- Well, that didn't take long. The desktop version of EmulationStation works really well with the Steam Deck, and allows you to streamline your emulation setup on this impressive handheld. Plus it works in perfect sync with EmuDeck, allowing you to have preconfigured emulation settings AND multiple options when it comes to organizing your ROM library. In this video we'll go over basic setup, add artwork, and improve how it displays in SteamOS.

Big deck energy.
Top comment.
"yeah man, I wanna do it"
I said this out loud and instantly regretted it.
@@3godzilla3 lobe it
you mean *deck*. I mean, "deck". I mean... DECK. goddammit!
Thanks for the great video! Let me clarify the gc vs gamecube situation. ES-DE (EmulationStation Desktop Edition) uses the RetroPie naming convention and not the Recalbox/Batocera naming convention. For most systems they are identical but there are some differences such as for Nintendo GameCube. ES-DE was originally based on the RetroPie fork of EmulationStation, from around two years ago. I had to go for the RetroPie names to retain maximum compatibility with RetroPie themes, which ES-DE does support. Part of the reason why my application is so fast on the Steam Deck is that I decided to support the Raspberry Pi 4/400 with the most recent release and I had to optimize it like crazy to get it to run somehow OK on that weak device. Overall that's a really good tip if you want to maximize the performance when programming, target a really weak device, it's also good fun and a nice challenge :)
I appreciate all the optimizations you made!
AYE FELLAS ANY REASON WHY MY GAMECUBE GAMES ARE SHOWING UP TRYING TO LOAD AND THEN GOING BACK TO THE MENU ES SCREEN OR IS MY STEAMED DECK BROKEN

Can someone create a registry script for windows that changes the “Yes” button in boxes to “Yeah man, I wanna do it.”?
Steam Deck is really the dream handheld we always wanted
mines been amazing, crazy what kind of power they can fit into such a small package
deadass this is getting more and more true, when my q2 email pops up im finna nut
@@Mozx what's battery like?
@@markdillon9588I can't give you any precise details, I can say that it hasn't died on me at all yet. And iv been playing pretty graphically intensive games on it. maybe I don't play for long enough to completely drain the battery before I get back to a plug, but it definitely feels like a lot!
@@Mozx great to hear sounds like a great device overall :)
Great video as always, two mentions.
1. You can make a symbolic link names 'gc' pointing at the gamecube folder. No need to copy back and forth. Right click in folder, Create New > Link to file or folder.
2. At 4:55 you mention case sensitivity, but Steam Deck microSD cards use ext4 with casefolding, meaning the system doesn't care for case sensitivity.
Great tips, thanks!
I am formatting my sd card in exfat on a windows device, since steam deck gives me an error when ttying to do it on it
man... now with steam deck you 're probably working overtime, but you make some of the most detailed, enjoyable and to the point tutorials for emulation out there! thanks!
Absolutely loving emulation on the deck. Thanks for all the guides. The hardest thing I've run into is figuring out all of the button configurations for each emulator's functions (save states for example).
I didn't have to change the ROM directory path in Emulation Station, so the latest version might already default to the right place! Thank you for this fantastic series of videos - great stuff and very helpful.
i will use and watch your video to do this on my steam, when ever I get it between July-september! Great videos as always.
Woot, my Steam Deck is coming today and can't wait to set this all up. Thanks for the -as always - very clear guide.
Thanks for the info about the artwork! My deck just shipped today, im excited asg.
THIS is what i needed. Q2 cant come soon enough. Also you and ETA prime are in SYNC
Wow…. I just set this up on my Deck and man do I need to grow my ROM library. This is amazing.
bro i was just watching the other emulation video and checked your channel, as you said "Video coming out tomorrow". Aight sweet, good timing on my part
Your killing it with these videos Russ! Keep em comin'.
Thank you for your videos, they are so very helpfull to set everything up. Very clear language, very detailed info, very good videos overall. And it works out fine everytime i follow your guidelines. Looking forward to your new videos about emulation on Steam Deck and any other emulation stuff.
There is an amazing amount of information packed into this video!
This looks like a nice interface to show your emulated games. I just created a collection in Steam for each console (NES, SNES, etc). I added all my games to the corresponding collection. I may try this out. Thanks!
Thank you for all the great tutorials. I would very much like an itch game to steam launcher tutorial video.
