GMC Envoy: No Throttle

- In this video I have a look at a 2008 GMC Envoy that was dropped off from another shop with a customer complaint of poor running, no acceleration, service engine soon light on, reduced power light and many more. Evidently this happened after car sat for about a month. -Enjoy!

What kind of world are we in a guy can't play the ice cream guy?!
😂
I don't want to play the "ice cream guy", I'd much rather play "Ice Cream Man" by Van Halen. David Lee Roth does a great job singing that song!!!!
+tucci3tears -- Mr. O: "So, you're saying you don't have enough money to pay for your ice cream sandwich, eh?" 🤣
I am a GM master technician with the world-class rating. There is absolutely nothing wrong with what Eric did with that butt connector. Solid repair, great video.
Better than solder in high vibration applications. Solder makes the wire weak where the solder wick ends.
no one is a master at anything, before we know it, they change the game
Great job Eric 👏👌
You make me throw up in my mouth a little!JK
I'm not a hmm matter tech with a world class rating but I agree there's nothing wrong with them little buggers. I use them all the time to good affect
Jay in the back “There’s your problem lady”. At the same time as the viewers 😭😭
I'm an owner operator trucker and I always like to 'study' your videos mostly for electrical diagnostics to help my thought process straighten out. But your videos are the best when at about 22min and I'm staring at the screen like a school kid and you give a funny brain break with Mrs. O that makes me laugh out loud haha you and your videos are such a great tool. Thanks Eric O and keep it up! 🇺🇸
Seems like if it weren't for SMA, then a lot of auto repair shops would go out of business.
Sometimes it's best to farm out the stuff you don't do well to those who can do it more effectively.
Can save the customer money in the long run.
Or at least, they would not obtain the Google 5-star review they obtain with Eric's help!
@@Cheepchipsable Some shops are too busy or do not have enough garage bays to mothball teardowns while waiting for parts. My Durango had to be outsourced to a shop 20 miles away to do a total brake line replacement for the entire chassis because the shop did not have the tools or the space to do it.
I know you patched a little hole were you poked the yellow wire but you didn't show us now I worry
Every young mechanic should be required to watch one SMA video each day for his first three years of his career.
The fact other shops bring things to you to fix says volumes about your abilities! Love these videos!
As a 63 year old Ford master technician, I love your videos. I love how they are not sugarcoated and they are real time scenarios. I appreciate the humor and banter that comes along with every video. I don’t have to tell you that you are good at what you do. You’re reputation speaks for itself! I will say good job as always. Thank you for what you do. I look forward to many more videos to come.👍🏻
The "naysayers " will always be there, your track record speaks for itself. Great job.
More adult humor in eric's videos than a comedy channel. Also i love how other shops bring it to eric to fix that tells you he's the man.
Ignore the haters and the trolls. They’re jealous of your success. Also… “naughty little PCM turning itself on”… that’s what makes this channel gold.
I'm also a mechanic, and with absolute certainty I always see great work here on this channel!
"You like role playing... when I'm the carpenter man."
My sides still hurt from laughing...
I prefer "lawn boy". "Ma'am, would you like your bush trimmed too?"
Yeah! A mechanic playing the role of a carpenter? There has to be more to that story!
@Lord Edward You know there is but you probably don't want to know.
Yeah, I thought this video was about to lose its family-friendly rating at that point.
Im still dying from laughter.
Maybe it’s the years of watching SMA vids and it’s all starting to click, but this seemed like one of Eric’s best explained diagnosis videos.
Wish I had the patience and sense to do it his way - saves hours of playing under the hood with no positive results.
Eric, you are one of the best, thoughtful, insightful, and thorough mechanics I've ever seen. Your ability to track down faults is legendary. Don't listen to these nitwits. Keep up the awesome work you do, and keep making the awesome videos. I only wish I lived closer so I could take my vehicles to you.
No nausea here brother!!! Hey, those that can't do thing's, always have some criticism to spout!!! Keep up the great work....We love you out here!!!
I'm attempting to bring the skills you have shown, with me to a local shop I've just graciously been accepted into. We appreciate all the knowledge and skill you show. You are freaking awesome Eric O!
It’s a GM preferred method of wiring repair
@Joe Huff Common sense is not common
Just keep in mind that you will NEVER come close to being a South Main Auto shop unless you have the lovely Mrs. O sitting at reception! 😂
The diagnostic process you go through is a great teachable moment
I absolutely agree. Even without a high-end scanner, I have applied SMA diagnostic techniques with cars I have repaired in my driveway and my job. I'm extremely grateful for yhe SMA channel
With acorn bits under the aircleaner I expected some rat to jump out at him
Eric O. You are the master mechanic. These other people are not master mechanics. They probably do no work on cars for a living. Amazing any person would make a negative comment on the way you fix cars.
You know you're good when you have a constant flow of work from other shops that can't figure out what's wrong and have to bring it to the Big Kahuna to get it fixed. Watching you track down the problem and fix it correctly instead of replacing parts is a joy to watch. Getting to see Mrs. O isn't a bad thing either 😉. Great job as always.
The funny thing is, with schematics and his scan tool that can see inputs and live data, its not hard to track down eletrical issues. The other shops should be able to do this. They are a legitimate mechanic shop afterall
I say its easy but I also have a computer science degree and had to learn electronics repair so i use those skills when diagnosing vehicles also. So maybe its hard for others even though they should be trained to repair vehicles properly if they are a legit shop.
Eric deserves way more than 5 stars .
...and a sponsorship from Napa Auto Parts too.
The sign out front should read "The Broken Wire Garage".
And below that "green chrusty" abatement!

