TV show hosts, we’ve gone through a few.
From the allegations that ended Ellen’s illustrious TV career, to Lilly Singh’s unfortunately fruitless foray into the world of late night, how the internet’s inhabitants cross-pollinate to other platforms is a curious conundrum. Given many modern day talk show’s reliance on social media for greater proliferation, they regularly experience the advantages, and disadvantages of being able to answer immediately to an audience who can be known to turn on a dime, but it’s a risk that many are willing to take, especially with the world as it is today.
With video-sharing and streaming platforms taking up a significantly larger market share than they used to, content running on syndicated and cable have needed to adapt to the evolving landscape or risk being left behind. At the same time, virality can often only be fleeting, and as we saw this last year with the cancellation of Dr. Phil’s self-titled TV show, at one point the basis of some of the most viral content on CZcams, the internet moves fast, and the internet moves on. Late Night Shows still pull sizable ratings, but studios and networks are always going to be concerned with the trend, and in the past few years, late night shows have seen more endings than beginnings, particularly on the later night slots which were often used to test the potential of future content. It sent the message that the confidence in this format was waning. How come?
Over the past few decades, ratings on many late night shows have remained solid thanks to their ability to tap into relevant issues, and use the host’s charisma to build a closer one-to-one relationship with the audience. The losses over TV have often been filled in with the CZcams success, whose monetisation is maximised due to lucrative deals with the video-sharing platform, but in the past few years, the path that many of these shows appeared to be on has somewhat diverged from the tastes of the youngest target demographic: Gen Z, and for us, it wasn’t hard to see why.
In the past few years, there has been a different kind of virality on the internet, one where a concept generates a significant degree of fame, but one more akin to infamy, and even if a trend is well-documented, and even “popular” to a degree, it may be treated with contempt by those who engage with it the most. It seems that the writers and producers of these shows didn’t really grasp this, and their approach to the “interests” of the Gen Z, has been one that often appeared to alienate viewers more than it did entice them. In essence: late night was becoming out of touch, and its slate of rather inoffensive yet insipid hosts was doing little to appease these concerns, but was there a place for that style? One man would argue so.

Craig Ferguson was a seriously underrated late night host, in my opinion. His monologue on why he wasn’t going to make fun of Britney Spears after her extremely public breakdown remains one of the kindest and bravest things I’ve ever seen a late night host do.
I really loved watching him. Such a great interviewer. So charming in a lighthearted comfortable way. Truly the kind of person you feel like you would love to have a coffee with. ❤😭🥰

As an American, I agree. I'll throw myself under the bus here and admit I used to find him funny. That is until I started watching more British media, got used to the accent, and really started to HEAR what he was saying.

Id probably like him more if I came to know him from some other medium. Even someone as awesome as Conan O'Brian just becomes better in different environments.
The clip of Kimmel telling Corden to name 2 cameramen was what woke me up to why Corden deserves the hate he gets.
Especially when you compare him to someone like Seth Meyers, who does a whole ass web show that has evolved into 60% jokes just to make the staff and crew laugh (corrections) (where my jackals at?❤). Hearing the crew genuinely laugh at things Seth says is so endearing and enjoyable.
I haven't actually seen that one. Did Kimmel get the same question? He seems like an empathic and down-to-earth guy most of the time.

It's so weird when there's a really well known celebrity who's mostly known for being hated. It's like someone tried & failed to make him famous but he ended up infamous by accident & whoever was helping him just gave up.
I think of big part of it is the fact he’s like the 6th most popular late night host and most people nowadays know him from that. So it’s like, you hate him or your reaction is “Who?”
I don't really follow him but the stuff I have seen gives me an entitled, sassy prick vibe.

My favorite James Corden story is when he was sitting next to a woman and her crying baby on a plane and tried his best to ignore them by putting on headphones and turning away from them, and then it turned out they were his family.
I met James Corden in a restaurant in 2015. I went over to him just to tell him how much I liked his sitcom , and he suddenly flew into a rage, shouted "fudge cake, fudge cake, fudge cake!" at me, and then he stabbed me to death, and stole my girlfriend's dessert.

