Flat Out in a Porsche 917 - Shakedown for Rennsport Reunion V
Vložit
- čas přidán 22. 09. 2015
- The legend: the Porsche 917. The driver: Patrick Long. The only North American employed as a factory racing driver by Porsche. Wins: 24 Hours of LeMans class winner, 3-time ALMS champion, Rolex 24 at Daytona, 12 Hours of Sebring, and class winner at the 2013 Baja 1000.
That's what it takes to drive this car.
Rennsport Reunion V is not just a gathering of the most significant Porsche race cars ever to roll on the Earth, but a reunion of the irreplaceable people who designed, engineered, and drove them to victory.
#PorscheRRV
We live in a world of Hybrids and Race cars full of electronic aids. The sound of the 917 changing through the gears....the best sounding race car ever. Over 50yrs old....and 600+hp in a car that weighed 800kgs. 250mph rocketship.
The guys who drove in that era, at night and in the rain after multiple stints were probably the best drivers ever....period.
Always will be the ultimate race car for me, flaws and all. Incredible motor music. I love F1, but I would rather watch 917s battle with Ferrari 512s any day.
So would i
Amen!! 🏁
Brutal.The ultimate
How dare you suggest that car has any flaws?
The ultimate
Either full throttle or no nothing - that sounds terrifyingly wonderful.
+Scorp969 but the guy just made it up for the video. have seen a 917 navigating from the back of the pits to the track upclose at spa last year. get going from a stand still and driving it in that tight space is physically impoissible. it would simply not work.
+murpy eddie He didn't mean literally, but I would imagine the best way to make sure you have enough grip to go round corners in this car is to keep throttle on after braking to push the weight back onto the rear wheels and maintain grip. Since this car is mid/rear? engine has a very short wheel base and such wide track width and rear contact patch it would suggest the car is susceptible to lift off oversteer and spinning.
exactly, not even possible with a mechanical throttle linkage.
+Scorp969 I believe Porcshe 917's had Bosch mechanical fuel injection. Mechanical fuel injection systems are much cruder than modern EFI systems. The fuel injection system on this car will be tuned to function most effectively at full throttle/high RPM, and is not sophisticated enough to also work well at part throttle (where the engine will run too rich).
+Ragnar +1 in other words, drive it like a Porsche.
The exhaust note.....I'm speechless.
+D1visor Good innit' ;-)
That whooooop sound at circa 6000 rpm is unforgettable. Watch the Steve McQueens Le Mans movie if you haven't already.
The overused term "stirs the soul" is completely appropriate here.
Try BRM V16, there’s several recordings on youtube. A racing car with an actual Demon in the engine, unbelievable.
SvenTviking or the H16
FACT - The Gulf livery makes a car faster. GOOGLE it.
Certified fact
A fat racing engine in a cool looking shape, straight pipes, no bullshit lab to make engines sound the way they do: Perfection.
The best sounding car engine - EVER. The best looking and most charismatic car - EVER. 917 - the ALL TIME top-dog.....!!!!
Wait just a minute.
Before you go crazy, listen to the Matra V12 -- www.roadandtrack.com/car-culture/a13303248/matra-v12-sound/.
And then, listen to the Mazda 4-Rotor 787B -- czcams.com/video/OjwwV20iZYE/video.html
917, of course, is one of the most successful racing cars of all time. But it comes in 3rd place in the "Sounds War."
Also remember the Porsche 956 and 962.
Learn about the 956's Unbeatable Nurburgring Lap Record in freakin' 1983 -- czcams.com/video/vHPiiHDZUro/video.html
Just to add to this fire breathing petrol gargling chorus may I suggest
The Supercharged 1.5 litre V16 BRM P15
- But this 917 is the best sounding car with a prancing horse logo for sure! Go Stuttgart!
idk the mazda 787b is pretty amazing sounding.
I wouldn't mind listening to a 16-cylinder Auto Union Type C engine, but I'd probably be deafened by it.
@@HAL9007 your mother also sounds good at night
917 - Porsche's real Holy Grail.
What a sound!
But the 917 did it first so yeh
& that 917 looks better than any other car to this day..
I beg to differ.... the Holy Grail of cars, period...
SJ never mind the 917-30 !
My God! That car sounds great!
this is my current favorite race car noise. was a gt40 at the texas mile but this is much better. more visceral.
+tscooter22 Agreed: a 917 on full throttle sounds as good or better than any race car ever made.
To me - the 1990 Ferrari 641/2 Formula 1 car had the best sound ever produced by a race car. Hands down.
PO G I agree it sounds amazing but 91 McLaren mp4/6 Honda v12 aww I'm a huge senna fam by the way
the sound of the 917' is just so iconic. I remember watching the 9 hour races at Kyalami in Johannesburg when David Piper in the 917 battled against the Ferrari 512 driven by Ignazio Giunti, who set the lap record during the night. I can still recall the screaming engines of those two cars during the 1970 9 hour.
"The throttle are made for just zero and full... to hold in half is not really meant for this car" If that doesn't make a person a little nervous before driving a 917 said person is already dead.
