I love watching generational talent. Over the next few short years it will come to a close. Who knows how long we will have to wait to see such heroics! 👍🏻🚴🏻♂️👍🏻
My 2 observations:
Trek needed Stuyven
Gianni Vermeersch could have been on the podium if he raced his own race - he had a crazy great day
This is the 3rd time as far as I’m aware that vermeerch has been a beast at roubaix so we should expect it from him now
I don't even know if they would have needed Stuyven today (he obviously would have helped a lot). A set of brains functioning well enough not to close down moves for Alpecin would at least have helped.
When your domestics are better than your competition...
No word on Soudal Quickstep? Another shocker, Lampaert at 36th was their best of only 3 finishers
Lefevre choose to get 4th or 5th in the tour is more important.
MVDP going solo in white and rainbows through the grit and grime of Roubaix embodies the beauty of cycling. Deep, deep romantics in the sport can appreciate this.
Huge respect for MvDP and the Alpecin team for the success that they are having, however, from a spectator standpoint, not a great race to watch. The only thing that kept me watching all the way to the end was that I was too lazy to go out and start my own workout because the weather is poor.
The fact the commentators sounded less interested after van der Poel's attack than before, said it all.
It was a really good race. If in the roubaix u turn on tv last 50km its your own problem... I have no more words about the greatness of MVDP
This🙌
When you see what Alpecin do with their budget, I find it amazing more of the mid and lower budget teams don't focus their resources to win specific races and stages. Ineos for example are still using their budget like they did when they dominated Grand Tours, even though those days now seem a very long time ago.
You have to find a special talent willing to commit to your team and that target though. Other than a WVA, I couldn't think of another rider like MVDP that you could build around like that. A rider of Phillipe Gilbert's profile would be perfect as well, but currently there's really noone like him that doesn't also go for GCs.
@@michiadams While that is true, you have to keep in mind the other riders in Alpecin still outperform Ineos. Guys like Groves, Laurence, Hermans still rake in wins (and I didn't even name a bunch of other riders that won smaller races) while Ineos is struggling. The domestiques like Vermeersch, Kragh Andersen are also insanely strong. Capable of riding good results themselves. There are thing going wrong at Ineos, I can guarantee it.
@@michiadams True but there are plenty of teams who could build a team around a top sprinter, but few who actually commit to that strategy like HTC did back in the day.
@@colinlittlewood9613 You have a point there, if there was a team that commited themselves fully to someone like Merlier right now or maybe Kooij in the near future, that could also work well. I feel like that strategy is on the come up though, Lotto is certainly 100% commited to De Lie, and it feels to me like it's only a matter of time until Tudor get their hands on a top sprinter.
@@Tibovl to me that feels like an Ineos problem though, they aim too high instead of settling for more realistic goals with their good riders. Pidcock for example could easily win a stage in every Tour he does, but at least in my memory he only had that one chance to get in the break, where he won on Alpe d'huez.
Man after this race I have to say that we are blessed to have riders like pogacar and van aert compiting with mvdp, beacause otherwise I think nearly all classics would look like this. after the attack you just could turn off your prefered streaming device. No words needed.
Nearly all one day races do look like this at the moment
Thank you guys podcast way more exciting than the race haha
Thanks for getting off the beaten path and having fun discussions. That’s good sports radio.
I’m so happy that this podcast exists. This is one of my favorite races to watch every year too. I knew the result before the race happened but double rainbow had to happen.
Tempo tempo is harder than tempo is funny.
Tempissimo!
I miss when you could just tape it on vhs, and speed watch it, though back then, they were doin effing 60 km/h as averadge oO peace great race, great take.
I love MvdP, I ride a Canyon in part because of him (and Nairoman) and I believe he's a good dude. But damn does it seem like Alpecin has paid the peloton to forego on tactics.
Really, really thrilling race up until MvdP went solo, actually. Then, not so much, but still massive respect to him. We are witnessing one of the greats
I wanna shout out reesabeek because he was an absolute beast today
Veel biergooiers hier. Ik ben wel fan. MvdP topper
I stopped watching when I saw 4 Alpecins + MvDP at the front of a 25ppl group. It was totally inevitable from that point.
Poggy do Roubaix!!
Yes! Pidcock did not look too bad and Pogi is 8kg more. I bet he could follow MvdP.
@@chrisridesbicycleshe could follow a little bit but not that much I think. He needs to gain weight
@@mathieuvanderpoel4007 The best comparison (as listed on PCS) would be Gianni Vermeersch who is 2kg more than Pogi and finished 6th despite working for MvdP. And I think we agree that Pogi is a different beast. At least podium is very possible.
@@chrisridesbicycles of course it is possible. But Pog also it himself. W'll see
MVDP seems like he enjoys going “tempo-tempo-tempo” which is faster than tempo AND “tempo-tempo” (Benji @15:37) 😂 I’m going to add the “tempo-tempo” level to my training program today…
No mention of Cancellara classics palmares?