I absolutely agree it's the falseness that is the problem. I'm a store worker, and I personally don't have a problem with customers sometimes being rude. We all have occasional headaches, UTIs, family problems; sometimes patience runs thin. It happens and I don't take it personally. An apologetic smile, a quick "I'm so embarrassed over last time", or just improving the behavior, and we're good.
But if you're rude all the time and act like if you're not? All fake laughs and expecting special treatment for being "nice", all with and era of being so much better than us? THAT makes you unlikable. And that kind of unlikeability shines through.
We laughed our heads off when one of these guys called me "that fucking intern" to my face because he didn't recognize me with my hair down. After his rant I simply said "Oh, well, that was me, but describe the issue and I'll see what I can do."
His face went blank for a second, then he returned to the fake smiling, pretending like his little rant never happened. And to this day, he, of course, wants special treatment. And if he had been famous, I would have tweeted about it.
Nobody expects perfect behavior. But humans are impressively good at sniffing out falseness. And we don't like falseness.

James Corden reminds me of an ex of mine who I despise being reminded of, as he is the reason for my PTSD. James Corden doesn't look like him, doesn't emote the same way, doesn't sound like him, but I look at him and SEE my ex.
And it's exactly that, the same aura of fakeness, the same fake enthusiasm and cheekiness that I'm detecting. Where, if they were being honest to their true thoughts and feelings, they would get nasty and rude and hurtful, but decide to wrestle it down with impeccable self control. TRO make a comment in this video, that James Corden isn't comfortable with presenting his true personality to the public. And while we can't tell what's under the surface, it makes everyone incredibly suspicious, even if nothing is wrong with James and he may actually just be painfully normal.
I think people like that have... convinced themselves that that is what everyone else does. That they're all faking, so they understand to a degree. But he just think's he's faking it better, or more. But he's not he's just fake. And people are living as the people they are.

Being a 56 year old American female I grew up with the talk shows like Donahue in the day and Carson at night. Your video covered not just the subject of your title but the late night talk show genre and you did so excellently. Your piece has also led me to a sad conclusion that the late night talk show the major networks have been producing is an era at it's end. It is neither good or bad it's just progress and the way people are entertained changes with it.
That's how it's always been, i've been watching these talk shows since the 90's and none of them were ever entertaining unless you're one of those celebs obsessed people. The format is so dumb, it's 25% talking 5% random tidbits and the rest are tv ads.
@@stellviahohenheim Agree with this, at least with the major network shows. What's also interesting is that the majority of late night are interviews, at least in terms of air time. Yet very few hosts come in with interviewing as a strong point, and it shows with almost every show. Colbert is solid, but even he's still a comedian first.
Even in the 80s and 90s, I pretty much switched around the late night shows for the set pieces. Leno's was the only monologue that I consistently liked, but that's because he was a veteran standup who effectively did a 10-15 minute set every night. After that, it was looking to see what people were doing that night. Leno is doing Headlines? Okay, I'll hang for that. Oh cool, Letterman is doing Stupid Human Tricks, or Conan and Andy are doing In The Year 2000 again. Etc.
Nowadays, I can't imagine who actually wtaches the shows on the air. Older folks tend to be asleep by then, and anyone younger than 50 probably has no interest in any of it. You have it right: beyond the first 20 minutes, late night is really only good for the star-fuckers. In Carson's day, that worked because it was the only really good way to see celebs outside their craft. But in the modern era, you don't really need it.

Honestly though, I really respect this take, not because I'm a fan of Corden -- I've only ever seen him on Big Fat Quiz and Graham Norton -- but just for the sake of hearing a bit of humanizing nuance once in a while.

