Technical malfunctions are a rather rare cause for accidents in Germany. Every car has to go through an inspection every two years. They will check literally EVERYTHING in order to see if the car is really safe to be on the road. You won't see any totally run-down old vehicles that are about to fall apart and are only held together by duct tape. If you get cought w/o a valid inspection sticker, this will result in a hefty fine.

    She makes 2 mistakes:
    1. using the middle lane on a completely free highway.
    2. then to change to the 3rd lane as well.
All lanes are fast lanes. The regular lane is on the far right, all other lanes are for passing only.
I have seen the original video as well. A nightmare for any German.
The Autobahn is safer than the US highways. The German driver's license is very complicated and expensive. You don't risk it just like that.
In addition, the Autobahns are in good condition and the cars must be thoroughly inspected every 2 years.

    Dresden?
Germany is not as centralized as Spain, France or England, where there is one megacity (the respective capital), i.e. Madrid, Paris and London, which outshines everything. In Germany, everything is rather decentralized. The 84 million people in Germany (the second largest country in Europe after Russia) live in comparatively smaller cities or villages. There are only 4 cities with over a million inhabitants, and another 20 cities, each with around 500,000 inhabitants spread across the country (Dresden is one of them).

You can´t compare driving on a german Autobahn with driving on an american Highway. Drivers in Germany are much more disciplined. In general they drive on the right lane and only switch to the left when overtaking and giving way to faster cars by switching back to the right. Otherwise it would be by far too dangerous. Normally you can drive 160 km staying relaxed. Driving 200 km or more is a bit stressy and the most Drivers don´t do it. The average speed on the Autobahn is about 130km - even if there´s no speed limit. Keep also in mind that the fuel is comparable expensive in Germany and the consumption rises exponential with the speed. The higher fuel consumption is the reason why a general speed limit will propably come, it´s not because of safety reasons. The german Autobahn is one of the safest road systems in the world - by far safer than the american Highways...

There's a law in Germany that any vehicle which is supposed to drive on the autobahn must technically be able to reach at least 60 kmph (which is about 37 mph). So you can't ride a low- hp tractor, a scooter or a bicycle on the autobahn. Also, there are little cars that drive a maximum of 45 kmph (27 mph) that you are allowed to drive with a scooter license, mostly for city traffic, but you can't drive them on the autobahn either.

In fact, the highest speed ever driven on the Autobahn is 417 km/h, which is 259.11 mph. BUT this happened on the part of a wealthy entrepreneur from Austria with a Bugatti chiron in a relatively controlled drive with service vehicles for surveillance.
Nevertheless, the average driver is quite fast on the road. The cruising speed of many drivers is between 120 - 180 km/h, which is about 80 - 111 mph. In contrast to the USA, however, there are three main differences.
    1. The freeways are in much better condition than many US interstates. Where they are not, the speed is reduced significantly there. 60 or 80 km/h, i.e. 37 or 50 mph, is normal in secured construction sites on the motorway, at motorway junctions, driveways with heavy traffic, narrow lanes etc. the speed is often limited to 100 km/h.
    2. The vehicles in Germany are on average in a much better condition. This is ensured by the TüV, an internationally active, independent testing service provider. Every two years, vehicles in Germany have to undergo a safety inspection and a special exhaust gas inspection. Vehicles that fail here must be repaired or are no longer street legal.
    3. The driver's license in Germany is much more extensive, difficult and expensive to obtain. In addition to theory, an average of 25 - 30 driving hours are scheduled before you register for the exam. In addition, however, there is still the fact that Germans strictly adhere to rules, including traffic rules. This plus the experience advantage even at higher speeds is a clear advantage over American drivers, at least that is what many channels of US citizens living abroad report.

  • @samusin6324
    @samusin6324 Před rokem +44

Germany consists of several federal states, much like the U.S. Thats what those borders on the map are.
To clarify what they are saying about speed limits for different types of cars:
All cars/vans (lighter than 7.5 metric tons) can go as fast as they can go on an Autobahn section with no speed limit.
Semis (7.5 metric tons and heavier) on the other hand are never allowed to drive any faster than 80 km/h.
And yes, there is in fact a minimal speed:
Your vehicle must reach at least 60 km/h for it to be allowed on the Autobahn.
So your for example a typical tractor would not be allowed to drive on the Autobahn.
Edit: As @Holger Czubka pointed out, the weight limit for 80km/h top speed is 3,5 t not 7,5 t.
I have been passed by vehicles between those wheight classes so often at speeds up to 160km/h I was quite sure it was legal for them to do so.

