- Heat is the killer of PC components, and overly hot components don’t perform to the best of their abilities. It’s a sad fact, but the stock coolers from AMD and Intel included with the lower end CPUs tend to be poor performers when it comes to heat dissipation and they’re usually loud as well. When you’re a budget builder, it’s easy to forgo getting a new CPU cooler if one is included with your processor, and it’s also a component you can easily upgrade in the future.
However, what if there was CPU cooler that was both extremely inexpensive and performed really well? In today’s video, I ask and answer the question of whether or not the Thermalright Assassin X 120 R SE CPU cooler can outperform AMD’s Wraith Stealth cooler for the Ryzen 5 5600G.

My final thoughts, massive testing. If you want this CPU to last, Thermalright makes a great AIO that is only $60. I know it's much more expensive than the $20 cooler you get here, but it's a massive quality AIO that will chill this under max load for years to come. I highly recommend going with a better cooler for this hot running 7600x. This is also the recommendation from Gamers Nexus, and numerous Reddit users. That said, this cooler is good enough for casual gamers, however the 7600x has performance benefits that can handle the newest games without bottlenecks. Thermalright makes AIO coolers for as low as $55 for 360mm coolers. Totally worth it. AM5 is the only direction you should be going in, am4 is just a silly option at this point. Great video. Cheers.

I recently bought a locally pre-built computer centered on an Intel i7 12700 (built-in graphics) and stock Intel cooler. After reading and watching a number of CZcams reviews like yours, I decided to replace the stock cooler with the same Thermalright Assassin cooler reviewed here, and simultaneously added the ThermalRight LGA1700-BCF bend-resist frame. I'm not a gamer, but bought the computer mostly for RAW photo development, so I doubt I'll place face the same kind of

Paired with my Ryzen 5 3600 and giving me solid 64c in Cinebench i was about to buy Noctua NH-D15 but it was hella expensive for my budget so i went for Assasinn X 120 SE definitely worth it if you're on low budget. And this is my first ever Thermalright product ever love it so far.

Living in Hanoi, Vietnam with temperature outside is about 30-35C (33C at the time I posted this comment), I hook this baby up with a stock Ryzen 7 5800x, a cheap Xigmatek Nemesis case with a Asrock Challenger Pro AMD 6700xt (3 fan), 3 cheap front fan + 1 rear/back. The temperature when running Cinebench R23 is 90C at maximum load (90 degree C is also the maximum temp that AMD set for this bad boy running). Quite hot, definitely the 5800x is too much for this one. But when it is come into gaming, the temp is quite good since the CPU is not always running in maximum, about 70-80 degree at 70% - 80% load.
Since I'm not using a fresh Windows install, in idle, with cpu load about 1%, the temperature is about 47-50C. With chrome running (about 20 tabs opened), cpu load about 5-10%, the temp is about 50- 55C. So to use this cpu cooler with the hot cpu like 5800x on daily work, I have to set the maximum power in windows power options to 90%, the temperature drop 10 degree to 43-44 in average with chrome running (about 20 tabs opened), cpu load about 5-10%.
A quite good cooler with the price point of 12 US dollar (290k Vietnam Dong). Definitely a choice for a cheap build
I'm using the Thermalright Assassin King 120 SE on my Ryzen 9 3900x max TDP 105w at full load it fluctuates around 75-77c
Love ur test method. What was the estimated ambient temperature of the room ? Was it like 28 degree celcius ?
Thank you! Based on the time of year, the ambient temperature was probably around 22C or 72F. I probably still had my A/C running at this time to keep the house cool in the late summer/early autumn weather.

If they are similarly noisy at the same fan %, but the Assassin X does a much better job at cooling, then couldn't you adjust the fan curve to get similar temperatures at a lower fan speed = quieter system with the Assassin X?