Yes he’s big here only for Gavin and Stacey. The show is brilliant and funny. He and Ruth Jones are very talented. He’s not big now. He does earn a big cheque from repeat royalties. The show seems a bit dated but always worth a watch
@@magrend2 Just want to state that not everyone in the UK likes Gavin & Stacey. A lot of us found it tedious and cringey and news of christmas specials feel like a threat to some of us. I mean, it's at least preferable to mrs browns boys, but not by much.
Corden though has always been an annoying prick.
Although he's not in the US late-night space, I do think that the best host out there is still Graham Norton, and my reason for that is the lack of distraction. The whole show is just interactions between a bunch of people (often helped by alcohol), capped off by one musical performance and a little bit of audience participation. Graham is also a very good facilitator of conversation in a way that James Corden lacked. It's all the skits and games that turn me off most of late-night. That said, I DO feel like Craig Ferguson was severely underrated. His more surrealist elements like Geoff Peterson and Secretariat were far more a precursor to The Eric Andre Show than anything else seen on late-night.
Graham Norton will never be beaten as a host, even most American celebs have said that they prefer going on his show instead of the US ones.
I want to say Jonathan Ross is a good host as well, but he gets really annoying after a few minutes.
Paul O'Grady was another who was an amazing host, and it's sad that he was taken from us.

I'd love to have a drink with Graham Norton. He's sharp, witty, warm, and genuinely interested in his guests. He's adorable when he gets starstruck and all giddy. Craig Ferguson is no different imho.

Craig Ferguson is the most underrated late night host ever. I saw him do standup once and he’s just great.
Me too! He made a joke, my partner clapped really loud and Craig remarked on it. It was great, we had a couple of older ladies as our neighbours and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. I like very few comedians. My brother met him once, had nice conversation and I even saw him at an eatery, but didn't go up to him as he was with family, you know, eating.
Late night television is consistently one of my least favorite types of television.
The only one I like is Last Week Tonight by John Oliver.
Craig Ferguson quitting and Conan O'Brien falling off at the same time was a blow the genre could never recover from, at least in North America.
Totally, it feels like one giant exercise in self agrandising for the host and the celebrities, like they all gather round to implicitly suggest they're amazing. Why would you spend time watching people grease their own poles.

i feel like too many people in these comments missed the point that this video tried to touch upon which is that james corden may be a lot of things, he isn't 'untalented' or 'horrible', he's just a man who got pretty lucky and did a pretty damn good job of making a career out of it and the hate thrown at him (and many others) are merely bandwagoning and forget to extend humanity beyond your "average" person. criticism of a person's work doesn't equal hate or personal attacks on a person
Yeah I genuinely think most of the hate simply came from him being EVERYWHERE. I personally started getting a sour taste in my mouth because his name was incredibly prominently placed on the poster of a LOT soulless and incompetent movies (Cinderella, emoji movie, ect.). But he's not a bad actor, his performance on Into the Woods (while the singing was not great) was actually pretty good.
I don't doubt that also his enthusiastic persona just ended up coming off as disingenuous and annoying. Like a comment here that said he reminds them of the the kid in drama class who thought they where amazing and insisted on being the lead despite not being the best actor in the class. Most people disliked him before he did anything wrong.

I have asked people why they’ve hated him before and a significant number of people have said “it’s because he’s fat and Sir Patrick Stewart said that was a good reason to hate someone.” I wish I was joking. Like, I really wish I was lying. Even more people just… can’t explain it. They hate that he breathes. But somehow don’t have the sense to realize he’s not at fault for that.
If I was one of the people still bandwagoning hating him while someone explained, in great and grounded detail, why that is over-the-top… well, I’d be pretty embarrassed.

Because James Corden, while slightly more handsome than your average guy, is by no means distinctive looking or sounding. There’s no reason to just accept everyone’s “sightings” as true in this case, especially given his handling of the one situation that went mainstream.
Ferguson was amazing. I loved his show. He was such a great interviewer. Charming and self deprecating. Silly and light hearted. Immediately disarming and comforting for anyone that may have started out nervous or uncomfortable.
You could make an hour long video just on why he’s so likeable and seemingly easy to talk to.

I assumed she was probably allergic to something in the wrong side dish they brought her when she got the new omelette, since he mentions sending it back for the third time or whatever.
However it is possible to have a mild allergy or intolerance to only one part of the egg (yolk or the egg white). So for her eating a yolk only omelette (with only traces of egg white) might be fine. Eating a whole egg omelette likely wouldn't kill her, but it could still make her ill. If it was something else she was allergic to I think it's okay to send it back for containing egg whites, since it'll be a different type of omelette. Especially when you're eating somewhere high end.