What most people dont have in mind talking about the speed on the autobahn ist that its well maintained because a small hole in the ground means maybe nothing at 70 mph but is another ballgame at 100 mph or even something like 150 or more. Side effect of this is that german cars are built from people over here that have always to keep in mind that people will drive that fast if possible. So they built cars a bit safer then needed because that and try to make the handling good enough at those speeds that even new drivers should not crash straight away. A car in germany ends up like this: It can go 150 mph, it will go 150 mph so we have to make sure people wont die driving 150 mph

  • @killerhank83
    @killerhank83 Před rokem +4

I am from Sweden and even though I live here in Sweden, Germany and the Netherlands are relatively close and easy to drive to. So it is quite common that you, like me, have driven on the autobahn from time to time.
In Sweden, the current maximum speed limit on the highways is 120 kmh (120/1.6093≈74.5 mph) but the most common speed limit on the highways I think is 110 kmh. The actual and general traffic rhythm I would say is around 130 kmh but staying just under 30 kmh over the speed limit is a fairly common procedure as the limit between getting a fine or having your license revoked for at least 2 months (if the speed limit is 30kmh or below so, is the "magic limit 20 kmh), but I would say that 160 kmh is a pleasant and not entirely unusual speed. On the autobahn I'd say 180 kmh is comfortable with a modern standard car.
Regardless of the speed, it is important not to drive aggressively and to adjust the distance to other road users according to speed. If you do that, you endanger neither the safety of others nor your own.
In another video about the autobahn, you bring up the fact that even though the autobahn has free speed, there are severe penalties if you drive fast and/or recklessly and cause an accident.
Just like in Germany, and certainly also in the USA, Sweden takes the occurrence/degree of carelessness into account when calculating penalties for traffic offences.
Driving license suspensions in Sweden are based on a practice which means that you weigh both the circumstances surrounding the crime and certain personal circumstances, such as the need for a driving license at work and whether you have previously had a driving license suspension. This means that you can get a "discount" and have your driver's license revoked for a shorter period of time if you have a great need for it (for example at work) and if you have previous complaints, you may instead be punished more severely.

I think most Americans think that no Speedlimit equals no rules, but that is not true! In Europe getting a driver's license is expensive and takes time. As part of the process you have a min of 12 theoretical hours of theory, min 12 hours of mandatory practical driving lessons, pass a theoretical and a practical test (both are NOT easy), participate in a 6 hours mandatory first aid course , make a see test, if you need glasses it is mentioned on your driver's license, again mandatory. Most of us end up spending 2 months and 2-3000 Euros on a driver's license.
Once you have a car, you are legally required to get your car checked every 2 years for functionality, cars over 5 years normally cost 1000-1500 euros (repairs needed to maintain functionality). If the car does not pass and you don't get the issues fixed, no more driving in that car!
Lastbit not least, car owner =insurance for damage done to others. Again mandatory. Depending on your age and how much damage you have caused in the past somewhere between 300 and 700 euros a year!
Tax on your car to maintain the roads (depending on the size of your engine), 100 -500 Euros a yeat
And then you can drive with no speed limits........
We have freedom with responsibility, and the freedom has a price, so it is valued!

If the vehicle does not pass the usual examinations, it will not be registered for road traffic. And may not be moved at all, as long as the defects are not eliminated! For this reason, vehicles in Germany also do not lose tires if they drive faster than 125mph. By the way, overtaking on the right side is forbidden in Germany ;-)

Running tanks or entire divisions hundreds of kilometers on the highway costs far too much fuel and wears out the material. Something like this is still loaded onto trains today. Every car or motorcycle is allowed to drive on the highway as fast as the car can drive. So not only Lamborginies or Porsches are allowed to drive fast but also Renaults.only for trucks speed limits apply. In addition, there are strict rules on the highway that must be observed. Anyone who thinks as a tourist can simply let the wild animal out on the highway should not be surprised to be severely punished. They ispect your car completely as another commenter said and any "failure" will be repaired, after telling you about it. As this don´t take hours, you sometimes can stay with your repair shop and after inspection you get a little plaque on your car so every cop knows, that your car is okay and when the next inspection will be.
If you drive over the speed limit and act suspiciously Police will pull you over, in case you are under influence of alcohol or drugs.

