Forgotten Roads | Ep. 2 - Idyllwild | Hammerhead

- Alex and I head east of L.A. to explore more of California, this time at elevation in Idyllwild. The route we picked is situated in-between some of the highest mountains in California, and the views we had all along the ride were amazing. We came to see as much as we could in a day while seeing as few people as possible and got just what we wished for. We kept the wheels spinning until sundown taking it all in. What a place!
If you'd like to see the exact route we took hit the Strava link below.
*** Forgotten Roads is a 3 part series by Safa Brian and Alex Colorito. Each episode sees the two documenting a different gravel route in California. These are self supported and self filmed rides that hope to inspire you to get out and explore the world by bike.
The series is made possible thanks to Hammerhead (safa.link/hammerhead) and SCOTT Bikes (safa.link/Addict-Gravel) ***

You guys did 👏it 👏again 👏 Can't wait for episode 3 already!
Two episodes in and I know this is one of the best series on all of CZcams
😊 Most appreciated!
Safe & Alex you guys are killing it keep it up!!
Great video. I'm familiar with everywhere you went... nuts bombing and wall surfing down Black Mtn dirt road on a gravel bike👍👍👍
Best cycling content on the web, period. Gorgeous views, epic locales, great bikes, and two guys that just love to ride. God bless!
Thank you
@@SAFABrian very welcome! Love your videos!
I’m a quadriplegic and have been paralyzed for 26 long years. I was an avid cyclist and miss cycling beyond words. Until God’s grace frees me from my wheelchair, these videos are such great inspiration and give me the closest feeling possible to being back in the saddle.
Keep up the awesome work and God bless you!🙏🏼
I love this series so much! I've never been much of a cyclist but I've started cycling every day since I watched the first episode, and now I can't wait to go on an adventure like this :) thanks, and can't wait for your next trip!
This series is my favorite from the SAFA cinematic universe. What a movie.
The whole vibe of this video 👌🤟🙌🙌🙌😌😎
Welcome to Black Mountain! I volunteer at that fire lookout. The views up there are some of the best of any fire lookout in SoCal.
So good I had to go twice in two days 😍
Gotta get out to the west coast, so many epic service roads and trails. Would love to run some of them. Cinematography on another level of late Brian! Keep it up man.
Thank you! Epic is the word. So much to explore.
@@SAFABrian do more descent disciples please
There’s definitely some great riding out there with miles and miles of forestry service roads. Midweek this time of year is probably the best time of year to ride out there. It can get pretty hot in the summertime and also pretty crowded with the Jeep club crowds. It’s not uncommon to come up on a mile long 50+ Jeep deep traffic jam snaking along some of those trails. The flies and wasps can be a bit of a nuisance in the summer as well. There may be some snow and ice during the winter months, but that varies from year to year. Spring can be nice as well, but if it’s dry it can be crowded like summer and or if it was a wet winter it can be muddy from the snow melt. The are is like a big hub, with various trails branching off in various directions. The PCT also runs through there so you need to keep that in mind since bikes aren’t supposed to be on there. A hard tail mtb might be a better choice for the terrain, but obviously it’s doable on a gravel bike. The Palm Canyon Epic is another great ride a little south of there. Also even further south is the Coast to Crest Trail from Vulcan Mountain to Del Mar Beach.
The quality just keeps getting better and BETTER!
🙌
2 years ago I found a bike on the street. I road it home and immediately fell in love with cycling. I then learned the beauty and fun of cycling from Safa. He is amazing. I just love the freedom and danger of high speed descents. Thanks Safa, Keep posting all your cool videos.
These are really fantastic vids, the drone shots are awesome. I'm picking up my Open WI.DE tomorrow and I'm going to hit this trail next week...thanks fellas, can't wait to see the next one in Santa Clarita!
This video series has been INCREDIBLE! It may take a long time to film it, but wow is it ever worth it.
Just got my first ever road bike a month ago and it's a Scott ,because of your videos. Keep the content coming, I can't wait for the next episode of Forgotten Roads.
Love to hear it! Wishing you many great adventures on the bike.
Liking this series a lot! Perfect inspiration. Finishing my coffee and going for a ride!!
Gravel is life! You guys are monsters!!! 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Amazing video, great format for variation - cool to see SAFA and Alex doing some spiritual bikepacking in between all of the shredding!
