Welcome back to Casually Competitive Crafts! In this episode we will go over the efficient and optimal wincons for Chulane, Teller of Tales as well as giving an overview and primer on good cards to add. Think of this like a mini Deck Tech or Primer for Chulane, Teller of Tales that focuses on the essentials and gives you the information you need to build a deck around this commander.

Let us know what you thought about the amount of information in this video. We wanted to keep it brief and focused on the essentials - but let us know what you would like to see in terms of the amount of information in the future!
Casually Competitive MTG I like your video guys but I wanted to let you know of a few things 😊. 1) with just clouds tone curio and two 1 cmc creatures you can go off. You won’t add to your starting mana but when the Chileans trigger land enters cloud stone will let you bounce another land land. 2) Also overburden works just like mana breach with shrieking drake, costs one less mana, also hurts najeelas Tolkens. 3) There are many combos on how to win with earth craft and shrieking drake/village bell ringer. Just shrieking drake and earth craft and an island wins the game.
I did forget to mention that Cloudstone Curio line, good catch. It can be a super nice / compact backup to Mana Breach + Drake. Overburden is also a nice backup card as well. I personally prefer Mana Breach since it can be used as a nice stax-y hate piece, but I have definitely debated slotting Overburden into my personal Chulane deck many times. In terms of the Earthcraft combo, I wanted to try to limit this video to the essentials and didn't want to get too sidetracked with all the possible ways this commander can win - that being said using Earthcraft is definitely a strong card in this deck
I wanted to ask if you could explain the symbiote combo, I'm not fully understanding how it works I see the play of turning it into an elf so it can bounce itself to untap something but does this only work if it's untapping a creature that taps G+1? If so that's fine but I just felt like a was missing something, I understand in the scenario I described it would let you replay the elf until you've decked yourself and netted a ton of mana in the process. The only other way is if the entity effect is like a state based effect and it doesn't matter if you play a creature after it's been used it enters as a 1/1 changeling? If that's the case I see how the loop would work with just a single mana dork.
I've seen some food chain builds as well. I can't judge on how good they are, so I'm just putting this here for sake of completeness. Food chain will let you draw your deck with Chulane and Mistform Griffon/ Eternal Scourge.
More important is how you pronounce him than build him, if you say it wrong he doesn't go infinite
Now this is a series i can't wait to see more of
This series has to be a thing on your channel. Explain cEDH commander and a roadmap for the build.
“Say the line, Casually Competitive.”
“Sigh...Chewlane.”
“YAAAAYYYYYYYY!!!!!”
This is great as a starter, and I love the "should you keep" section.
I love that you have examples of opening hands in this series! Lots of other deck tech online only have recommendations on the cards to put in the deck, but no real game play advice on how to pilot the deck well for first-timers. Keep doing this, please!
Aside from commanders quarters this is the best deck tech type of video out there.
Even The Commander's Quarters could learn something from what these guys have done. Still, they're both fantastic and I love both channels' different types of deck tech.
That was literally one of the best deck techs I've ever seen, seriously!! It went straight to the point in the core cards that make the deck function and left the rest of the 99 space for creative individual customization! Really good stuff! And no filler.
I like Walking Ballista for Chulane, it's easy to tutor, is a win condition when infinite, can start Chulane chains as a 0 cmc creature in a pinch and rarely feels like a dead card in hand. Awesome video, looking forward to more in this series!
The “Curio + Aluren” combo you described works without Aluren in play to draw you deck, since Curio can bounce lands
Aluren does let you cast your dorks for free tho.
Omg
To be honest this video is really helpful. The way you broke down the combos and what hand to keep is good. I actually built this deck recently and I’m going to have to take a second look at it. Thank you keep up the great work.
It would be cool to see an animar, soul of elements video like this one. Also you definitely need to keep this series up, it's awesome!!!
please continue this series. its very helpful for newer players to understand deckbuilding and for people who are looking for a new deck to make. keep up the good work!
Oh sweet Jesus, I'm so stoked about this series! Can't wait to see where y'all take it.
Phenomenal. I absolutely loved the sample hand section, really gives you some insight on how the deck operates in the moment
This was a very entertaining video and I love watching this channel, keep up the good work :)
So happy I found this channel. You speak clear and concisely. Not a slave to sponsors (yet??), and upload on a decent basis. Keep it up, lads!
