  • In this episode I will show how to make a floating bed with a live edge headboard. I made this DIY bedframe out of steel 1” square tube and used a live edge white cedar slab of wood for the headboard. This DIY modern bed is our latest project for Tuft & Needle who makes the best mattresses I have ever tried.

Would it have been better to add some wood (or padded fabric maybe) on the perimeter of the bed? The mattress and metal base is basically 1:1 and if someone accidentally knocks the side of the mattress/metal base with their legs (I’ve done it many times before) it’s gonna hurt.

If you are looking at using this for a hotel project, leave the acrylic slab/leg under the bed and see if you can run LED lights into the acrylic to help light up the floor to enhance the floating bed look. One thing I would recommend to minimize bumps and bruises from the metal frame is to have the frame wrapped with foam covered in fabric or shrink the dimensions of the frame by a quarter inch smaller than the mattress. Overall, excellent work!!!👍

From a welder, good job welding every diamond of expanded metal. Had you not done that it would’ve rattled (maybe not with the bed on there but still). Always watch your heat, also, cutting 45’s on the corners of the steel makes it easy to bypass the end caps. Saves some time and is easier to make it look seemless if you want to get all howti-todi with it.
Rad build though, good job with it!

I absolutely love the way it looks finished. I think you'd want something covering the mesh so that it doesn't tear up the bottom of a mattress when people are heavily using it. Especially in a hotel setting. And some way of changing the look of the steel frame. Maybe it could be wrapped in thin foam to soften the edges and then a tight fitting sheet could be wrapped around it before the mattress is put on.
I already want to learn welding, and I think this is an amazing project for it.

    • @haroon420

      Jonathan M,
That’s a good tip. How about using round tubing for the external frame?
Or keeping the external frame 5mm smaller from the mattress on each side. That way the shins won’t keep hitting when you walk to the bed in the dark.

I think the most important part of cutting any material is to know what type of blade to use.
Seems like you have a great budget to work with so I'll say to cut up to a 3" plexiglas or acrylic block use a 70 tooth 12 inch blade with a negative pitch on a table saw. I'm not sure how many teeth would be for a smaller blade, but I assure you the cut will not work very well in smaller blades for thick materials.
I worked as the head tablesaw operator at Midwest Trophy in Oklahoma for many years. They make trophies for baseball, football, basketball, soccer, and other sports along with many trophies nationwide on an elite level. I was in charge of cutting the most demanding materials and oversee others so I know what I'm talking about with cutting materials.
As far as buffing the cuts using a torch is your best option, It gives an instant almost baby like butt shine, but only if you go at a steady slow speed. It works so well you don't need to buff. Not too slow not too fast. Too slow or fast will create white residue that most of the time will bind or make your blade stick to the material. Experiment until you know how long to hold the torch on the plexi or acrylic pieces. The reason you had a problem getting the plexi clear was because you used a blade that scarred the material more than it cut it creating more work.
Make sure when you cut the materials you go at a steady slow speed and the more you pay attention to the same speed all the way through the material the smoother your cut will be. You did a fine job on the bed frame, only make sure when cutting the metal tubing you cut the right length or larger. You can always grind it smaller but cutting it smaller will end up creating more work time as you so mentioned.
    Thanks for sharing!

End result looks great, and that wood looks beautiful, but my shins are already hurting looking at those corners sticking out. Would have liked to see a 3/4" taller side by welding on some 3/4" tube on top of the 1" tube, around the edge, so a full sheet of plywood cut in sections could have been placed into the frame instead of that wire mesh. Chamfer the corners next time for shin pain reduction and all is excellent.

Awesome job on the frame my friend, and if you haven't already stubbed your leg, on those corners, you'll need to add something rubberized to minimise that from happening, and maybe even add some subdued blue lighting around the underside perimeter of the frame to add an extra visual effect & it would look more inviting for your partner as well & might even add a margin of safety against banging your legs on that steel frame especially at night. 😜👍
