Frank Knapp was a personal friend of my family. When I was young we used to go there for multi day stays. At that time the ranch was beautiful with all kinds of animals. The property was 360 acres at that time. The main house was very cool with an old player piano that all the adults would sing to. Frank was a very kind man who donated the ranch in his will. I remember the Old Ridge Route well. We used to get up there with regular passenger cars as well. That was cool when you showed the main house, lots of memories. Some of those outer buildings was where we kids would sleep,
Oh wow, what great memories you must have from the ranch. What a location! I can imagine how beautiful the houses would have been not so long ago. It's really a shame that things have fallen into such a state of disrepair but at the same time I'm not sure what the other option is for the forest service.
If you're out again in the cold without proper warmers remember that you can take some of the dry grass and whatever dead organic matter and stuff it into your jersey. It will insulate your core and make you at least a little warmer. Thank you both SO MUCH for this wonderful series. I have watched each vid multiple times, as well as the extra scenes. Pure stroke! Flat landers like me, stuck in Iowa, can only dream!
Rule #1 for all day rides, Bring extra clothing! You can always remove stuff you don't need, but you can't put on what you don't have. Great video as always.
As a boy scout in the 60's, my troup had to hike through the night to out flank a massive fire that had started at an old gas station south of gorman. Beautiful terrain you covered. We were deep in to our 50 mile hike from lyons camp above Ojai at the time and were to end our adventure near what later became Pyramid lake. A harrowing experience needless to say, fortunately our troup leaders new what they were up against. We hiked all night to out run it. no phones, or contact with any one til the folowing dawn. Thanks for the chance to see some of that territory again. we were just a bit further west of your route. maybe I'll get to ride some of those stomping grounds sometime. I really appreciate you guys stopping to take in a place or a moment, it adds considerably to your story telling.
Grew up in Newhall and spent 30 years riding those roads. Knapp ranch is a cool place. We started riding in there in the late 90's. A couple of times we rode past the ranch to the Gillette mine. Also we rode south from the ranch to try and follow an old road bulldozed in the 30's that descends down to Castaic lake. Probably half the way pushing the bikes to though brush and washouts. Tons of other gravel roads to explore up there!
Hey Brian and Alex. Fantastic mini series, thoroughly enjoyed it!! You’ve both got me inspired to find my everyday biking adventures here in the UK!! 🚴♂️🇺🇸🇿🇦🇬🇧
Keep the series rolling Brian and Alex. So great you have filmed these roads in my backyard. Been riding the Ridge Route and surrounding areas on both my mountain bike and gravel bike. Lots of history and enjoyed that you included the history on the video. You guys motivate me to keep the bike adventures going and I'm looking forward to more of your videos in the future!
Amazing series. Can't imagine the effort that went into making these episodes! Would love to see you and Alex do another season of these. Also, I just bought a gravel bike because I was so inspired by these rides!
Dang, I was hoping that this would be a series without a pre-determined end - just popping in every month or three with a new "Forgotten Roads" titled vid and all the special effort that gets put into each of these.
Best series I´ve seen all year. Outstanding work guys, the production skills were brilliant but mostly just seeing you having a blast on those hills. Can´t wait for what you come up with next. Cheers from Norway
Just finished watching all 3 of these on the trainer this afternoon (14" of snow overnight). Great stuff you guys. Makes me want to make the drive out to CA and take some of these routes in.
This serie is getting better and better! I loved the way you introduced it as it shows that the route is more than just a bike ride. Thanks to share this with all of us 🤙
Thank you guys! super stoked on this series, very entertaining and extra Kudos to Alex for carrying a backpack full of camera gear up all those climbs!!!
great your video! it really makes you want to go on an adventure, with your bike and your sleeping bag and discover other lands!!!! it might be the click for me one day to buy a bike in this style!
Watched all 3 episodes. All of the locations you rode had its own beauty to showcase, and I love each one of them. I wish I could go and ride my bike there one day. But for now I'm content with the evergreens and humidity here on the far side of the planet.
Awesome vid, guys! Loved the additional history lesson too! Sorry for the chill Brian. Bet you won't make that mistake next time?! Keep up the adventurous riding, gentlemen! Well done!
Been waitin on another one of these. Gravel Gods, descent disciples, and pray for speed stickers came in yesterday so perfect timing. Just waitin on my waist pack.
There are a couple of roads that might make great additions. The’ truck’ trails (Harding, Monroe, Indian etc) may work. Don’t know if there is an off the beaten path road, but there is a super beautiful river valley between Grapevine and Santa Maria. Then there is the road been Los Banos and Holster, Mercy Hot Springs, where the Padres used to bathe on their trek between the missions. Old Sierra Madre Road/Cuyama River connects to some trails (off Hwy166).
Im 25.5 minutes in and I have been waiting for Alex to offer you his arm warmers... But then i realized that he is a photographer and producer as well as a rider and discomfort = drama and drama = good content lol.
Using exercise to get through hours of hypothermia is a type of misery I am familiar with and would not want to do again. Still, I enjoy the hell out of your videos.
What a well-done series! You guys truly live in a bike paradise! I would love to see more abandoned places and the history behind it. Did Alex at least offer up the backpack for some extra heat? I know he didn't offer his sleeves? lol I think Alex spoke for a lot of us in his outro! #oldway
It sure is a paradise! He didn't forget his sleeves so not sure why he should be cold haha. Couldn't carry the backpack cos I broke my collarbone earlier in the year...
Cool vid!, Alex switched to Pathfinder Pro's?, running pretty low pressure by the looks of it. I've used mine for ~ 500 km's (310 miles) which is nothing of course, but I already like them a lot !
Hi Safa, I've been into cycling since I bought trek dual sport 2 last half year ago, would you recommend selling hybrid and buying roadie for longer distances or is hybrid good enough for that
Amazing episode. Keep them coming!. Am I just fooling myself or did you get a new frame from the Scott Addict Gravel ? Thought you had the Gravel 30 color way initially but looks like the Gravel 10 color way now..
We, and yes I'm speaking for all of us who watched this series, demand a season 2 of "Forgotten Roads"!! Easily the best gravel content out there.

Thank you! Every episode was a blast.
The fog, wind, rain and cold is so reminiscent of riding on bridleways and byways in the UK. 😄🚴♂️🇬🇧
Watched all 3 today, beautiful & inspiring work you both did. Thanks for sharing the passion.