Thank you so much for the video. This was absolutely brilliant and well done. It was the perfect amount of information and I loved the hand analysis too that was so helpful. I also really appreciated your previous videos about the combos and how to stop them, those were both astonishingly well done. Take care!
I love this style! I've started trying to brew my own semi-competitive decks and the explanation as to why everything is in the deck is exactly what I needed. Also the explanations on opening hands was super helpful.
this series is so promising. Invaluable for understanding some different approaches to this commander. I really like how Jospeh does an amazing job of not just reading part of a list but talking about the thoery, which makes it so you can learn and build a different deck or find your own cards that fill some of the same slots if you're working on more of a budget. Very quality content.
I like the example hands a lot, I’ve been having a difficult time determing what exactly I should be keeping/mulliganing for when starting out. Loved the video! Def want to see more tecs
Simple and very helpful. Keep them coming !
I will religiously watch this series
I thank you from the bottom of my heart for correcting your pronunciation. Please continue to say it this way
This is fantastic this channel is all the things i love about commander content
Love this series!!
This is great! I cant wait for more like this!
Super enjoyed this. Looking forward to seeing more commanders.
YES!! I love this video! It’s short sweet and to the point. If lays a very solid groundwork for the deck and most if not all of its strategies in a clear and effective way! I love it and would love even more of these videos, perhaps maybe explaining blood pod or a variant of blood pod?
This is fantastic. Please keep this up.
I really loved this episode and will be using it to tune up my chulane deck!
I absolutely love the opening hand segment. I think this is something so important that not enough people talk about in depth. One of my biggest level up moments was learning how to mulligan properly and when to aggressively mulligan. Opening hand decisions can make or break a game for you sometimes and so it is very important to be able to make the decisions well. Thanks for the dope video!
Perfectly timed, I was thinking about doing a casual Chulane just using the commander as a card draw/ramp engine, No infinite combos
Chulane is such a strong value engine for sure. I've run a lower powered version of him before and the value is still very strong and fun to play with
Can you share a lower power level of Chulane? My favorite thing to do is draw cards
Love the video and your channel in general! One combo I didn’t see mentioned was earthcraft+shrieking drake + a basic island = infinite chulane triggers as well. Earthcraft is just great value as well and turns all your creatures into hastey mana dorks
Been dying for you to do a vid like this!
Good shit my dudes. More of this kind of thing please
This is a great series!
Keep these vids coming 🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼
This was awesome. 👍
awesome format ! sweet and short
I absolutely love this. New sub!
I'm glad to see this tech video not going down the Labman route to win, and I was considering upgrading the precon Chulane Brawl deck I have into an EDH deck, so I appreciate it. :)
Really liked the video and seeing what you can do and how to build with it. Seeing the infinate combo possiblities is intriguing. Most of the time I can't make any oficial play events, or store events due to my work scheduale, and the group of friends I play with, we decided not to use infinate comboes in any of our decks. Would be interesting to see possible builds with this commander, and others, that don't use infinate combos, but still keep them competative.
Friend of mine introduced me to your chanel a while back, and I have enjoyed videos. You gouys are great. Thanks for what your doing.
I absolutely loved this
This was a good episode!
Love this content! I would vote for more videos :)
Dope video please make more! Very helpful!
Awesome series, would love to see more casually competitive deck techs. Scarab God would be a great build to see.
Cool stuff! Love that the video focuses on the intentions of the deck and not on "mandatory" cards! (Well, apart from combo pieces XD)
I really like the concept of this, it makes a lot of sense. I would love to see one for some good value commanders as well, including maybe tatyova, kess, and yarok. Can’t wait for more 😊
Chulane is such a fun commander. I made a merfolk tribal deck with him, and it’s such great to play. Love the deck techs!
Fun vid. I'm working on a combo persistent petitioner deck so this helped. Never knew about that village bell ringer. So that with alluren will def help me combo faster!
Fantastic video! I love the opening hand analysis, really fantastic job, I would love to see more video like this, on different commander, like Anje for example. I also love the analysis on cards which seem good for the deck but don't really belong (the Thassa discusssion part), more of that would be really helpful.
WICKED helpful. Thanks!
This was awesome
Loved it, more pleaseeeee
Found y'all via Mitch at Commander's Quarters. Keep up the awesome work!
