Where Do All The Stolen Cars Go?

  • It's 2am and you hear SMASH, then the start-up of a familiar engine. Someone’s stolen your car.
Everyone knows the police are usually too busy to help you with stolen cars, so it's up to you to find it. But more often than not, that’s it - you have no hope in finding it, your car is gone.
But where does it actually go? I had the same question, where DO all the stolen cars go? Let me explain.
But first, let's address the fact that the chances of actually having your car stolen today are pretty low. There are about 287 million cars on the road in the US, and only 810,440 cases of vehicle theft in the US in 2020, and 89,400 cases in the UK. That’s about 246 thefts per 100,000 people in the US and 132 per 100,000 in the UK.
So the odds of your car being stolen today are pretty low, but never zero.
⭕ Why New Cars Keep Failing this Crash Test
    • Why New Cars Keep FAIL...
⭕ How Hot Hatches Got SO FAST
    • Why Hot-Hatches are No...
A chop shop is an illegal garage that profits off selling or repurposing the parts off stolen vehicles. Often run out of a legitimate storefront, an expert chop shop can strip an entire car down to its frame in less than three hours. If your car is unlucky enough to find itself in one of these, chances are you’ll never see that car again.
What’s mad, is that cars are typically worth more as parts than as a whole. While a junk car may be worth only $500 in scrap metal, chances are the individual parts on that car are worth thousands. And chop shops know this.

My mother's car was stolen a few years ago. The thing is she lives in Berlin and you can get to Poland in an hour. After passing the border your car is probably gone forever. It wasn't even a luxury car. It was a freaking VW Polo but it was fairly new and a great transmission wich was the best you could get back then. I think thats probably the reason the car was on the wishlist. Oh yeah and the car wasn't recovered.

I had a mint condition Mercedes Benz 190E 2.3 Cosworth Manual stolen from my garage in 2008. The police in Michigan were less than helpful. They actually told me that "filing a false police report is a serious crime" so I went and had to see a lawyer who got my insurance company to cover most of the value of the car.

Then hold the receiver near the car and it can unlock and start the car(the car thinks it's the key). Then you drive the stolen car back to your shop and use a OBD2 code and make a new key and BOOM you got yourself a new car.

While speaking with the Scotland Yard officer he stated he was calling about high price cars being stolen in SoCal that were ending up in Saudi Arabia. Apparently they were being driven straight to the docks and loaded onto ships.
In another case, a Canadian Mountie called with a recovered vehicle stolen out of my city. He stated the vehicles, which were usually truck, were being placed in the back of a tractor-trailer and brought to Canada where they usually ended up on a ranch.
A third was our citizens who couldn't pay for the vehicles would drive them across the boarder into Mexico. The only problem with this is that every vehicle's license plate is photographed when driven across the border, along with a photograph of the driver. It made for some bad days for those citizens when we told them they were being arrested for filing a false police report.

@@yacinealg152 well, if you're a politician running for election (or reelection) and you're courting a certain demographic, if you look and learn that that demographic disproportionately commits acts of scumbaggery like car theft, making crimes like that less illegal can make them more likely to vote for you. among other reasons. the eu just seems bound and determined to at every turn get in the way of or impede law abiding, tax-paying, property-owning citizens, and actively helping or rewarding animals for being absolute animals : /

Once I prove that the car is mine, that's that. Infact, this "honest" buyer should be charged with handling stolen goods. You don't just buy a car like a loaf of bread in the supermarket. You can smell a problem with the transaction from a mile away, and if you can't, then you need the lesson so that you never do that again.

As I live in Latvia, I speak both languages - English and Russian (plus a couple more) - so I sometimes, especially when after heavy drinking or felling extraordinarily depressed - watch Russian youtube channels. There are many of them on the subject of debunking car salesmen who try to sell stolen, crashed or otherwise dubious (that's SUS in US English) cars. Believe me - there are A LOT of such channels and they seem to thrive (look up Максим Шелков, АВТОТУТ, etc., etc.) Anyway. Greetings from Latvia - and I think I need to go install some antitheft device in my beloved audi. Edited: jeeeez, youtube fonts did a nice one on the name of that channel - if transcribed in English, the closest would me Maksim Shelkov - but there are dozens more on the same theme.

My mum had her 1987 Nissan Micra stolen in... well.. 1988. Thieves didn't get very far as they crashed shortly after. Why the presumed joyriders thought stealing a car with a measly 54bhp and a suspension made from jello was a great idea, I will never fathom. Those old Micra K10s can be driven relatively hard but will happily toss you in a ditch and possibly kill you at the slightest mistake, they're essentially built from tinfoil. At least the replacement car had colour matched number plate lights.

I bought a 2010 Porsche panamera turbo from a dealership in the Netherlands. I didn’t pick it up straight away as I had to move to the UK for a couples months for work. I bought the car in January 2022 and told the dealer that I would pick it up in August. To my surprise the dealer sent me a cryptic email 4 months later saying that I had picked up my car. I wasn’t even in the country. I came back to The Netherlands to check on my car but the dealership wasn’t even there. I sadly lost my car😢.