I'm with Benji, I was expecting a boring race but I still watched the whole thing because it's Roubaix. I was hoping MVDP would puncture or something though for a bit more excitement
The dominance of Mathieu Van der Pool is a sign that we should take up Swimming
it was almost unbelievable......unbelieveable........
It was "unbelievable". I've been a huge advocate for this generation of cyclist but this is another reason to question them.
The lack of competition (vs. VDP and Alpecin) was obvious in this race. Too bad.
Basically cycling at the minute is just 4 guys mvp wout pogi and jonas and if they turn up on form they just win
I think you can't put Wout in this very short list
got some bad news about how many big wins WVA has in the last 2 years: 0
Remco has more right to be on that list than WVA
@@00100Matt and yet, every riders are riding so defensively against WVA like he is the huge favourite, but everyone pulls for MVDP like he was a normal rider. I really don't get that. Why did all the team helped him today ? And puts everything on Wout's shoulder every race he's in...
@@endautrestermes I think the dynamic you describe is wrong... the point of view of a WVA fan... MVDP and Alpecin-D crushed the competition today. Borderline crazy to think if his opponents would have raced more negatively the result would be different... or someobody else "deserved" to win. Overall, I think the opposite is more true. MVDP more likely to be isolated/alone, WVA has more help over the course of their careers.
Tempo Tempo 😂
I saw from km 0 to 200, turned off when MVDP had a 1.30 gap. Great payday for Uno-X though.
Cancellara said after RVV that he welcomes MVDP in that list and thinks that MVDP is the one who will break the record and put it to 4 or even 5. Also all you crybabys, yes it was boring but still so fun to watch him showing his CX skills every corner
No one's complaining it was a boring race. The strongest won, no one will remember the type of race after 10 years people only remember the winner. But I think people are just frustrated cause they think this was not 100 percent deserved, at least if Wout did not crash and then Mvdp beat him no one would have complained. At least I think this was a free RVV and PR. I predicted Mvdp would win both RVV and PR the day Wout crashed and everyone was coping that it will be hard for him cause they at least wanted a good race. Its just 2 monuments gone and I dont remember anything major from both. Lost opportunities cause everyone wants monuments to be the best races of the year and they normally are. Now we gotta wait till World Champs
@@saksham5829 You had the crazy koppenberg, fastest Pr ever, longest solo ever I think and also biggest time margin since 20 yrs or so. If thats not sth to remember about idk mate
@@Lion-wd1px a win is a win, everyone will remember that Mvdp won the crash marred Paris Roubaix and soloed to victory cause no one could challenge him. Well he's the world champ for no reason cause he is the 'best' rider in the world with a bonus of all his competitors crashing out 2 weeks before. Im just saying I wanted to see Mvdp beat EVERYONE fair and square. I already knew before the race he would cause he was by far the best, so it doesn't matter how. However the circumstances against today's field he would have made it happen. Just remember like Pedersen beat him 2 weeks before. Personally I think his chances would have been much lower with Wout Stuyven and Pederson in healthy conditions
@@saksham5829 if if if. I will still remember this amazing solo, historical solo as much as I remember Pogs Strade 22 and 24 solos and even Froomes 2018. Its on the same level as Contadors Giro 2015 I think stage 16 ride Mortirolo and MVDPs champs 23. Just enjoy and be a fan of the sport
M8, you rarely get ALL favorites coming to a race, so for me at least its not about „deserved“ or not.
What it is about, is that I have been incredibly spoiled last year(s) and obviously miss the epic battles between MVDP and ppl like WVA, Pogi in RVV was so epic, and so on.
He‘s a beast, no question about it. I just love to not be right when I predict a winner 80k from the finish :)
Why the actual fook anyone would work for Alpecin (looking at you, Trek) is beyond me. Stupid, stupid, stupid move that completely sealed the race. Props to Robert Bengsch (German Eurosport) for calling it out (as "gutsy" 😂) immediately.
If LR ever wants to watch a Tom Boonen race then watch the first time he won RvV.
I mostly agree with your take on jealousy of the older generations, but you really did Boonen dirty... He's stated multiple times in the past that records are there to be broken, and that he really likes/respects the current generation of cycling.
The statement you are referring to clearly refers to pure victories, not monuments/classics. Not difficult if you compare the 40 race days of Boonen vs the 5 of VdP. AND it was just a statement of a change that occurred, not a criticism. Thought you guys would know not to just read the sensational titles... 😉
Good one, especially considering it was a race that was wrapped up 60k from the finish. To bring my 2 cents to the rant about the oldheads : first of, it pisses me off as well; secondly I think that it tells a lot about the psychology of some of the champions.
