Today on Modern Builds I'm going to show you How To Build a Modern Platform Bed completely out of 2x4 construction lumber. This project was a lot of work, but super worth it. So I ran the numbers....
35 2x4's at $7 costs $245
35 2x4's at $3.50 (normal price) costs $122,50
Double the normal price, but for $250 I'd say this bed is worth it!
9.9ft 2x4 is about 10euro (12usd) here in Greece.
in nc they cost anywhere between $8-$9
I’m a project manager in resi construction. Home owner once had my trim carpenter make stair case out of 2x4s like your design. While undoubtedly pretty and very unique, home owner admitted it’s a dust MAAAAGNET and definitely wasn’t worth the trouble. Just an FYI for anyone considering making this.
Here in Norway, 2x4 is 25.85 NOK per meter. (aprox 3.10 USD per meter) . They come in 2.7 or 5.4 meter length. (C24) (and the prices have just gone up with about 40%)

The first half of the czcams.com/users/postUgkx3ICSK6nSknaL_45CU2NmFSoXjarGMDiJ book is everything about wood: types, tools, finishes, setting up shop etc. The second half is all about doing projects for inside and outside of the home. The color pictures are helpful. After reading a dozen of these types of books, this is probably the best overall (layout, color photos, plans). Only detraction is that many of the projects use a table saw/router/planer, which are usually expensive and take up space, so the plans are less friendly to newcomers and the budget conscious. But I know I can use a drill, circular saw or a jigsaw to make the projects.

That’s a really great build. I used the same concept to do the front of my porch. Halfway into it, I began to question my choices. It seemed like I had to use way more lumber than I should have. And I began to regret it, especially when it came to painting it. Now, I know it was all worth it. I get tons of compliments and people say it looks very modern. Thanks for sharing!
I wanted a cheaper approach, so I made mine from gold bricks.

$7 is a lot? In Europe (Czech Republic) - 10ft 2x4-ish size of worst quality construction lumber is around $13 :)

I use wood pallets I find… made a veggie/fruit garden along the wall of my home & couldn’t be happier with it!
I’m looking to make an extra large sectional couch with wide chase lounges on each end that can be slept on & planning on sectional pieces that can convert into cots for guests & another part of it will be a bed for me!!!
My kids are young adults & out of the house now so I’m downsizing to a studio but want to always have places for them to sleep they visit (& grandkids if that becomes a thing) 😊
My 12 year old son and I made a twin version of this bed. Solid as a rock. Love it!
Super sturdy and worth $250, but an amazing deal once 2x4's drop back down to around $4/each. Keep up the great work as the goal is for us to continue to inspire others to build something awesome!

Love it. My only note would be that it's impossible to move out of that room. Some modularity in the base might make it a little more "move" friendly. Perhaps have the base separate into thirds rather than a single piece.
You could use a threaded steel rod with some washers and nuts to press it together instead of screwing every block to the next one - drill a bigger hole for the rod and screw it together at the end... then disassemble at your convenience.

Definitely not near me. You can get by with a planer and DIY planer sled if you don't have a jointer thought.

The slatted headboard going wider than the mattress opens up some interesting possibilities. You could build some movable shelves or drawers that slot into the slats.
Or just platforms
Love the design and I can appreciate the time and effort put into this project. I wish there was a simpler way to achieve this look. I love the headboard but so much work went into the base. 😩❤️

Looks like a piano bed! Switch up the color for pianists- even use contact paper for temporary look to surprise someone. I love it!
96 inch 2x4 $4. also instead of the 2x4 going across the entire bottom you can just make a box and cut 2x4 into say 1ft pieces then attach them to the box. have 2 going full length on each side. 12 boards should be enough to make box and the rest of the platform
I love the looks and idea of this bed! I saw your idea and ran with it (heavily modified) so it can be easily disesmbled and moved. I connect the spacers to the legs and the slats can slide in and out!

This is a really great design! I will be definitely using this method to build beds in the future for my family, but I'll also make some adjustments to the bed for the room that I would be working in, just to give it that design look.

Some of the most simple things can look fantastic. Personally I love this but would seriously recommend building in two halves and bolting the two together down the middle. 35 4x2 timbers at 2 metres will weigh a good bit. 👍

Nice bro. Like your design choices and the ease of building. It doesn't look objectively hard, just time consuming with all those joints. Seriously we need more DIYers like you who don't use 10,000 dollar tools. All that lumber was a bit of a flex though, but we'll let it slide :)

I love how these slats projects look. Unfortunately a downside of these is all the extra surface for dust to settle on.

