- In this episode I will show how to make a floating bed with a live edge headboard. I made this DIY bedframe out of steel 1” square tube and used a live edge white cedar slab of wood for the headboard. This DIY modern bed is our latest project for Tuft & Needle who makes the best mattresses I have ever tried.

What if the glass under have a light
Would it have been better to add some wood (or padded fabric maybe) on the perimeter of the bed? The mattress and metal base is basically 1:1 and if someone accidentally knocks the side of the mattress/metal base with their legs (I’ve done it many times before) it’s gonna hurt.
#gaurangsteelfurniture
#gaurangsteelfurniture
the fact that it would alleviate stubbed toes AND remove obstacles from cleaning around the bed makes this even more desirable.
easy to clean!
Same thoughts. I fucking hate when I can’t clean properly under my bed.
@STEALTH yeah lol jumping on the bed thinking it's safe but hitting your knee on the edge instead 😂😂😂😂

Add some LED's and it will look even more amazing
After watching the video advert i was still skeptical. But when i finally downloaded the plans czcams.com/users/postUgkxZF0EMnrujZvqHhGkxiz559uIABJWR9TG i was very impressed. The whole plan was just as you said in the video. Thank you very much. I now have a large and valuable collection for my woodworks. This is great!
I like this. It makes cleaning under the bed a lot easier.
the wood part was dumb. a nightmare if you ever get bed bugs
@@mikelisteral7863 I don't know where they live but not everywhere has bedbugs. I've never known anyone who has had bedbugs where I live in Nevada, but I'm sure it's possible. Probably just a calculated risk and it looks amazing.

What r u -- a designer, architect, sculptor, artist, carpenter, blacksmith or a musician. Whatever u actually r, this piece of art is simply brilliant. In fact, you should exhibit ur floating bed at MOMA :-). I wish I can do this. Thanks for letting us go thorough the entire process. Again, this is brilliant.
Just curious, how does this bed hold up when you play "games" on it. Asking for a friend.
Agreed, this is important information. It would be unfortunate to go to all this work only for 5 little monkeys jumping on the bed to break it off.
crucial is an acurate term
Yeah, agreed. He is designing this for a hotel..
You should be fine when laying together on it and play Monopoly
we are designing to withstand 900lbs of aggressive "wrestling" but not with acrylic
The expanded mesh also helps with ventilation of the mattress. Plywood can trap moisture. Humidity, sweat,(can cause mold)
Beautiful job. Can’t imagine building 30-100 of these for a motel.
The mesh will probably tear up the bottom of the mattress over time though. No matter how much you tried to clean it up
@@-007-2 I think so too. Put some protector under the mattress
wood slats
i think staying w the acrylic will give u some great led lightg options as the material amplifies even a small amount of led ! with the right controller u could make some brite OR warm ambience 😊. change colors so that it enhances the bed spread, quilt or down comforter or what moves ya.
Thank y'all so much dearest 🌹
Y'all such an inspiration 🥰

nicest prison bed ever seen.
Add LED lights underneath. Simulate lightning flashes underneath the bed. Like on Cloud 9.
I’m actually pumped to try this. Totally well within my skill level.
So I just saw this video and I thought this looks great. If you are looking at using this for a hotel project, leave the acrylic slab/leg under the bed and see if you can run LED lights into the acrylic to help light up the floor to enhance the floating bed look. One thing I would recommend to minimize bumps and bruises from the metal frame is to have the frame wrapped with foam covered in fabric or shrink the dimensions of the frame by a quarter inch smaller than the mattress. Overall, excellent work!!!👍

9:48 WOW! The detail that finish brought out is really stunning!
This was awesome love the details and creativity.
Wow, great ideas. I do worry about the mattress moving and catching a shin on that metal corner but that could be rounded or, better, padded. Thanks for the tips.
Now this is the bed i was imaging sleeping on before the first time I showed up to Maker Ranch. Loving the design aesthetic, Ben! 💪
the wood part was dumb. a nightmare if you ever get bed bugs
ALL of the aesthetics are pleasing. The bed, the headboard, you, the linen sheets, the pillows, the comforter.
Great inspirational project! Minimalistic and beautiful!
I love this!! It's brilliant and well executed!
Adding some LED lights like under the low riders used to have would be “sweet” maybe even some color changing for the “mood”
Yeah.. N add the speaker also underneath it lol it must be more awesome bed

