1:40 - Lindt chocolate is from Switzerland not from Great Britain.
4:19 - German is also the official language of Austria as well as of Switzerland, Luxemburg, Lichtenstein and parts of Belgium.
    “Keramik” means ceramic/ pottery.
4:32 - “Weihnachtslichter” means Christmas lights. “Geschenkideen” means gift ideas.
8:13 - For many Europeans Christmas isn’t manly about religion and more about spending time with family and friends while enjoying good food and the Christmas lights in the darkest time of the year. Because depending on where you are in Europe you have either none or very little daylight.
Although many people still visit Church on Christmas Eve, many of them aren’t even religious, like myself. So I would say that the religious aspect is still there but it’s not as relevant for most people. Historically Christmas is even more a pagan than a Christian festivity. And many Christmas traditions therefore have a pagan background.

Those buildings are made of sand stone not carved concrete. I moved to Germany from America over 40 years ago and love traveling from one Christmas market to another. Every year I try and go to at least 5 different ones.

The first markets organized in winter actually come from Germany. The Dresden Striezelmarkt is considered the oldest Christmas market in Germany (since 1434). The concept was already known in Munich in 1310 under the name Nikolausmarkt.

Strasbourg, France - The Christmas Capital
From the end of November, over a hundred Christmas markets transform Alsace into a land of milk and honey. The largest Christmas market in Europe takes place in Strasbourg. The first “Christkindelsmärik” was held in 1570.

7:45 They build a frame out of wood that has the shape of the arch. Then laid trapezoid brick on brick together.
When the arch was complete they could remove the frame.

Interesting in this is that apart from Liseberg, Sweden which is an Amusemant Park, all of these markets were in parts of the former Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation. So everything seems to be very influenced by German culture, which you can also see in much of the Architecture. It's nice to see that a wonderful tradition can be appreciated and continued, even after the "founders" are not there anymore (for often unpleasant and varied reasons).

Girl, the arches you were talking about are most likely centuries old, which means centuries older than concrete ever being invented!!!! Most likely these are built by masons in stone and bricks and covered with plaster. The arches themselves are sand stone, each meticulously hand-hewn and placed to hold up the floors above! All done without calculators and computer programs… For reference: the cathedral in Cologne was built over a period of 600 and then some years…!

At least here in Romanian, Christmas is first and foremost about religion and the birth of Jesus. Is so imbedded in tradition and folklore, most of the carols are about this, along with subject like "holy day" that brings the family togethere for peace and happynes, a lot of people fast up to the Christmas day, people are going to church. There are some, strange traditions that might seame pagan, that are celebrated on christmas day, they are to.. worn off the evile spirits and "the bad", along with traditions harbingers of the birth of Christ.

They're nutcrackers, not crackerjacks. And usually, the cities carry the electricity bills (possibly with the vendors chipping in; not sure about that, and it's all LEDs nowadays, anyway). They're sure to get it back by revenue from sales and general tourism.

Christianity is still the number one religion in most of europe. Not everyone is religious but there are many christmas carol concerts in churches, nativity plays showing the birth of jesus and christmas day church services. lots of non christians celebrate christmas too and then it is more of a day for santa, food and presents. the royal family for instance are always pictured going to church on christmas day, like many others.

Yes, but these are more like traditions people keep because they are used to, they don't actually believe in god. I met like 10 people max in my life and I know that they believe in god. Some of them switched churches several times, which is something absolutely not understandable for an atheist.

6:10 - Czech Republic is actually the most atheist country in the world. 😀 These traditions are disconnected from religion for a long time, people go to christmas markets for hot wine or mead and to have nice winter atmosphere, people don't go there because of some Jesus. 😀 And no, it's not because of 40 years of communism, other former communist countries are still religious, we are not because of our history full of religion wars, forced recatholisation and so on....
To find a hot mead is very hard in these days and christmas markets or historical events in Czech Republic are places where you can always find hot mead.
I visited Poland during Christmas for few times and I would say that it looks too much German or even American, they have exactly these scary kitschy statues like here 9:18, you won't find these things in Czechia.
I love gothic architecture, but beying from country where it is everywhere, I sometimes don't realize how shocking it is for Americans to see that, we have some castle or gothic cathedral on almost every hill.
12:09 "How long.....?" that's a good question, it mostly took several centuries to actually finish these cathedrals. For example St. Vitus cathedral in Prague was finished in 1920s!! It was under construction for almost 600 years. It's funny that you will change religion several times before you finish it. 😀 But some of these gothic looking cathedrals are actually fake gothic and it was build in 19th century already with modern technology. When it's made of red bricks, it's mostly 19th century fake gothic.