Also, is it possible to change colors or turn off the RGB on the cooler fan using a program?
Those orange standoffs came with the cooler. To change the fan color, either use the motherboard's software (if there is any) or use something like Signal RGB.
Thing is tray CPU costs less.
Tray CPU + this cooler is like 25-30 USD less than Box CPU + stock cooler.
So I had time to do stress testing with OCCT, which is much more in-depth and accurate than CineBench, and comes with it's own monitoring software, so you can cut down on background apps. It also has a default setting for safety features, like stopping the test if you hit 90c. This cooler performed poorly over a 10 minute stress test. However, this could be because I need to repaste my cpu, which I plan to do and I will write final thoughts. I should mention that in game, this cooler performed well. But with any CPU heavy game, you may run into issues. My plan is to re-paste, this time using a CPU AM5 paste guard and a even possibly a spreader for my thermal compound. With the paste guard its very easy to re-paste and the one I'm purchasing is only $9 on Amazon, it screws in, is not cheap plastic, has anti bend properties and is a complete replacement for the standard positioning guard on your motherboard. I think that will be the absolute best test. Idle and browsing the cooler is enough, but I'm not currently sure I could recommend this for the Ryzen 7600x or higher CPUs.
My case has tons of airflow, it's massive in size and can even handle E-ATX boards, so lots of space. If it does not preform well after all that, I might opt for a better air cooler or even maybe an AiO watercooler, because they have recently really come down in price. However, they are loud.

@@MiddleofKnowhere I'm disappointed. I realize the 7000 series AM5 processors, especially the 7600x can get toasty. But I should note, PBO was not enabled. Everything was set to default. I will post final results when my AM5 guard gets here. Should have done it right of the bat but others talked me out of it. For less than $10 you get a 4g tube of thermaltake paste and a specially made CPU encasement that completely replaced the standard latch style processor holder. With this you totally unscrew the old latch from your board, screw this more sturdy bend proof holder, that also blocks thermal compound from spreading into those annoying grooves. This allows for optimal thermal spread. Again I'm cheating a little by using Arctic MX-6, rather than the lesser TF4 (still decent though), and I'll get the best results. I'm not giving up on this cooler just yet, as error could rest with me. I know it's not my set-up, as everything else runs cool. But when installing, I could have made poor contact, which as I'm sure you know can also create air bubbles and things of that nature. This time I'll eliminate any chance for error on my end.

If you're talking about with the Thermalright Fan, you'll need to see what motherboard software you have as the fan should be plugged in directly into a motherboard 3-pin argb header, and the softwareis where you can change it. If you can find out which company made your motherboard, I could give you the software name to download. Otherwise if it came with a remote, you'll do it that way. You might also be able to change the colors in the BIOS as well. Some motherboards allow for that as well.

Don’t connect a 3-pin argb fan to a 4-pin rgb port. They are different voltages and you’ll break the device.

between the thermalright assassin king 120 se and the thermalright assassin x 120 r se which one would you recommend ? (I'm trying to save as much as possible but I don't want sacrifice too much peformance due to cutting corner and I don't plan on doing any overclocking either)
Depends on your CPU really. They are priced nearly identical, but the King has 5 heat-pipes and the assassin X has 4. I'm unsure how much of a difference 1 pipe will make. I'd go for the King probably since price is so close. It does add more dissipation due to the 1 extra heat-pipe, just not much.

Damn, my wraith stealth fan sounded like a jet engine compared to yours. I had to replace it with a 80mm after-market fan before I went insane. I don't think the QC is particularly good on the stock coolers.
That's crazy. I don't think I've ever had a super loud one at idle, but they get loud under load.
I would be very interested to see how this cooler performs on the Ryzen 5 7600x. Although I guess I will find out for myself in about a week. Is the setup, as in the mounting equipment that comes with the cooler, the same for AM5 as it was for AM4?

@@MiddleofKnowhere Will do. I will be using Arctic MX-6 thermal compound. Only thing that really sucks is the am5 cpu's have a weird design where each square has side dip holes that make application difficult.

The 5600G got anywhere from 4.3 to 4.5 GHz all cores during the Cinebench runs that I observed. The 2700K is a 4-core CPU, so this cooler still might work for it even if it is a 95 Watt TDP CPU. The Assassin X 120 R SE product page on Amazon says, "TDP is 125 to 225W" for this cooler, so it ought to work.

