It would have been so much easier if manufacturers included all dimensions on their websites
Remember there are side mounted cable droppers so you never have to use a no-cable dropper if don't want to. Side mounted, as long as the housing fits into the top tube, can be used with any bike no matter how old. Two popular side-mounted types are PNW and Trans-X.
I got lucky on my Vitus, I was running a 125mm dropper and must of measured 10 times before buying a 170mm.. The dropper collar sits on the seat clamp and gives me the perfect pedal stroke(Vitus size Large/ 185cm tall/ 32inch inside leg) Happy days! ..Great video guys.
Anna, you are doing such a great job!
PSA: There are externally routed droppers that actuate from the collar as opposed to the top of the seat clamp. The advantage on these is there is no cable movement needed when dropping. I have the PNW.
Have the Ascend Brand X external on my hardtail , works fine and can be easily manually adjusted if problems occur on the trail .
Nice video, it is super tricky figuring out how big a dropper you can run. Stack height, insertion depth, total length, drop length all need to be accurately measured. I'm a big fan of the one up dropper, shortest stack height on the market and every post can be shimmed down by 20mm in 10mm increments.
You also have some external routed cables. Before putting some axs on a frame with no internal solution...
There are set screw Style ferrules that can help you if your lever and dropper both require a ferrule on the cable. Also worth mentioning depending on the cable routing your max insertion might be determined by the bend in the cable. My Stumpjumper post will physically go much deeper than the cable will allow it to.
quality information it will keep me from a regret buy I'm sure I would have bought a product not suited for my bike thanks anna
Glad we could help! Thanks for the support, Mike!
All good information Anna….everything you need to know
Thanks, Barry! We're glad you found it useful! 👍
Great video! I’ve gotten away with using a shimmed 27.2mm dropper in a 31.6mm frame to bypass the bottle bosses and get the maximum insert depth possible.
I'm looking for a 27.2 dropper too, i'm interested on what dropper you got?
@@aponinenaugcasio8456 I’m running a Thompson Dropper right now. I liked the fact I can put a under seat dropper paddle on it to drop the post instead of the bar mounted lever, let’s me swap it from bike to bike easily.
I'm about to add a 180mm v2 to my Ragley Big AL. I am 5'11" with a 31" inseam(I have that gorilla torso lol) My 88.5 cm seat height will land the 180 perfectly flush by all my calculations. I wish the US would just go metric like the rest of the world, screw the fraction BS. But yeah the low stack height of these newer droppers make it possible for me to go 180mm flush and be within 3mm of my pedal to seat height measurement. I have a 100mm DNM old school external cable on it now and it is crazy how much they have upped the game since then. It will return to my old bike soon.
Nice video. I would have thought that when getting a new dropper post that the remote lever would be a given, how would you use it without one.
Handlebars are very personal, the different remotes reflect that. Better to only get what you need.
Thanks my lady 💪❤️💪
DO YOU SUGGEST DRILLING A HOLE FOR THE CABLE ON THE BIKE TUBE BOTTOM FOR THE CABLE TO COME OUT?
This cleared up all the questions I had on this topic.
Perfect! We're glad you found this useful, Jordan!
Great vid, Anna!
When I added a dropper post to my hardtail, the best thing I did was upgrade the lever.👍
That's a great idea! Thanks for the support! 👍
i dont get it.. im 5'10 and on my scott spark I could only manage a 125mm drop with the post all the way down to the collar otherwise it was too tall for me.
what am i missing?
I got a one Up 210 dropper in Specialized Enduro. The problem by fully or even nearly put the dropper in to the clamp. The Seatpost clamp seams to clamp the bushing in the dropper and ist doesnt work to come out. If i try to losen the seatpost clamp Till ist works fine, the post itself moves into tge frame.. has anyone ideas or any fix for this issue?
Sry or my english.
Thanks
I’ve got a 1992 Kona Lava Dome with a 26.4mm seat tube.
Can I get away with a sand/lathe of a 27.2mm dropper post to make it fit or is there another solution? (And why won’t manufacturers just make ones smaller than 27.2?!)
How do you shim the dropper down?
An emtb motor may limit dropper insertion. You may not see this limit from the outside. Insertion depth may also be limited by the minimum bend radius of the internally routed cable. All that said, a Oneup 150 mm dropper fit in my size small 2019 Turbo Levo carbon. Spesh said the max was 125.
This frame size inche??
Or if you don't have a hole you can get a external cable dropper
Can anyone suggest a brand that has the shortest insertion depth?
One up
or an externaly routed dropper
they do exist
I like 120-150 around there is comfy for a med
Thx bud
Is there an argument to not have the maximum amount of drop? Can you ever have too much drop?? I can easily fit 200mm, but is 175mm enough and 200mm too much?
A lot of frames don't necessarily accomodate the full drop posts, since the post is quite long! you do have to do a bit of measuring etc
@@gmbntech thank-you for the response. But, my question is (assuming 200mm dropper fits frame insertion, saddle stack height, etc..) is there any reason to run a lower drop?
My friend put this bike together for his son and before I knew it he was done czcams.com/users/postUgkxHL1v1R3NE5x4KiYfyt8dnQmyNYz7qi5L When the son came to put it together he was surprised to see it was already done. All he had to do was take the bike to get air and be on his way. My friend did not have any major problems putting this bike together; small issue was putting one of the brakes on straight; however when the son got home he was able to fix it. The bike rides well gears move correctly; good bike for the price. Wrote review after the son took the bike. Sorry.
0:57 Anyone else who thinks the stack height definition and graph is completely wrong? ;-(
Nukeproof is English brand 🤔
Big up from the Irish holidaying in Turkey and doing all the down hill trails not for the faint hearted.. 😃
Love that Yellow de so Much
Us too! The Nukeproof Scout looks soooo good in yellow! 🔥
My girlfriend left me cause my dropper the wrong size.
why does it seem complicated to measure this that for a dropper lol....

Makes no sense
About week too late.
Hopefully you've got the right size dropper now! 😬
@@gmbntech yeah, I did get the right size from PNW Components. They have all the needed dimensions and a handy calulator on their page.
Describing picking a dropper post as a minefield is a huge stretch. There’s a couple of measurements you need and that’s it. Easy peesy. Numbers are clear as day not a minefield 🤦♂️
The way you calculate the travel length seems both convoluted and potentially inaccurate. Just set a regular seat post to the desired extended length and measure from the seat collar to the center of the seat rails. That usually corresponds to a length on the size chart (crankbrothers calls it minimum extended length for example). And you kinda just completely ignored externally routed dropper posts for frames that don't have internal routing even though you literally showed an older one later in the video.
Luckily mine came with dropper post already installed :) Didn't had to worry much about it
Nice! That's good! It's quite easy to forget about servicing dropper posts so make sure to keep an eye on it! 👍
@@gmbntech yea, already forgot :D But I'll do IT after this season ends