I was just about to comment this
Agree with you it's a good idea 👍
@Ghettodi nixoh 😁
Imagine covering the bed with pillow puff to create a cloud bed, and maybe add led lights for changing color, as if the cloud can have different colors, or make the bed look like a magic carpet 👀 with like a Aladdin carpet bedding

Great job and I appreciate the detailed information, as you went along. Your sister flopping around on the demo was funny and cute, too.
This is so good. The acrylic center support is such a clever touch to tie the floating illusion together.
every welding project you post makes me that much more likely to try it out!
Agree. I am just about ready to buy that same welder.
Welding is amazing, it's super fun being able to put things together and the more you do the better you get. Nothing like nicely welded joint. I learned to weld on my own when I was in uni, needed it for a project. Definitely recommend trying it out at least once!
I can't believe I waited so long to try. with a welder and an angle grinder you can do so much!
Sadly i dont have a welder and every welding projects he post discourage me from trying it :( , buttttt i will try to collect some cash to buy a welder and hopefully learn it so i can also make his project lol
I'm a welder, so I'm always watching the wood working parts with the same type enthusiasm 😂
That is gorgeous and brilliant. Well done! I want one. King size.
From a welder, good job welding every diamond of expanded metal. Had you not done that it would’ve rattled (maybe not with the bed on there but still). Always watch your heat, also, cutting 45’s on the corners of the steel makes it easy to bypass the end caps. Saves some time and is easier to make it look seemless if you want to get all howti-todi with it.
Rad build though, good job with it!
12:58 - The moment I've been waiting for! YAAAAAAASSSSS!!!!!!!!!
Love what you did here .So well explained .Thankyou for making this video so clear and concise with description of decisions as you went along. Blessings on you and yours.
Cama linda demais!
Parabéns meu irmão pelo seu trabalho fantástico!
Gratidão pôr compartilhar!
Wow ! The effect is incredible 👏👏👏👏
I absolutely love the way it looks finished. I think you'd want something covering the mesh so that it doesn't tear up the bottom of a mattress when people are heavily using it. Especially in a hotel setting. And some way of changing the look of the steel frame. Maybe it could be wrapped in thin foam to soften the edges and then a tight fitting sheet could be wrapped around it before the mattress is put on.
I already want to learn welding, and I think this is an amazing project for it.
Wrap it in wood
I love that you can't stub your toe on the legs of the bed; I''m always doing that on mine.
yes!
no but you can take a gash out of your shin with those steel tube corners! :P
@@darken3150 For a hotel (and home for that matter) the corners definitely require rounded corners. Can you imagine hitting your shin on that at 3:14am on your way back from the loo? Something like this: czcams.com/video/EX-2GFlvWvk/video.html
Jonathan M,
That’s a good tip. How about using round tubing for the external frame?
Or keeping the external frame 5mm smaller from the mattress on each side. That way the shins won’t keep hitting when you walk to the bed in the dark.
This video has come just at the right time. I was searching how to make this style bed just a few months back. We’ve got renovation work going on and I’m going to put this bed in my room.
Dont you underestimate Murphys law.
I LOVE this video. You guys make it look so easy.
You can also put the acrylic (or whatever material you use in the future) perpendicular to the wall, instead of parallel. I did that with a table top on a coffee table and it's hidden really well... just looks like the top is floating over the second top. (it had two tops to make a little cubby area to put things in.)
Looks sick!
The folding makes it really look like the bed is floating.
Ben this is amazing!! I want the audience to lobby sawstop to get one over to Ben and the team at the maker ranch!! ASAP!
thanks jimmy! we would love that!