If the sound of that engine doesn't stir your soul, you're definitely not a gearhead.
Rather, you definitely don't have a soul.
If you're not a gearhead, you don't have a soul anyway! :)
garetjaxx I'm a petrol head, is that still good?
@@mobius-1503 agreed
Listening to that thing makes me want to watch Le Mans with Steve McQueen again
40mins on CZcams, just watched it ,Steve mcqueen LeMans
Best exhaust sounds ever made - That car is so imposing and so domineering. My era as a young boy. Good times !
What a great race car, Performance ,sound, wonderful.
the exhaust note is equal parts classic Porsche flat-6 snarl, and Lamborghini/Ferrari-esque V12 screaming. It's a sound that takes your breath away, and sounds like the car has a soul intake, rather than an air intake. the car is beautiful and terrifying at the same time.
it has a soul for sure. and a very unique sound, like it's saying ''i am the boss!'', it's forcing respect. goose bumps at 4,09
Actually, every porsche does that. at least every flat engine porsche. You guys should hear the porsches here in the rally's, shouting, hammering and roaring trough the woods in real life. You hear them coming from Kilometers away, autoritarian, like you said " I'm the boss". Check for example "Van de Wauwer Porsche 997 GT3 " in youtube... But off course nothing beats the real life poetry.
The harmonics right around 4:05 makes my speakers tremble!
Brm
combing the best of both, you have the turbo charged flat 12
This video leaves me wanting more! That sound was so pure. Vintage race cars are where it's at.
The sound at 4:08. Just music to my ears. The 917 is still my all time fave. Those were the days.
Those last 30 seconds gave me the goosebumps! What a beautiful and brutal sound!
This is a video I keep coming back to time and again. The 917 was... is... the greatest race car ever made. Period.
The sound of the engine stirs me to my core every time I hear it. And yes... the last few seconds of the video literally bring me to tears. I can close my eyes and simply get lost in the sound of the 917 as it screams. No car has ever sounded better, from any era. What a gift Porsche gave the motor heads of the world.
McQueen has got to be looking down and smiling.
no hes burning in Hell.
Right!
I saw steve coming out of the whisky a go go in 67. got in a green jag.
Must have been his XK-SS, another incredible machine that will never be duplicated.
LeMans is a shit movie made by an overrated actor.
the flat 12 engine in this is SUCH a beast. The downshifts sound like mini nuclear bombs going off..sooo good
the last 15 seconds of the vid were great......
The sound of the engine brings tears to my eyes and goosebumps a plenty
At the 1971 1,00 kms of Spa-Francorchamps this car driven by Pedro Rodriguez and Jackie Oliver raced door-to-door with the # 20 car of Jo Siffert and Derek Bell over the older 14.100 km/ 8.8761 mile circuit. The # 21 won at an average speed of 249.069 kph/153.273 mph, 4 seconds ahead of the #20. The winning average at the Indy 500 that year was 253.85 kph/157.735 mph by Al Unser Sr. So they had quite the battle. Unfortunately, Pedro Rodriguez was killed at the Norisring in Germany on July11th, 1971 in a Ferrari 512M when he was ridden into a wall and the car burst in flames. Jo Siffer died in a flaming crash at Brands Hatch in a BRM F1 car on Oct. 24th, 1971. After Siffert's death, fire extinguishers and driver's air supply became mandatory and a redesign of the cars to move the fuel tank behind the drivers from along side the drivers was made. Although the numbers were used by Steve McQueen in the movie Le Mans, this car didn't appear in the movie.
Jo Siffert drove the "old, real Spa" (as Vic Elford calls it) at an average speed of 162 mph in a Porsche 917. Not in the race, but still ... talk about big cojones.
At 4:09, perhaps the single greatest engine sound ever!
It's amazing how contemporary looking this car is all these years later. Beautiful. Thanks for sharing
Still one of the very best looking and sounding sportscars ever built!
50 yrs later still nothing else even close and really never will .It stands alone at the top of mountain for eternity
such a beautiful car with a beautiful livery.
I fell madly in love with this car in the movie Lemans!
Wow! Just love those 917k and that flat 12 - wow! Thank you for sharing
That upshift at 4:08 sounds exactly like the gear change in the movie Lemans - the completion of the first lap the view goes from inside the cockpit as the 917 comes down the main staight past the pits and it shifts into high - same exact sound!
My favorite car of all time was in the movie LeMans. The #25 white 917 that led the race early on. Had a tail, not the same rear end as the blue and orange Gulf team cars.
love that sound! the 917 has to be one of my favorite racing cars ever
Today the supercars haven't the essence of the old supercars and this car is the best example :)
Insane Driving!
+SupercarsGT Cuanta razón tienes amigo, esa esencia y esa pureza de motores no lo tienen ni de lejos los coches actuales. Larga vida al 917 !!
+SupercarsGT They do in their own right, it's just been forced by technology.