I was actually able to save a few dollars by having mine made of the world's largest diamonds, it's super shiny and durable!
Chop saw would be in your next to buy list of tools. Never gonna be accurate enough with a hand saw. I made a workbench with this side by side method with 1x3s and a japanese pond deck using the side by side 2 x 4s. Really do come out nice and stronger than a usual deck.

My grandfather (1950---1970, this goes with my childhood), was a DIYer.
He would love all these smaller saws, battery drills, ect, that you use. I see the advantages.

I like this design a lot, kind of a giant slat bench-- I wonder if it would be strong enough done with all 2x2s?
All the comments are about how expensive this would be, but 30 2x4 at around $8 is $240 and any tool rental for the project would bring you to around $300-$350. Most bedframes are at least that price for poor quality or way way more for the nicer ones so still a great budget project!

Around $12 each in certain states on the west coast such as Utah. We still have work to do with supply catching up to the current high demand.

I can't imagine what the final cost was on this project. Our 2x4 boards are up to $8 today. I cut up pallets today just to cut something!

Yeah I've been looking for frames for my cali king and other than the most basic of basic metal frame from China anything that looks half decent is well over $800, most are over $1500.
A little tip for anyone trying this. @4:00 add 1 extra sacrificial board on the tail end of the block. Or the planer will likely destroy your end piece when planing across grain this way

I like the idea and probably am going to do this myself. Was it a design choice to use so many 2X4s? I feel like it could have been done with way less boards. Just a thought.
You could do it with half of the long pieces ( bigger spaces between beams) while retaining more than enough rigidity and strength. After all most beds have just two long walls and they work. This design is simple and aesthetic, but very, very inefficient.

Looks real good.. Really love how simple it looks while also looking creative.. But the only problem is it's really dangerous to have kids around the bed.. They could trip over and hurt themselves.. And it looks really difficult to clean it up..

It's pretty but seems excessive. 5x 2x4 with supports 60" away from each other can support 500lb per foot collectively. It would have proabably made more sense to just build a regular frame box and add the pieces at the end, since you lose the length view by sticking spacers in it anyway. Plus you could make 2 or 3 separate boxes and bolt them together so you can move it between rooms and upstairs with a lot less effort and damage. The sides could even be doubled up if you want that full length piece without seams (if not painted.
I like the idea and look, minus the supports.

@@bldfit46 right.. only I do. look up sagulator from woodbin and you might understand the point I'm trying to make. When you build you should build with mobility in mind. Not constant, just the ability to get into most rooms with little issue.

I agree. Beyond overbuilt. It's gonna be nonsensically heavy. Its a silly, expensive, indulgent, and not even that nice looking design. He build a backyard deck....and then put a mattress on it.
@@emmaloref1438 he's giving honest feedback, while it looks pretty it is definitely over engineered and excessively expensive and heavy, not to mention hard to move in and out of a house, if need be, nevertheless if it makes him happy then power to him, but for someone who might not be able to buy the entirety of the lumber for this build this information is important, as they can work around the challenges presented

When a humble DIY project becomes a flex
Prices have gone up so much, that this bed would cost roughly 750$ here in germany 😅
Edit: I'm talking about the lumber. Nothing else included in that price 🤪
I think you are mistaking the length of wood becuse they are mesuring 8ft wood for 7.5$, where in herer (Israel) it's 6 metars (20f) for 24$
The closest standard to a 2x4" in germany is 60x120mm. That will cost you 11€/m right now. He is using 30 beams of which each seems to be around 2,50m or 100"
That's 75m total which equals 825€ or 1005,88$. It gets even worse when you account for the off cuts since the standard length is 13m which leaves you with 1,8m of "waste" for every 5 pieces. I did make a mistakes though by converting from € to $
But that now made it even worse 😂
Well actually now that I checked the actual dimensions of a 2x4" (should have done that before 😅) let's go with 40x80mm. Those are made in 5m beams and they are 22,56€ a piece so 338,40€ or 412,64$

I have a bed like that and I spent 20 minutes to clean the dust between ribs
you should get a feather duster, they work well!

It looks nice but my goodness that bed probably weighs around 300 pounds!
Two main issues in this design: 1) dust accumulation between the boards and amount of effort involved to clean it up; 2) those front corners stick out too much so someone can bump into those and ouch! It sure looks cool but not everything cool is practical or comfortable to use.
You can make similar platform beds using like 1/8 the amount of wood so you can pick up varnish to finish it!
