  • A collaborative film project between Mercator Films and Evergreen Gravel Racing which explores the intersections between adventure cycling, conservation, and Indigenous Sovereignty. The film follows 10 cyclists as they disappear into the landscape surrounding the Dark Divide 300, a 330 mile Pacific Northwest bikepacking route through Nisqually, Cowlitz, and Squaxin Island land in Washington state. Tribal leaders from the area provide context on what the land means to them presently, has meant to their Tribes historically, and what the adventure cycling community can do to become better stewards to the land we occupy. The route will be run as an endurance bikepacking race in summer 2023.

    More like this please! Much more layered and in-depth stories than I expected and held my attention the entire 25 minutes. Thank you for not creating another shred the gnar bikepacking video.

    Awesome video and captures the vibe of being in and respecting tribal lands. I have run many trail in the Dark Divide area and in the Gifford during some long trail races and look forward to seeing more of them from the saddle of my bike with like minded souls. Thanks!

    Congrats to all the riders and thanks for all the inspiration! I found the bit at 7:39 especially touching and something so many cyclists can identify with. Cycling seems to bring a joy that breaks in diametric opposition to the way society inextricably structures our lives. It's like coming up for breath after you've been underwater for a long time. Really looking forward to riding parts of the route, especially Juniper Ridge trail (sans snow!).

    loved this and loved the closing statement.. if more people loved and respected our mother earth who gives us life as much as they loved their god or money we would all be better for it. (but also love bikes too).

    Love the statement about recreation being a missed opportunity to educate. As much as they are a over-loved these days, I love National Parks for the work that goes into education. I often come home from a trip to other public lands and retro-actively do the historical education piece (just how my brain works, it doesn't stick as well if I research before-hand, I only have brain space for logistics at that point). It would be amazing if more resources were available to educate visitors to all of our public lands.

    Looks like a great place to go and ride. So very into see how differently the world is looked at. The division of people from place. I suppose that's why you called it the divide? Very striking to see how the natural awe of nature is obscured by the innane iterations of people.

    • @mercatorfilms
      @mercatorfilms  Před rokem

      The Dark Divide roadless area is a location on the route and the reason behind the name of the film. It is definitely true people look at the land differently though

      I would recommend getting involved in a forest near you!! Like Kris Peters was saying, recreation can be an economic benefit to the community by helping to keep people coming back to these landscapes. The land can be worth more with trees standing, especially when viewed on a long time frame.

    • @bitem13
      @bitem13 Před rokem

      @@mercatorfilms Maybe I should start with one of the best MTB trails near Portland that DNR logged and destroyed: 3 Corner Rock. Trees are gone, but maybe they can view repairing the trail as part of the equation at least.

    just beacause we surrounded ourselves with shiny stuff the technology offered us, doesn't mean we became more civilized. the people who run the show continuosly try to give the word tribal bad connotations because there are interest involved. actually the more we distance urselves from nature the more we become influenciable... dependent on others opinions. they tell us what we need and what we should do.. alienating us from beeing able to connect properly to what made it possibile for us to exist and survive this long. like if you dont know what are the rules of living together with this planet and each other distances us from knowing ourselves better..using our senses, feelings, intuition better
