  • Tottenham's summer has seen a complete u-turn in policy from chairman Daniel Levy, with all their transfers carried out early in the window and £60m spent on a rotation player in Richarlison. James Horncastle and Jack Pitt-Brooke joined Mark Chapman to discuss why Antonio Conte and Fabio Paratici have enforced a new way of thinking at Spurs...

When the pre tax profits from a full packed season in the stadium and the non football events come out, the football financial world will be shocked and levy will not be able to make excuses anymore. Remember levy said the stadium is the game changer to compete with the elite. And not forgetting a full packed stadium this season. Enic will have to make a big big decision soon, either take the big step and help conte build a side to seriously compete with pool and man c or sell the club. It’s simple as that.

Most players are over 6 foot, are full internationals and have had the full Conte pre season. This is a Spurs team that will bully other teams, out-run, out-muscle, out-jump and out-score everyone. It's not just the players - they now have a set piece specialist coach so may finally score from corners too. Spurs now have a team where if one player is injured or subbed, they will be replaced with another without any drop in performance. The opposition may have a strategy for Son and Kane, but there are now eight others (and many more on the bench) who can score in the team. There's no reliance on one or two people.
The transfer policy and quality that has been brought in outstanding. If you need proof, sit back and watch Arsenal, Man Utd, Chelsea and others panic buying. It's like watching the Spurs of old. This will be one hell of an interesting season and I believe all the answers will be provided this weekend at the Chelsea v Tottenham match.

Yes for the stadium but this is a bog standard transfer window, nothing has changed. The one expensive player will be a sub. the bargain basement Bissouma our best buy and a 34 year old Perisic coming to the end of his career. Two young potential signings with sell on value. We got Perisic and Foster on a free and Clement 4th choice LCB from Barca on loan. If you think this is backing Conte then you need to lay off the sauce.
There's nobody to challenge Dire for CB, we need a quality RWB who's as good as Perisic but on the opposite side obaviously. We need a strong hard working flexible playmaker who can play in various positions.
We need a quality back up striker and some quality to come in and challenge Kulusevski. We got battered against Chelsea in the middle which put so much pressure on our defence. Romero's out now and Sanchez who can't control the ball nor pass is in his place. How has this been a window where Conte has been backed?
Go and listen to Aleister Gold and to all the propaganda about all the players we were supposedly in for. Levy does this every year and then the excuses come as to why we didn't sign them. Because he wouldn't fork out big money for another superstar is the real reason. Paqueta was perfect for Conte and now he has agreed terms for 51 million with West Ham apparantly. The same with Grealish, Bruno, Dyballa and Diaz as Danile Levy doesn't want a load of superstars on big wages..

I put it to you that Levy has not changed his after season, bargain-bin-hunting-ways due to pressure from the Italian duo. In stead, consider that Levy slowly improved Spurs since the early 2000's, never overspent in a ManU like fashion, rebuilt the stadium, restructured the club's debt, appointed both the Don and Conte in full knowledge of how they operate, got Enic to play sugar daddy, and then went on (arguably) the craziest transfer window in the club's history. While I do describe myself as a pro-Levy conspiracy theorist, I feel that there is enough here to support the idea of a systematic approach to strategic goals., a slow and steady improvement in the club's value, both on and off the pitch. Spurs is a football club AND a business, and it is non-sensical to see the two sides as unrelated because footballers don't come cheap. Levy might just be the shrewdest operator in European football, but because he's such a private guy, and usually suffers under social media criticism, we are not recognizing his greatest achievements. Just a thought.

I reluctantly have to agree with you on some points. Yes he has balanced the books, but hopefully he has learnt that football isn't the same as other businesses! Buying young players as an investment might earn money in the future but aren't ready today! Getting last minute bargains on the transfer window won't have preseason to get matchfit or especially if from abroad have time to acclimatise and learn how the manager plays! Let the manager pick the signings not the board because he knows the players he needs and he won't play them anyway to make a point ( e.g. Bale never played under Mourinho!) You also tend to make more panic buys and they think if you pay £60 mil for a player they must be good like NDombele. It's not just about skills but also if they can adapt to the manager and the pace of the premier league which he wasn't and couldn't. It ends up losing the club a lot of money.Yes Levy has given Conte what he needed to stay, but I just know that sooner or later Levy will be unable to help himself and relapse into city businessman and go for profit margin Conte will walk and we will be back on the spursey rollercoaster of ups and downs and nearlys for another 20 odd years until the next false dawn! The Juventus squad is now loaded with his Bosman signings that nobody wants and he's paralyzed Juve's ability on the transfer market for many future summers. It was so bad that his buddy Agnelli had to let go of him a year ago and Exor (the holding company that owns the club) that to send two new people (Arrivabene and Cherubini) to clean up his mess.

I know people like to believe that for Levy its only about success off the pitch and never on it, but the two go hand in hand. Success on the pitch means champions league football which is hugely lucrative and he is building the Spurs brand up and for that you need an elite coach and elite players. If you're winning then you're making bank and I think if Levy trusts the vision of Paratici then that's just smart delegation.

    • @nochso6835
      @nochso6835 Před rokem

No, success on the pitch means trophies.
You must compete to WIN. This is not youth soccer where improvement is the goal.
This difference in the definition of success is exactly the key issue at Tottenham.
Too many fans, Levy included, define success as - consistency in the top 4 of the PL/aka participation in the Champions League. That's why, in 2021, Levy was so heavily invested and interested in being part of the Super League. It was soon revealed that he valued that participation over and above winning the Carabao Cup final.
To others at Tottenham, success means winning one, some or all of the competitions that we take part in, and then trying to be reasonably consistent over the years.
These definitions say a lot about the way the fans that hold them view their own club.
      I favor the latter definition.

@@robwyyi I'm sorry but your looking at this all wrong. The best way to ensure future success is profitability, every club should strive to be profitable. Look at every other 'big club' outside the top 6 and they all have failed to make the impression Levy has in building themselves up to the others level.
Levy has overseen the financial rise of tottenham from nothing to being able to compete with the other top teams. Without massive cash injections like Chelsea and City. Success on the football pitch is very difficult when Klopp and Guadiola are in the other dugouts. Other teams attempt to improve to you know. Levy can make all the best possible decisions (not that anyone does) and spurs still could fail. That's not spurs fault that's the situation. For example spurs probably win the league in 16/17 season if Chelsea have European football but that's outside their control. To say he doesn't know how to win titles is true, he's not a football person but to say that's a failing of him is ridiculous. His job is to find the right footballing people to make tottenham successful and overall he's done okay, Harry Redknapp, Poch and now Conte are all progressing the club forwards, and behind the scenes he's brought in Fabio Paratici who oversee Juventus' rebirth and could do the same for spurs. If you don't think spurs are closer to wining now than they were 10 years ago then I can't help you. But Levy for all his faults when it comes to penny pinching has brought spurs from the nowhere they were to a contender. It's easy to say Levy's at fault for spurs lack of this or that but ultimately its been his stability in charge that's lead to you being able to talk about how he needs titles to further increase profits, thank you captain obvious. Lastly no one thinks that one summer’s worth of transfers is going to ensure titles for spurs. Levy is merely stepping up investment to back the manager he has to show his believe in Conte and attempting to get the most out of the manager he has while he has him.