That's because today's supercars are built to be driven quickly by rich kids with no idea or clue of how to drive. They're trying to make the performance accessible. Back then with older tech you need talent. The Dodge ACR is an example of a car that needs a decent driver to hustle it.
vidurc i couldnt agree more . bugatti veyrons are built for people like justin beiber , just an example , so he doesnt kill himself showing of how rich he is . take somebody like him give him the keys to an f40 and see how quickly he totals himself and the car. supercars are ruined now in my opinion . more likely to be seen cruising around in cities like london or monaco than blasting up mountain passes or being thrashed round tracks
No other engine makes this kind of sound.👍🏻👍🏻❤️❤️❤️
Nothing beats a flat 12 from Porsche. The most bad ass Porsche built, in my opinion.
Its so fast and sooo beautiful😍😍😍
Holy smokes!! Never have I heard anything like this....truly incredible sound.
Wow, the sound of these cars makes one eyes tear up a bit. Just soo awesome!
Still have most of my 917 slot cars which was my fave in the 70s....The sound of that flat 12 is impossible to duplicate
That engine sound WOW - awsom 917 flat 12
Piëch's masterpiece.
That's by far the most incredible and perfect video I've seen since years. Thank you!
I need to train in GTR2 now.
imagine if this engine /gearbox had been put in a road going car..OMG the sound!!
My dads friend had one, when he'd died we were helping to clear out the garage, everybody else was to fat to get in the 917 to drive it out in to the yard, I was the only one slim enough the get in, it was the most exciting 15 seconds of my life, so loud, still have two mufflers laying around somewhere
I'm in love with that car...gotta feel for this automobile😍
Absolutely love seeing that car being driven like it was designed for!
This is how these old race cars need to be, still going out on the track and racing!!
Came back to this video just cause of the sound. And that car corners well too!
That sound, its literally music!
I always enjoy those videos with someone giving a talk while driving, thus limiting his driving attention to the minimum, in a sport car, on a twisting road... and usually holding the wheel casually with a few fingers on top of that! Which removes virtually any chance to react well if an unexpected event occurs (from others or from his lack of attention). Gives a very good image of sport car drivers and an inspiring lesson to future drivers, well played.
"Zero and Full. Half way? It's not really made for this." Porsche giving us profound life advice.
4:00 fechem os olhos e sintam o arrepio com esse som! espetacular !
My favourite Le Mans car of the lot. The noise that comes out of that flat-12 is glorious. Love the growl, even more than the noise out of an old Ferrari or Aston.
What an awesome machine, and the sound! I love it.
The sound, the sound. Oh my...speechless.
Glorious. And a very pleasant commercial right in the middle. :-)
Superb exhaust note.music to ears.👍
Sinister, but beautiful looking car at the same time. So raw. Bone chilling cabin and a sound to match!
That sound! The sound of gods hammering at the forge.
this engine roars like a beast! awesome!
To me this will probably always be the most beautiful racecar ever built...and I was lucky enough to see (and hear) some of them on the Nürburgring GP Track 10 years or so ago...wonderfull...
That sound!
perfect! great job...just wish it was longer
That is the most gorgeous car I have ever seen!
I grew up with a father who is pure Tifossi but we both love Porsche I came home from the hospital after birth in a 356. In my opinion the 917 is the most beautiful (modern) sports car ever built.
The exhaust is like music.
What a beautiful sound
Oh! God ! The sound of those engines ..... glorious!!
Great video! Brings back many memories. The days when race car driver's drove the car's, not the car's driving the driver.
I believe this was the car Steve McQueen drove in the movie Le Mans.
This is a great video. Thank you!
Amazing stuff
I'm a Ford GT40 fan but these cars are worthy of respect a truly formidable race machine.
damn what a monster, and sounds awesome to
Damn, that thing sounds amazing!!!
This was beautifully done.
When race cars were race cars, driven by true pilots, and not computers-on-wheels controlled by robot-drivers. Monster flat-12 sound !
My old boss Bruce McCaw owns one of these. When I worked for him, I drove a 964 club racer. What a sweet ride!
Wow a 4 minutes video that felt like 20, superb!!
beauty of speed..
Sounds just AMAZING!! :)
WOW thank for the glorious audio!....oh and looks the business too
Got to hear this car today, man it sounds brutal
The sound of that beast just makes me happy.
The 917 engine was a perfect engine, it had no flaws.
the sound that thing nakes is awesome 😍😍😍👍👍👍
That last shot with the exhaust sound.. mm mm good
The 917 and the autounio are my all time favourite sounding machines
Sounds superb......!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
what an incredible car
that 917 sent shivvers down my spine!
0:29 My goodness, its like waking a sleeping dragon or something.
A binary throttle, on - off
I love the sound of the 917 revving out, :D.
one of the greatest race cars of all times .... and looking at the dire electrified future it probably won't change any more
That sound is just too delicious..
that sounds amazing
The Gulf Porche 917 is my favorite sounding race car😊
Watch LeMans, the movie with Steve McQueen (1971) for more... Of this great footage and sound.