Outstanding riding and filming guys. One of your best films for sure
Really enjoying this series guys! The production is on 🔥 🚴♂️
I love these keep inspiring others to push ourselves to see what we can accomplish and appreciate the beauty around us
Sweet- great video…. Love the rides! I’m living vicariously thru you cats. Keep it up!
Oh guys, this was amazing too! Thanks for sharing these kind of tours.
I loved everything about this. The vibe. The shots. The route. Just insanely good!
The views, the vibes it just really gets to you, two really talented guys capturing and editing these videos, what's not to love?
These are great, thanks for the series!
Sick vid, I’ve been looking forward to this one. This series is super rad, keep it up G!
SAFA and Alex - legendary duo. Another banger bike ride and video!
Absolute crazy views guys. Can’t wait for the next one!
You are tired a lot for the beautiful content. I wish you success and more motivational videos. I follow you from the State of Palestine 🇵🇸❤️
❤️
Agreed! Awesome! Truly inspirational. Keep going!
Safa I've been watching your videos for a while and I don't think I knew what you looked like until now 🤣 This video series is awesome! I am amazed at the variety of gravel riding you have out there, thanks for sharing
Haha. Most people that watch this channel know my butt better than my face. Glad this series gave me a chance to slow it down and say hello.
Proper loved that! Nice one guys🙌🏼
Awesome content! Amazing views and also pretty fun to watch you guys commenting on it.
Niiice guys🤙🏼, amazing roads!
that editing foreshadowing at 16:19 was so pro: "we don't want to be descending in the dark; we don't want to be riding in the highway in the dark." nicely done gents.
I think this was even better than Ep.1. Looking forward to Ep.3
Nice gravel! and nice movie.
So stoked you guys are doing this series.
California looks like the place to be for epic gravel climbing scenery!
your videos got me into cycling during covid and changed my life ... raced a bunch this past season out here in NYC, and actually just got back from Malibu, rented a house on Hume...and a bike... you mentoring Alex has got to be the best part, what a great kid. plz keep it up SAFA
That's really great to hear. Cycling was a savior during covid. And wowaweewa, a house on Hume, doesn't get any better than that!!
And yeah Alex is a great guy and we're teaching each other a lot. This series is really a two man team effort.
@@SAFABrian Alex’s contributions scream through these films … he’s a real artist and his cinematic touch has elevated your work in an incredible way … I’m out here writing the point break/ cycling screenplay when y’all ready 😏
Looking good again!
Amazing content! Keep up the amazing work.
This is my new favorite buddy film : )
thanks for sharing your ride story with us and hi from Turkey ride more be safe...
Fantastic!!!!!
Nice one. Waiting for ep 3!
Fantastic film. It's amazing up there. But I could almost feel the relief when you guys finally pulled off the highway back to the dirt. That hwy is sketchy as hell!
Thanks!
It is but we actually lucked out and hardly saw any traffic when we were riding🤞
@@SAFABrian Glad to hear it - keep up the radness!
That was epic boys respect from Australia 🇦🇺
Nice tunes mann! loved the vid
Amazing quality.
I wish I could ride with you both.
The music selection is fuego 🔥
🎹 🎛️ 🎶 Thanks!
love it !!!!!!!!
I recommend Puerta La Cruz Rd, Warner Springs, CA. Heads out Indian Flats campground. Just past the glider airstrip. It is a paved road big enough for one car, sections feel like a bmx track.
Do you have an link in Strava or Ride with GPS would like to try it
Great vid
that descent looked smooooth
It is very deceptive but the odd smooth sections felt great.
I grew up in the area and I never realized Mt San Jacinto was part of the San Bernardino Forest. What a Massive area from Big Bear all the way east. I hope you guys can do some Nor Cal stuff sometime. I spent some years in Sacramento and there are some epic spots within driving distance.
I was really surprised too, huge area!
This is a place i can call dear to me because it was the first area that I went outdoor bouldering in an area referred to as "black mountain"
This is so cool. I would love to do some bikepacking through here, but those grades look insanely steep. I wonder if there are any water sources up ther.
Lit🔥
Super !
We need that shirt, safa! 👕👀 Take our money
Altadena to Palmdale and back over gravel is a good ride I'll never do again in this life.
😂
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🍻
Super ill!