I liked his character in _Doctor Who_ cos he was just a simple wholesome guy. He never had super ugly moments and was pretty sympathetic. Like, a much cuter version of his character from _Into the Woods_

As someone who tends to skew on their side of things, I agree with you. I don't really watch them anymore because politics are depressing to me and I would rather read the news in 5 minutes rather than sit through 30 minutes of politics. Not a slight on them, their research teams do great work and John Oliver especially has accomplished great things with his platform. I just am so, so tired and I would rather spend my time elsewhere.
Every episode of the Daily Show had a monologue and a guest. Occasionally two. And they had segments and sketches. I would never considered it as such when I woke up this morning but reading the comment made me realize the Daily Show had more in common with Johnny Carson than Dan Rather

@virginiavanni8061 It was seen more on older episodes, pretty quickly celebrities began appearing in goofy skits and songs rather than actual interviews.
The truth at the heart of all this is late night TV is the canary in the coal mine for the death of network tv. Since the time of Letterman v Leno, the decline and fragmentation of audiences due to cable, then CZcams, then social media and streaming, Late night has been ahead of the curve for programming as a whole. (with the possible exception of children's programming/cartoons)
The fact that the one lifeline they've found to keep their heads above water is CZcams, shows they're woefully behind the times even today.
I'm 42 and grew up on Carson. I have many fond memories of being young and laughing at all the jokes. Now a days I've put on Antennae TV for my father with dementia and when this comes on... I find myself stopping to listen and laughing. And interesting enough he would have some political jokes and it's so interesting seeing how a 40+ old joke can still apply to today. And his ability with interviews, they did always seem authentic. There were plenty of times a comment would catch him off guard and you could see Johnny himself laughing at how he was thrown off. Right now everything is a formula. I think, for me, the pandemic killed me with talk shows. Them being at home and not having their full staff showed.
I wonder (genuinely wonder, I don't have any answers here) if things could have been different if James Corden was thin. I wonder to what extent he felt pressured to adopt a jolly comedian persona, because that's a role society generally accepts from fat celebrities, and not much else. People generally are a lot less forgiving towards fat people for their slipups and transgressions. Combine that with a bit of a theater kid air that isn't inherently harmful but also rubs a lot of people the wrong way, I'd really like to take a peak into the alternate universe where there's a thin James Corden without the theater affectations and see how well he's done.
He definitely gives Jonah Hill vibes in the way that he gets triggered over his weight though- all the smiles dissapear if you joke about his insecurity

It’s not that people dislike Corden because he’s fat- people dislike him because he’s a complete knob head - it’s just maybe he’d have got more of a pass if he looked better.
Really interesting thought. I think a useful comparison for this is Conan O'Brien. He jokes a lot about his own appearance (being tall, skinny, pale etc) and he also gets away with being a huge dick on camera. Being a dick is even part of his whole schtick. Imagine if James Corden tried to add those two things to his act. If he constantly commented on his own looks, and then also openly acted like an asshole. We would say he's just a sad, insecure man who takes it out on others. But Conan gets away with it because we sort of know he's really not that bad-looking... Or, at least he's not fat. And he can be a dick because he's easy on the eyes, we're not openly judging his appearance.
That being said I also think there's something to be said about the fact that Conan is just a fundamentally better comedian than James Corden. He's objectively funnier. So I don't know, that also makes him infinitely more tolerable to me.
If he wasn't fat he wouldn't have become popular, as he has no real talent.
The lockdown musical number was also frustrating for those of us front line workers who were not fortunate enough to be about to stay home and be safe. I had to go to work every day through the whole pandemic and it's just irritating to see people who were so fortunate to be able to stay safe indoors rejoice because they could go outside again. I wish I would have been able to feel safe like that.
completely agree. my mother nearly died of pneumonia because she was a front line worker taking care of patients who had the virus and hearing that celebration boils my blood - i know it wasn't the intention but it feels almost mocking to those who did die as even though they likely did stay inside or didn't get the choice to they still suffered and became another statistic

I used to watch Craig Fergison everynight when I could since I was in high school at the time. I was there when he got Geoff the Robot and he was just so funny and overall hilarious. I still quote Geoff's "Carefull Icarus" all the time.
The channel TheJayLeno Fly has great compliations Of Craigs show. Sometimes I wish he would come back becuase he always had such interesting stories. His stand up specials, I think he has more than one, are also very good.

