We are two American's living in Germany and today we get to visit a German Christmas Market with you!
The magic of Christmas Markets in Germany is so incredible and we can't imagine not visiting them every holiday season now!
Today we head to Karlsruhe for a small but charming market and share our adventure with you. We think there may have been a second section of market now in hindsight, but that happens a lot in many towns and we still had a ton of fun!

Next year you should put the christmas market in Dortmund to your list. There is the regular one in the city but also a phantastic medieval market in the woods with a lot of fires instead of lights. Just magical! You pay for entrance but it is defenetly worth it!

You have to try Feuerzangenbowle (mulled wine with a rum-soaked sugarloaf lit above it) and Maroni (sweet chestnuts)! Perfect combo. Have a wonderful Christmas, you two

feuerzangenbowle is mulled wine? since when?
@@jdktoo Glühwein und Feuerzangenbowle basieren beide auf der gleichen Grundrezeptur: Rotwein, Gewürze, Zitrusfrüchte (üblicherweise Orangen). Sie unterscheiden sich nur minimal in den Details.
Mulled wine and "Feuerzangenbowle" based on the same basic recipe ingridients: Red Wine, Spices and Lemonfruits (most times oranges). "Feuerzangenbowle" is only a variation of mulled wine.

Apart from Bratwurst, for me Kässpätzle, Schupfnudeln (potato noodles with sauerkraut and bacon), Dinnele (spelled differently in the region) similar to Flammkuchen. The Christmas market at the Ravenna Bridge near Freiburg, but you have to book there!
We wanted to go the Freiburg market so badly! We actually looked at trying to book but the dates that were still available didn’t work so we definitely want to get on that sooner next year. And we will have to look for those at the next market! We actually saw the Schupfnudeln at this market and were so close to ordering it so we will def have to get it at the next one. Think we will do the food rounds soon 😋

While you Americans might typically roast marshmallows on a stick, in Germany we, esp. children, sometimes like to roast our "stick bread" over an open campfire.
If you are still living in Franfurt, you should check the medieval christmas market at the Ronneburg castle, as it has a special atmosphere and you can find some different food and drinks there as well.

I just had a baked potato on the Market in Dortmund. That was pretty delicious. I took the special sauce. I dont even know what was in there. But good.
Honestly we love baked potatoes!! We would love to try some special sauces unique to here. We will be on the lookout!
The Adventskranz is actually a Protestant tradition established bei Johann Heinrich Wichern. It was slowly adopted by Catholics (just like the Protestant invention of Christkind (by Martin Luther, to kind of make St. Nicholas redundant). Nowadays Catholics still hold on more to these traditions though, more secular folk have kind of adopted Weihnachtsmann (especially in the North). Catholics also traditionally only had a nativity scene display, not a tree.
Eat and drink always the local stuff, that’s the rule for everything in Germany. So look for the specialities in the area / city / village you are going to visit and eat / drink this.
Stockbrot (Bread on a Stick) was a Pfadfinder (Boy Scout) stable in my time.
The Ketchup was probably Curryketchup there are variants that are spicy.
Yes that’s a good idea! We will try and lookup what’s local at the next one we go to. That’s so cool about the Stockbrot! It was DELICIOUS!!! I think we may do another food video at some point and will have to include some of the different curry ketchups!
