Chevy Suburban 5.3: Entire Bank Misfire

- čas přidán 22. 11. 2021
- In this video I have a look at a 2007 Chevrolet Suburban that came in with a customer complaint of an entire bank of misfire. A quick scan of the vehicle revealed that it was having issues with all the coil control circuits on bank one. Powers, grounds, ECM? Let's have a look. -Enjoy!

One of the first things I learned from my Uncle Gus was check the grounds. He was a truck driver but also a pretty good mechanic. He drove for a trucking company that had a truck that had been in the shop for a month with numerous electrical issues. He kept telling them that there was a ground problem and they kept telling him he didn't know what he was talking about. Finally they told him if he thought he was so smart, fix the truck. He took the main ground wire off the frame cleaned it and put it back on, truck was fixed!
Nothing quite like watching an Eric O video with morning coffee on a cold morning. Thanks Eric!
Yup! Iike a good movie you wonder whats gonna happen next.🤣😃
@Darink300zx Where abouts are you? I'm up in Northern Ontario Canada and we just got out first cold snap of the year.
Wish you lived closer to me and my 5.3, great vids
@@dropinbiking92 Kentucky, it was 19 degrees f when I was watching this. Brrr

There are no boring videos on this channel !
yeppp he is great guy n master mechanic
Had a Wire Gremlin , Ghostly , Phantom issue in a friends 1994 Chevy 6.5L turbo diesel. Started looking at around dusk and was quit dark when i opened the hood. There was an strange orange glow coming from behind the head at the fire wall. Mind you i had turned all a/c full and headlights and everything power hungry on before i opened the hood. A single copper ground strap attached to the motor and firewall was glowing red enough to cook on. All 4 of the other grounds were totally corroded away. And with a mechanical fuel pump it didnt need spark. BTW the fuel bowl was just in front of it! Could have been a fire!!!
You really gotta keep them "Ground Relocation Kits" in stock here in NY.
All brands and nationalities of motor vehicles are susceptible to salt, I've never seen any vehicle hold up to the salt for very long without needing attention. We are the worlds corrosion test lab. As the song says, "If you can make it here (NY), you can make it anywhere".
This Suburban made it 14 years, which isn't bad at all. Many succumb much sooner.
Thanks Eric, I enjoy watching even "routine" repairs, you always make it entertaining.
Quite impressive the entire bank has a blackout 😂 and this guy diagnosed the problem in less than 10 min ... Truly a PRO ! 👌💯
That was simple fix. Like he said all 4 wires or or coils going bad at same time highly unlikely. Nit impossible but just very improbable. Plus gm doesn't manufacture vehicles designed for the rust belt and Roberts your fathers Brother it's a bad ground.
As someone that is a DIY guy, you have helped me diagnose and repair several issues with my vehicles. No video is too short, too boring or too long.
Totally agree!
*Dr O is top notch!*
I'll second that. And third, fourth, and fifth it, too 😁.
It’s not boring I love watching! I wish we could see you watch the repair. You make it look easy! Great stuff …
Agree. You know the guy that just put 4 new coils on his rig and it still runs the same and then he watches this video doesn't find it boring!
I always say, to myself the same thing, I want to watch the repair!
Ditto, keep 'em coming Eric.
@@benmudn - 4 Carquest Premium coils from Advance Auto that'll fail in 3k miles, too. :D
If it was boring we wouldn't be watching. Your a gosh darn comedian as well as a great wrench. Keep up the vids Mr. O
As a pro wrencher myself, I can watch other people work all day - thanks for the videos, Eric!
"I love work; I can watch people do it for hours!"
When I was working I would break out in a sweat watching other people work. I called it sympathy sweats.
@@markh.6687, Know what you mean; it's my favorite hobby.
Absolutely love these videos. Too many technicians are more than happy to fire the parts cannon at problems with little to no success, all at the customer’s expense. So great to see methodical diagnosis to these problems. Great work.
99% of all big and hard to diagnose problems cost $1-$5 to fix.
Like watching a surgeon at work, even as far as losing a needle in the patient, ha ha. I am constantly amazed at how quickly you zoom in to the problem.
