I return to San Francisco and try some new steep streets with @Ejstrainingcamp and my new friend, Cole. As always, we saved the hardest street for last. I don't know if I'm ready for this one.

Yesss! Thanks for including me in this I had a blast with you! Can’t wait for the next one!
Great riding with you dude! I’m gonna have to start doing a million squats a day or something so I can keep up next time 😂
I just rewatched the first San Francisco video yesterday because I was missing it. Glad to see more of this content back!!!!
Your videos make my day. Thanks for finally editing this 🎉 (took ya long enough 😉)
Thanks for ripping my legs off and introducing me to the worst climb of my life… so far 🫡
Sweet looking Polygon! I almost never see any out in the wild.
It’s awesome to see the progress, beating Cole and EJ in some of this is awesome dude! That’s clearly an “above-average” 😉
MORE STEEP STREETS LETS GO
I liked that you got EJ in on your steep streets ventures.
😊
I am so impressed with your channel Mitch. You're living my dream and I'm thankful I get to watch it. Ride safe and be well.
Thank you for watching!
EJ has come a long way since being an overweight film editor. Hats off to him!
Love your channel! Keep 'em coming!
No way, the mitch boyer EJ Collab is here!!!
Hey, Mitch! We have only 10% to 15% hills here and can't even imagine how to climb these ones you did. The maximum I did myself is 1000 ft 15% climb in 1 minute, but I felt I gonna fall. Your videos are so inspiring. I am not even close match to you in physical condition, but it makes me train more 💪
Placing a bet on the secret weapon to get up those climbs without putting his foot down: learning wheels.
😂😉
Yesssss. Welcome back!
Amazing video production skills, you got me hooked
Im going to hit some of these next week, thanks for the motivation 😈
Some impressive numbers are being put out here. Thanks for the video Mitch. I am happy I am seeing 400 Watts for a minute on my trainer in the gym.
"Laughs in dead man" got me so good! Great efforts in SF!
this gives good vibes
You big stud
Way to dig deep!!! That was awesome!!
outstanding video! I love watching videos of my old stomping grounds.....back in the day, 70's-early 80's, we had to do all those climbs in 44x25 (and you were consider a whimp running a 25). Probably why I've had several knee surgeries now that I am an old man. Lived on Broderick right after college. Beautiful place to live. BTW - The Ritte looks amazing!!
You're friends with Phil Gaimon and he is (or at least was) sponsored by a GIS company that could potentially tell you exactly the grade of these and other climbs.
Good idea!
Eh gps based grade is kinda wonky still for short steep hills. Just get a grading tool.
Recently moved from SF hill top near Broderick to NY. Finally can ride fast flat, but do miss that brutal opportunities to conquer the 20-30% streets to get back home
Thank you, Mitch!
Congratulations, Tall Seb Vettel!
Bravo!
I think what really stands out to me in this video besides the wattage output is heart rate comparison. The stronger riders have a noticeably lower HR than Mitch. Kudos to all participants though this looks brutal.
this is sick
I bought my cycling kit Insta360 x4 because of you Mitch, back when you were doign X3 reviews bombing the LA hills. It was time to get my own. Love this series man
That’s awesome! Let me know how it goes, and send me a link to one of your videos once you get the hang of it!
Christmas Tree Hill is a really fun one to build pain tolerance. If you've made it up without stopping you know you can do it again. Super helpful to be able to wrap your head around the pain and push through it. Makes efforts during races just a hair easier.
cant wait for the europe videos : )
W vid, yessir
Nice, looks fun. Should make a hill climb event doing these. 😎
daaamn yall are jacked!!
Mauna Kea when 🤭🤭 (great work, I couldn't even slowly walk up these lol)
It’s definitely on the list!
Also as a recommendation, you should take a trip out to Lake Tohoe. If you do the full Lake Tahoe circuit its ~70 miles with ~5500 ft of climbing but what makes it a real challenge is the starting elevation is ~6500 ft. The Emerald Bay climb is the highlight of route and I think is one of the best views in the country. If you do the whole route it's called "The Most Beautiful Bike Ride in America." If you go and only do one climb, do the Emerald Bay climb, it's incredible. Vegan Cyclist has a really good video on the Tahoe ride.
If you're back up here, take a little sortie to the east Bay, we have a couple of famous climbs (namely Marin Ave).
