From Broken To Breaking: The Colorado Trail FKT

  • From a nonathletic adolescence, bed-ridden injury, job loss, and being forced to drop out of college, Mike McKnight didn't enter the running world in your typical way. Regardless, he would go on to break records for the 500-mile Colorado Trail. Even after a stolen Salomon shoe incident, and only 5 hours of sleep during the week-long journey.

I’ve been broken for the past decade and then I burned out 36 months ago and then I burned my whole sales career and then tragically my marriage to the ground in Jan ‘20. This film meant a lot to me. Thanks for suffering on film in this grueling accomplishment Mike. I hope this is the start of me losing 100 pounds and beating my own food addiction. Hopefully someone else too. Thanks to the film producer and your crew and guests. Your a real savage Mike McKnight!

Running is a good thing that keeps you going. Can't say what, but something's up with my current mental health having some negative and dark thoughts etc lately but training, xc-skiing, running and eating healthy gives that "you gotta keep on pushing"-feeling. About to go for a run in the pouring rain, heavy winds and 50°.
Good luck to you sir and keep on going!

@@thelowcarbrunner7689 Yep I know what you mean, in 2014 I did the last time the 50 miler at the Black Hills 100 was an out and back run. I bonked not thinking that hiking poles could be used at the race and they were needed, it rained all night. I stayed chill when I could not run the last 10k of the run and having to race walk, hiking/walking hurt so I had to do a race walk where I had contact at some point before the other foot came down and was singing without music earbuds to keep mysef going. Before the bonk when I ran I ate a 1/2 sized PB&J at each station I could find this so all but one along with GU or for some the Gatorade Prime square things for all but the final run station where I started walking as that station is 10k from the finish but they forced me to take the full sized PP&J I was going to toss 3/4ths into the garbge as the bread was way dry so I had to race walk with the food until out of there sight and toss that PB&J off the side of the trail. I do better now that I have found Honey Stingers/waffles and original flavor gel so I am not suffering as much, however I might Use or get one of the low caffeinated gels from Honey Stinger knowing if a race does not have a caffeinated cola at the stations to help me stay awake during the night or keep off the caffeine headache of the early morning going into next day of no Coffee/Caffeine. I can only skip fully 12--24 hours somewhere in there of Caffeine. The Waffle Stingers are what I use in longer events beyond 50k that are on roads/20 miler on up on hard trails along with the gel where needed in parts where I can't handle a soft Cookie like thing due to poor fluid intake or am using both at the same time say a really hard event/section of an event.

This Colorado FKT doc is up to a high standard and I am totally stoked to watch it. Awesome work!

Michael, I love your story, like you I was eating and drinking a lot of processed foods and alcohol in college. I wanted to feel better spiritually and physically. Therefore, I quit drinking fifteen years ago and took up ultra running. I cleaned up my diet with an Adkins low carb approach and will be running my 61st ultra marathon. I have lost 52 pounds and I am much happier and blessed in all areas of my life.

I’ve been binge watching Vinnie and Anna’s video podcasts lately as I get into the NSNG lifestyle. (I’m getting my blood glucose to a newer lower level after coming down with Diabetes Type 2 less than 2 months ago. My first A1C was 11.7 so I’ve had to make changes. I saw your July discussion with Vinnie tonight, and then watched the entire movie in one sitting. He’s right it goes by fast, yet the pace is just right. I teared up at the part where your wife tells us she’s running the last leg with you, and then again when you all headed out and arrived and you tapped the sign. I’ve never seen anyone push themselves quite as hard as you did consistently through the trail. You are blessed with exceptionally wonderful friends. It was a whole little community effort your whole team did. Wow. Imma send this to a friend of mine who lives in Colorado. She’d totally dig the human spirit story here. I’ll share it to Facebook too, I have some of my husband’s family lives in Colorado. Leave it here for a while. CZcams is a great spot for absolutely everyone to be able to find it easily. Also, your watch time is gonna be fantastic. I could also see this doing well next to Vinnie, and Nina’s movies on Amazon (maybe some Amazon Prime Deal or something). It’s that well shot/edited/written.
Background, I ran Cross Country in High School yet one year we didn’t have enough girls for our own team, and the next year we did.
Granted that was decades ago, but still, in the fall when the air is just right it reminds me of the running on the grass.
You’ve done well, enjoy your sweet family and the trails.

That was truly amazing and inspiring. As a "young" trailer of 41 years, only discovering LCHF diet, you sir, give me a lot more motivation to pursue my goals. Looking forward to see your next FKT attempt. 🏃‍♂🤘
