This is an old comment, but the idea that Medusa was cursed to be a Gorgon doesn't gel with the fact she has two Gorgon sisters, unless they too were cursed, which is never mentioned in the myth where _she_ is. OSP actually addresses this in their Arachne video, pointing out that Medusa being cursed was an element that was added in a retelling by Ovid, who had major beef with authority and by extension the gods, so he was big on retelling stories to make the gods look _even_ _worse_ than they already did.

If you go by the idea that Poseidon raped Medusa, the idea that Athena turned her into a monster to bless her makes a tiny bit of sense. It's more the angle of "It might look like I'm punishing you (and I am), but I'm also making sure no one can ever hurt you like that again." But this is would make more sense if they went with the idea that Medusa could activate her stone gaze at will (which she is able to do in nearly EVERY modern adaptation).

Funny thing is this whole idea of Medusa being human but turned into a gorgon was entirely the creation of one author and that was Ovid, who had an intentional political reason to do it as he opposed authoritarianism due to his treatment by the Roman emperor Augustus. It was not how she was viewed by the contemporaneous Greek people she was originally written by. I have heard maybe once the idea that Medusa's curse was a blessing (albeit a hidden one). Now this was told from a very specific perspective that after medusa was raped, Athena cast the curse so no man could hurt her again.
Now unlike EC, this was not made out to be a "view based of the translated story". The person I heard this from made it out to be a view that could be used in a kind of a modernized retelling or fantasy book kind of deal. In which Athena "blesses" Medusa so she wouldn't be attacked by gods and mortals after she wishes to leave because of the trauma she went through.
It baffles me how EC could say that based off the original texts that it was a blessing, rape or no rape because that was not how the Greek gods worked at all.

I feel like they missed the fact that Dusa in the Hades Game, actually doesn't like any of the other Medusa headed enemies. According to her, their reputation for attacking everyone made it hard for her to get a job in the House of Hades. So she hates her "family" so to speak.
Tisiphone and Alecto are also banned from the House of Hades due to poor behavior. Alecto outright says she's always wanted to kill a god, and Tisiphone is fanatically single-minded, and has a one word vocabulary (two if you talk to her enough).
Zagreus asks if Dusa related to the other gorgon enemies, because he'd feel bad about murdering her relatives if it upset her. She says they're tangentially related to one another, and gives Zagreus full permission to slaughter them all.

The issue with classical myths is that they're retold and changed frequently through oral traditions and early modes of literacy. Some versions may depict Medusa as an irredeemable monster, but others changed the story to make Medusa more sympathetic. While the core elements of the story and characters are more or less the same, there isn't a definite version of the myth.
Hell, even people today tend to change classic fairytales and novels to reflect their interpretation of the stories. Disney firstly toned down stories to have less gore and a more happy ending, then they remade their own movies and recontextualized villains as sympathetic or heroic characters. Similarly, Chinese people remake classic wuxia adaptation almost every year, changing plot points or turning some villains sympathetic. With so many versions to read and watch nowadays, it more depends on which version you want to stick with.

Sure, Medusa might be a tragic character, but she did turn into a man-eating monster and needed to be put down, you know.

I studied the story of Medusa and apparently in Greek mythology Athena has taken a vowel of chastity she would never have a child willingly so it would make sense for priestess of Athena would not willingly have sex in the temple of Athena.

    • @yetanotherretroreview4476

Or she willingly had sex despite the consequences...which would seem punishable by a goddess who was raped by the god who had sex with the priestess...

SO after I watched your video I started to wonder about extra credits comment about making a connection to the characters of Greek mythology through video games & I remember him saying he played Hades.
So I looked up some videos on Medusa or just Dusa in the game. So she gets basically the same exact narrative happen to her in the context of losing her job & being kicked out that extra credits put on medusa in the story they told. My theory is extra credits played the game then learned about the Medusa & Persius myths then came up with his own sudo story. Which is characteristic of extra credits.
I haven't played Hades yet but I bet you can draw even more parallels between extra credits video & video games as if they are taking the games as a accurate representation of the myths.

Yeah I'm thinking extra credits is simping on Medusa after playing Hades.

Idk why extra credits is telling gods to leave mortal women alone. Sure they often suffer consequences after the fact but if Medusa is in the mood and Poseidon can make himself a dolphin dick tf is she gonna do say no? Let mortal women have their fun. Sure there are consequences aplenty but let people make mistakes.

I've heard it argued that the whole "turn people to stone" thing was meant to essentially make Medusa unrapeable, but I don't really know where they got that idea. If that was the case, why not give her control over the ability instead of affecting everyone? Why would you also make her hideous? As much as I like the idea of a hot Medusa with eye lasers that turn people to stone, it's not consistent with the myths.