Eric, you are so fast, it's mind boggling, I had the exact same issue on a GMC pick-up only 3 days ago. My customer was told by a dealer that he needed a new computer! It's a good thing he decided to take it to me. It took me about an hour, but I used the same process.
So the dealer diagnoses a faulty computer when it's really just a bad ground wire. The only thing that surprises me about this? Is how supposedly "qualified" people can be so incompetent/crooked/pick one.
@@JohnnyTalia pretty common, they would swap the part, find it still doesn't fix the problem, find the ground wire, and then continue to tell the customer the ground came off, fried the computer, and charge them half the value of the vehicle.
@@JohnnyTalia Lectricity bee's confusing sometimes. And common sense is in short supply. When all else fails blame the computer.
@@JohnnyTalia
Sounds like the tech and or dealer needed a new computer. Or a reflash of the ethics chip.
It's what happens when the dealer is too cheap to send their techs to school.
Hi, I'm the proud owner of a 2007 GMC Yukon Denali. I lost the whole left cylinder bank last night. I live in the Netherlands and the AAA, which is called ANWB, doesn't know anything about US cars. So there I was in the middle of nowhere with this rough idling car and all kinds of codes in my screen...and than I found this CZcams video that told me exactly how to fix it! Man, I'm so grateful for your help. Can't thank you enough. Car is driving smooth again and it took ten minutes and a piece of wire...so again, thanks!
I am glad to see you fixed it right and didn’t just run a jumper to ground. That is a hack repair that often can cause unintended consequences. Almost always better to find the root problem and fix it correctly. Nice work.
Hey, I want to see the wire repair so I can read the comments from the "experts" on how you did it wrong! lol I just did this exact repair last week.
Watching Erik O while on vacation is still one of my favorite things
Thanks as always, Eric. I hope you, Mrs O, and your family have a blessed Thanksgiving!
You may consider it a boring video.. BUT... in this day and age where trades and common sense seem to get a bad rap, it's wonderful to see a person working hard and passing on troubleshooting/diagnostic knowledge... I'm a computer programmer and I do a ton of troubleshooting.. It's astounding the number of graduates that have passed by my desk that have no clue where to start when it comes to figuring out a problem..
Thank you for the location ive been with this issue for months on my rust crusty GMC with a5.3
Gotta love US auto manufacturers - leather "trimmed" seats, four compartment interior climate control, led mood lighting, satellite radio and break away ground connectors to ensure repeat business. Clever.
The American dream keep ‘em coming back after 10 years. 😀
They call it a "Quick Disconnect"😋
The break-away feature is for safety during accidents, like break-away sign posts. :)
I got a classic us manufacturing truck come out factory with the rusted cab corners standard
Did anyone notice the rust and corruption under that hood? There's not much any design engineer can do when road salt is trying to return your vehicle to ore again.
You and Ray make my day on y’all’s thorough repairs!
Their respective entertainment values are pretty much neck and neck.
They both do the classic reach around and ugga duggas. Love them both!
@@kimberg759 yes and they both have their unique attributes to their videos which I will never get tired of.
Who is "Ray" again?

Not boring! Such a simple fix made necessary by low bid parts that cost owners $$$ when they fail and disable so many electrical functions.
I am amazed by your knowledge and use of scanners to get the jobs done and save your customers $$$
Nothing boring about it. I enjoy watching you do your stuff. I would appreciate it if you would share what brought you to the clearly well educated place you are today. Happy TDay to you Mrs. O and your family!
I think you did do a video before on the ground wire and I cleaned up the connections on my wife’s suburban and it fixed the problem. We have two suburban’s and electrical problems are the main issues for us on these vehicles. Still good vehicles though, 200k miles one one and 400k on the other. That’s pretty good!
I for one do like to see the actual repair. Food for thought.
3:30;in and I’m happy I got my favourite mr o saying “ come on baby” and he called the Chevy a pig 🐖 no matter what happens next I’m happy, great diagnosis Eric hope you and the family have a nice holiday together, regards from Ireland
Chevy's are pigs.
We’ve had a couple of Chevy box vans loose a whole bank. Turns out the fuse box was getting the green death and dropping power to the fuse that feeds a bank of injectors. Ended up just replacing the fuse box on them since it was all going green.
