Robert Llewellyn test drives the new, affordable small electric crossover SUV, the MG ZS EV (also known as the MG EZS).
Although there were some slight oddities and complexities (okay, quirks) with the driver interface and charging in the MG ZS EV, Robert really enjoyed driving this new entrant into the electric car market.
As predicted, electric cars are getting cheaper to buy, (they are already much cheaper to run).
Could this eco friendly SUV help bring electric vehicles to the masses?
The MG zero emissions ZS EV features a water-cooled 44.5 kWh lithium-ion battery pack, a front-mounted electric motor which delivers 105 kW / 143 PS of power and 353 Nm of instant torque. Water-cooling manages the battery temperature allowing frequent rapid charging and improved range, with 163 miles (or 262 km) from a single charge on the WLTP combined cycle. (Using WLTP’s city cycle the range is certified at 231 miles / 372 km). Car and lithium-ion battery covered by MG’s 7 year warranty.
MG ZS EV Excite available from £28,495 OTR.

Even though I'm watching this nearly 3 years later, this review is still relevant now. As a Tesla owner, I recently drove the MG ZS EV for a week and was properly impressed. It is feature-packed, and also has features that my Model S does not possess such as the blindspot indicators on the wing mirrors and great all-round visibility. The MG ZS EV is excellent value-for-money and I would not hesitate to own this if my family needs a second EV.

Superb video. Have just driven this car with my wife ( she drove it too) on city roads. Both impressed. Very smooth like the e-golf. Amazing for the price. Minors I noticed. The visibility ( lights , status charging) & accesibility of the charger is not very functional but not a major problem. I hope they improve / update this asap. Second you can not pull the steering wheel frontwards ( up & down you can) but you can move your seat & degree of that seat. I am quite a tall person ( 185 cm). The steering wheel position felt good enough with these adjustments. Drives very smooth in the city. A lot of space inside & the boot was truelly impressive compared to our vw golf M6. Suprising for the size of the car. Plenty of head & knee space too. Wish I had tested it on the highway. The only thing that really bothered me was the real range (140 -165) & that there is no auto update system like Tesla & VW ID3. This could have improved the range slightly over time (software) together with other updates of the software like new roads & closest charging stations,.... Felt & looked modern ( not outdated ). DO NOT MOCK THIS CAR UNTILL YOU HAVE DRIVEN IT. Was worried about MG's quality but the chinese take over seems to have a great effect on this car & maybe the brand. The quality did not feel cheap at all for this price. It is not an audi ofc, different price class. Very happy I drove it.

Yeah, the main issues seem to be the outer grill opening out-and-up, meaning it stays in your direct eyeline... and the second issue is the fit (and apparent lack of easy-grab handle) on the inner covers.
Whilst the first issue may be harder to address, the second is something they could change very easily (and if they don't a home 'fix' using some superglue to stick a pull-tab to each one would probably sort it)

Quirky review Robert but just a comment on the Charge Port I think you find you struggled firstly to remove the CCS covers because they'd been inserted in the incorrect order after the previous charge and secondly when you replaced them although you inserted the DC cover first you inserted the Type 2 cover upside down! Whoever thought CCS should have those rubber bungs anyway. TBH, I thought the way the grill pops out and up was going to be horrendous, but in practice stand a little back from the front and it isn't; although a little bit of LED lighting illuminating the charge port would be a nice touch rather than the pulsating LEDs in the MG badge during charging an opportunity for another Quirky Comment missed. It looks as if you were driving an early press car as customer cars and the Demo cars in dealers now seem to have more responsive Infotainment system. Pity you didn't explore the "MG Pilot" as it has lots of goodies like MG's version of Pro-Pilot and is brilliantly competent lane following etc

Disappointed that it doesn't have all the cameras like all new cars nor cllimate control but apart from that, AND the low range (263 kms), it's spot on. If I do buy one, being as a designer (I design toys and games - I made the MasterChef game and the Huggie Snuggle teddy bear to name a couple), I would immediately make a front bonnet boot compartment for it to store the cables and such. Why keep them in the back? There's plenty of room for me to get something blow moulded to fit and leave the bottles still accessible.