"streets existed long before cars"
yeah most people don't know that roads were initially created for bikes. great content btw
Come to okinawa, alot of steep hills. Some even have speed bumps for pedestrian incase you cant stop walking down it. There like a hand rail side ways you have to shuffle through.
I'm from Cork Ireland. I'd love to know which hill you are talking about. I live at the bottom of knockrour west (The Beast). But there's many more to choose from.
Well done! What were the downhills like???
Usually pretty slow because there were stoplights at the bottom of each block 😂
that attaquer long sleeve looks sick
It’s one of my favorites!
Mitch found something different than YT everyone, can't pinpoint it, but hope he makes a billion dollars riding his bike
Thanks Mike! A billion is way too much for me tho haha-I’d be happy just to afford a modest house in LA ✨
W video
Go to Madeira off the coast of Portugal! I've heard there's a ton of steep streets there and many of them are quite long
How different would these climbs be on a MTB with insane gearing, like a 54 tooth cassette?
I walked that 36% street on my SF vacation with my dog and no prior knowledge as to what I was getting into. Just a complete surprise 😂😭
They sneak up on ya!
Maybe I missed it in a previous video, but what gearing are you riding with on these type of hills?
I had a 46/33 chainring and 10-33 cassette for this video
@@MitchBoyer amazing. Thanks, great power output and legs! Keep it up.
Come to the UK and do hardknott pass, you will love it!
It’s definitely on my list!
@@MitchBoyer there are plenty of the other great steep roads here, my personal lesser known favourites are Boltby Bank in the North York Moors and Park Rash in the Dales. Hope to see you in the UK soon!
I think Id need my 30 front 51 rear gear for that. Damn!
How do you do that wahoo overlay? Looks cool!
It’s a combination of using the Telemetry Overlay app and custom graphics I built in Photoshop and DaVinci Resolve
@@MitchBoyer cool!
I didn't know Fillmore was so difficult XD. I've ridden up and down it many times, and it doesn't really compare (at least for me) to something like 14th or 15th street up to the Randall Museum (probably because when I get to 14th/15th it's usually the end of my ride).
It’s not crazy steep, but if you race up it, it’s long enough to hurt 😂
I was in a part of queens, NY yesterday and man I didn’t even made 5 feet 😂😂😂
Cole wears his shorts at the right length 👏👏👏 none of this just above the knee stuff; the modern fashion sucks!
Not shure but did you mixed % with *?
You must be in Europe right now with Cam. Enjoy the TdF mate. Leave the videos for later! 👍
Great video, except the area of a sphere= 4π steradians, which is approximately 41,253 square degrees. So the camera should be the "Insta 41,253" (not 360).
On climbs this steep you can get a very nice estimate of gradient by using power. Assume a coefficient of rolling resistance of around 0.5% (this adds to the effective grade). So:
x = power / (weight x speed) - 0.5%
But then this needs to be adjusted to get gradient, due to the definition of gradient:
gradient = x / sqrt(1 - x²)
where weight = Mg (mass in kg, g = 9.81 m/s²), including the bike and clothing and water and the camera, etc.
Sooooo... what editing software are you using?
DaVinci Resolve-I love it and have been using it for years. I use a combination of Photoshop, Telemetry Overlay and Resolve to make the on-screen graphics
@@MitchBoyer Ayyeee, thanks for sharing and I hope they sponsor you too. Good luck and be safe out there.
What gearing did you have on?
I had a 46/44 chainring and 10-30 cassette on the bike for this video. There’s something special on the way for the Italy climbs 😉
@@MitchBoyer don't you mean 34? Only having a 30 on the back is indeed impressive
@@DanTubergood catch! 10-33 cassette not 10-30
@@MitchBoyer 34 front i meant
Why didn’t you ride California Street?
When you get back from Europe you should lead a steep streets tour of LA ride… 👀
Climbing up those steep hills must take tons of training and looks really painful on the knees.
Why is it that no matter how wrecked my legs feel, they feel even more fried when I start up after a short rest?