Love the gameplay on this channel, but mini primers? YES!
Please do Alela next, finish the brawl cycle!!!!
(At least the competitive ones)
Hasn't Korvold been made into a competitive commander as well? Syr Gwyn isn't doing so hot, even with that flaming sword, but Korvold isn't bad from what I have heard.
Yep, Korvold and Chulane are highly competitive, Alela has a little bit less power and Syr Gwyn got the short stick.
@@RikuAkimoto My brother is building Alela currently but not in competitive unfortunately. Still, even in casual she's a freakin powerhouse. Sadly Gwyn just got shafted. Sadly, for the archetype the card is in, you should either play Edgar for a better tribal strategy and the same colors or Najeela for access to two more colors and a better aggro strategy.
Can't wait for next videos
This was awesome!! If possible I'd really like to see a breakdown of korvold .
Amazing video
I like this a lot, I find deckbuilding for cedh very interesting and I would like to learn more about the format, plus it'll be interesting to see what is good besides Flash Hulk.
Please keep doing episodes like this !
Amazing work, really fresh and dynamic. Make this a thing, please.
i would love a video about either Kykar or Urza, great work
This is awesome! More deck techs please ! emry next?
So I'm here debating whether to build chulane or wait for the new pre-cons and you guys come out with this fantastic video. I already have a list for my mana base that's how close I was to deciding to build chulane.
Chulane has been one of my favorite decks since he was spoiled. He's an insane value engine that can easily play some soft stax as well as a bunch of control. You'll definitely have fun playing him
Casually Competitive MTG definitely I love playing him as well! I play a midrange hatebears version of him and it does really good at my tables. I’m working on my primer right now 😊
Please do Urza in the future! I know it's fairly straightforward, one sided stax until you get infinite mana and win via Thassa's oracle but I have SO much trouble with opening hands and some general strategies and I'd love to see a video with that!
Good stuff
Pleaaasse do more of these! They are so much better than being given a cookie cutter deck.
+1 for tasigur control!
Just started to play this game, this is my first Commander. I've been building a tribal melfork with this oldman:^)
Really enjoyed this. No feedback other than to say please keep making these.
Out of curiosity, how long did this take to make compared to your usual gameplay videos?
Thank you! Most of the time that was spend making this video was creating the new assets and animations. So not including those, this video took ~1 hour to write, ~45 minutes to record audio, and ~2 hours to edit compared to gameplays which are ~1.5 hours to record audio, and ~8-10 hours to edit. The time required for these videos will vary depending on how many we make; however, for this one specifically, the writing didn't take very long since I've spent hours upon hours playing and modifying my Chulane deck over the past few months
You could also go for the Food Chain route with Chulane. Although it's a bit more glass cannon than the Aluren/Curio build you got going on. But it's also super fun to play and it works surprisingly well.
Manipulate Fate and Foresight are really good tutors and BANT also has alright access to tutoring Food Chain as well. You can run Riftsweeper, Nox Rev and Regrowth as back up if your Food Chain gets taken away.
I put a food chain combo in mine. It has been amazing
This is def a great idea for future videos. It helps teach new CEDH players (like myself) and it is very interesting. Think you can do one on that midrange green deck you guys played with tymna and thrasios?
Now this is a series I would watch 10/10
Do Xenagos or Ruric Thar next! pleaaasee!
Can we have next a video on how to consider which removal/counter spell is good for a deck?
This was great, I'm just starting to watch more competitive and semi competitive videos. I'd be really interested to see a blood/blue pod and a derevi, empyrical tactition deck tech.
About the pronounciation, I'm pretty sure Chulane's name comes from Cuchulainn, a character from irish mythology, and thus should follow the gaelic pronounciation of that name.
I'm no expert on gaelic, so idk if that's what you already did with your pronounciation, just saying for anyone interested.
I also pronounce it in Gaelic chu as cu'
You know where i can learn gaelic online guys??
It's kinda nice to see a competitive deck with Blue/Green that doesn't run Flash or Lab Man.
I've had this deck built for a while now, and my deck has about 20 different ways to combo with all synergistic cards that dont cut down on your good or bad draws. Basically, there are 100 different ways to combo with Chulane
I like these videos. Maybe doing short ones on cards like staff of domination and scroll rack. Maybe even some land destruction.
