    In a nutshell: He left the car for four weeks with a rather low SoC and then the 12 V battery didn't have enough voltage to start the car. For me this is an isolated fault with this particular car.

      Thanks, but you're missing the other half of the nutshell with that comment, also this issue is wider than just me.

    I feel for you. I have had the 12V battery give out on both my Mercedes EQS and Tesla S. The main battery bank will not charge the 12V battery. MB gives you an alert when it is low. Tesla does not. The EV industry needs to fix this but Porsche is not the only manufacturer with the problem.

    • @TABonTV

      It just seems so nonsensical that this is an issue right? Like having a reserve fuel tank but not being allowed to use it!

    I just subscribed for your other videos since I just acquired a taycan but still... this was a 13 minute rant when it could of been a 2 minute video. I understand that you have to accomodate the youtube algortithm but man I couldn't bare this video. Otherwise, good stuff!

    Another great updated mate....thanks very much. I purchased a Nextbase IQ dashcam (connect to OBD) and it does worry me i could drain the 12v battery....thankfully to date no issues. If it happened is it something we do could ourselves with a battery pack to recharge...... or do Porsche advise against that ?? Great content Tab keep it coming !!!

    Quick question: do you know if the new Taycans also have this issue (given that the one you are driving is probably not the latest)?

      @@TABonTV thanks mate! tbh found your channel to be the only one that offers a balanced and practical overview of not just the good but also the bad in Taycan and it has helped me a lot in at least being aware of these issues before I hopefully pull the trigger on this. Probably gonna go with Sport Tourismo as the base Taycan seems a bit restrictive for tall passengers in the rear.

      That’s not true though as most will have PCP agreements where Porsche need to take them back as part of the finance agreement.
      The depreciation element is therefore irrelevant if keeping for the entire term.

    • @verynormalman
      @verynormalman Před měsícem

      @@CSL1967 Yes new is the way to go. I believe Porsche is going to reduce it's interest rate on Taycan's very soon. Probably as the new model is released. Or definitely after the initial flutter of interest has waned. The new car is a whole generation of improvement. The old car looks more redundant now. I suppose we are entering the i phone time for cars, where they have designed short life. Both in terms of batteries and upgraded components.

  • @Chris12211
    @Chris12211 Před měsícem +1

    Good video. It’s a shame the app you have doesn’t indicate the percentage of capacity the 12v battery has. This could be useful for monitoring battery condition and charge.
    As you say the system on the car should monitor the 12volt battery and add additional charge as and when needed to prevent the car from turning into a nice shiny paper weight, which potentially could leave you stranded.
    Seems like a simple oversight for something that could cause owners a bit of a headache.

    The shop I work at has 3 taycan 4S, one with bad hv battery, blown transmission and the 3rd one has electrical dash issues. Lucky the third party warranties are covering most if fixes. Total cost to fix 3 in the $60k range. I love the car but the cars gremlins are appearing after 3 yrs.

    Exactly right, I have the same problem with the EQS which does precisely the same thing! After the first time, the RAC (EQS specialist) man told me he has updated the system, the car has been left on the driveway and guess what, it’s dead again. At least 50% power in the enormous battery, but the 12v system is dead. It’s a joke that acts this expensive and this level of smarts do not top up the 12v system in order to not make it inoperable. When I heard your WNK1 comment, I was already there, could not find a more appropriate name for this problem!!! Also not clear in the Mercedes information or Q&A - obviously Porsche and Mercedes share their issues, absolutely something they need to fix.

    Unfortunately, I also have to confirm that my Taycan also turned into a brick a few times. This was not due to the 12volt battery, but according to my dealer due to a faulty electric charge door. That cover which slides aside in a very fine way when you want to charge your Taycan can get stuck halfway. And when a Taycan opens one hatch (halfway), it closes the other charging hatch. A low battery then won't get you very far.
    In addition, also experienced:
    - Tailgate that stops working (3 days before ski trip with the Taycan);
    - Parking cameras failing occasionally (repaired by replacing cameras);
    - Not enough gas in the cooling system;
    - Sudden 40% of charge rate gone (should now be fixed by replacing electric interior heater and reprogramming thermal management);
    - Spontaneous reboots of PCM while driving.
    The dealer has fixed all the above problems within warranty, but obviously not confidence inspiring.
    Fortunately, I am blessed with a healthy dose of cognitive disonance and am still impressed with the Taycan. For daily use, it is an absolute delight to drive. The device is an ideal combination of sporty and comfortable as far as I am concerned.

  • @joevandura9625

    Hi.
    Yessss, the problem is the cut of of the 12V while parking and if you ask by the app the car for information or actions the 12V won't get charged...
    Normally it's a good thing when the car is parked and the 12V has no drain by just waiting for the next move. It minimizes the "vampire drain" of the hv system.
    BUT! If you're using the control manual of the app, Porsche disconnects the hv battery! Only if you're using the preheating the system will start up because the PTC gets power from the hv battery!
    So if you're doing it in a Porsche like Tesla you will get vampire drain about 1% to 2% hv battery storage per day!! Tesla always looks on the 12V battery when actions required via app like open/close, preheat, dog mode, camping mode, sentry mode etc pp. Every time you ask for your Tesla - also if only just want a status update - the whole system is starting up and drains the hv battery.
    So what is best? Difficult.
    If you park your Tesla on the airport parking lot for 2 weeks, you should have a AC connection or a 100% full hv battery! With sentry moder on the hv battery is dead after about 10 to 15 days.
    Do you want it in a Porsche?
    Okay, what should Porsche do right now?
    Think they have to program a code in the PCM who takes care of the 12V by requesting or actions via app. Reaching the critical point of 11,9 V should automatically start the charging from the hv battery. This will take about 20 milliampere or less and the 12V is safe.
    Stay safe! 👍 👍 👍

    • @TABonTV
      @TABonTV  Před měsícem +1

      Yeah can kind of see what was trying to be achieved with this approach but I do think it could be better. For me it seems a very binary approach and surely there is the ability to get a bit more intelligence into the system. Even the ability to get it on an emergency charge would help...
      Thanks for the comment and stay safe! 👍🏻

    Seems to be an issue across all EV and PHEV brands
    A lot of the time it's the actual battery that's faulty or not up to scratch
    Rumour has it during the "parts shortage" era a lot of rubbish batteries were fitted to meet delivery times.
    The other possibility is something called Zombie Drain, where because the software isn't getting the HV to charge the 12v , certain systems still pull on the 12v and drain it when parked for long periods.

      Finally replaced the 12V on my US Fiat 500e after 6 years after there was not enough juice to activate the DC solenoids. Turned out I could just attach jumper cables to the 12V and I was good to drive it to the garage to get a replacement installed.
