      Actually the Imperial system used here in the US predates the Metric system {it was used in the UK at the time of the founders}. We basically just held onto the Imperial system while the rest of the world moved on.

    And the thing that stops people from filling up and then dashing at the gas station is simply: cameras. Lots and lots of cameras.

    @Favour just a small hint - Uber is illegal in Germany the way you know it as well - it is considered circumventing workers rights protections and employment law.
    Uber exists in Germany, but only in a few select cities, and only as a conventional taxi service (with taxi licensing and all it entails or as a limousine service where you have to return to your base after every trip).
    The "gig economy" that is so big in the US is considered wildly illegal over here and there have been tons of lawsuits against companies that tried it.

    • @kuldan5853
      @kuldan5853 Před 8 měsíci +3

      Oh, and with three times as expensive, she's using $2.50 as the base - gas is ~$7 - $7.50 per gallon here

      You can also rent an electric car, most big cities have good coverage of charging stations.
      I am lucky enough that I can charge my car for free where I work, so I'm not really up to date with prices. But it's either way a lot cheaper than gas.

    Germany is a pretty diverse country so we expect to see wildly different clothing every day. As long as you are prepared for the weather, no one really cares what you wear except in fancy restaurants, the opera etc.. Most people speak English here as a second language, so if you are in doubt just ask.

    • @Groffili
      @Groffili Před 8 měsíci

      Most Germans have learned English in schools, but don't ever get to use or practice it later on. So even while they _technically_ could speak English, many people are reluctant to do so, because they think they are not good enough.
      So, yes, it is a trope, a stereotype, but like many of these, there is quite some reality behind it: Germans think it's worse to be bad at something than to be incapable of doing something.

    The imperial unit of measurement was invented by the British, but we realised that it was outdated and moved to the Metric. The US is so intrenched in your little bit of history that you refuse to change even the slightest thing even if it would make things better

  • @simonsaunders8147
    @simonsaunders8147 Před 8 měsíci +4

    It isn't so much that 'gas' is expensive in Europe, it is the fact that the US keeps the price almost artificially low. The US also doesn't pay an extra tax on 'gas' to help out the "green" policies that are far more widespread in Europe. US doesn't do "green" stuff and uses coal willy-nilly when it should in reality be reduced as close to zero as possible. The US doesn't do taxes or policies for the great of mankind.

    • @user-wu8bm9li6y
      @user-wu8bm9li6y Před 8 měsíci

      And don't forget: The European cars are usually much smaller and energy effiicent, so the price for kilometer nearly equals. There are many cars that would need no more than a gallon on 100 kms.

    • @simonsaunders8147
      @simonsaunders8147 Před 8 měsíci

      @@user-wu8bm9li6y No idea of the rhetoric for gallons per 100km as that is mixing two separate measurement systems which should never be done according to the maths I was taught. It is done in UK as miles per gallon (typically around 40 for a decent vehicle with good consumption). And then there's the definition of what a gallon actually is as the US people measure it short. 100km is around 62 miles so it would typically not make 100km on a British gallon.

    _"A lot of things in Europe feel like it's a perfect utopia type situation"_
    It's not. It's totally not.
    But maybe you need to realize that the USA can be, in some regards, even more of a DYStopia than good old Europe.
    This is the _one_ thing of "what not to do in Germany"... or basically everywhere else, and the one thing that makes people stand out as "Americans"... the in-your-face attitude that "the USA is the best at everything, how are you even able to exist anywhere else?"
    As for the "pump gas without paying". Well, it happens. Of course it happens. Gas stations mostly depend on cameras to deter thieves and have evidence in case of theft, but still only a quarter of gas theft cases are solved, and prosecution is often dropped because of the low value of the case.
    But it's still not a major crime spree, and the oil companies do calculate these losses in their pricing policy. Though that is not the reason for our high gas prices... that's on taxes. Taxes that are used (or at least are meant to be used) to maintain our road system. There is no free lunch.
    Perhaps we should change that system of "pump first, pay after". But there seems to be no motivation to do that. The current system works within reasonable limits, and people might not like the U.S. system. Different mentality.

      It's not that Germany is so different from the USA. The USA is so different from nearly all other developed countries.