As an electrical technician in a hospital here in Ireland, I love watching these sorts of diags and repairs. I spend my days looking for faults on electrical equipment (including vehicles at times) so am always interested.
I visit a well known river in NY state not too far north of you guys in the fall, unfortunately couldn't get last year or this year, but hopefully get the pilgrimage back on the road next year. Might even call with SMA on the way up from Newark, will make a change from OCC. Be safe yall.
Yay! for SMA. You'll have to give us a looksie at the changes your made to the shop sometime. 👍
Mrs O picked some nice colors for the outside building. She has some great taste.
I missed the tour of the remodel? I saw a video awhile back, where he was saying it was happening. So it is done?
Except in her relationships! Lol
This is one of the best auto repair channels on the web!
I disagree. It's the best.
I agree that the window looks like an ice cream shoppe ordering window and I had thought that to myself right before you mentioned it, reminds me of old style Rita's counter.
Also I don't understand why armchair mechanic folk want to nitpick your methods on repairs, you have about 25 years experience and I'd certainly trust your shop based off that and all of your videos. If you were a bad mechanic you wouldn't have people coming from miles away to have work done on their cars and a full parking lot of stationary vehicles, or those long term customers you've mentioned a few times.
FYI: I have never thrown up watching this channel! (How many channels get a comment like that?) I like your ice cream window idea! Kids can help too! Too bad Mrs O already is working full time! The only thing missing was the use of brake clean! I think that always puts a smile on everyones face.
If all types of different crimp connectors are good enough for aircraft, they’re good enough for earth bound vehicles. It’s all about proper use.
You beat me to this. My uncle worked on aircraft for many years and those things are put together with crimp connectors and zip ties. More than adequate.
Jeff, my first shop foreman was a retired air force guy, he told all kindo horror stories that makes me not wanna fly! He did say that it's all about the proper use in the proper place, that one stuck right up to today!
I got hung up once at an airport for 1hr sitting on a plane at the gate because of a seat back tray that wouldn’t stay up. People were giving the crew and the mech who showed up all kinds of grief.
My favorite “mechanic vs passenger” story is when an old friend of mine was working in the cabin with a plane full of people. A passenger was giving him grief about him talking too long to fix the problem. He finally had all he could take and told the passenger, “Unless you want to end up in the bay in a pile of whale shit, shut up and let me do my job!” (He was working on electrical cables the size of your thumb behind the flight attendant seat.)
Yeah, if you don't trust a crimp connector, you've only used the cheapo dollar store ones. They come in vast qualities.
I love these wire chaseing videos
I'm an aircraft mechanic and that's what makes the best mechanics is when you can troubleshoot to the component and find a broken wire without loading the parts Cannon
true dat!
These are my favorites. The problems that come from other shops are usually the most interesting. That also why I watch Bernie. When they say it's been to three shops it's going to be a good video.

