Lots of these archives were just recorded on low quality VHS, and then rendered with bad quality converters on a computer, then uploaded in a terrible quality in early youtube which was in 360p. The real archives from the TV stations are looking pretty good if the team had enough budget to get it filmed with quality cameras and skilled technicians.

Not anymore, that's part of the reason we see more concussions now a days, no enforcers to actually police the players. Even Wayne Gretzky said this exact same thing, he didn't get hit much because he was very well protected. When he went to LA he wanted Marty McSorley as well with his trade. The enforcers need to come back. Crosby has nobody to protect him from getting hit in the head, and he still gets up and plays and plays well.

You've got one player who is scoring goals and the other is trying to take them out heading into the boards after the puck is already in the back of the net. That just comes off as jealous or bitter or a cheapshot artist. If someone is trying to be an agitator and get him off his game, being 6'4", do you think the team is going to send a goon after them, he had to fight his own battles. He wasn't someone who was just going to skate around headbutting random people either, everybody wanted to poke the bear. Also in that "era" between the 2, one of them hovered around 4th all time in points per game and the other not so much, i'll give you 2 guesses who and the first one doesn't count.

I am an Islander fan and living in NY I got to see a lot of Lindros playing all 3 local teams (Isles, Rangers and Devils). He could have been so much more if not for concussions. To me Scott Stevens is the best physical defensemen that I have ever seen. Sorry - he was not dirty to me at all. If your head was down crossing the blue line in a playoff game against the devils you needed to make sure where Scott was when you went over the blue line. Though not in this video (thanks for posting) Stevens did try to take advantage of Lindros with a few extra shoves. I really don't think the video includes it, but I recall a fight where Lindros finally stood up for himself and really put a beating on Stevens.

The dirty stuff was thrown from both sides, and so I have no objections. "If you dish it, be ready to take it" type of deal.
Mostly I'm just sad that Lindros' career was cut so short. He was an all-around great player and leader, and I find myself hardpressed to find an equivalent since his time. The only person I can think of who comes close is Ryan Getzlaf.

Ulf Samuelsson sticks his knee into Cam Neely’s thigh and everyone calls it a cheap shot. Scott Stevens sticks his shoulder into Eric Lindros’ head and people celebrate and say that’s hockey Eric shouldn’t have had his head down. It’s high level hypocrisy at its worst. Stevens was dirtier than Samuelsson.

I agree if this hit happened today it’s easily 5 games for a first time offender. Scott Stevens playing today would have a far worse reputation than a Tom Wilson currently does. Different era for sure but Stevens was praised and made a career out of dirty hits deemed in today’s nhl!!!

I have little to no sympathy for how Lindros had to retire or how his career was ended rather short.... He was a victim of his own creation in a way. Tried to be a bully so players targeted him right back. He did lots of dirty shit himself in his career. I loved this time and era in hockey. It’s kinda all speed and talent in today’s game.
