About the having been defeated. I think the US‘s experience in Vietnam is not comparable with being defeated in the own country and living in ruins afterwards. And Vietnam still has suffered far more than the US.
Agree. Have turned your own Country in Pixie Dust by an uncountable amount of bombs is a different experience than loosing "some' soldiers on the other side of the earth.
Not to mention that this happened not once, but twice, so it's really impossible to compare it to a war in which relatively few Americans died, and which happened on the other side of the globe
@@nichtthunder Depending on how far you go back, its more than twice. The Napoleonic Wars and the 30 years were equally destructive, to name some. The US only had one event of such scale with the Civil War, thus no necessity to number it or give it a more specific name :D

Das ist überhaupt nicht der Punkt. Viele mögen die USA nicht, weil wir in Deutschland zum einen in der direkten Einflussnahme Russlands. Hinzu kommt, dass wir in Deutschland vieles haben was wir anders machen, andere Ansichten haben etc. Sowas wie Sozialversicherung, Waffengesetze etc.

when the german talks about losing a war, I think he means getting his entire country conquered and then being occupied by a foreign nation for 4 years for west germany and roughly 45 years for east germany, America has never been occupied by a foreign power.
In all honestly, I think my answers would've been the same as most of these German people. I really love the nature you have in your natural parks, and that's a big reason why I would like to visit the US someday. But other than that, I don't have too many nice things to say or reasons I'd like to visit... Sorry, but that's a harsh reality that goes for probably a lot of Europeans, not just Germans.
The political divide in the US is insane and that's largely caused by the terrible political system that basically only allows you two choices. The glorification of the military and war is also not something to be proud of. That combined with poor social security systems, healthcare, prison rates, poor safety and education lead to an image that is not really that positive for most Europeans.
We don't dislike the people, but the systems that the people live in and have to deal with!!

As a Dutch person who also lived in Germany i would say: The nature in the US, classic muscle cars, some good movies and music, and that would be about everything i can think of.
16:48 Well the US was not occupied by Vietnam after they lost. Germany was occupied for 40 years by the allies. Also the US was not bombed into ruins by Vietnam. Every Week in average 4-7 bombs from WWII still been found. So the Vietnam comparison is still far away from what this interviewer means.

I do not get it....I am German and yes I did nothing but I am not proud in a way to show it. but sie USA have done so mutch terrible things from slavery to natives too but you are showing the flag in every corner. German here. Yepp, have been to the USA multiple times. Never lived for any longer period in the States. Yes, the average American is very friendly. However several political narcissists (*you know who I'm talking about, right?) couldn't have been voted into the highest political power in modern Germany. Those extremists I despise beyond measure. They look out only for me, myself, and I, and the rest be damned.
The destruction of WW2 here in Germany (and a lot of Europe) is still visible today. Not by actual ruins, but by whole streets of identical, simple apartment blocks built in rows as a stop-gap measure to alleviate the incredible pressures on the housing market right after the war. For example, more than 60% of all buildings in Hamburg were completely destroyed, and nearly all others suffered at least minor damage. Note: I am not throwing around accusations; Germany brought that destruction on itself. It is just an observable fact. Each and every year the explosive removal squads still have to remove duds during construction here in Hamburg. Often multiple times a month.
That's the level of destruction of defeat that was talked about. That decades later residual effects from the war so long ago still come to light regularly.
Basic thing you MUST realize when you get into this kind of stuff: it's generalization. It's never ever aimed at specific persons. So the "we" doesn't really apply... not for you, not for any of us.
So this is not really what "Germans" think of the USA... it is what SOME Germans think of the USA. Opinions will differ. Some for the better, some for the worse. Some more based on stereotypes or a general view of "politics" or "culture", some based on direct experience.
And it is exactly the same for your side. Some Americans will be rude, some will be polite, some will be healthy, some will be not.
We're all just humans.
And allow me one little comment that still might demonstrate the difference in attitudes - that you might not even notice, because you are a part of that culture - and why some people might not be that impressed with The United States of America.

Let us make a comparison.
The USA is about 27.5 times larger in area than Germany. It has just about four times the population.
Germany has about 83 million people. Germany is a bit smaller than California. California still has not even half the population. Germany is a bit more than half the size of Texas... and Texas doesn't have half the population of Germany. Germany is just about the size of Montana... and has 80 times the population. America is EMPTY compared to Germany, or Europe in general. And still, percentage-wise, Germany has more nature reserve areas than the USA.
You take all of your wealth, your land, your power, for granted... and wonder why some outsiders may look at your ways in a somewhat negative way...
Its NATO, and theirs no head boss, say the UK, France and Germany could get involved without the US, its an alliance.
ATM's are open 24/7. Our banks have a extra room (where the atm's stand) before you enter the actual counter room where the bank people work.

