Fun Fact about this game: There’s a secret character relation system that factors into when your Tag Partner will get their rage based on their relationship in the story.
If they like each other, the background partner gets rage when you take 50%-40% damage, and if they hate each other, their rage kicks in closer to end of your health.
My favorite example is Roger and Marduk because Marduk’s Australian meaning he apparently hates Kangaroos

Exactly. The customization, amount of combos and character interactions you can discover, being able to personalize music for the first time, couch co-op online matches, Combot. Tekken Tag 2 is probably my favorite Tekken game. A fun fact is that they had different covers for international releases of the game. For example, here in Brazil the game was sold with an Eddy + Christie (IIRC) cover with green and yellow colors.
They also took the time to get the people with the correct nationality to dub each character - something they kept on future games in the series. It was pretty cool to hear Eddy speaking in Brazilian Portuguese, for example.
I have a lot of fond memories of Tag 2 because me and a friend would just tag together and play through the Ghost battle mode or even the Survival mode while customizing our main characters and learning more and more about the game.

I believe one of the reasons why the series fell in popularity on Tekken 6 (which extended to Tag 2 as well) is the fact that, for the first time since Tekken 2, the game was no longer at the "bleeding edge" of its platforms in technical terms. This was a time when a lot of Japanese devs struggled to keep up with what the western devs were putting out graphically. Tekken 3 was one of the most impressive games on the PS1, Tag 1 as a launch title for the PS2 was incredible, Tekken 4 and 5 are among the prettiest PS2 games. And then Tekken 6 arrives and looks... antiquated. Long loading times, not that impressive graphics and resolution etc. It was still good looking for a fighting game, but overall felt antiquated, and many gamers were put off by that.

Hi Maximilian, I believe one of the main reasons Tekken Tag 2 had low sales is due to insufficient marketing. Back when I played Tekken, platforms like CZcams and the internet weren't readily available for us to discover new games. I was completely unaware of Tekken Tag 2 while playing Tekken 6. It wasn't until two years later that I learned about its existence, and that was only because some friends, playing in a different mall, informed us about Tekken Tag 2. My friends and I got into Tekken Revolution on PS3, but we hated the Free to Play mechanics, so we all bought TTT2, and we fell in love with it...we spent so much time learning our characters and customizing. It was our primary game for a couple years.
Tag 2 just had so much, the game modes, the roster, the customization.. so a few years later when Tekken 7 came out, I still enjoyed it, but I couldn't help but feel disappointed with the lack of content and the weak customization. I know Tekken 7 "saved" the series, but yeah.. I think starting out with Tag 2 spoiled me.

The mechanics, The unique tag throws, The character interactions, the fact that SEVERAL of the endings changed their art style to suit the character! In terms of Tekken as a piece of media I don't think any other game comes close. Everyone feels so wooden and plastic in Tekken 7. A lot of that personality is gone and it also just feels like the games are trying too hard to take themselves seriously now. Nothing silly like Alex or Mokujin or combot. But the original game was dynamic resolution to begin with on 360 and PS3 and that could drop hard in many places making the game very grainy and blurry. This is the Tekken game that I really committed to playing online and climb up the ranks. I had fun but man was it rough the amount of damage this game did was crazy.
People say T7 does damage lol. Eddy/Lars, Double BoB, the ninjas, Eddy/Christie. Some team combination can easily do 80% of your bar. Bruce/Eddy was a OP ass team. Bruce could toss launchers all day and Eddy’s b1 4 on CH straight up delete your life bar and a lot of his moves can be tagged out for red life damage.
This Tekken was for sure the sweatiest Tekken I’ve played. So many shit to worry about. KBD and Whiff punishing was a must in this game imo once you reach the upper ranks. Also throws were not nerfed yet to the generic throw system we got in T7. Let’s not forget the Tag mechanic and how to manage red life and safely tag your character out without getting blown up. So if you were a high ranked in this game you earned that shit.
With that said this game pretty much solidify my fundamentals for the franchise. It was a rough experience and I do remember waiting for T7 since the insanity was a bit too much lol. Looking back tho I do miss it. It was a great Tekken game despite all the mechanics and matchup knowledge you had to learn. I remember owning this game back when I had a workable PS3. And when I did, I remember absolutely sucking at this game. And it was mainly due to my lack of knowledge of how to play a Tekken game. Yes, I have played Tekken 3 many years prior, but that was years ago, and my memories were incredibly hazy. It also didn't help that, due to me constantly utilizing either button-mashing or spamming projectiles whenever I played other fighting games, and as a result, I struggled a lot.
In fact, the only time I was able to beat Unknown was when I used Ancient Ogre and True Ogre in a Tag Team. And even then, it was just barely, and it felt like pure luck.
I think another reason why I was struggling with Tag Tournament 2 was because of how I couldn't get into the mechanic of tag teaming and switching to my partner, and I think the as to reason why I was incapable of comprehending this was how the gameplay worked. If one of the members of the Tag Team gets KOed, you've automatically lost. It didn't matter if your partner had a full HP, the moment the other player got KOed, it would count as a lost. And for me personally, I hated this mechanic. Every time this happened, it always made me ask in a fit of rage, what was the point of having a partner? At least with every other fighting games that have a partner mechanic like the Marvel vs. Capcom games, Power Rangers Battle for the Grid, Skullgirls or Mortal Kombat 9, whenever you lost one of your teammates, you still kept going until either every team gets KOed, or the timer runs out. This was especially aggravating when confronting Unknown, as when I was about to win, she would combo one of my characters to death, resulting in me losing, even though I had another character who had full health and was eagered to fight.

