Extra Credits Doesn't Understand Othello (A Response Video)

- This might be one of the worst videos from Extra Credits since the Orc video or the Nazi video. Once again, EC has zero self awareness and decides to declare Iago (and by extention the audience) as racist without any evidence, and further, paints Othello and Elizabethian society and culture as racist, sexist, and bigotted. They lie about aspects of the play, overlook real world actors and theater customs, and, most ironically of all, commit the very sins that they are trying to condemn in this video: by peddling and pushing hatred and distrust.
This video is absolutely awful, and I will not pretend like it didn't anger me as someone who has studied and performed Shakespeare, and as someone with more than two brain cells to rub together.
I hope ya'll enjoy this video...but I knew it had to be made. - Hry
Wait until the Extra Credits goons find out that a Crime of Passion in the Italian legal system has a long tradition of being treated with leniency.
Don’t give them idea’s!
the double standards and idiocy Extra credits spew is astounding.
Yeah, their channel has been nothin' but cringe for a long time.
Are you surprised? They lost their mind ever since their main guy left
@@pifilixxiv3192even before that. Let’s not forget them defending loot boxes.
Raven, why do you do this to yourself? Self-harm like this isn't healthy. Why would you inflict Extra Credits upon yourself?
I believe it’s more about giving a true account of the story and give a full context of the story.
But that is my opinion.
@@razeplazma5978 Don't mistake my words, what he does is admirable. But Jesus Christ, EC causes me brain hemorhage
@@RoutaAskel True that, the stuff they talk about and how much they love shoving their ways of thinking into everything else, nearly had me get an aneurism.
perkele
Because masochism is a thing.
"There you are, sitting in a coffee shop woth Extra Credits when suddenly: Your a Racist.
You didn't ask for this; you didn't choose this; but suddenly, your a racist."
Great work my friend, good laugh
As a teacher whose done an entire unit on Othello for my 3 years of teaching so far, Extra Credits manages to represent this gripping and powerful story with the elegance and nuance of a brash and angsty child
Beautiful way of putting it.
I heard a good saying that fits Extra Credits perfectly: _People who are desperate to come off as intelligent are incapable of understanding anything, as the pseudo intellectuals are inherently evil._
They can only see what is done through their own eyes, and theirs are tainted with racism, so they project it onto others. They have to make Iago look like a bumbling imbecil because they, the "intellectual" wouldn't be persuaded by someone like him, but in reality they have - and do so all the time with glee.
In the videos, Extra Credits here, _IS_ Iago as he tells the viewer what they should think about who and what, and wants them to hate what he wants them to hate. Unlike Iago, who was happy to meet his end after what he accomplished. Extra Credits will act the victim, believe they've done nothing wrong and become the sniveling coward they project onto Igao.
I actually liked their historical videos a while ago, namely the Sengoku Jidai, and the mongol conquests, and lastly Majhapait.
but other than that? they're annoying and as you said, people who are desperate to come off as intelligent fits them
Jesus christ Extra Credits trully surpassed themselves this time around, and i thought their nazi and orc videos were shit but this one its potentially worse.
Glad i have stopped subscribing to their channel for a while, and in part i have to thank you Raven, especially with your previous responses.
Funny enough I wrote a persuasive essay for my dual credit class about why I thought Iago was ultimately an idiot. I thought it was the most rushed, clunky piece of paper with the weakest premise I ever did in high school and this was my senior year..... I got an A.
Raven Knight: I haven’t had to respond to an L take from EC in a while…
EC on their way to make an L take: 🏃♂️
Raven caught extra credits slippin
Don't tell these people about Titus Andronicus for the main villain is a black guy XD
Also amazing performance by Anthony Hopkins and anyone who dares to criticize Anthony Hopkins for a role he plays is an idiot
Damn... that final speech hits like an emotional truck.
Shame on Extra Credits for wearing bigot colored glasses and caring more about race than about the full story, about how revenge and plotting and distrust can ruin a great man alongside the envious and wrathful scoundrel.
"They were so bad back then. Remember that so you know that I am a better person... no a great person." - Extra Credits.
"People back then were racists because I need them to have been." Also Extra Credits.