No car or truck or Motor bike is allowed on the Autobahn if it cannot reach 60 kph, if you drive slower than that you have to have a good reason for that or you will get a ticket because it's dangerous to the other Autobahn users because of the speed Difference, so the slower drivers stay right and those who over take move to the middle lane or even further to the outside lane, but always keep an eye on the rearview mirror for those going faster and move over as soon as possible to the right, if you block a lane and the Autobahn police see that then you get a ticket, without a German driving Lizenz you have to pay mostly on the Spot, that depends from where you come from, the police don't pull everyone over for going too fast 10 or 20kph is normal but if you are doing something dangerous like tailgateing or over taking on the right hand side then get ready for a large fine, there is a point system here as well, and if you lost your Lizenz for certain thing's you may have to take a test again which is very expensive, so thats the idiot test with multiple questions of the highway Code then a practical test after to get a new Lizenz, so it could cost just the test 2 thousend dollars or more, then comes the fine and lawyer or plead guilty then it's cheaper, then comes your insurance it could go back to beginners and that can be very expensive but thats just Germany, if you speed in the swiss then you can lose your car and they will crush it in some cases, and the fines are based on your earnings, the richer you are the more expensive it is, a few years ago a man drove well over 100 kph too fast in a 50 zone, his pay was a couple of million per year so he had to pay so many days from his wage from that year, then they crushed his Ferrari or Lamborghini, cannot remember, so the Moral to the Story is drive safe.

oh yes, there is no minimum speed on the Autobahn... BUT... it is forbidden to impede traffic by driving too slowly. and there are signs that can prescribe a minimum speed on certain sections of the route

7:36 his explaining could be misunderstood. There are a bunch of vehicle types they have an all over speed limit, and anonther bunch have not. So there are 4 mainly types of Vehicle limits:
max. 80 kph Semis and Trucks; Cars with Trailer, Bus with Trailer
max. 100 kph Cars with trailers witch have a special coupling and brake, Busses like Nightliners
No overall Limit: vehicles up to 3,5 tons max gros weight, motocycles, quadbike, side by side, vans...
    Depending on rules:
RV(Camper, Motorhome). If its max gros weight is up to 3,5 tons no speed limit like a car, over 3,5 tons 80 kph like semis.
There are much more, but you dont need to know them, its only for special use like Farming Tractors, Fire Department, Military, Police, Ambulance...
A Car could be a lil 2 Seater Smart, damn expensive Maybach, superfast (and also damn expensive of course ;-))Koenigsegg Agera, Chevy Pickup Truck, or Polaris Side by side 4 Seater Buggy.
10:10 Yes. On the Autobahn its only allowed to drive on, if your vehicle has a minimum topspeed of 60 kph (~37 mph), so the minimum speed you have to drive is 60 kph if traffic allows it. But the minimum speed is from an older law of the autobahn rules, it isnt smart to drive that slow. The minimum speed to drive witch is kind a clever, except there is a limit, is the speed of trucks and semis at 80 kph.
11:30 If Traffic allows it? Just Flat Out XD but think about, Gas is much more expensive in Germany. Today it was good/low at 1,68 €/l Super (95 Octane, like Mid Grade in US) about 6.71$/gal. Or you have an electric car, 0,60-0,70 €/kWh at Tesla Supercharger for example.

This frame story is presented with real actors in dialog with puppets.

Your car with the diamond sign must be a french car from the manufacturer Renault I assume . Yes to drive a speed up to 220 km per hour is risky but in Germany each car must be proofed by law every two years from an independent technical association which is also here TÜV. The requirements of TÜV are very strictly and with the lowest small failure your car must be repaired within four weeks and than TÜV proof your car again. So Germans cars are mostly in a very good technical condition and a failure of a complete wheel lost on the "Autobahn" is very less.
I am sure if somebody from the USA turns with his car to Germany for living here and bring his own american car overboard will totally fail with the TÜV

And don't forget to go on the Autobahn with a full gas tank.
If ran out of gas while on the Autobahn...oops, another german rule (but make sense)..
"A fine of 70 euros and 1 point in Flensburg must be reckoned with if drivers are stranded on a motorway or motor road with an empty tank. According to the road traffic regulations, stopping on the motorway due to a lack of fuel is an avoidable traffic obstruction and is therefore prohibited."

Actually Germany in a way can be compared with the USA since the USA is a Federal Union of separate states, just like Germany is a Federal Union of separate states. In fact the Federal country of Germany is there to have one foreign country policy and because of other federal laws, just like the Federal country of the USA is. So the borders within Germany basically are the separate states you're looking at. More or less is within the Federal country of Swiss and their Local Kantons (like States), and even in the Netherlands the local Provinces have partially their own government. For all I know most countries have these kind of separate local States, Counties, Kantons or Provinces with a local jurisdiction of some kind.