I think many of them are, their entire lives, trying to compensate for something, or fill some sort of hole in themselves that doesn't go away no matter how much they win. I think that it's a big factor behind the insatiable drive to win they have. The problem is, for some, once the show stops, they are deprived of that and don't know what to do with it. So they get bitter and franckly, I pity the relatives of these people because it must be tough being the wife or the child of a guy like that. Cristiano Ronaldo is a good example imo. Fortunately not all are like that.
Wright 12th and Pidcock 17th isn't too bad for the Brits.
I think it's generous to give MVDP another 5 monuments. A lot could happen that means he doesn't reach Boonen
Boonen didn’t win MSR.
MVDP= MJ.
No body remembers tdf stage wins. Deep deep fans might. But who one stage 14 2 years ago?? NObody knows. Who won PR in 17? GVA.
It’s 8-1
Big hype, boring race again. I don‘t know how they do it but Alpecin seems to have no bad luck at all. They must be leading by a big margin in who has the least punctures and crashes statistics. Has MvdP ever punctured in a monument?
All these guys complaining about the race should go watch the Savannah Bananas or children's cartoons... embarce being a baby, it's fine!
Only a Tour de France GC win equals a monument. Stage wins are overrated.
It was a team effort more than anything... MvdP sat on the wheel of the team in 10-15k before attacking meanwhile the team covered every attack which made the speed drop in peloton as MvdP went all out in 20-30k... Pedersen didn't have any help the last many k's and the other teams rode like amateurs...
Yeah, I guess excellence is boring.
Didn’t think a boring Paris roubaix existed but mvp is just different
by far the best of the world! with or without everyone no one would beat this absolute monster
You went so far off topic, there was no internet connection anymore 😂
Awe man. You guys are doing what flobike does and putting spoilers in the title. This makes me sad 😢
VDP already passed Sagan in my opinion. No one cares about the green jersey.
Lol, we really live in this roman era, bread and games, everything has to be exciting, everyone must be entertained, it' s sport, this edition, one team was superior.but these days its called boring lol..just watch some exciting crap on one of your streaming services.much better
Can Anyone Stop Mathieu Van Der Poel? I guess that all depends who’s racing. Today was a foregone conclusion. Very disappointing for fans.
Alpecin, UAE and Visma...rinse & repeat...#WhoCares?
I am still of the opinion that these races are become boring to watch I may have to start watching the lesser races for some actual racing
I could stop him, but I would have to identify as a male to be able to race, and that's just too much hassle!
Turned on telly, Mvdp was ahead 43 secs, 47km to go. I turned off TV. This must be awesome achievement but anyone says this is good for cycling is stupid lol.
absolutely agree !
Only noobs watch the last 50k of Roubaix tho
So when Eddy Merckx was doing this everyone was complaining how bad it was for cycling? How can you complain with these talents in cycling g right now?
Turning the TV at 47km to the end, in Paris-Roubaix is the only stupid thing here
@@mariusilerd9581 call me a noob, at least I start doing housework for the last 50k.
The relegation was deserved
Last year Wout was not even on his best form and he still would have won if not for the puncture. Hot Take and too late for this but Wout was looking better than Mvdp, I just did not want to jinx it
What a load of bs, wva didn’t win last year, to say he wouldve without the flat tire is just cheap bs. We saw in e3 who was the better of the 2
I don't want make excuses but Wout crashed, chased 3 groups, dropped all them, then came within ten seconds. As well as Pedersen just stumped Mvdp just 2 weeks before. Both of them crashed and everyone already knew Mvdp is winning both RVV and Roubaix on the day of Dwaars door with no one to challenge him
Absolutely delusional take 😂
@@saksham5829 came within 10 seconds but finished on 2 minutes
Have you seen MDVP in Cyclocross? I'd say Wout in better in terms of being an all-rounder but MDVP is way better than Wout atm even if we take away the fact he is injured.
The most boring edition of Paris-Roubaix ever !! Not worth being watched --- it was clear who would win --- unless a crash would prevent it !
cry cry cry
Flipped it off at 50ks...this sport is now F1
@Lion-wd1px are you a VDP family member? U liked watching that?
Just enjoy greatness
@@craigpavia8943 I enjoy cycling. Its on the same level as Pogs strade 22,24 froomes crazy giro 2018 solo and Contadors 2015 giro stage 16 mortirolo I think. Just be a fan enjoy and acknowledge instead of hating you poor souls
doping
Benji you said a lot of times "I gotta be honest, to be honest, I'll be honest, let's be honest, etc." I know you're not a native speaker and your English is great but after I noticed it once I found it quite annoying. Other than that, loved the podcast. Thanks as always for the summary and analysis!
Congrats to MVDP. Most boring PR ever but that's not his fault of course. Alpecin masterclass.
Man I love PR. race of the season for me. This edition was boring 🥲
No drama. Not enough big dogs. MVDP tempo training ride.
Hats off to Alpecin tho they absolutely dominated that race.
