*Stanford from the US, is a team that exepected to be a threat this year.*
Stanford car, the first one to burn
it is a threat..
.. burning other cars if at close proximity
They painted their car black. A color that absorbs heat. That is why their batteries overheated
@SirManDudeGuy1 no, they were clearly having a purely electrical issue and should have pulled off shortly after the start if it was allowed. It could be anything from damage to a cell from modification to cell imbalance
So that's how the fires in Australia started.
Lol
Finally the truth
Yea
Not a Jewish space laser?
I hope Stanford isn't discouraged by their early departure from the race, especially the driver! She should be proud of herself for being able to recognize there was an issue before the team could tell her to get out! She also responded very quickly and efficiently when escaping the car. Please, keep racing, all of you!

Stanford 100% needs to engineer a better emergency exit system.
Better yet, engineer a better car.
Don't judge them they are newbies
@@WarguyPlayz well actually both because it should take no time in an emergency to escape and the car battery should include a cooling system to decrease the chance of a fire
@@magicgluestoneny2487 you wouldnt be saying that if she had died
ikr, why hold the canopy with a million elastic bands that need undoing, if instead, they could just make it hinge away like in all the other cars
The fact that the car was glitching at the starting line would have had me worried about it catching fire.

@John Smith it was a pretty close call when it actually did light on fire though
@@Silver-Arrow yes because she started to panic. Romain Grosjean she isn't. 😂
Pretty normal for American made cars to break down or catch on fire.
It's the American way.

About the temperature problem on minute 15:10, they could place a polarized film in the front of the cockpit and a reflective one on top that also covers the back.
That would definitely reduce cockpit temperature a lot while not adding any significant weight to the vehicle.
The reflective material could also send ricochet photons to the solar panels.
@Rik rik aerodynamics
@Rick3y Rick3y - A small vent hole at least in the rear cockpit or rear vents somewhere to allow inside heat out. I know it's all about aerodynamics, but what are the rules and what's allowed?

They even illegally block their competitor who passed them in the next video. Horrible sportsmanship
@@ender-gaming Don't make stuff up. If they made an illegal move they would have been disqualified. People hate on Michigan because they're the best team from America every year.
@@Ergzay no, we have CZcams Premium. Michigan was forced to serve a 1 hour time penalty before official race end was recorded for them. They very much broke the rules. Michigan’s lead car illegally blocked Tokai from passing for quite some time, by basically speeding up or slowing down depending on traffic passing zones and oncoming traffic, to prevent passing. That is against race rules as convoy cars required to allow the solar cars to pass.

I think this race requires more natural conditions. It's not safe putting someone in that oven of a cockpit.
The cars wouldnt run in normal conditions, the outback was chosen for its strong sunlight
That's also why it doesn't make solar cars a reasonable alternative (at least currently).
@@Sonathan1893 thats not the endgoal. battery technology and technology in energy savings is more important
yeah the race shouldn't be about being able to withstand crazy temperature and swapping drivers. just set a maximum temp in the cockpit with a sensor that the organization would monitor. less stops, less water to carry, this way they would come up with great ideas on how to improve heat management. clever ways to dissipate heat, using venturi effect, maybe even harness some energy from the heat that is removed ?
@@MrTeka500 You don't need a solar car for that though.
These youngsters really give us hope for the future. It is so heartening to see them enjoying themselves so much, whilst doing amazing things for humanity and the environment.
9:55 When racing in the outback, your car needs temperature level checking.
It can easily go up to 30C or even reach 50C in the extreme dry areas with only desert.
Also, a small air inlet can help by cooling the electronics AND the driver,
and if and when properly placed, it won't cost much. In fact, the lowered need for
things like cooling fans and such, may offset this.

just when i thought them only mentioning "Japanese team has a beautiful car" was hilarious
this is great entertainment, "I have started the race, I guess" Stanford
Why don’t they tint the windows heavily for the drivers to help reduce the heat Adds almost no weight to the car.
They have to be street legal, so if they tint the windows they wouldn’t be
Seriously lol
@@Layeredfire They can tint the windows, they can’t tint the windshield, but they can tint the side windows. They could also add a sun strip tinting to the top of the windshield, or they can tint the windshield with a UV reflective film and not break the rules as long as it does not darken the windshield so cops can still see in.
They should paint the inside of the car white.
Why not a one way or two way mirror on all cars i mean dont you hate getting blinded by brights
That Stanford driver came seconds from being a fatality when the batteries ignited. This is dangerous stuff guys!
I also felt that. I was teary-eyed. That's really sad having your race cut short, but it's a learning opportunity.