I feel like for the passionate fanbase it wouldn't have- they would put it all on Capcom, as they should. But maybe casuals who weren't that knowledgeable, maybe they would put it on both names associated with the game?
But then again again- I don't know if that casual audience would even know of, or CARE about, SF x Tekken in the first place, if they saw it was 2.5D they might just stay away...

I played a lot of Tag 2 since its release and I thought it was the best in the series. The visuals, characters, even a bit of Snoop Dog as a cameo complete with a unique track was amazing.

Unfortunately the fact this game was essentially "more Tekken 6" is a major reason of why it failed, the same reason Tekken Tag didn't sell up to the standards of the previous games because it was generally "Tekken 3 on PS2".

I still think about how one day I just found out the game released out of nowhere and being given a poster of Tag 2 from a GameStop employee. I think I spent a good amount of hours just dedicated to the decal customizations in this game making random characters or outfits. I miss it a lot and is considered one of my favorite Tekken games ever

Watching this video made me realize that Harada was trying to make Tekken into Smash with this one. Like you mentioned, they crammed everything they could in this one, and this title is swimming with Easter eggs and references to earlier games that would fly by casual fans

@@UltimateBallaPOM The way I would answer this is the fanservice in Tag 1 was like the fanservice in Smash 64, the fanservice in Tag 2 is very much the same level as we started getting in Smash on Wii U, 3DS, and the Switch. Really went into overdrive

For me still the best Tekken game I've ever played and also the last actual Tekken game.
Everything after this became a street fighter-esque light show
Also TTT2 is NOT available for purchase in the store. The games isn't even available, only add ons. For some extremely stupid reason, they got rid of it.

For me it's T2 due to just how much time i put into it as a child along with super SF 2 turbo but this game was a close 2nd.
I loved this game and played it until T7 launched.
My only gripe is kaz lost his TT1 Solo status in favour of Jun\unknown.

This game is a love letter to Tekken lore fans. It has some of the best endings and all of them are pretty good length. As of now it’s the last game to have Team Battle, Survival, and Time Attack. The PS3 is the best in my opinion for the simple face that Tekken Tunes is not only the original Jukebox mode but this version you can put your own music that’s on your hard drive. And just like T7 it has all of the old movies so you can sort of get the reason why the characters are the way they are. All of the hidden Easter Eggs and old music. It was so much love put into this game and is still my favorite Tekken to date.

Tekken Tag 2 is definitely daunting to learn as a casual but does provide a ton of content and hours of combos, I can only imagine how much a Tekken Tag 3 would be like with all the new crazy moves and heat on top of the old bounds, tagging, rage drives, wall and floor breaks. We could be talking TOD's like dragon ball fighterz if they don't heavily nerf combos.

Man. Tag2 on Wii U was what got me really into Tekken and what's really special was that I got my brother into it who wasn't much of a fighting gamer to begin with. Just terrorizing the world with him as my duo partner warmed my heart and still warms my heart thinking about it. Sadly, we don't play much together anymore cuz life. Y'know how it is. I'm just wishing for a Tag3 someday so I can hopefully get my tag partner back. 🥺

Because Tekken 7 was budgeted like soul calibur 6 and this game alongside soul calibur 5 kind of set the precedence of potential failure for these two to have anyway

Tag 2 was fantastic, I unironically got back into tekken with revolution because it was free. Revolution made me buy tag 2 and that's when it all started for me. However these sales are as far as i know mostly on ps3. It was never sold on pc.
