Germany does not only consist of Berlin and the southern countries.
Northern Germany also has a lot to offer.
No matter whether Schleswig-Holstein with Flensburg or the beautiful Lübeck, Mecklenburg with the beautiful Schwerin and the Schweriner Castle, the Neuschawanstein of the north, as it is often called, or Lower Saxony with the Lüneburg Heath, the Harz or Hanover, or Hamburg with its great Harbor.
Yes, the landscape in the south is more spectacular, but northern and southern Germans are also very different from each other. It's not for nothing that, according to the Happiness Atlas, the happiest Germans live in Schleswig-Holstein and Hamburg.

The same applies to all parts of the country, regardless of where they are geographically located. Regardless of whether it is scenic or cultural, it is beautiful everywhere, even if there are less beautiful exceptions.
For example, I live in the Hessian Ried, on the edge of the Odenwald, and I don't have to hide, and there are so many beautiful, interesting corners, both historical and scenic. I don't have to move far to have a nice day ;-))

In Papenburg is the Meyerwerft, a shipyard which builds big cruise ships.
Flensburg is the largest town/city in the north near the border of Denmark.

The cologne cathedral can be visited for free and there are also services. But to go up the tower you need to pay. Actually, they started to build it in 1200 but then stopped for 600 years until in modern times they decided to finish it. They claim to have the remains of the three wise men in a golden box (that is the relic), but as you could imagine you need to believe.

you don´t pay for going to church, the pay is for going up the churchtower.
the Cologne Cathedral is an active church every day at 8 and sundays at 10 in the morning there is a church service.
As a World Heritage Site and host to the Shrine of the Three Kings( the 3 from the bibel when christ was born), Cologne Cathedral is a major attraction for tourists and pilgrims, and is one of the oldest and most important pilgrimage sites of Northern Europe.
And beside the cathedral is the roman germanic museum. The collections of the Romano-Germanic Museum are drawn from the archaeological heritage of the city and its environs, from prehistory to the early Middle Ages. Highlights are the largest collection of Roman glass in the world as well as outstanding collections of Roman and early medieval jewellery

A friendly advice: skip the Neu-Schwanstein visit. Its expensive to buy a ticket, it usually totally overrun with Chinese, and most time half of it is out of bounds for renovation work. Also, its not a real castle, just a toy palace of a lunatic bavarian king.
If you want to visit a true historic castle, go to the Wartburg. Built in the 11th century, its has tremendous historical importance. Next to other things, Martin Luther went into hiding and translated the bible into german there in 1521.
But there are many more historic castles in Germany - Neu-schwanstein is proably the least important of them all. Its only significance is perhaps, that the build almost ruined the bavarian state budget.

These are all destinations in the south of Germany (except the Cologne Cathedral). In my opinion, a very bad travel guide, which is more of a regional advertisement!
Many destinations (especially the Zugspitze, the Königssee or the Cologne Cathedral) are all overrun with tourists and, in my opinion, organized tourist rip-offs due to the high prices there. You don't get an impression of Germany like that, you see what you're supposed to see and what makes money.
There are buildings or museums all over the country that are well worth seeing and are not advertised. I would go there. And to smaller cities.

Which kind of means, that the german christmas markets are much older than the USA itself. There are plenty of them avaible: Really large ones and very tiny ones. All these locations are always overcrowded, and repeatedly presented from one presenter to the next. Although beautiful, there are many many places not so repeatedly reported and equally beautifull. The worst of all is Neuschwanstein, which is a fake "castle", built with modern steelframes , electricity and even telephones hundreds of years, after the (various) and different architural stiles were popular. Was not even finished, as King Ludwig overstressed the Bavarian states financial abilities for building it , so much, that state went virtually bankrupt. King Ludwig was declared insane and forced under psychiatric control and house arrest. Found dead in the nearby lake, unclear if murdered or drowned. But it was too late! Bavaria went bankrupt and had gotten submerged by former rival kingdoms and deleted from the maps as sovereign kingdom. Now it is a tourist trap. Shown are only the few completed rooms with horrendous entrance fees and long long waiting lines. Done in a few minutes.
By the way the "orange" roofs are tiles of baked clay, like bricks and the red color varies from place to place after the natural color of the clay. All around Europe.
And a church service don't cost you anything, but visiting the architectural parts do. Here a guided tour is a great recommendation.

Cologne cathedral: made by hand with hammer and chisel, finishing took 600 years ;-)
You have to pay climbing the tower, but the church itself is free, donations appreciated.
The relics of the three kings are (allegedly) the bodies of the three kings or magicians who visited and adored Jesus after his birth in the stable of Bethlehem. Stolen in Milan, Italy, during the cruisades.
Orange roofs in Bamberg: That's the natural color of the ceramic tiles.
Germany is the origin of reformation (Martin Luther etc), the south is, generally, catholic, the north and east mainly protestant.
Neuschwanstein is not an old castle but the phantasy of crazy king Louis II of Bavaria.
You have shown the most touristy spots of Germany, you would need more time than you as an American have to discover the little secret points.

the only animals you would have to be afraid of are bears and boars. (boars are the more dangerous of those both though)

"Bears went extinct in Germany in the mid-nineteenth century, with the last individual photographed in the Bavarian mountains back in 1835. Bears could only be found in captivity in Germany from then on and not a single one has been seen in the wilds." don´t hop into the bears enclosure in the zoo dude 😂 but you are right, boars are not to be underestimated, especially when they have children with them.