Finally I have found the solution to creating custom artwork for the wide icon. Thank you!
Thanks for the setup mate! Perfect now on the steam deck, I even did a custom cover for sonic adventure. Thanks a lot.
Excelent video. This is just the tip of the iceberg. Emulation options in one year will be absolutely amazing. This is why I love this machine.
*18:19**:* That's one of my favorite games of all-time! Ridge Racer for PSP. I had the original and R4 on PS1. Max Tour is nearly unbeatable. I still play that game on my Vita after 17 years. "Midnight Run" is the best. Long, sweeping turns at night.
I just got my email for my steam deck so I’m gonna be rewatching all these again :D thanks for putting in all this work to show how to do it because I’m one of those who need a how to dummies guide and I was able to setup the retroid pocket 2+ in an afternoon so now I look forward to setting up the Steam Deck :D I’ll have to do a lot more tinkering but now I can get through all the wonderful games in my backlog :D
cant wait, just ordered mine today....now for the dreaded wait of when it ships lol. great video, going to have to give this a go.
Thanks a lot I love your videos man. You’re the reason I got into emulation. You make it look easy. Thanks a lot
This is crazy! Great work dude
Very cool. They are so fast. Excellent video.
Enjoyed your videos on steam deck even though I am not getting one. Waiting patiently for my transparent purple Odin Pro.
I probably will never get a steam deck but it’s so satisfying to see nice well put together solutions that ultimately benefit the final user
That makes two of us
I finally got mine have faith
@@pandabearmadness6263 oh it's not about availability (even tho they're not sold in my country), I just wouldn't have an use for it, don't think I will buy one in the near future
Thank you for make this video I was lookin for this
Great setup and video
Bro... I've been following you since the I got into retro gaming emulation consoles (Anbernic, Miyoo, etc.) and I gotta say that for me you are the legend in this topic!
"Do you really wanna do this?"
"Yeah man, I wanna do it"
That dumb quote always put a smile on my face when following one of your tutorials.. AWESOME job Russ!! Keep it up!!
Well things are moving very fast, Emudeck and ESDE guides like this one are now already outdated since the new version of the Emudeck script takes care of basically everything. Amazing work, a Linux based console with the opensource community backing it, this is a dream come true, what a fantastic product!
Thanks! I was looking for something like that. You answered it!
great video and so much learned from it, thank you so much
So awesome, can’t hardly wait till Q3 😩
Can not wait for my steam deck
Thank you very much for this tutorial
Thank you... The Best Video yet for ME to understand :D
Great video now all I need is a Steam Deck hope I get it in April was pushed from Q1 to Q2.
I hope you're in that next week category!
This is very helpful thank you dude you are the best and happy gaming i can play all of my switch games not recent switch games i just have smash bros ultimate sonic forces in sonic mania and super mario odyssey which is run at 60fps so this is very helpful and you also have a hat gaming and i be watching a videos a lot since 2020👍🏻
my steam deck comes this week .. cant wait to run emulation on it especially coin ops :D
I love you. You do amazing work for those of us who just want to easily play the games we grew up with.
Only a few weeks around...and already it's -probably- the best hand-held emulation device.
Can't wait to see how it's gonna be a year...or 3 from now.
+ also the state of GNU\Linux Gaming a emulation.
Honestly, Valve...thx 4 dis.
Nice deck pic 👌🏻
Unbelievable, guys! The Steam Deck is truly a dream come true.
This tutorial is great!
This vid is going to do numbers
Love your content! You're really good about explaining things in a clear and concise way, great job! One question I had, do you have any example or guide on working with multi disc roms from PSX? I tried following a bunch of examples that talk about using an .m3u file and I just can't get it working all the way.
Sure, here you go. This has a written guide and an accompanying video. It's focused on some older handheld devices but the overall theory applies to any emulation setup. retrogamecorps.com/2021/04/22/guide-cd-based-systems-on-retro-handhelds/
@@RetroGameCorps My only issue now is I can't find the es_systems.cfg file in order to update PSX to only look for .m3u. Any idea where it's located? Couldn't find Emulationstation under etc, but did find .emulationstation under home/deck/.emulationstation but it didn't have the es_systems.cfg file...
Great video. I think I'll leave my emulation games on a smaller handheld device , and keep my Deck just for newer games from Steam. Two separate worlds of gaming if you will.