“decide what we’re gonna do on Black Mountain ‘cause it’s 420…”

RAD…Makes me want to buy a gravel bike and try something like that here in Chile…cheers!
I'm sure Chile has amazing gravel routes. 🇨🇱😍
👍👍👍
Best🙂
What a good video ! By the way, do you still use the gopro hero 8 with the karma grip or do you use other stuff now ? Appreciate.
Above the clouds
How do you film yourself with the drone while riding? Very cool shots!!!
What is your chest cam setup? It always looks so smooth, I love it
"pretty shit lines if you ask me" LMFAO
"Pretty shit lines, if you ask me, going in to that corner" haha
🙃
Good view and brutal.I like gravelbike.stay brutal gravel dud.
0:52 The course looks like a lion
Great video and great route, Safa! What size Addict are you riding and how tall are you? I'm planning on ordering one as soon as they are available in my local shop. Not sure what size though, since I seem to fall in the "between sizes" category. Would you go for the smaller frame with longer stem or the bigger frame with shorter stem. Thanks and keep the videos coming!
Thank you!
I'm 6'1 and ride size L. I always opt for a smaller frame but every body and its proportions is different.
These just get better and better, love them guys!
Safa-how do you find the WTB’s? Been looking at them but haven’t committed
Thank you. The tyres are pretty damn good for the socal conditions. Surprisingly fast on the road imo. They do wear pretty fast but I always take performance over longevity. Currently on Maxxis Ramblers and like them off road cos they come in 50mm for my front tyre. They're slower on the road but great on the dirt.
Ah awesome, appreciate your reply mate! So many tyres out there these days haha, but you might’ve convinced me to give them a go
Great video as always! Thank you.
What drone is Alex using?
DJI Air 2
Need a similar bag for bike top tube as at 2:43
Hi Safa, all these photos was taken by GoPro? Beautiful, wow!
No, a Sony A7siii
GREAT VID SAFA!SAY YOUR FIT AS FUCK NOW!IMAGINE WHEN THE NEXT BIG WORLD'S IS ON!YOUL SMASH IT!👍👍👍
Which WTB 45c tire do you run for gravel riding?
Hi, Safa . . .👍
👋
Which pedals do you use for your Addict? Mine will arrive in December 🥰
I'm a Time ATAC guy, been rocking em for 15 years.
Superb! Well done, lads! Can you tell me please the models of your bikes? thanks a lot! Cheers from Greece!
Thank you! SCOTT Addict Gravel, the blue one is the 2020 model, the green is the 2022.
@@SAFABrian Thanks!
@SAFA Brian can you please bend someone's ear at Hammerhead about the sensor dropouts - particularly PMs. Been on their fix list for months now. Having to reconnect your PM every time you stop is taking the piss.
That sucks! I haven't had any problems with my speed, cadence, or pm sensor on different bikes 🤷. If it is an issue for people you can bet they're working on it. Haven't seen a company put out as many updates as HH do.
@@SAFABrian I'm not sure if it's been like this since the start of Karoo 2, but it's been more than 6 months. A lot of people get dropout every time they stop, without fail. Only PM sensor I've not seen consistent problems reported with, is Favero. HH have offered suggestions to try to stop it, which generally don't work, and some people have been offered refunds, but there's no word from them on any kind of fix.
Heey, wat do u think about Canyon Grizl? :D
What jersey is Alex wearing?
What was your tire pressure on this?
Around 30psi
Where can i get one of those sweet Pray for Speed shirts?!
Tear it off my back! 😂
Cool...especially when a lot of people do drugs in your country...fat-free physique. Love your videos.
hilarious when you shit on the motorcyclists' lines going into the turn on the highway
Just messing about, they got through there fine 😂
His bike is road bike but hu is on the mountain hahaha
"Pretty shit lines" - BURN
15:51 right when you think a cyclist is gonna say something positive about a biker
he would have said something nice if that guy picked better lines lol
1 word to get those bowels moving: Suppository
Thank me later
🥴 Wow straight to butt pills! Maybe on day 3 not the first morning!
@@SAFABrian was more of a PSA for the uninitiated
would be better to have the commentary at the beginning, the end and inbetween just from the off over the footage, this doesnt have the flow of your other videos.
It's a sponsored video. Probably had a few guidelines on how to edit from the sponsors. They plugged Hammerhead a few times.
