Pikes Peak: Racing with NO RULES

  • What happens when you let engineers have completely free reign? No regulations, no power limits and whatever mad aero design they can come up with.
    Well, you get crazy-powerful, high-downforce - monsters.
This is exactly what they do in the Unlimited Division at Pikes Peak, where we get to see how they stack up against each other, as well as how it can go wrong.
Home-designed and made machines can compete against big-money international car companies to race to the top of the 14,000 foot mountain. A course with no run-off, no barriers, standard road-tarmac and 2000 foot drops.

The Unlimited Division is like nothing else in motorsport. Taking a look at the regulations, they say as long as you conform to the regular safety rules - you can do anything you like.
As much power as you want, any design and as much downforce as you can create. As long as you have a roll-cage, harnesses, helmets and other standard safety features - you’re good to go.
This leads to some extremely fast cars, and yet all of them are very different.
So what does it take to take the record at Pikes Peak? How quick is it possible to go with no rules?

It used to be held on the 4th of July and I worked at a local body shop, so when they would crash during practice you would be pulling all nighters to get as many as six cars ready to go by 3am the next day. There is a simple answer. Racing is much closer when the vehicles are all virtually the same. It is why some of the best drivers are discovered in a class like Karting, Barber Dodge, Sport 2000, etc. When the cars are closely matched then it is the skill of the driver that makes all of the difference. I personally prefer the two extremes of racing. Highly regulated, or virtually unregulated, except for safety (I don't like watching drivers die). Can Am, Class B Rally and Pike's Peak are great because the cars could be built to the extreme, and Barber Dodge was great because the only way to win was to be a more skilled driver.

Good point... Also, the Murray designed hypercar is not a fan car either, it uses fan to increase the performance of the diffuser. It is not directly sucking the car down. It is more elegant solution and it also makes the downforce curve more natural: it increases with speed and doesn't provide "too much" grip in the low speed corners. Fan cars are quite inconsistent, with almost static downforce that only gets worse with speed. Drivers do not like cars that don't slide at all, which is sort of counterintuitive but then again.. not so much. If it slides about the same way thru the whole range, it is easier to predict what is going to happen.
Adrian Newey's X-1 uses blown double diffuser, afaik. Good low speed cornering, amazing medium to high speed cornering, not a lot of drag.

Bit off topic but do you know if anyone has tried exotic fuels? Something like nitro that carries its own oxygen or a mono propellant like hydrazine. Insanely dangerous but would mitigate the lack of oxygen when the altitude increases.

I went to the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb 35 times. First time in 1972, 2nd through 35th started in 1980. Stopped going because of traffic in the morning after camping the night before stopped. It was better when it was gravel. I worked safety for about 10 years but decided to go back to being a spectator for the last 4 or 5 times. I really loved my time on Pikes Peak every year. Too bad you didn't have a chance to show all the different cars, trucks, and motorcycles that ran the race through the years. I towed Dallenbach's car at one of the CHCA races a couple years back. He said it was the fastest he had come down the road being towed. I said I figured you would hit the brakes if I was going too fast! I loved it! He would run at the CHCA races for practice and to make sure the car was ready.

i had a chance to go to the Pikes Peak Hill Climb when my in laws lived in Woodland Park Colorado, which is just up the road a bit. It was the coolest race since Bristol I have ever been to. Standing on the side of the cars going by at speed was just amazing. If you ever get a chance you need to go. If you driving the Colorado and cannot make race day come in a couple days early and watch qualifying and practice sessions, just as fun

Fascinating video. I've been a fan of "The richest race per mile" since the 1960's when the Unser family ruled supreme. In fact Pike's Peak was nick named "Unser's Mountain", such was their dominance! In those days to eclipse the 11 minute barrier was considered "Other Worldly." Your technical expertise and explanation is excellent. A like and subscription is well deserved. Keep up the great work.

Yup, but the record won't be beaten by another minute again... Maybe over the decades it gradually lower that much but the VW record is starting to reach the limits of physics of what a car can do. It also is starting to get too risky, i can only predict that the free class will be gone at some point. If there were no spectators and no money involved at all, you can take any risk you want but the moment it is organized event.. deaths can't happen too often.