Honestly the deck is pretty awful for that purpose at the moment, haha. Less than 20% or my steam library shows up as playable right now. Emulation is at least helping me find a use for it while Valve tries to bring the PC gaming side out of pre-alpha.
this is fantastic!
I never knew you could add custom artwork to steam library 😱
Yeah it was a really cool moment for me when I figured that out...now I'm trying to resist re-doing the artwork for ALL my games :)
Like how top comments are positive and the newer ones are all questions about how to add and fix stuff
Im so happy to see magic knight rayearth there in ur fav list XD
How can I dm you? :D
Great guide, learned a lot. One question though, how do you install additional themes to EmulationStation? Easy to do on my Raspberry PI, no clue how to do so on this version.
+sub. Good content.
Thanks for this guide, I love how my library of games looks now. One question, I am new to EmulationStation and I am wondering if there is any way to go back to EmulationStation while in a game? Or do I have to close it entirely and reboot it through the Steam Library?
Each time I see a need Retro Game Corp video I ask myself "Do I really wanna see it?, And I say 'Yeah man, I wanna see It' "
Any links giving more explanation of what bios files are and how to set that up? Thanks for the great video!
I just get more and more jealous every day for the people who can enjoy an Steam deck lmao, i hope Valve brings the thing someday to my country.
Just curious, what country are you from? And I hope you get one real soon! :)
I can't wait for SteamOS 3 general availability.
Nice video can u do a video on Redream Dreamcast emulator on steam deck guide
You're doing The Lord's work, son.
4 arcade games I want to emulate when I get my deck, Mortal Kombat II, Street Fighter II, Daytona USA, Sega Rally. I have no idea how to get these games working on anything let alone the steam deck. So an arcade emulation guide would be very much appreciated in future.
It works great even on low end phones so it will work great on steam deck
@@shlokshah5379 As i'd expect, but emulating arcade hardware is like a minefield.
I was really hoping for Launchbox/BigBox compatibility, but this just looks too perfect for the Deck
Great guide, but my experience is still very rough. My controls don't work in Desktop Mode while Steam is running and EmulationStation can't find ROMs even placed in the correct folder with the correct path in the settings. So frustrating that I can't seem to do anything that I see people doing in guides. I can't even use the Steam + X keyboard when Steam is running.
Wow, to think I can use the Steam Deck to additionally handle emulation of all of my older ROM sets... yet another compelling lure for me to get a Steam Deck! I guess I'll be ditching my GPD XD+ in favor of having one handheld device that can play Steam and handle all of the old systems, too...!
Would be good to have a video on adding the games from Itchio. I bought the recent bundle so would like to see how to add them for once I get my Deck (Q3).
I just ordered my Deck. Did you ever make a video for the Xbox Cloud stuff?
Absolutely love it, however (and unfortunately) My deck won't ship until Q3 (after October) in the mean time I'm managing with the AYN ODIN, which brings me to my question...: WHEN IS YOUR FULL SET UP GUIDE FOR THE ODIN COMING OUT!!! PLEASE!!!!
Well, the thing is, I flashed Windows onto it, and the existing guide needs work and so the dev is working on a streamlined process. So for now I have Windows on it and so I can't work on a guide. But in the meantime, my recent RetroArch and Android starter guides were made with the Odin in mind, and contain 90% of what my setup will be for the Odin.
amazing, I was worried about the clutter with steam rom manager. Loved ES on the retropie. Now Im just curious how much data scraping all the video will take up
Not as much as you may think, the videos at ScreenScraper are usually around 2-5 MB. If I average the scraped data for my collection, it's around 6.5 MB per game, and I scrape all media types.
Your content is awesome and thank you so much for this video and all your videos regarding Steam Deck! I can't get duckstation to work through emulationstation, every time I go to run an ISO or CUE file it starts, never opens, and goes back to the emulationstation. I have made sure all paths are correct, anything I could be missing? Maybe download duckstation off the web instead of using the Discover option? Any help is appreciated, thanks!
Classic "yea man, let's do it" hehe
Great guide! The link for the written guide is not working though. Might be a typo there.
Fixed, thanks!
Great video so helpful. I'm so glad the internet lead me to this one. Any way to get video preview to work? I have the video in the right spot and the text in the gamelist. now idea how to get it to work. the same structure works in pi and windows. any help would be awesome since Im using the space for all the video previews
🔥🔥🔥🔥
In your Roms folder on your SD card how do you know what to name each folder? Like Game Boy, and Play Station. Are they Case Sensitive, or is there actually a giant Retroarch torrent file somewhere with all of the Roms and Bios.