They are cut out parts of the stories intentionally just as they lies. Also they are obsessed with racists or racists themself.
And yes people should read the real story so they can see that Extra Credits are lying.... again...
I wants Extra Credits talking about Yasuke to see if they ships the part about Oda Nobunaga not believing Yasuke being black or if they are going to call Nobu for a racist... but then again... both Yasuke and Oda Nobunaga don't deserves been in a video from the Extra Credits (well again for Nobu).
I thought it said extra credits doesn’t understand Ohio
Nobody understands Ohio, I've been here 27 years and I still don't
Ohio.
Hey EC, what about all those songs about women killing their ex’s, huh? YOU GONNA CRITICIZE THOSE?! God, EC has truly fallen from grace!
Well I'm sure those boyfriends deserved it, they were men after all. They weren't of the right chromosomes.
Yes, everything IS about race to them.
It’s genuinely concerning
Wow, was not expecting Raven to get this peeved.
I don't understand how You can make yourself so unlikable without even starting your rundown of a Story. God at this point this is a Talent.
Are you referring to Raven or EC?
@@ulfberht4431 Extra Credits of course but yes i suppose i didn't make this clear enough
Its a shame this guy does not have more subs
I always thought the lust for Desdemona was fairly minor to Iago to being passed up for promotion for two reasons. One when Cassio is accused of killing Roderigo Othello give Iago the promotion he wanted, that's not enough for Iago but even if it was and he wanted to stop there by then he's in too deep to stop. Iago becomes a victim of his own plot showing he harms everyone including himself showing how evil is both self-defeating and self-destructive. Second because it's so petty, so simple it means ANYONE could be Iago, he serves as a warning of what might happen if we don't make the constant effort to be virtuous.
27:26 the guy finally had it with ec's shit.
10:56 this part had me dying it was awesome
Just waiting for Iago in this video to get eaten by a Dilophosaurus.
Man remember when Extra Credits had the old guy who had a charismatic voice that made you not hate his guts every second sentence?
Remember when they kept opinions out of their videos, and when they had them in they were very minor?
Remember when they made *good* content?
How the Angel has fallen
At this point, I’m expecting someone to make a parody about Extra Credit’s So you haven’t read videos and summaries the problems. I can image the parody highlighting their virtue signalling, their bad art design (seriously it looks like a horrible mashup of Rick & Morty and Rayman), their bad jokes, their double standards, their lack of understanding a basic story etc etc. Hopefully this parody would get them to change their ways a little.
As someone who has loved this play and the Lawrence Fishburne film since high school English classes, an admirer of this channel and a former admirer of Extra Credits, this felt cathartic.
As for those behind the thought processes that go into these Extra Credits videos, I have only one thing to say: Macbeth.
Shame is for those with a functioning frontal cortex, Ravenboi.
Finding you was the best decision I made since unsubscribing from ECs channel.
Great video and I don't get why Extra credits is doing these.
10:56 spot on lmao 😂
All I know about Othello is the Laurence Olivier 'controversy' people have. So let's learn of the play....and see how long until Extra Credit brings it up.
Edit: Look at that, one of the first things they talked about. I wish I was surprised.
This is a truly deplorable interpretation of Othello and I hope anyone who reads the play because of the extra credits video will see right through everything they say.
Extra credits attempts at being progressive and demonizing classic liturature because of th times its super cringy
Great video bro, always love the response videos.
10:58 we've been here before. oh right they call us nazi for playing as germans.
Funny thing is leaving out so much detail from the pillow incident is it makes it seem like several other people just appeared in the room *before* the remaining characters entered it. If the later group to enter the room and witness it was important, than surely the former group's reaction and reason for being there is important too. If that's how their video goes then they're essentially saying "Oh yeah some of the other characters are there too and then the Venetian authorities arrive"
I mean, extra credits has a point about how it was offensive that white men were doing blackface. Other than that, he’s a hypocrite.
What do they understand?
Nothing, they understand nothing.
I'm curious what do you think of the accuracy of extra credits other channel specifically the ones talking about history
EC does three kinds of videos: Their talks on video games, their talks on history, and their talks on literature. I know nothing about video game design, so I usually leave those alone. History though? When I watch their history videos, I usually notice that they like to zero in on aspects of history that are...rather uncomfortable to talk about, such as racial relations, revolutions, or things of that nature.
