It's both a union and a nation just like UK and USSR
Short answer: yes.
Long answer: affirmative.
USA is a union of states the states are "united"
Saying that the United States is a country is like saying that the EU is a country please Americans USA is not a country every state has its own laws same as the EU and you can cross the open borders and again same as the EU.
@@zaujimaveinformacie4008 Federal law still supercedes state law. He mentions the states that have legalized marijuana and how they get around that. Legally speaking though the federal government can still enforce those laws but they choose not to because it would be incredibly expensive and unpopular. The legal authority is still there though so it is sovereign. A lot of this is super over simplified and there are major differences between the US and the EU that make the US a country. Great video. The US originally based itself upon the “Republic of the Seven United Netherlands” which united to declare their independence from Spain. Once independent these seven provinces had independent self rule but with a federal government as well. Where the US differs is when it began to expand westward beyond the original concept, but in theory each state is supposed to be highly sovereign and independent, with the Feds only involving themselves with regards to maintaining a common currency, a common defense and promotion of commerce… and that’s about it. Since the end of the Civil War however the Feds have quickly assumed far more power under the guise of technological advancement (i.e.- interstate roads for vehicles must be a Federal matter, Dept of Energy, Dept of Education, FEMA etc).

Love how he starts talking about how the united states resides in more than 1 continent even though it doesn't say that in the laws
So RI is a slight side step to the federal law thing. RI was given self-governance to avoid it from trying to secede from the union and basically probably RI’s plan was to wait for a war and then just secede (RI was one of the most important tactical states during the civil war so it isn’t too other worldly of an idea). RI was sort of forced into the union so it was unruly so USA gave self-governance which has sort of back-fired on their part.

As a non-American, I find this very interesting and confusing. How do they even deal with such overlapping and contradicting powers and laws huh
v3xman Federal laws are laws the whole nation must follow, but the states can technically decide which ones they want to follow or not. State laws are laws that are only follow in a specific state. Like in Colorado, weed is legal for recreational use, but not in Texas or Virginia.
Where are you from? I'm French and seem to have most of it down.
v3x, ignore what Nobody said. Basically, Federal laws apply to everyone and establish a minimum standard for all states. States can enact laws more strict but not less strict. The legalization of marijuana is an act of civil disobedience, but is technically not allowed to be done.
this is why I think that federations are an inefficient form of government.
The United States of America is a representative republic, not a federation.

Well, I guess politicly, Two land masses would separate into separate continents, even though that is not a correct defenition, back then with limited tech, it was correct, kinda like Europe and asia, it depends on how you look at it, Most people could look at it like its two separate continents. But it would also be correct to view it the same, And back when they did, I assume they thought 'hmm, this is separate but huge land masses, lets divide it into north and south' it was basically two correct choices, and they chose the more popular one.
Basically, the Americas were physically split by the US because of the Panama Canal. Essentially, it helped the US get ships from one side of the continent to the other much faster. Conveniently, it opened the month before WW1 started, so it helped the USA get ships from the Pacific to the Atlantic when they joined the war. It was originally proposed by Charles of Spain in 1534 to build a canal through Central America get ships through faster, and was finally built by the US, finishing in 1914. The people of Nicaragua wanted it built through them, however panama at the time had been having a lot of separatist movements, and they split from Columbia in 1903. Panama also wanted the Canal built through them, and were willing to pay a lot less for it. The US agreed to build it, as they also wanted it built so they could get their ships though.
In that case, I think it was probably Manifest Destiny, I've always been taught that the US wanted control over North America, which probably got Americans used to saying North America, rather than just America. If it's not that, then idk what it is.
Europe became a separate continent because of how technologically advanced (for their military) they were, for Africa, i think it was mainly the Europeans generalizing about cultures and ethnicities, and since Africa is only connected by a little bit of land that a canal also when through, the Europeans decided it was easier to say it was a separate continent.