This wire damage is really common in the uk gm range , as regards your repair duraseal butt connectors are dealer recommended, so concrats on showing the people how to carry out a proper wire repair.
You truly are a master of the trade, this is by far the best auto mechanic channel on YT. I've been trying to learn more on electrical repair and diagnosis and you explain it perfectly, thank you for sharing your expertise and knowledge!
When you honked the horn I was waiting for Josh to shout out "Hey, it's that guy."
LOL!!!
My favorite kinds of videos from you. Logic, deduction, theory, repair method and some humor and interaction thrown in! Perfect!
I am amazed at how you work your way through the process and tell us everything, keep it up.
I watch you a lot and you and one other person are the only ones that do a total inspection of the systems that is a sign of a true mechanic
I've never had any issues using those wire connectors. But to each their own.
Another great video.
I've used them with zero issues as well. I think crimp terminals earned their bad reputation due to all those crappy, pos, sheetmetal stamped electrical pliers. A good crimper makes all the difference in the world.
That’s what they use in aerospace.
They look pretty legit to me
We use these on 3 million dollar mining machines, no issues
I use those crimps on milk tankers that get washed every load and have no issues with them, every other repair type has issues . The cheap ones with no glue are junk though.
So an armchair mechanic is telling the oracle how to join wires properly, good grief
Eric You're a genius! Nothing but respect for your problem solving skills and professionalism!
A fantastic diagnostic and repair,.as always Eric. I enjoy your videos and you sharing your knowledge with the public. Glad to watch and support one of the proper mechanics on CZcams. Keep up fighting the good fight buddy.👍
My thought on the "crimp/seal" connectors: a repair pigtail from Cummins for one of their engines utilizes crimp/seal connectors. If crimp/seal is chosen by Cummins it is fine for use by anyone.
Worked in a VW dealer several years ago and several times you got a repair kit there was this style of crimps. VW didient agree of using those with solder.
A friend of mine worked with Toyota forklifts and they was onley allowed to use unisolated crimps wih heat shrink after so you could see if it was a god crimp.
Ford tech here. All our warranty wire repairs use mechanical crimps with heat shrink and glue. Same stuff. I would assume most Oems are the same. You the man Eric keep doing what you do!!
@@fulf: I can see that. I absolutely HATE crimping through a condom, so i make a perfect splice with non-insulated crimp, then slide the gourmet, 3M marine condem over it and cook with HOT AIR (not a lighter or torch). The repair is like ART, and is less bulky per wire, if you have a bunch to fix).
I've used those connectors for years. They have a proven track record with me. I wonder how the people that complain about the connectors think the ones from factory are attached.
As long as you have the proper crimp tool your good to go.
As an A&P mechanic they are what is frequently specified for aviation wiring repairs, and they are great!
It can be very easy to get off into the weeds when chasing electrical, but you seem to be able to track stuff down fairly consistently (and of course the real head scratchers that take a ton of time probably don't make it to the channel). Anyway, I just wanted to say I appreciate the positive and ethical approach to your job, and I enjoy how you take us along as you diagnose, investigate, and resolve all the stuff that rolls through your shop. No matter what kind of day I've had, a vid from SMA usually helps boost my mood.
Hats off to you and your crew
I imagine the rust will kill that car first before the crimp seal connector fails again.
202K on it, if his fix lasts three weeks, that's all the car has left in it. =-D
@@jack002tuber Oh, ye of little faith. My wife's 07 Trailblazer has 289,000 miles and is still reliably transporting her around. In NY. With plenty of weight reduction. That GMC looked in reasonably decent condition. It'll last a while yet.
@@jack002tuber Learn how to maintain your cars and they will last the rest of your lifetime. Follow oil changes and maintenance schedules, be aware of things that do not feel right. Also sheetmetal and bondo as well as chassis protectant paint will take care of the rust issue. Don't understand why people carry when you join a wire with a sleeve, all lugs, connecter pins are all done with crimps so no difference, love your work from Aust.
I agree but the crimp on the connector pins is different and a lot better.

TIL when Eric O's not working on rusty junk, he moonlights as a carpenter 😂
You left the part you repaired fully functional and pleasing to the eye. I say job well done 👏
I've done a lot of 12v wire repairs and splices, and I think your jobs and the way you do them are fine. Good solid connections that wont break again.
I felt a very cold stare from Mrs O when you mentioned that she liked to role play xD. Great vid got a good laugh out of me
LOL, the carpenter. "I got your wood right here".
Hope you're happy Eric - I laughed so loud at the Mrs. O/role play conversation that I woke my kids up. :) Thanks for the vid!

Great Video Eric! Always learned something, too many times we are thinking its the hot wire or a fuse, "no power" we say, understanding the circuit, and completing it. The PCM grounding it at the end, that was my " ah hah" moment! thanks for taking the time to explain it terms that simple people can comprehend! your an awesome teacher!

One of my moms favorite sayings was “I brought you into this world and I can take you out!” Everything you said brought back hilarious memories.

And nevermind those who disagree with your methods or products you use 'cause I'm sure some of those have a car or two in the backyard, for like 7 years now, and they'll get it running, someday. Eric, crimping wires is the right way, in the mining business we use this type of connectors, because seals and crimps wires and stop the humidity, done it for long time. You doing the right thing. Great troubleshooting skills, there is much to learn from each other.. Haters are just jealous. Great video thanks
Young man I learn a lot from you. I have a 2006 Tahoe that has given me another grey hair. I have been helping the kids with their 6.2 flex fuel escalade. I love those crimp seal connectors. Quick and easy, and it's what most car makers recommend (require) you use.
I was about to comment that it is the recommended VW repair. They explicitly state to never use solder connections.
I have always used the crimp/heatshrink/seal type and have never had any issues.
@@dannywood6842 yup. Never had an issue with them in my 13 years as a vw/audi/Skoda tech.

For the record, most (but not all) aircraft wire connections are crimped... even from the factory.
I saw someone comment about that on a video once concerning aircraft, I believe the reasoning is the vibration can cause the solder to crack. That's why they use the crimp method. If it's good enough for the airline industry, it's good enough for passenger cars for sure.