I think what the Americans don't deal with very well is the directness of many Germans. It's important not to take it personally. Americans tend to take it very personally and are easily offended. But that's not meant, it's just the cultural difference and Berliners are known for being loudmouthed and saying what they think. The Germans are like a coconut, hard on the outside, soft on the inside. And often many think that Germans are very rude, it may seem so at first glance, but if you ask them directly, Germans are very polite and friendly. In addition, northern Germans are different from southern Germans. We North Germans are known for not being very talkative and grumpy. South Germans tend to be happier and come out of themselves faster than we North Germans. There are also very strong cultural differences within Germany that have to be taken into account.
I personally like Americans. As a teenager, I lived in a town that had a US garrison and played computer games with American teenagers. For me it was a great time. I think we Germans could be a little more open and not always take everything so seriously. And they can learn that from the Americans. I'm sorry you're at war with us. USA have drive through for everything .... sorry to say... but you are a proof of being superficial sometimes... just rewind some seconds of the videos ....often you get the answers on your questions... losing a war.... ehm.... USA never got defeated at home .... you watched the videos about the fallen of world war II .... you should know what it means to lose a war with millions of dead civilians and soldiers... all over Europe .... this war was a big defeat for everybody.... so glad we have now the EU and live in peace together.
Not entirely sure about the ATMs in Germany, since I'm not German, but I got my first Credit Card in 1985 and my first ATM Card a couple of years earlier (remember those times, when a card could not be used in shops, only in ATMs?)
Anyways, it was Drive Trough ATMs, not ATMs.
BTW we here in Sweden don't really use ATMs anymore since nobody uses cash. I personally in general stopped using cash around the year 2000, and now many if not most shops and restaurants don't even accept cash, you pay with card or with the phone.
I don't even recognize what values our coins have, since there was a redesign of them 5-6 years ago
Regarding this interview, it should be noted that it was taken in Prenzlauer Berg, one of the most progressive "green" districts of Berlin. So it was not "the Germans" who were asked. If the same questions had been asked in some small villages in the east of the country, the answers would not have been as positive.
Nato is a group of allied countries and America is not on top of anything as everyone is one the same level.

Sorry, but this channel "easy German" collects opinions in a single town (Berlin). This is not representative for Germany. But I agree: at the moment, there is nothing in the USA, I like more than in other states.. I think, that a nation, that elected a person like Trust, can`t be trustful. But there are a lot of things, I do not like: food, beer, healthcare and school system, and a lot more.
An example for beeing suferficial? Look at picture of cities like Dortmund, Hamburg, Nagasaki, Tokio, Bagdad ect.Look at some of the villages in Bolivia after the war on drugs, and then on the destroid Cities in the US after the last 10 wars. Or aktually some cities in Hunkrain. You will see the difference.
I've always phantasized about going to the USA like Schwarzenegger and grew up on American movies, music, food etc. I've learned english listening to 2pac ditching school, not in school or from a dictionary. So we kind of love america, and hate america just as many people do. Love the people hate the gouvernment, hate the wars,.hate guantanamo bay, hate racism back in the day.

In Germany Building houses are very Expensive. also Buying Houses. The building that i draw the blueprint costs about 300.000-700.000€ In USA they can be way cheaper. The same is for buying a House. In Germany you will not find a house under 200.000€ that is not strongly damaged or scruffy.

Fortunately, this was not a representative survey. The same survey in another area of Berlin would be much more positive. For example the districts where the US army was stationed. I have always experienced the Americans as an enrichment. For example, the German-American folk festival was always great. :)

The thing with being proud is, not even my great grandparents were alive at the time and still i have to feel guilty like i executed someone myself. We cannot even decide in which country we are being born. I'm not responsible for what happened. I'm responsible that it will not happen again. So is every other human on the planet. Antisemitism is not bought by the nazis. Racism is not bought by the nazis. Every country got people that think like that and would want to repeat that. It's everyones responsibility that this never happens again.

I was a high school exchange student in California in 1986/87, visited my host family again in the 90s, had them over in Germany several times. My own daughter was invited and got to stay and travel with them for a month in 2016. So we're still very close, I love them very much, they're basically family to me.
That being said, I have to admit that I was somewhat reluctant to traveling back there for quite a while. Trump did make a difference, politics got in the way, still does. Daily news, as far as I follow, don't help either.
A few months ago I have decided to do the jump. The flights are booked, I am going to visit my folks this year. I will do some traveling by myself too and I'm definitely excited about it. Most of my family and friends here applaud that, but I get quite a few comments, such as "Wow, I wouldn't feel safe to do that."
Its actually very sad in Germany. Yeah, you have the "guilty" shame in Germany, that you should be ashamed for that what happended. In this is even until now, that politicians say that people should be feel ashamed for being German. Its actually very sad. That's in Berlin. Half of the city is East German, who have been told for 40 years that the US is bad and the USSR is good. And half of the youngers are drug addicts or migrants or both. I also think the first two guys, the one with the bald head and the one with the hat, he just disturbed them in an illegal transaction, that's why they're so annoyed.
The only federal state that costs the federal government more than it takes in. They don't get anything settled and are proud of it. They need 12 years to build an airport that is too small.
Why nature? US US is huge, the distances unimaginable and partly uninhabited. There is nothing like that here. No matter where you are here, you can always walk to the next house. I drove over a half day through North and South Dakota past a corn field. Nobody here believes that.
Why not proud? The world knows only 1 decade of dark german history, but it was 2000 years history and every country has a dark part of history. Do you know the dark part of yours? Slavery, for example, has been banned here since the 10th century, I believe. That's why we invented serfdom for. Slaves were no longer necessary.
Speaking of history - the US loose against Taliban too but the point is, not at your home but far beyond the ocean. That's a big difference.
Yes, the US meddles everywhere, but let's be fair, if they weren't spending a fair amount of their tax dollars on our security, we'd be standing here with our pants down. And who pays for the music also determines what is played. It's our fault that we can't do it alone. Of course, they don't do it entirely unselfishly, but who does that anyway?
