I agree with tokai, the rule is unfair. Rolling over is NOT a common problem to all cars. If they have a more stable design they should go faster than 80kph.
Ah, and there my crosswind question is answered. Lovely stuff.
Hey there friend, I expected to see you here 😊
Oh my goodness I literally love you
It's called science
The answer to the problem can be found in hydroplane race boats. An unlimited class hydroplane race boat is insanely fast but terrible at corners. To compensate for this issue there is a variable pitch airfoil mounted on the front of the boat. On the straits, the airfoil is kept flat and provides no downforce. When cornering the angle of the airfoil is changed to give just enough downforce to keep the boat level. The tighter the corner the more downforce can be applied. I don't know if this technique is allowed but if it is, then you have a simple solution to the problem.
@Skip Daulton it's literally out of hand 😸

So much respect for the german team for fixing up that car and finishing the race anyway
This episode was crazy. I almost screamed when Twente lost the lead and crashed. It was sad how it cost everything for them. On the other hand sonnenwagen handled the situation incredibly and the fact that they managed to at least stay in the race was awesome. I was pretty okay with Agoria filing the protest for the speed thing since I felt like the limit would lower the competitiveness plus Tokai and Agoria's car was designed so well for it. The last one felt a bit excessive though, it was only 7 minutes and they just wanted to stop the car from rolling away and didn't technically touch the car
Filing that protest was undignified.
It was pretty sad
Holy moly, that repair by Sonnenwagen was absolutely incredible.
So unfair that they got so much less coverage on the series than the other teams!
HOW DOES MICHIGAN DOESNT GET A BIG PENALTY FOR BEING AN AWFUL SPORT???????
Someone said they got a one hour penalty.
@Robin da Silva Their support car prevented the other team from passing them, speeding up when they had a chance to pass, and slowing way down when they weren't.

The Japanese team is smart. Crabbing into the wind is dangerous. Yet sometimes mother nature is is just to strong.
Crabbing is like sailing. I find this a very smart solution.
I wonder how fast the crabbing reacts, if the wind was just to be a gust, could it counter it and reset without overcorrecting...
@@ylerta1 From what I've heard (from people who talked to the agoria team themselves) is that the two rear wheels were fixed at a specific angle, and then the front wheels steered normally. You'd be able to correct just as if you were driving sans-crabbing
I am honest here, I want Michigan to flip the car in the wind, but let the driver be safe!
As someone who watches motorsports, the officiating for this race is a complete disaster.
They're a bunch of science department administrators, perhaps even volunteer. Gonna need someone from classic rallying or LeMans who know what they're doing.
What they did is super legal in racing

Bro, that is only logical. They have all spend so many hours, so many weeks in their cars. The competitors are the same as them. Students with a goal to brighten the future and put them on their spot in this race.

Stanford represented the 🇺🇸 honorably. They were the only US team in the show worth mentioning.
Michigan should have received a 2 year ban for their cheating team of losers (ok, i see you're point about "murica". But it's only 30% losers, by volume 😉)
It's the super narrow designs. With a wider wheel base they wouldn't be so tip happy. I'm no engineer just a hard core gearhead and drag racer. I'm glad everyone is okay in their accidents. Maybe some aero ducs on the front and rear side would allow for excess air to escape a side draft. Like a viper. This is a really cool show!
Guys I was wondering for a long time why did Agoria wn the WSC2019 so easily but, this video cleared every blunder in my mind and proved that Agoria deserves it.
Watching this docu-series is like watching Netflix's "Drive to Survive". So intense! All the technology and the atmosphere of the race is so great!
What a great series! This episode in particular was hard to watch, those teams that lost everything. What a crazy race
It's so disheartening that so much intense effort is put into making such nature friendly cars, and it's affecting even a treacherous race. Feeling terribly sad that future car efforts also seems heading the same way, poof into the winds. Hats off to these amazing engineers who are putting everything to atleast give humanity a chance to repair the damage we've done by exploiting our natural resources. Hope this technology turns into a reality.