Soo beautiful!! Awesome craftsmanship!!
just discovered these awesome floating daybeds at the fillup club. Best thing for summer
This is amazing and no more broken toes in a dark room at night. I'm guessing it would also work with a King size as well. I really enjoyed this, thank you.
and easy to clean under!
You don't have shins?
I think that on the end of the bed there should be something to stop the mattress from sliding.
The bed looks great!
I love this. And the acrylic is a very nice addition.
Keep the acrylic middle “foot”. Love this bed!!
You need to coat the back of the timber with the oil to stop it warping due to uneven moisture absorption from the environment, this is very important, the slab will start to warp and cannot be un-warped without refinishing it with a planer.
Wow, i Love the idea. Maybe I do something like that with wood (im not a great Welder...)
Love the idea so that my robot vacuum doesn’t get stuck.
Absolutely superb! Design concept for future of bedding! Beautiful!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
What a perfectionist 😍 your attention to detail is enviable x
I think the most important part of cutting any material is to know what type of blade to use.
Seems like you have a great budget to work with so I'll say to cut up to a 3" plexiglas or acrylic block use a 70 tooth 12 inch blade with a negative pitch on a table saw. I'm not sure how many teeth would be for a smaller blade, but I assure you the cut will not work very well in smaller blades for thick materials.
I worked as the head tablesaw operator at Midwest Trophy in Oklahoma for many years. They make trophies for baseball, football, basketball, soccer, and other sports along with many trophies nationwide on an elite level. I was in charge of cutting the most demanding materials and oversee others so I know what I'm talking about with cutting materials.
As far as buffing the cuts using a torch is your best option, It gives an instant almost baby like butt shine, but only if you go at a steady slow speed. It works so well you don't need to buff. Not too slow not too fast. Too slow or fast will create white residue that most of the time will bind or make your blade stick to the material. Experiment until you know how long to hold the torch on the plexi or acrylic pieces. The reason you had a problem getting the plexi clear was because you used a blade that scarred the material more than it cut it creating more work.
Make sure when you cut the materials you go at a steady slow speed and the more you pay attention to the same speed all the way through the material the smoother your cut will be. You did a fine job on the bed frame, only make sure when cutting the metal tubing you cut the right length or larger. You can always grind it smaller but cutting it smaller will end up creating more work time as you so mentioned.
Thanks for sharing!
Nice job! I would add a small wood trim all around on top the sides of iron frame to hide it. It would match the wood panel and make it overall perfect! IMHO. ;)
Maravilhoso 😍 adorei lindo magníficos Parabéns Deus os Abençoe os muito.
Fantastic!!! Gonna make this too now!
I kinda wish the corners are rounded. I can just imagine myself hitting my knees on the corners because the bed has no legs to stub my toes on 😂
Instead of stubbing the toes you'll stub the head 😂
"Floating"
Awesome project dude!
thank you!
This is the only floating bed I've seen that actually looks impressive. The others just look like the water bed my aunt and uncle had when I was a kid.
That duvet fold is absolutely great
Me: Interesting, I might try it 🤔
Slab: Over 1000 for just a slab of wood
Me: 😂 Nevermind
You could put any kind of headboard you like.
Cartoon Expert, I was thinking some abstract concrete work to replace the experience slab?
You can use plywood and slap vinyl on it.
Chainsaw = $299
Tree at the park that just fell with the last storm = free ($50 for the park maintenance guy in case he shows up )
You get 4 slabs💁🏻♂️ and you keep a chainsaw for when you see more CZcams videos and get inspired again lol
@@taimoorshah8230 - Yeah, I get a some veneer sheets and use cheap wood underneath for a similar effect
I think there's a need of a lip around frame from 3 sides to prevent matress movement. Also, ideally, to make corners (at least 2 bottom ones) rounded to make mesh and frame corners invisible.
Amazing. You know this guy is the real deal. Fantastic.craftsman.
Looks great!
The fact that there is so much space for monsters to hide made me tarrified
They won't be able to catch you bruh
@@GabrielRamos-ko2my you’d be floatin’ ☁️
😂Made my day with that comment
End result looks great, and that wood looks beautiful, but my shins are already hurting looking at those corners sticking out. Would have liked to see a 3/4" taller side by welding on some 3/4" tube on top of the 1" tube, around the edge, so a full sheet of plywood cut in sections could have been placed into the frame instead of that wire mesh. Chamfer the corners next time for shin pain reduction and all is excellent.
Es s
This was really fascinating!
This is incredible..
Those sharp steel edges are perfect to crack open your shins.
easy fix, make the frame 1" less all the way around, that way you get 1/2' of the frame under the edge of the mattress
Yea but your toes are fine tho
This is just amazing, but I'm concerned with it's resistance long term. Like how long will this hold with daily usage compared to a 4 feet bed?
This is... beautiful. And practical too. Imagine the joy of cleaning your room when you can just whip the hoover under the bed no problem. Nowhere for the dirt to hide!
I like how simple the build is and not complicated at all. I was also thinking just adding some steel legs would do the job instead of the acrylic board.
Super stoned and here I am learning how to make a bed I’m probably never going to make 😬🤷🏻♀️
hmm and i thought i was the only one! lol
Awesome job on the frame my friend, and if you haven't already stubbed your leg, on those corners, you'll need to add something rubberized to minimise that from happening, and maybe even add some subdued blue lighting around the underside perimeter of the frame to add an extra visual effect & it would look more inviting for your partner as well & might even add a margin of safety against banging your legs on that steel frame especially at night. 😜👍
I just wrote that before I seen your comment 😂