Haha I just spent 3 days, between looking at wire diagrams, dreaming up tests, going with Haynes and Chilton manuals test to discover a bad ignition control modular.
I was chasing 2 issues fuel? Ignition? Because no spark test lamp, no fuel presser gage. Sigh....
It was a crank no start issue.
Finaly confirmed ignition tests called out the modular, replaced, hard start but start, so now fuel issue pump related shows no prime.
Its a 96 GMC truck new to me so still learning it. Easyer then the newer stuff but way more electron crap then my 86 Toyota I had for 16 years every inch of.
Shade tree mechanic skills, to poor to not be a DYI guy.
Your videos really heip with a basic dioignostic tree.
I appreciate that more then I can say.
So Thank You, good job teaching, showing us how its done.
You're a brave man, pulling that engine cover right off.. if it was me the heater core quick connectors would have immediately broke especially with rear heat LOL.
I am not pro mechanic , but refreshment tutorials on your chanel are awesome, thank you
From salt water marine engines to salt on streets on long island ny I can tell you any wires which have 12vdc positive and grounds dissolve turn green in insulation and crusty at connection s.
Just a matter of time .
We spray all connections with CRC oil grease all connections ground spots.
Excellent videos.
Thanks Eric
Dissimilar metals are the main cause...tin coated terminals in contact with iron etc. That starts the process, my guess.
@@Garth2011 yes and salt accelerates oxidation.
Not boring at all. Extremely helpful because it is easy when you know how and now we know how.
It is good to know these things . Thanks it gives me a place to start looking in a pinch.
You’re never boring Mr. O. Now my brother in law, that guy will bore you to tears 😂
The interesting thing to me is that looking at the wiring diagram I'd be tempted to say "oh well both banks go to the same ground so there's "NO WAY" that could be the problem" instead of actually checking it.
Love those boring electrical videos. Had my own 'bad ground' lately. Someone removed an A/M remote starter 👍 but forgot to hook up the ground he took off causing the push button start to set a code and trunk popper to not work. Easy fix after a quick look at a wiring diagram.
Remember a similar video maybe a year ago!!! Just love the way you will show us again! Not the same but the same! Sign of a great teacher. Thank you Eric
Not boring to someone who is eager to learn. Thanks a lot.
I love watching a genius at work! Awesome job as usual, Eric 👍
Gotta love corrosion and vibration!
Nice looking vehicle with Planned Obsolescence in it's terminals. LOL!
NOT boring...not at all. Very informative, Eric, especially for those of us with 5.3 Chevies...... (and there are a million of us!)
Glad to see some people still know how to troubleshoot instead of swap parts!
What are the odds LOL. Brought in a pickup 5.3 with bank 2 down last night. Did the exact same test and had the exact same issue. Going to fix G102 this morning.
Quick and logical diagnosis... I know that one thing I will be thankful for on Thanksgiving is the knowledge I have learned from Eric O.!
Never a boring video. Always interesting and informative.
Always enjoy your videos. I hope the SMA family has a safe and enjoyable holiday.
Your video's are never boring. Keep up the great work.

It's never boring, Eric. I learn something every time. You give us a standard to measure our local shops with. 👍👍
Never a boring video Eric. Only good useable information. Thank You Sir.
Never bored watching these 👍
Never boring videos Mr O 👍👍
Never a boring video from South Main Auto!
Never boring Eric..always informative and helpful.
Lucky the fellow came to you. I could see some shops throwing plugs, injectors, coils and anything else at it and still not fixing the problem.
Your video's are never boring.
Never a boring video Eric. Every little tip helps us all. Thanks buddy for the short but informative video.
I had a Suburban in the shop today (November 24), customer was complaining about “shaking, stabilitrack light on , and C.E.L lashing).
Codes: P0352, P0354, P0356, and P0358, hard misfires on 2, 4, 6,and 8 cylinders. The entire bank.
I thought “Why does this sound familiar?”
Entire bank gone.... Suburban......even the paint color was the same!
I gave the ground wires a wiggle and then tried to start the car: both banks were now out. New wires and an eyelet fixed the issue.
Thanks for uploading this vid before Thanksgiving!
Not boring, another perfect SMA video. I tune in for these. Thanks Eric!
Never a boring video with mr. O
Love the videos and the diagnostic process to figure out the problems with modern vehicles. Great video Eric O.
