    Alpecin wasn't even a World Tour team a few years ago and now they're dominating the classics. Special call-out for Gianni Vermeersch who was instrumental in controlling the race for Alpecin and still finished 6th.

      indeed - a few years ago Quickstep was dominating the spring classics - now their best rider finished 36th at 7:16 from the winner (and 18th at Flanders at 2:02). To be honest, it is rather painful to see.

      MVDP is at another level. Apart from his unparalleled power there's also his bike handling skills: what's a few cobble stretches and grassy verges when you've been cleaning up in cyclocross all spring? Then, there's team Alpecin. I confess when MVDP rode away with 60 KM to go I went out for a ride. The outcome was virtually assured; there wasn't going to be sprint in velodrome like there was with the Paris-Roubaix femmes.

    The way Alpecin smothered the race was super impressive. Once MDVP had flown the coop, those two covering moves was the icing on the cake. In a slightly lol maybe mocking moment, one of the VLaB riders went on the attack, and no Alpecin riders decided to cover. The VLaB rider barely made it 200m before almost giving up. I guess everyone knew he was cooked.

    Chris, when you described riding at your redline at the back - squinting, suffering, riding on the rivet and not being able to see - that reminds me of my Saturday group rides. I'm riding at the back and suffering like a pig. Luckily, I haven't flatted or crashed - but this is a real possibility as I rarely look up - as all I see is the back wheel in front of me - and all I'm thinking about is don't get dropped by that back wheel. It gives me some satisfaction that even the ProTour guys go into this state also.

    MvdP did it in Vlaanderen and he did it in E3 and in E3 he did not have the wind with him in Flanders neither. It all does not matter. He wins routinely lately with minutes to spare. Regardless of his team (see Scotland), regardless of circumstances. That is what makes him so special.

    Deceuninck's sponsorship switch from Quick Step to Alpecin has to be one of the greatest sponsorship changes in history. Quick Step's ages of dominance has evaporated aside from Remco and Alpecin has the best 1-2 punch in one day races.

      Yes, I saw that that too, at 42.2km to go. Crazy stuff.
      As far as the race, I think something weird is going on with VDP's Team as VDP is on rocket fuel and Philipsen was nose breathing most of his way around the race. His Team were duffing up the race prior. I don't mind good riders but it's when it looks a bit too much and record speeds going on, it's all a bit sad to watch. I think and don't know but it's been common knowledge the UCI get involved with some of the shady sides of cycling and it always looks bad. I wish the UCI wouldn't get involved. We've had Jumbo, Sky and USPS and it's all a bit shady and looks terrible.

    In all the Belgian and Dutch previews Jasper Philipsen had certainly been tipped as a four star (out of five) rider. Not only does he have the engine and stamina for P-R, he was also part of the team strategy: if Mathieu couldn't make it, they had Philipsen as a backup. In the end things went perfectly for Alpecin. Pedersen said in a post race interview that he was good, but that Mathieu was leagues ahead of the rest.

    One think I like about MVDP is that he rides a frame appropriate for his height. I am not sure if this is because of the CX school but it looks good. I remember the years when riders were using frames two size smaller for their heights. Is this the new normal?

      You are correct that a correct size frame is essential for top performance, not just looks 😉. It is definitely not new tho, bike frames for pro's have been tailormade for many years. You only see riders on wrong size bikes when they had to change during a race and they got the wrong replacement bike for whatever reason.

    • @chadbarbaro
      @chadbarbaro Před měsícem

    • @chadbarbaro

    And as for the race the luck that MVDP has is unbelievable when it comes to never having flats or mechanicals. He dystroyed the field. I think it makes a difference when he has computation. Congratulations to MVDP. I like the rain races it levels the field. And his teams tactics were spot on. It was magic to see the 3 riders control the race. Physically MVdP's helpers were up to the challenge, but what if they got a flat, or had a small crash??? Then at least there is a chance that the chasers can put pressure on MVdP. The greatest teams and sports people in history apply pressure to force mistakes. Without pressure, its just a race for minor places and this is quite disappointing.

The computer know exactly how many miles on what wattage you can do without exploding. And not only is info available for there topriders but also for the domestics. As the sport director of Alpacine explained. The give the domestics the same program as MvP. That is the reason they were less at the start of the season because the all peaked at this moment

This break was caught with about 140K to go and never got more than around 2 minutes. That's why the average speed was so high. They were racing full out the entire race.

    Quickstep are just not a factor anymore, their riders were their but are just not good enough, so no need to mention them. Alpecin replaced them. Trek yes could have been a bit better, but the only significant difference would have been a fully fit Visma blowing things up. But even then, let’s not forget that Trek was complete and Wout was there at E3, and then it was a 43km solo.
    Also, all or almost all of the long solos of Pogi, Wout, MVDP, Remco and Pidcock were facilitated by not all of the best rivals or teams being there. Just think of Pogi twice at Strade and Remco twice at LBL. Those fields were relatively even weaker, but people were raving about those.