YAY! Even less mention of Michigan in this episode! Hate those guys! (by the way, I'm an American)
The fact their was no mention of Michigan getting a penalty for their behavior is annoying
Oooo. Wind brake emergency panels. This been done for years in the Nascar circuit for this reason. Keeps the cars from flipping when they are spun out. Emergency drag spoilers could open, stabilize the car, then close back into place.
I did not anticipate getting so hooked on this show...
Wow this is a well produced documentary series, very exciting and interesting to watch.
I think it's clear that the organisers of this race are making it more dangerous for its contenders,
Seeing a team penalised for an emergency action which if not quickly taken care of could result in the car hitting someone even though the team did not work on or touch the car is not on.
I also think the cars should require 2 drivers be onboard and some form of occupant cooling system.
The car's are really to light for these roads and conditions.
That’s why it’s a challenge, and they signed waivers they know the danger, but the penalty was bullshit
Luckily there wasn’t a battery fire when it was upside down
Imagine if the shape of the car can change and resemble a sail on a sailboat that create foward lift on a cross wind situation.
Crabbing into the wind is a brilliant move because it lets the car SAIL in cross-winds. I.e. the faster the cross wind, the faster Agoria goes! Expect rule changes next year, or universal adoption of crabbing.
Not only Agoria had a Crabbing System. Also Top Dutch, Kogakuin and Sonnenwagen. Unfortunately rear wheel steering is forbidden in 2021.
I'm surprised they aren't using some kind of adjustable wing to get that extra downforce when its needed
Extra drag and the engines from solar cells are probably not strong enough to utilise the extra down force for more speed
A wing would do almost nothing at the speeds they're driving at. It would slow them down more than anything.
The wings like in the formula cars are great because the drag it create is counteract by their strong engine. While the solar car needs to be aerodynamic as much as possible because it has a weaker engine.
Wouldn’t be suprised the next Agoria car will have an adjustable wing.
Downforce increases drag which reduces the efficiency enough to make a big impact overall. It was addressed in the first episode

This shouldn't be a premium series, it highlights the issues with our climate and the need for technological innovation to combat climate change, series like this do a lot for raising awareness
Repeating that something exists, over and over, is not the same as highlighting issues. This show didn't highlight any climate change issues.
Damn proud of my german team!

I love this. Thank you. Great job.
alternatively 2 kg more and a microcontroller-controlled tail fin... nowadays you can get lateral acceleration sensors at every junkyard
The drivers should remember to slow down and not accelerate when passing a Road Train in high winds.
Came to the comments for this. Back to vid
@@ItGetsOrganized I think in general its the road trains passing the cars. accelerating vs slowing down doesn't make as large a difference compared to the side forces. I know for sure that several of the teams do put considerable thought into making their cars dynamically stable with respect to crosswinds like those from roadtrains.
This thing has more crashes than NASCAR! Stay safe, all you team drivers👍
The cars are also more solid than Nascars
I hope that next year the race controllers do something about the wind (1) introduce minimum weight requirements (2) minimum required downforce (3)active aerodynamics and/or (4)postpone the race on windy days &hours. That was scary to watch!
they actually did add regulations for the 2021 race mandating that the cars had to be able to handle crosswinds. I know for sure that my team did take crosswind stability into account when designing their car / suspension mechanics but I'm glad that this will be given more attention in the future

So, we got to see the American tram get no penalties for unethical unsportsmanlike actions, but when a team puts rocks to prevent their car from blowing with the wind, oh they need to be penalised. And yes, speed limits for safety were ill conceived when some teams have prepared for the dangers and others took risks with their catamaran designs.

ประเทศไทยน่าจะทำรถเข้าแข่งแบบนี้รายการนี้บ้างนะครับ..ช่างไทยเราเก่งอยู่แล้ว👍👍
I don't completely understand why the speed limit was added. I get the safety concern, but don't ask people to design for a set of circumstances and then not reward folks for successfully doing exactly that. As for Michigan, I don't think they deserve an invite to the next race. If you care about safety and sportspersonship, you don't risk other teams by exposing them to such behavior.

Motorsport is dangerous. What do you expect?
@@subasurf come on! It is clear the chance they get out of their lane because of the wind is way higher than that of a normal car! now i know, stackoverflow is a duct tape for software enginner.
I'm thinking regulators oughta up the required weight on those things. Maybe allow teams to make up for it by adding more batteries or something
Yeah, honestly I wish they removed all battery requirements and allowed teams to drive during night. Would cause teams to strategize how much energy to save for night driving.
@@The_Pixel_Goat You actually can't drive at night in most of Australia, especially the Outback, since at night tons of kangaroos lay on the road to absorb its heat. That's why any trucks that drive at night have huge steel bars in front to protect them from the inevitable collision with several kangaroos on their journey. Also the battery regulations are probably to drive innovation, especially considering that at some point you can just have a huge battery and barely have to recharge. It would also probablt slow the race down a ton because of the massive loss in power gained at night.