    The Eurostar is the train between London and the mainland Europe (Paris, Bussels, Amsterdam) through the Channel Tunnel.
    In Europe we don't have as much stop signs as the US has. When there are traffic lights follow them. When the traffic lights aren't there there is a rule applied all over Europe 'Traffic coming from the right takes priority at all crossroads and junctions.'
    And the cars here in Europe are mainly manual shift gear not automatic gear.
    Berlin is in the North Eastern part of Germany.
    You can't do grocery shopping at train stations or gas stations but there are kiosk shops which sells pre-packaged sandwiches, cookies, snack chips, softdrinks, tea, coffee and so on.

    In two to three years you can learn German so well that you can get a few rolls from the bakery. After 30 years, most people can even manage a short conversation and use the articles correctly. Don't panic, most people here speak some English.
    Germany or EU in general is not socialist or communist. We currently have a high government quota, perhaps too high, but we are democratic and have a free market economy.
    The currency is not a problem. Dollar and Euro are almost the same. At least it's not worth counting. The advantage is that it applies in most EU countries. One meter is roughly a small step and all other measurements follow from that.
    USB is the same here, you only need the type C plug but I don't know how it is with roaming and free WiFi is difficult here. That exist here either, but not everywhere. Google maps works great here and takes you where you want to go.
    Gas is expensive but our cars consume three times less than US cars. For an upper middle class diesel car, one tank of fuel should last from north to south.
    Munich (Bavaria) to Berlin around 6 hours with car and around 4 hours with intercity train.
    And then the usual: Water and bathrooms are not free. On the other hand, is clean here and very few people are shot here and even fewer by the police.

    Actually, the metric system is younger than the US. The founding fathers stuck with the measuring system of the British empire (therefore Imperial System). The metric system was spread over Europe by the French Revolution decades later, and the US just never bothered to adopt it.

    Your phone should be ok. Many chargers can handle both voltages (but it is normally written on it). The input to the phone should be the same (USB-C / Lightning).
    Trainstations can be quite sizable in Europe (in my city there is a whole supermarket at the central station plus many other stores)
    Cash is not really necessary. Yes, there are still some stores that don't take card, but most stores do these days (at least in citys ... Countryside might be different). Since debit cards are more prevelant Creditcards might not be accepted (but you can use them at ATM's to withdraw cash)
    Cars in Europe tend to be much smaller than in the US so they tend to use much less fuel ... Also because our streets tend to be much smaller.
    You wouldn't steal gas since there are cameras that register your numberplate ... If you just drive off you will get caught (and since every citizens adress is registered they know where you live).
    An international drivers license can easily be aquired where you get your normal drivers license, but you still should check for different driving rules and street signs before trying to drive in another country (f.ex. in Germany there are no four-way stops, but if there is no sign the person on your right always has the right of way over you "Rechts vor Links", also traffic lights are on your side of the street and have street sings on them signalling which rules apply if they are out of service). Also most cars are still manual transmission.
    Btw. This all sounds far more complicated than it actually is.
    As a foreigner you can probably get travel passes or you buy a 49€ ticket in Germany (which allows you on most public transport, excluding long distance trains like ICE's or IC's), but it is on a monthly transcription.
    A good channel with indepth comaparisons is"Type Ashton", I can especially recommend their video about the German Healthcare system:
    czcams.com/video/017c4FA2zjM/video.htmlsi=tI1PKaoZGOjmKtAL
    Also this one explains "German Socialism" rather well from an American perspective:

    In the US you guys have 120V at 60hz
    In Europe we have 230V at 50hz.
    So it’s not really less powerful, just set up in a different configuration
    A lot of modern devices can handle both 120v and 230v. Things like laptop or phone chargers are usually made to handle it. But if you want to be sure check the labels on them.
    But things like hairdryers are more at risk of damage since they don’t go from AC to DC

    What would prevent us from stealing the gas... Well our car type, color, licence plate and our faces in combination with security cams.
    And you should'nt worry to much about getting robbed. I live here all my life (33 years) and never was robbed even in the worst towns. I lost my wallet three times and it was given back to me with everything inside. Yes i'm a very tall man but i don't know one girl/woman personaly that was robbed or worse at any time. And they walk home alone in the middle of the night from clubs or something a lot. Your crime is just out of controll it seems to me. Most crimes evolve out of poverty and need and we have a security system that prevents you from hitting the ground. Yes we have homeless people but they either don't know about this or they choose it themself to live on the streets.