It seems insane to me that no one has active cooling
20 kg isnt a lot compared to 500kg for a tesla model 3, passive cooling should work with a better design

Wow, I didn’t expect to have Derek to host a video on Seeker
Bruh as if you document a race in Australia but still use Farenheit to measure tempereture XD
The Dutch have won this multiple times. And we have barely any sun here lol
They had to learn how to get more power efficiently per square inch of the car, and be more aerodynamic to go further off less sun due to the home climate haha
@@taylorsmith9115 yeah well it worked out well lol
@James Freeze they have tested everything first in the netherlands. at the university. or do you really think they pack everything up go to a warm climate and figure everything out there? no ofc not. you dont have a big brain. you have a very very tiny brain
Damn son
That lithium know how to burn
And why don't they treat the canopies with some sunglass film or something?
should be completely road legal
yeah some tint could block the sun ray better but its clear as a glass 😂
@@mohammadamir4486 Most places it is not legal to tint your front windshield. These solar cars are required to be street legal since they are on open public roads.
They should really give a little more airflow to the drivers. It's better to cost 1% in extra drag from more airflow going into the cockpit and finish the race, rather than not finish the race.
Freedom 41nall some have a full cockpit so maybe just the back half of the cockpit could be tinted
*They only need the tiniest hole within the very front of the canopy in order to help cool the drivers and to also help eliminate the drag effect from having a much **_larger_** hole! But, even the smallest hole would perform miracles for the poor drivers dying of dehydration!*
Gj on the videos! Just wish the other videos weren't premium
I think they will be made free once per week, but I agree that I would like them to be free
Do you say the same on movie trailers? They put effort, time and money into something and all you say is "but I want it for free".
How do you not realize how ungrateful and disrespectful that is?
There is a 1 month free trial for Premium!
I fly gliders. When waiting for the tow plane with a closed canopy it gets really really really hot. I know how that feels. 5min in this dead still hot air and intense heat can cut your flightperformance in half. Those cars are moving, still very intense!
There are similarities in aerodynamic and weight requirements. South African team NWU, which competed in 2017, based their car body on a JS3 Jonker Sailplane: engineering.nwu.ac.za/solarcar
That Stanford driver really seemed to treat the problem in an intelligent way. LOL
Wow that Stanford driver had nuts of steel to stay in the car for that long during a fire but also absolutely zero radio discipline 8:15
Now Im no Stanford student but you would think initial start up problems would warrent an inspection to see if anything is wrong. This still could have not stopped the battery problem but interesting how they wouldnt check to see if something was wrong initially.
They could have actually done a check but it was cut out in editing
"Wait this is a veritasium video?"
“Race the Sun” with Halle berry what a classic.

In Nascar, the cars have mandatory air tubes placed behind the driver's rear quarter window that are fed into their helmet as ventilation.
In Lemans and GT racing all cars must have an air duct 12 mm wide in the cabin going under the windshield to cool the driver

I think what makes the race is the charging times and the angle they put it at to charge the battery when at stops

This is epic
Hello Guys, when your car is getting heated up I suppose u could have an emergency shutter valve to exhaust excess heat once a critical temp inside the vehicle is reached. After exhausting u can close it so as not to effect aerodynamic properties. All the best for next design.
PTSD from a battery fire.
Should have had made an long video... I really liked this race.... thank you seeker...
Wouldn't something like a mylar reflective section above the driver on the canopy help keep the heat from getting in?
I would imagine the visibility is already poor due to the low profile windshield. So they probably can't afford to block any of it with mylar.