The restaurant is a big turning point for James’ career because his old attitude from Britain made it through. Americans get very angry at people who are rude to service workers because many of us have been there. Not to mention, this was the beginning of the economic crisis that was to come so workers in general were over this kind of behavior. We don’t like people who look down at us from above, we don’t like bad sports, and we don’t like impatience. He embodied all of those qualities in one scandal.
You’ll notice that everything he did after that was suddenly seen through the same lens. Dancing in the middle of a busy LA street while paying it to make the red lights there last longer suddenly seemed incredibly irritating. People have shit to do, work to get to. Making other celebrities eat something gross if they don’t reveal super private information felt invasive.
This video is way more charitable to the man than I would have expected. Well done on you, TRO, for giving him a fair shake and not having this video be a 2-hour lampooning session.
This has been one of my favorite deep dive so far honestly. Late night shows as a kid is something I always thought was interesting, now I’m an adult(technically) and like most my age I don’t even watch tv. That and I like your take on James Corden, it’s such a fresh perspective to be like “yeah he isn’t great but he did cool things, sometimes” instead of an eternal hate fest, which I’m not saying he doesn’t deserve.

From the first time I tried to watch Corden's show, knowing nothing about him, I got the vibes too. I think it might be his body language or facial expressions that trigger a feeling of inauthenticity, therefore untrustworthy.
I think that feeling set up the path to the intense dislike that followed after a few car karaoke watches and the clip of him in a costume, thrusting at a car. That was the nail.

Craig actually didn't want to move on from Late Night. Nothing was written down, but he'd been told he'd have right of first refusal for The Late Show when Letterman moved on. Instead, they gave it to Colbert without consulting Craig, so he left.

I think it's something to with a cold hearted, cynical operator selling a product that is the polar opposite to their character.
The thing that rubs me the wrong way about Corden is it feels everything he does is inauthentic. When he's cheerful he doesn't come across as genuinely happy. It's instead this projected attitude that is like a kindergarten teacher masking inner rage and contempt.

Johnny Carson was a REALLY good interviewer. And one of the things he did that a lot of the late night hosts today struggle with is that he didn’t make the interviews about him but he was excellent at making the guests comfortable and directing the conversation so there weren’t lulls and it didn’t drag and guests got the topics they wanted to hit in during the time they had.
Strangely I’ve seen interviews that Letterman has done since he retired and I think he’s better at that now than he was when he actually a show host. Maybe he felt more pressure to perform back then whereas now he just interviews people he’s genuinely interested in.
Craig Ferguson was a one of a kind entertainer and host. James Corden is slightly more enjoyable than a tapeworm.

