  • Hondo Underwood is a former car thief, and now shares information with the public about how to avoid falling victim to theft.
Underwood speaks with Business Insider about methods of breaking into vehicles, such as relay theft. He offers insights into how chop shops operate and how organized crime groups conspire to transport stolen vehicles across the border to Mexico. He also notes the models of cars he stole, including Chevrolets and Ford pickup trucks, and discusses the realism of car theft in movies and games like "Gone in 60 Seconds" and "Grand Theft Auto."
He stole hundreds of cars in and around Denver between 2016 and 2017.
A Marine Corps veteran, he was ordered to complete a rehabilitation program by a Colorado Veterans Treatment Court. He now works in the construction industry.

This guys blames everything else except himself. The drugs did not make you a criminal, nor did some videogame. You made those choices and they were wrong. In between he constantly admits that it was actually really fun to do, he loved the rush.

I think you are reading too much into it. He didn't blame drugs, he merely pointed out that drug use leads to crime, which everyone knows. As far as saying it was fun, in order to tell his story he has to take his mind back to those days, and yes, I'm sure there was a rush to it and probably fun at the time. It's very clear he now fully recognizes how bad it was to to do that stuff.

What justice do you want? Just because he says he stole all those cars doesn’t mean he just gets tossed in prison. The State would still need evidence so as to charge and convict him, which definitely isn’t going to happen when the cars are long gone.
The fact he did serve some time, and went to drug treatment, and went on to help the police seems like a good outcome to me.
The goal with any career criminal is to rehabilitate them so they can be normal law abiding members of the community, which he is now. Why would you want to toss him back in prison where he would beat yet another burden on societal? Prisons are extremely expensive to operate.
The old adage is it’s cheaper to pay for someone to attend an Ivy League school, including an apartment and all necessary food and supplies, than it is to incarcerate them.
      Justice was served here.
By the way, the tear drop can mean MANY things. The whole “proof of kill” is a west coast gang thing. Elsewhere it means prison sentences, or a loved one’s sentence, etc etc.

Thats what most vets are looking for. When you enlist, it's all about your brothers and sisters to your right and to your left. When you get out, you're all on your own unless you go out of your way to maintain connection or find another community to be a part of. It is a major reason why many veterans self-delete, the lonliness turns to depression and substance abuse.
I personally hate the argument of blaming video games for real life actions, but I think GTA is the closest example to put the blame on as it depicts the real life actions of many people that live that life and the game glorifies it. I haven't had the urge to steal or kill because of a game, but if he says it's what motivated him, who am I to say "no it didn't". Obviouslythe need to feed a drug habbit and his poor mental state definitely played more of a role in his life choices.

Just need to point this out: the no-chase policy for the police still had him get arrested by 32 cops just 1 year after he began stealing cars and 0 (zero, not one) people were injured or killed by him fleeing or by the police needlessly chasing him. Car theft is not murder and no one should die, especially as a side effect, from car theft. No-chase policies are basic human decency that treats innocent people as more important than bits of metal and fiberglass that don't have families who will suffer for potentially decades after they're gone. Police are supposed to protect the public, not run over children during a high-speed chase or send hundreds of bullets flying in every direction in a residential area when a car thief spooks one of the cops by scratching their crotch.