7 times out of 10, their videos are obviously biased and filled with loaded information, but I also know that if I address those videos, I will be more easily lambasted because of the difficult nature of the topic. So usually I don't touch them (although, I usually don't have to. They like to end their history videos with a video where someone points out the things they got wrong or the lies they said. Is it not very telling that they have to acknowledge their own lies on their own channel?)
Literature though? That's an area I can approach because I have been interpreting and studying literature and story telling for years, and that's a lot easier to discuss without offending people because, usually, people haven't read the books these morons are talking about and thus I can provide a more open and better perspective on the piece.
11:10, I thought that there was some ambiguity about Iago’s motivations and that prejudice was one of the possible explanations
Of all the reasons Iago alluded to, race was never one of them, and it wouldn't have made sense for the time. But even if race was a partial factor, it was left incredibly ambiguous...meanwhile EC is touting it like it's the primary reason. They're deliberately trying to create that as the reason for a politically driven message.
@@RavenKnightYT Thank you for the clarification
Othello was actually the most cheerful thing I got to read during a creative writing class I took in college. That teacher was definitely messed up and any time I find someone else who took his class it’s like two veterans talking about the horrors of war. Like I’ve seen people have Nam flashbacks talking about his class and it left me so mentally scarred I burned all my notes, assignments, and the teachers own book of accursed poetry that he foisted upon the class. When 40K talks about the pain caused by heretical writing I understand what that feels like.
I imagine the books not covered Extra Credits very likely interpreted in their typical ham-fisting current politics. And right off the bat, we see Their hypocrisy that had net them mockery over the years on full display. As Extra Credits has probably said with some acting choices of modern times. _The best actor for the job._
And their take on how when men where made to play women. Just because you guys are that lazy, doesn't mean everyone is. I feel this is some sort of bigotry and it doesn't surprise me Extra Credit is one such person.
Sometimes you just wanna say FU to EC.
I read Ohio in the title on accident lol
I approve of this reaction
Man, ExtraCredits just can't stop making bad videos
it's Extra Credits they are going to do it a some point, it's sad and bad but it's just them being true to their hypocrisy.
Pantomine shows in here in britain always have a bloke playing a woman. We call them the panto dame and shes often a chubby, loveable and funny character and often the one who gets heckled and yelled at with "THEYRE BEHIND YOU!!"
They make awful and utterly reductionist videos on every book they've covered. Their video on Slaughter House 5 my favorite book upset a bit as they leave out so much of the narrative, miss quote Kurt Vonnegut, and barely cover the over all theme of the short book which constantly states what the narrative means. It only really bothers me because people will watch that video without going on to read the book when they poorly cover the themes of the book.
another one add it to the list
Othello sounds like a Chad I ain't gonna lie
hey my college teacher says hamlet was an tragedy of obedience, I don't agree what say you?
A tragedy of obedience? How so? If Hamlet had just done what he was told by his father, it wouldn't have been a tragedy.
@@RavenKnightYT yeah the teacher say since the ghost, which is hamlet's father told hamlet to kill Claudius which since he follow it, it led to his ruin thus a tragedy of obedience, and to be frank this is bullshit, since the last time some one killed a loved one in what I know exactly they tend to try to pay blood with blood, it doesn't matter if some order to forgive or to kill, then the teacher also say since Ophelia follow the orders of her father it led to her doom as well and a tragedy of obedience as well... I'm pretty sure that hamlet from my own personally understanding is more of a tragedy of revenge, since if Hamlet ever forgive or never learn about the murder, their was a fair chance that his uncle was going to past the crown to him, especially I felt like the uncle did favour hamlet but felt very guilty from killing hamlet's father, and was push to the breaking point what hamlet made the actors act out the death of his father.
What are you arguing against? If it’s the comments of someone else, shouldn’t you have played some of their comments to argue against???
Well done killing windmills.
You either didn’t watch the video, or you just don’t like what I had to say. You know full well I wasn’t arguing against comments. Don’t compare me to Don Quixote when you seem to be behaving like Fortunado; blissfully unaware of the reality in front of him.