Ive never paid attention to him so ive always been confused why everyone hates him so much. Im glad ive found a video that goes over it all so i dont have to start actually paying attention to celebrities.
This episode seemed less focused than others, i cant put my finger on it but it feels like there was a lot more repetition than usual but i really dont know of that's the case. Maybe it's just that there's more discussion of publicly known problems than revelations of depravity accompanied by chat logs, with explanations of who is what avatar.
That being said, a weaker TRO episode is still among the best content on youtube, and this episode may well grow on me. Keep plugging away, you make the internet a better place.
Mate, by the time I noticed I was watching a sponsor spot, I was so engrossed in it I didn't have the heart to skip. Class.
James Corden tried to the whole "theater kid who is self-aware" thing, minus the self-awareness
including the louis tomlinson clip at 1:31:25 was very funny for me since i'd spent the video so far thinking about how james's connection with one direction potentially boosted him, especially leading up to 2015. and now i'm going to infodump about it, because i need to get it out of my head.
there's context behind that louis clip and every 1d appearance, which is that james was friends with 1d from their beginning. louis and harry in particular; louis's mum had known him from when his sisters were on one of james's shows in the mid-2000s, and she'd contacted james when 1d began to see if he could look out for louis, which led to louis and harry becoming friends with james and his wife. a symbiotic promo relationship was established in the early 2010s, including 1d going on league of our own, james guesting on 1dday, and most significantly, james and ben winston directing the video for best song ever in 2013.
ben winston is sort of vital to understanding james's rise i feel; he's worked with james since ~2010, and he was also very involved with one direction. he directed several of their music videos (his company fulwel73, who produce late late, directed more without him) (he's not extremely creative; one of his videos was allegedly plagiarised), he interviewed them during livestreams, he produced/directed 1dday and their movies/tv specials, he ingratiated himself into harry's life in particular (and sold stories about him/made a whole fabricated tv show "based" on him; harry "lived in ben's attic for two years" except almost all of that time he was on tour or not in the uk or just not near ben) (tbh a lot of what i remember about ben is him being casually misogynistic or racist, pushing verifiable lies about 1d, and using them for clout/profit). ben and james are very intertwined creatively, especially when it comes to the late late show, and they were both very involved with one direction. like ben was obviously strongly tied to 1d's team, especially in 2013 and 2014 (but fulwel73 produced 1d's first mini-doc on the band's one year anniversary, so they were actively working with 1d very early on), and i just wonder how much that was a stepping stone to tlls.
so it's unsurprising that tlls had one direction on twice in 2015, during its first year (the only year when 1d were actually still together). james was their first real interview after zayn left. all of them (except zayn) have been on multiple times solo - harry and niall have both hosted the show, harry did a whole week in 2017. it was a staple in quite limited promo cycles for all of them, so the scarcity made those appearances special.
i don't think tlls or james was solely built off the back of one direction, but i don't think it can be ignored that a huge amount of viewership came to them via 1d. it made james (and ben) a part of the one direction cinematic universe - he is way more involved with them than he would be for most other celebrities. and, importantly, it's always been strikingly obvious that he is friendly with them. they were comfortable with him in ways they weren't always, and he didn't degrade them like most interviewers did.
so, this isn't a defence of james, but something that's become very apparent to me was that he either genuinely likes a lot of celebrities or he REALLY wants to be liked by them. possibly both, probably more the latter. it seems like he's the sort of person who treats those who can do something for him VERY well and ignores the rest. i have seen something genuine in his interactions with 1d, especially harry and louis (partially because they KNOW him in a way a lot of these celebs don't, so they banter with him - but i've also seen that he cares about them) and i've seen a load of phoniness from him with so many others, as well as the off-screen stories. it's led me to think his bubbly persona is only real with those he actually likes - but then, given that i'm an autistic person who heavily masks, i have to question how much of a crime i really think that is 😅
tbh i dislike ben winston a lot more than james, he's said and done things that i find reprehensible far more often, but he's the part of james's story that not many people know about. he's probably the reason james has done a lot of the things he's done (like - why was james involved with the friends reunion? because ben produced it!) idk i liked this video a lot but i think ben and 1d played a massively understated role in james's career. i think the connections he and ben had are what got him there.
oh! and! a current thing! james has been using harry for positive promo since harry's tour ended in july 2023 lol. they've been "casually" seen out and about many times in the last year in extremely suspicious and unusual ways - and it's been literally a decade since they were papped together, so it reads very much as harry needing to remain relevant while not working and james needing to build up some public goodwill. once again using harry's proximity and audience. (and, actually, harry was seen with ben a couple months ago for the first time in years - and again, ben needed public goodwill. just think it's very clear that they both use/profit off their connection to harry/1d.)
The level of talent that James brings to the table makes me think anyone is absolutely capable of making it anywhere, talent or no talent.

However, i will say any look at his hiring and run on the late late show is in my opinion incomplete without mentioning ben winston. I think cbs hired ben who brought on and championed for james if im not mistaken. Per wikipedia ben winston "is a British producer, director...He has won 13 Emmy Awards and been nominated 33 times. He holds the record for the individual with the most Emmy nominations in any one year when in 2019 he received 8 nominations. Business Insider described him as “the most influential producer in television.”'