I see people using these efdects but not really knowing why to have them in the deck.
Perhaps this would take running more basic lands then you would normally wish to, but I can't help but feel earthcraft is another option for the deck.
With drake, it works similer to the mana breach combo, except instead of returning the land to hand, you just keep tapping/untapping. It makes your mana dorks tap for mana the turn they come out, if you don't have crossroads out. You net mana with intruder alarm out.
Heck, when the worst thing I can say about earthcraft is the potential to run squirrel craft combo in the deck, that's fine. And while I would never consider squirrel craft combo viable for CEDH, it lets you draw out with Beck.(I use both Beck and glimpse of nature as redundancy for chulanes draw effect. Perfect options? No. But always useful cards for digging deeper)
Thassas Oracle isnt necessarily a "dead" card, she does have an etb and can be bounced by Chulane to recast if needed for the win
I wouldve liked to see you break down the food chain chulane option also
Chulane could be replaced with a 5 mana sorcery that says "Starting with the player to your left, each opponent plays a removal spell if able"
I loved the deck tech. Maybe Edric or Chainer Dementia master?
One suggestion: before making these commander introductory videos, make a commander tier list walk down by colors and styles. So people know which commander suits their preference of style and/or color. This way, any future video similar to this Chulane video is easily referenced. For example, if I want to play Bant with a adaptive style, I can choose Chulane, which would lead me to this video.
im making a chulane Tempo deck i need help thinking of "end game value creatures" to add , currently have elder Gargaroth , Hydroid Krasis , Hydra Omnivore, Dream Traler, Kogla .
Great vid guys, good build, carpet of flowers can be handy in the deck I have found and at 8.27 you include a red card, pyroclasam, dont think you are going to be casting that in a Chulane deck.
Pyroclasm was one of the cards to watch out for as if generally does a good job at cleaning up mana dorks. That section of the video was intended to show what types of spells to look out for from your opponents.
@@CasuallyCompetitiveMTG fair enough, missed that part. In my Chulane deck, funnily enough, Linvala is in and she draws a lot of hate. Secret to taking on a Chulane deck is, dont let Chulane stay on the field for too long
Walking Balista and Thassa's Oracle should really be played! It's okay to have one dead card in the deck. Walking Balista can also be played for 0 to trigger Chulane.
Hey mate, love these more casual edh but remains competitive via creatures
I’m new to commander format but I am working on building a Chulane deck, I just have one question for anyone who sees this. Will chulanes passive ability only tigger if I pay his mana cost and summon him from the command zone? Just wondering
Nice deck I wish I had like 700 to drop on it lol ive always wanted cedh decks but 600 plus is a lot to drop al at once lol
But love the deck tec 😄
Hey guys, first time commenting here, but do you think that it would be possible to run some decks that are not only competitive but also budget, like between 50-100 dollars
Sidisi Brood Tyrant!
Video was a pretty good primer for chulane, I have the deck built myself already and had a few questions.
1. Why prowling serpopard over destiny spinner? Destiny spinner is two 2cmc instead of 3, also protects enchantments , and can be an infinite mana outlet.
2. I see a lot of lists that include smothering tithe, but it seems like a dead card in the deck a good portion of the time. The main problem being its 4 mana and doesn’t help you go infinite or help draw into a wincon.
Serpopod is in there because it is uncounterable itself. Helps make it almost guaranteed it will stick and make your other creatures uncounterable. I do personally like destiny spinner alot though. Probably wouldn't be bad to throw in there as some redundancy/late game value.
Personally I prefer Serpopard because it itself is uncounterable so I treat it like an expensive silence. Destiny Spinner is nice for sure, but it gets hit by low CMC counterspells like Swan Song making it a little less secure. The lower CMC is nice but if I'm at the point where I'm trying to go for it and feel like I need more protection, the extra G is usually worth it.
Smothering Tithe is nice because it generates a decent amount of value in games that tend to be more grindy. Ramping out a 4CMC spell isn't super hard in this deck and spending 4 CMC to accrue passive value over the next turn or two can be pretty relevant. It's a bit of a nonbo with the artifact hate, but I've still found it to be a valuable slot in my games
Casually Competitive MTG fair enough, seems like a better card on the combo turn in most cases.
great content. make more ;)
Love this. Now korvold lands lol
How does chulane interact with tap lands