The cafe leg struggle is real 😮💨
I don’t understand how EJs heart rate is so low compared to you other two’s rates 😂. Great video 🎉
Thanks dude! Yeah I’ve got a super high mac HR and EJ’s HR strap is slow to broadcast, so it’s delayed by a bit. Since the efforts are so short I think we’re basically seeing his HR from before the climb each time
@@MitchBoyer gotcha. I was worried about your heart topping out over 200 and exploding but you survived 👏🏼
@@simonverrill 😂 yeah Val says I have a hummingbird heart
u CLIMB steep streets right, you must be what they call a sprinter. I Wanna be a sprinter too :D
Plase come for a British hill climb season and meet Ed laverck, our former national champs on hill climbs
Ahhhh st Patrick’s hill
Cork , it’s a killer
Is that in Montenotte?
@@whimsical_ninja close but Patrick’s hill is right of the Main Street / city centre , there are quite a few steep streets in cork city
Lmaooo they are doing 1200w up that second hill. But I get it, less time spent on the hill = better 😂
You must go through alot of bike chains.
Funny - I was just thinking of the original video the other day.

Thanks for watching!
san Francisco where if ur elderly stepping outside your house...u might fall instantly
Have you been on Madeira?
Not yet!
@@MitchBoyergo there and ride in Funchal
Where are you going in Europe , i live northwest Europe
Just left France, I'm in Switzerland right now, and will be in Italy soon :)
600 watts with a 128 bpm? How?
I think his strap might be broken
Gearing?
I had a 46/33 chainring and 10-33 cassette on my bike at the time of filming this
I have issues with the whole percentage vs degree thing. If your slope is 41 percent, that's only 22.29 degrees which is not a huge slope at all and obviously wrong if you look at peoples fence lines. I swear some (if not all) of these roads are measured wrong. Formula: Degrees = Tan-1 (Grade Percent/100)
Think of it like this. If you go up 100m over 100m of distance the slope is 45 degrees, so if you are climbing less than the distance covered it is always below a 45 degree slope.
@@JoggingCatDog but 45 degrees is 100%, I still have issues with that because I have never seen a slope above 50% which is a measly 26.57 degrees.
Have you tried to do any sustained climbs on 20deg+ grades? They are no joke. Also, percent grade is highly relevant to things that use friction to propel themselves forwards (bikes, cars, etc.) because the percent gradient you can climb (given sufficient power/torque) is roughly equal to the friction coefficient of the tires.
@@ElrocStone There is nothing measly about a 26.57 degree slope - in Australia 26 degrees is the maximum slope you don't need fall protection for when working on a slope. Generally that's for working on a residential housing roofs, however have applied the same in other constructions (water dams / spillways) as to when a harness/fall protection is required or not.
One concrete slope was a 2H:1V slope (26.565 degrees) - when working on those slopes the concrete team often referred to the slope as a "45 degree" slope. Generally anyone who wasn't reading the plans or doing the surveying first instinct was to call it a 45 degree slope. Yes it is very challenging to place concrete slabs on that angle!
@@RJ_171 You're right, I think my eyeometer is out. I just see the slopes and look at the fence line against it and the angle looks greater than it is. I checked it today with a screenshot of the thumbnail and an online protractor, and its me that's the problem here because it was exactly what it was supposed to be. Ill go sulk now. Cheers.
Ffordd Pen Lech, Harlech, Wales UK is steep! Just over 37%
It’s on my list!
You guys have to invite Pogi
The dream!
I think you need to put the word “AD” in the thumbnail.
You do have to mark it as a “paid promotion” (which I’ve done), but putting AD in the thumbnail would be a little disingenuous because the video contains an AD, but it is not an AD itself. If the entire video was about the Insta360 cameras instead of steep streets, then things might be different. :)
The bag contains EPO, HGH, and an ebike
I'm not at all confident about the gradients reported here, especially when there's no consistency in the units being quoted. I doubt this guy even knows how to convert from one unit to another.
If Baldwin Street really is 34.8 degrees then that's a 69.5% gradient, and nothing else here comes close.
Check out the subtitles on that segment--there is a correction to the reporter's statement. The steepest section of Baldwin Street is 34.8 percent, not degrees :) If you're interested, in my Brisbane Australia episode I go into details on why we use percentage of slope to describe road steepness around the world. Thanks for watching!
4:16 the public like when they see a cyclist suffering
😂😂
still no upgrade to smaller chainring? i am not sure if that is impressive or just plain dumb. 😀
Just wait for the next steep streets episode 😉
@@MitchBoyer sure. I would be happy to see more of this. 🙂
Aren't you getting too old to be playing around on bikes on streets 😅
Never!