Just went through that with my Burb..it's a Chevy thing.
Great video 👊💪
You'd think they'd take 2 minutes install that in a 5.00 plastic connector.
"Gotta put them grounds where nobody can find/repair them"
Never a boring video! Always have time for your videos.
Keep up the awesome work my Mentor!
Thanks Eric. Hope you get some time off this holiday season!
Another good teaching video. Happy Thanksgiving... enjoy the family
Hardly boring. Educational, instructional and informative. You da man!!
Thanks Eric! You are never boring! Simple but interesting to dyi people
Easy GM fix.. That’s what we like! Another Great job accomplished down at SMA !! Tuning in from west coast Florida.
Love learning from you videos. Happy Thanksgiving to the South Main Auto family. Have a blessed day.
Dont ever worry about a boring video as so far all have been intersting and educational
Never a boring video, always pick some info thanks again Eric O
Good job. If you would have done a quick jumper repair, it looks like they would have eventually lost the left bank too. Always fix a bad ground. If you get a 2002 era Dakota's with a no bus on the odo. Check the ground next to the ecm. 9 wires soldered into one ground eye.
Love it. Quick troubleshooting. Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours.
I really enjoy your videos and your thought process. I’ll be watching on a regular basis. Thanks.
You got to love those types of repairs Eric, diagnostic time and a
quick fix and on to the next one!!!
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Good vid ! All the Road salting up there probably corrodes off alot of stuff at down there levels where Rain & snow , salt gets all thrown around like a washing machine under down there. Definitely a Good idea to Move all Wiring up to the Sky level / Eye 👁 Level. Where u can actually Get to stuff.
Boggles My Mind 🤦♂️ Why factories Put wire connections Down in the nether regions & dont Move as Much as possible up to Sky Level. Keeping it out of the Dirt ! salt , water , grime area where oil drips to too.
Being well grounded applies to many things. Eric may you and your family have a fantastic thanksgiving.
My man Eric ,you gotta love his diagnostic skills!
Never boring my friend . I always learn something when I watch them. I'm always amazed how something so small can effect so much.😳🤔😉
Never a boring video. These are the types of repairs us common folk would get stumped on. (At least the ones that haven't watched your channel enough).
AH, was nice to see Mr. O getting the JOB DONE!!!! Thanks for the video this morning!!!
Great, informative video Eric. Thank you for all you do.
Just love the deduction mr Holmes 👍🏻
You make the most mundane problems interesting, I take my hat off to you
Nice educational video sir 👍🏻👍🏻🙌
nothing gets old, its always good to have a refresher.
Experience proves once again. Great content Eric.
No SMA video is 'boring'. Great video and fix - thank you!

No such thing as boring videos. You’re entertaining no matter what. Gotta be time for a classic brake job or a bearing video with exploding hub tamer. Keep up the great work bud.
Far from a boring video. it helped me IMMENSLEY!
We lucky few get great content from S.M.A. This channel is definitely worth millions of subscribers. Nice work as always.
I'll watch what you call simple videos all day long, because it is the process you use to diagnose easy and complicated problems that interests me. Not to mention the more problems I watch you fix will make it that much easier for me to recognize when I run across a similar issue. Thanks for showing.
Thanks for posting this short video. Very helpful! I have 05 Burb and it helps to know what could happen and how to fix it!
Hope you had a gooder Thanksgiving Mr. and Mrs. O. Thanks for all the time and effort you put into your videos that help out a lot of people. You are the NY Scotty. Cheers from Saskatchewan. Also, thanks for suggesting those guys at ND. Hilarious.
I wish I had your troubleshooting skills. You are very good at what you do. Grounds have gotten me before.
Eric!!! You're my Hero. I couldn't find G102. You saved me tons of time and stress. Love your channel! Thanks for all you do!
I love your channel, I have a 05 GMC 1500 with the big 5.3 and have had the po300 and several bad grounds .all of which I had to diagnose myself so when watching you problem solve on a 5.3 and locate the problem, I'm right with you and feel thanks for making me feel like a pro when I comes to my electrical diagnosis..
Not boring at all Mr O...thank you!
You sir just fixed my problem by just looking at your video....thank you God bless you.
