HBO Max Doesn't Understand Velma (A Response Video)

  • I didn't expect to make another response video so soon, and I certainly didn't expect it to be about Scooby-Doo or Velma. But...I got so tired of it. Every article and think piece these last few days has been on Velma being lesbian or Velma's new TV show where she's Indian now, and how this is all so progressive and creative, and in no way pandering or manipulative. I watched the trailer and it just felt like one big insult with nothing substantial at all. I couldn't resist taking a stab at the creators for their BLATANT insulting attitude.
    I do hope you enjoy.

Ok so, I’m no film writer of an kind, but after seeing the trailer and all of the controversy I thought of a story where they could keep their diverse cast and not upset fans. Instead of a prequel, what about a sequel. In this, the mystery gang is retired. One day, a group of kids (what will become the new mystery gang) find the mystery machine old, and abandoned. They decide to fix it up and drive home, but an old man stops them and tells them that the van is special. It is then revealed that this old man is Fred. The kids explain how they have an interest in mysteries, so Fred tells them about the van and old mystery gang, and says that if the kids can solve a mystery he sets up then they can be the new mystery gang. This would be the first episode

they could do an origin story WITH Scooby!! without scooby, it doesn't work! could it work with characters with the sawpd races? It depends! I believe if they don't focus on using the race sowp to promote the show and get people of color attention, it could work! but this show clearly just does this to appear "progressive", when honestly, i have to agree that not one of them needed to change their race! maybe just ONE of them and it didn't even have to be a big deal! like, just a little thing! but most of all, DON'T EXCLUDE SCOOBY!!
they might do a show that tells the gang's origin story WITH him! he doesn't need to cease to exist! I've seen footage of the show, and it doesn't look good at all! and i'm the type that's ok with race sawps! I don't think it's necessary all the time, but as long as the character's race isn't EVERYTHING about the character, I'd be ok! but not! they'll probably make the show all about her race cause that's what these types of shows are!! they don't care about minorities!!
I refuse to use the word "woke" because for me, that word has become a bad word against people of color, women and lgbts! i know its not what the word is supposed to be but most use that word to hide their biguity!
Other than that, this show is going to be awful!

When everyone talks about the scooby doo characters no one says “man, I love Fred for how WHITE he is. I like how all the main characters are white.” People like the characters because they’re likable. Sure you can make Velma Indian to make Indian fans happy but what about all the other races? By making race the focus you’re actively creating conflict among the audience because now it’s “oh I like this character because I relate to them” it’s “oh I like this character cause they’re the same race as me”. The race of the character shouldn’t matter in the first place. I would respect HBO if they just changed the races and never commented or made a big deal about it. Because that would make a point to say that those who had an issue with simply the change itself are the problem. But because they tried to excuse it by trying to fight back they now gave fans a valid reason to be mad because their intention was to point out race. If they just went “we did it because why not 🤷‍♂️“ I would agree with them because like I said, it shouldn’t matter.

I don't really remember much of it so I'm probably just out of it. I feel like the biggest screw ups about this has to be what they did to Shaggy and Scooby though. Scooby, the show's namesake, is just no-where to be found. With Shaggy pretty much being gone to, I mean this new guy could just be a stand in or something and have NOTHING to do with Shaggy, maybe they're out doing something else and they just threw a random guy in with a green shirt to throw people off. That would follow the current trend of HBO's crappy self aware comedy.

Yeah, the teaser is clearly bad and made in bad taste. . and everything this is clearly nonsense. .but that last bit about her being a lesbian and it being "politicized" .. James Gunn originally intended on writing Velma as a Lesbian in the Scooby Doo movies, as part of his original idea about it being a more adult parody of Scooby Doo, and I'm not sure for how long its been, but its been a running joke throughout the fandom that Velma was secretly in the closet. . and possibly Bi. . I think specific scenes in Scooby Doo they picked out on. .I can't say for them, but that seems to be the most thing.
But here's the thing . . The race changing clearly feels like a move for diversity sake alone, but criticizing it just for the face it IS race-swapping, as well as criticizing Velma for being a Lesbian in one movie and calling it 'politics" . .just makes you sound like every other obnoxious, Anti-SJW, secretly trying to not show off just how bigoted and racist they are, youtubers that call themselves "real fans" . . There is nothing inherently wrong about a character being changed to a different color or a different sexuality. . so quit making it out to seem like it is.

Read through your first paragraph, and that was fine. I know nothing about James Gunn's intentions, and if it was his intention to make her lesbian in the movies, so be it. However the original Scooby Doo was created by William Hannah and Joseph Barbara, alongside Joe Ruby and Ken Spears. They did not make Velma lesbian. They actually kept romantic interest out of most of the series of "Scooby Doo, Where Are You," which I'm greatful for. I wasn't even fond of the constant 'will they won't they' with Daphne and Fred. This should be a show about mystery solving and comedic entertainment. It should remain that way.

Wow...okay. Firstly, I did not criticize them JUST for the fact that it's race swapping. I pointed out the reason. The voice actress herself admitted the reason was to self insert herself as Velma, which indicates they didn't do it for the sake of bettering the character or the show itself, but just to virtue signal and to invoke wish fulfillment. I pointed this out. If you're going to race swap, I'd hope it would at least be for a reasonable reason or for the sake of more than just 'diversity.'
Secondly, you think I'm trying to hide my bigotry and racism? Friend, I've dated three girls from Asia. I work with Latino and Black individuals every day. I've gone through two different school districts where I taught underprivilged and at risk students of EVERY racial background, and one of my BEST was a young black student who was smarter than half of my class put together, and I intend to move to Japan to teach English. I'm sorry dude, but if you know ANYTHING about me you know I'm not a racist, and I'm disgusted you jumped to such a conclusion just because I pointed out the idiocy of this choice to make Velma Indian for literally no reason other than: so she can be a self insert.
_"There is nothing inherently wrong about a character being changed to a different color or a different sexuality. . so quit making it out to seem like it is."_
You're right. There's nothing inherently wrong with it. But the question must be asked 'why?' Why do it in the first place? Who does it serve? What does it improve? What does it benefit? You're right there's nothing INHERENTLY wrong with it, but when you start to understand the reason for the choice, you start to understand the REAL motives behind the creators and the story itself. They aren't making Velma Indian because they CARE about Velma, the show, Indian people, or the audience itself. They're doing it for the sake of self insertion, and to be 'diverse.' Which is a poor motivation when creating ANY project. Diversity for diversities sake is POOR priority.
Oh and......on that note. If there really isn't anything wrong with changing a characters skin color or sexuality, then I'm sure no one will mind a remake of Black Panther with an all white cast? Maybe a remake of Steven Universe where all the gems are male? Or perhaps we could make a MLK movie where Dr. King is played by a white man? You think no one will mind that? You think less bigoted people will just overlook that choice? Or do you think the side that preaches this very dogma will turn into hypocrites at the first sign that their own standards will be reversed on them?
Friend, I did nothing to offend you. Your first paragraph was polite, cordial, and well met. There was no need to insult me.