Please make a guide for manual scraping for emulationstation? I have nearly all my games backed up and on my deck thats almost 1800 total games. It has been taking hours to get through this list xD
When you are putting your roms on your SD card via your computer, is it necessary for roms that are in zip files to be taken out of those? Or does emulation Station browse through them? Also how do you deal with roms that have additional files like DLC or updates? How do you add those? Also, does the Emulation Station allow you to add cheats?
How did you create the Select + Start to quit shortcut? I'd love to use that
Do you need to have retroarch already downloaded? OR, to rephrase: I already had tetrarch downloaded and configured, but after going through the setup, now when I launch games through emulation station (or tetrarch by itself), it doesn't look good like yours does in the video (e.g., integer mode off, tiny stretched out screens, transparently overlapping the overlays, etc.), the settings are all janky and bad and weird. I'm wondering if because I already had it installed? Any ideas? THANK YOU FOR YOUR AMAZING VIDEOS... I've been following you since early days and bought so many little handhelds because of your recommendations so I very much appreciate all the hard work you do!
Nevermind -- I figured it out. And I love the overlays you've included-- I changed the scale on mine to make the gameboy screen smaller so I could see MORE of the overlay, that's how much I love it!
I can't get this to work no matter what I do. I did everything the guide said, I used it with and without Emulationstation - still nothing. The games close instantly upon launching. This sure seems easy, but it's not easy on my end.
Thanks for the guide.
If l were to add more ROMs to a folder, how do l only scrape the new ROMs only? It keeps doing them all over again for me.
Nice Video. But many PSX roms come with .cue and several .bin files. How can I hide them in the games list?
Could you perhaps also show how you set up PrimeHack ?
do you have any advice on better configuring controls manually?
can you use the steam decks back buttons for hotkeys?
The only emulation guide for steam deck that’s needed is the emulation station one over steam rom manager
Just my two cents
After I got my Roms and bios emulation station simplified everything for me and saved wayyyy more time
So I have custom contols mapped out for certain games via Steam input. Will those controls carry over to EmulationStation?
Few questions:
1) How does this work in docked mode on a tv? Looking to play older games in docked mode with my kids
2) What is the best controller for playing on the EMU? I have PS5 controllers but someone said Xbox?
Thanks!
I thought I won't be interested in this but watched anyway. Maaan this looks so cool that now I don't know if I want to use this or SRM method. But probably this cause it's just awesome. Any downsides to using ES?
One downside is that SteamOS only recognizes ES as a single app. Which means you can't make per-game button mapping within SteamOS, or track your play time per-game. Not a huge deal, but those are features you will get if using the SRM method.
@@RetroGameCorps Some time in the future I will add internal playtime tracking in ES-DE so it can be seen in the gamelist view. You can already make custom mappings per controller inside ES-DE if needed for some reason, but that's only affecting the frontend and not the actual emulators. With RetroArch you could do per-core and per-game settings of course but for standalone emulators I guess it differs whether it's supported or not.
@@RetroGameCorps Hmm I don't care about tracking my time. In theory, could I make a steam controller templates for different games and just swap between them? (If I ever even need this)
one question. Can you put dos-box IN emulation station front end? If so, perfect.
Great video. Region in "Other Settings" is greyed out for me. So I can't change it. No idea why.
I already have the box art and video previews on my arcade pc in launchbox. Can I just copy those files to my Steam Deck SD card and point Emulationstation to them?
Is it me or was this process made easier? I don’t remember having to open each individual emulator
4:27 does your BIOS folder has subfolders? When i extract the retroarch it creates some folders, should i leave it that way, should i extract everything for one folder only without subfolders?
can anyone tell me where i can find those bios files, im pretty new to the emulation game and it took me already a lot of effort just to setup a simple thing... and downloading a rom will probably take a few days at its current kbit speed
How do I change it from box art to Screenshots and vice versa? I have my setting on screenshots but I would like to change it.
Would like to know is how to add the hotkeys to exit if you can make a video showing us that having a little bit trouble I have to hit the start button can you please make a video showing us how to add hockey to exit the emulation like if you have a ram loaded up and you want to exit it and load up another ROM