@@galaxiandosuenos3967 According to GamersNexus that cooler reached about 78 degrees max combined with that CPU. I would recommend a Thermalright Phantom Spirit or Peerless Assassin (the phantom spirit being the successor to the later).

Just bought this and installed it. I'm using an msi b550 gaming gen 3 motherboard and I can't find anywhere to plug in the aRgb cable. Does anyone have any suggestions?
I'm afraid you're out of luck with regards to this. The B550 Gaming Gen 3 only has 2 4-pin RGB ports and 0 ARGB. If this is the motherboard you're talking about, then yeah no ARGB headers. www.msi.com/Motherboard/B550-GAMING-GEN3/Specification

Honestly, I'm unsure. The 7600 is a 65W tdp cpu, and the 7800x3D might generate more heat. You may want to look at the peerless assassin which is around the $32 mark and is another very well regarded Thermalright CPU Cooler.
how do you configure the ARGB?
I used the AsRock Polychrome software for this build to configure colors and what not since I was using an AsRock motherboard.
Okay. Ryzen 5 7600X with this cooler, after running in BIOS for one hour, I am at a constant 36c. Mobo at 32c. Cooler fan speed at 30% 750rpm, system fans at 50% 950rpm. This is first post BIOS, so I have not messed with the fans yet. Doing a BIOS update and installing OS. Then I will slow things down a bit and give more detailed results, as well as running heavy loads.
Things to note however: Tested in Montech Air 903 (3 140mm fans in front, 1 140mm exhaust, huge mid tower case able to house E-ATX boards if needed, so lots of airflow.) amazing case for $70. Can say enough good things. Also, I did not use stock paste for this test, as I never do. I used Arctic MX-6 thermal compound for this test, which is a high quality paste, so I should mention that. Will post more results over the next couple days. But for the 7600X, which has a rumor of running hot, this heat sink does a great cooling job on the CPU for under $20.

@@cosmoboi8890 No problem. I would recommend spending an extra $5-10 on custom thermal compound though. Try Arctic MX-6 or Grizzly paste. An extra $5 is nothing in the grand scheme. Let me know how it works out.

@@cosmoboi8890 I hope it works out great for you. My recommendation only comes because of a couple other individuals I spoke to in a Reddit thread that told me they were unable to mimic my thermals using the stock compound (although it's possible there could have been other factors) and good paste can be purchased for only a few dollars. Also it's a pain in the butt to switch compounds after the fact. You need to remove the heat sink, clean it with 90-99% isopropyl alcohol, which can sometimes require removing the CPU, which is the last thing you wanna do, especially with an AM5 socket, and then reinstall which is considerably more challenging when your Mobo is already in your case. So that's my advice, but it's your computer and I hope your build comes out fantastic. And it's a good time to build now with NVMe, RAM and PSU prices increasing. Best of luck to you!

Based on some cursory research it looks like the thermalright assassin x would fit.
I can agree, that this a fantastic Budget CPU Cooler, performing very well and the Cooling results are great for around that Price Range. I removed my Stock Cooler from AMD and replaced with the Assassin X 120 R SE. For some reason my AM5 System i build i had with the Stock Cooler around 50 degrees in Idle with the Assasin 42 Degrees so i can confirm the around 8 degrees. For me at 85% and above the Noise Level it's pretty similar to the Stock Cooler from AMD without the rattling.

83max is probably about right if using the stock Wraith cooler, or are you referring to using the Assassin X? Is there enough thermal paste on the CPU, did you remember to take the sticker off the cooler, and is there enough contact of the cooler onto the CPU? Maye make sure the screws are tightened enough, but don't go too tight. Also the 5600 might run a tad hotter than the 5600G for whatever reasons as they are different CPUs.

hello i just set my bios to default at first and my temps went down from 80s to 60s and i enabled pbo again to see if thats the cause of the high temps but guess what no my temps are still in 60s and i dont know the reason why@@JuneAtHomePH