Something I feel I have to point out, as a Gen Zer myself, about my generation's politics: We are growing up in a time of extreme political divide. I would personally have identified as much more centrist a few years ago, but as I've come out as a trans woman and as the anti trans hate has grown throughout the globe, I find myself getting pushed more and more to the left simply because the more left wing somebody is, the more likely they are to tolerate my existence and not try to shoot me on finding out that I'm trans. My generation isn't apathetic, we are polarised and demonised. The reason we don't show any support for the mainstream is because we feel the mainstream does its best to drown out our ideas. Liberal governments aren't allies for us, they don't speak for us, so why would we support them? It's now to the point where labour parties in Australia and the UK are no longer allies to the queer community, young people in general, or even the working class at all, when speaking for the working class is supposed to be the entire foundation of their existence. If you look at the trend in where my generation is voting, it is extremely polarised. If you're in my generation, you're probably either a far right conservative Trump supporter, or you're voting for the greens or straight up communist parties because we're so sick of ineffective governance from all the big political parties. There's been a huge shift of young voters in my country away from the labour and liberal parties, towards the greens.
If anybody older is reading this and wants to know more about the politics of young people, it's essentially this: we have seen time and time again the failures of the current system. We aren't necessarily antiestablishment, but we are anti *the current political system*. We're growing up in such a divided time that a lot of us are either far right or far left. None of us can really afford to be moderate anymore, because the moderate system is the system that is actively working against us to shut us out of everything previous generations have had easy access to.

It’s a red flag for me when someone makes fun or harass someone for being harmless but embarrassing. I'd never befriend or talk to someone like that. Light jokes can be fine, but bullying someone online, especially under their own posts/videos, for no apparent reason is just too low. Like I'm not exaggerating when I say that some people seem to treat this as an actual crime. It’s ridiculous.

As an American, I’ve never heard anyone say they like James Corden. He definitely has creative talent as far as creating segments like Carpool Karaoke & the eating segment where guests should shine despite his annoying presence. His lack of quick wit or charm was apparent when he attempted to copy Graham’s interview format. That said, everyone was glad when he quit & went back to England.

Genuinely think his main problem is that he took every opportunity he could and ended up being part of projects and films that turned out to be disingenuous, soulless cash grabs. As someone who still consumes late night, I completely agree with everything you said. The spontaneity of late night has gone, the interviews feel scripted and with it, the need to watch it live or even consume the promotional content no longer feels necessary. Carson's CZcams channel is an absolute gem
As a Brit, I think he played Smithy great, other than that, he’s as funny as a cardboard box. I feel like he just had better opportunity in the U.S. We already have some really great comedians.
Yeah the thing is most Americans never actually watched the show. They just saw the car pool karaoke, & Americans are certainly suckers for karaoke. Not only that, but James really isn't featured that much in those segments. The focus is on the celebrity. This video is actually the first time me or my friends have seen anything from him outside of that type of segment.
I personally don't find any late night comedian funny. The only comedian these days that can make me die laughing is Ricky Gervais. Maybe I need to find more British comedians.
on the topic of seeming 'genuine', the reason that jon stewart's reputation has stayed relatively good among younger people (compared to other late night hosts, at least) is pretty simple: political commentary actually is a field he's suited for, in a similar way to how johnny carson was suited for a more standard talk show format, not something he was inserted into. he knows what he's talking about. so jon's snark doesn't feel forced, and the fact that he stays pretty calm and disaffected means that when he does take the claws out on a guest, it has a big impact. people still share that Crossfire clip almost two decades later. james corden can't do political snark because he's just not that kind of guy, and it sounds painful when he tries. which is fine - nobody's good at everything - but he shouldn't try to co-opt something that isn't the right field for him. he has plenty of talent as both an actor and a musician, but he has limits, like everyone else.
as a millennial, i remember when night talk shows were way more fun to watch, but i can't really connect to them anymore like i did when i was a teenager. the only time they feel relevant or interesting are the few segments that consistently go viral (Mean Tweets is still a lot of fun, kudos to whoever pitched that), or when a clip is really cringey and everyone mocks it. other than that, it feels like every episode is exactly the same. maybe my taste just changed. i'm not sure.
for the record, though, i do think the hate james get is disproportionate to any actual wrongdoing. i think some people need to realize that it's okay to just dislike a celebrity and it doesn't actually need to mean that the celebrity is a demon from hell
I agree with everything said here, that said I think Jon Stewart coming back was a big mistake on his part, he's now coming off (to me at least) as cringey and out of touch, only slightly better than Colbert who I can't stand these days, their politics haven't progressed from the Obama era, what was edgey then is now tired and dull
