namely Corporate America! What Hockey Canada should do is tell the NHL that Canada is leaving the NHL, create a ten team Canadian Hockey League,it can be done, re-claim OUR Stanley Cup, have players that go through Canadian Jr ranks play a minimum of ten years in Canada before they can play in "Hooterville", the USA! Where would the NHL be without the 60% or so Canadian players? Canada has to get rid of the taint and the reek of Giuseppe Bettmano!

We hung out at our local dep and the clerk who we knew let us watch the game and drink beer. We were all 17 but the drinking age in Quebec was just a suggestion, lol.
The early 80's were a tough time for the Canadiens, the 83-84 team was horrible but they got hot late and the club played above their talent.

First off going to the Forum was always an incredible experience and for many chic Montreallers a glam date night....regarding the rivalry this was the province of Quebec bragging rights. The intensity of the games played and especially the playoff games was beyond any of the other rivalries the Canadiens had....the two teams really disliked each other...although they respected each other...after the brawls in this game the Canadiens caught fire with 5 unanswered goals and the noise blew the roof off the building...would be nice if they brought NHL Hockey back to Quebec City!

Canadiens were lucky they didn't lose more d-men in the tumult, only dressing 5, and losing Hamel in the fight. Robinson seemed like he played 40 minutes this game. Losing Peter Stastny and Dale Hunter in the brawl changed the tide for the Nordiques. This was a great game and the pinnacle of animosity between the two teams, who went at it again in 1985, and 1987, before meeting for the final time in 1993. Jacques Lemaire didn't play his former linemates, Lafleur and Shutt, much before the brawl I noticed.

Under today's rules, the game would have been called due to a lack of players.
As two full periods had been played, the game could have been declared a 1-0 Quebec victory, or maybe a no contest.

Two points to make..... this was NOT Bruce Hood's fault. He sent word to the dressing rooms informing them of who was ejected but the messenger screwed up and didn't deliver the notes to the Habs or Nords ! Also, Jimmy Mann, Quebec, and Perry Turnbull and Norm Baron, Montreal, were all scratched for this contest..... O_O Just imagine.

Bouchard's reaction after the Green goal was ... weird. Was he trying to complain that his own defenseman had screened him from a clear sight of the puck, or was he trying to say, "Look, coach, I've got nothing out here and I tried to tell you that three times before the game. This is what you get."

The NHL wants to keep a team in a big market like Phoenix.
And Quebec City isn't a big market, even for Canada. Go more than 30 kilometers (20 miles) outside Quebec City, and it's very rural and sparsely populated.
The best Quebec City could hope for is to get the Montreal Canadiens to play three or four home games a year in Quebec City.
