Forgotten Roads | Ep.1 Big Sur | Hammerhead

- Forgotten Roads is a self-supported and self-filmed 3 part series documenting gravel rides in California. We hope to inspire you to get out and explore the world by bike. Thanks to Hammerhead for supporting this series and making navigating these new routes a breeze with the Karroo 2 (linked below).
In the first episode Alex and I head up the coast to Big Sur after learning one of the more popular camping and recreation areas has been closed to cars for almost a year. After a fire devastated the area and later on a heavy storm compounded the area's problems, the only sealed road up to the ridge, Naciemento Ferguson Rd., was forced to close for repairs. Our loop had us coming up a long, steep and dusty dirt climb before riding across the ridgeline and finally descending to the ocean down Naciemento Fergusson at sunset. We threw in a few side missions along the way for good measure. You can take a look at the route on Strava below.

battery is starting to go on my old elemnt bolt. hammerhead prob in my near future.
This is exactly what I do, but with running. A few months ago on a camping trip I had all these routes planned out. Little did I know some of them went through private property, and some of the summits were grown over. I still went through!
Sometimes you gotta do a little hop, skip, and jump to keep the good times going.
I got a gravel bike last summer after moving out to the burbs. It's easy to say that it has really changed the way I think about things in exactly the way Mr. SAFA describes: the BEST way to feel like you're getting away from civilization even though you're just on a day trip. LEGENDS.

I gave up on gravel since I couldn't find any tires that would hold up. Maybe it's just me since I was ripping Mtb trails but I always ended up having to fix a tire out on the trail.

I used to ride down the Big Sur coast on the 1 a couple times a year on a road bike. The route from Monterey to San Simeon remains one of my all-time favorites. Awesome, rolling terrain, incredible views, and if you're lucky, beautiful marine wildlife sightings - I had the honor of seeing humpback whales, condors, and sea lions on multiple occasions. Thanks for the video, Brian. This one took me back!

Did this route two years ago, so this brought back some great memories. Even remember that Petrol station in Cambria :) Saw my first whale when we descended back down to PCH. Tough, but perfect ride. Of all things we rode it the other way round.
Going the other way gives you a easier way up, although it would still be pretty intense haha. Not a bad direction, the big dirt descent at the end would have been fun too.

I love this idea. There are truly amazing landscapes in California, and people who don't agree just haven't seen enough of the state yet. The amount of landscape variety is amazing and I love the idea of capturing these pristine untapped trails. Good stuff

Always fun to just not over plan and be curious when a intriguing road beckons. Here in Canada been doing that in my backyard (Northern Quebec). Big Sur is nice, went for a visit in 2019.
