- The wife of the newsreader Huw Edwards has named him as the BBC presenter suspended after allegations he paid for sexually explicit images.

She said her husband was 'suffering from serious mental health issues' and was 'currently receiving inpatient hospital care, where he'll stay for the foreseeable future'. Her statement came shortly after the Metropolitan police said there was no evidence that Edwards committed a criminal offence. On Friday 7 July, the Sun newspaper alleged a BBC presenter paid a young person for explicit photos, starting when the individual was 17.
The Guardian looks at the events that unfolded following the Sun's story, as further allegations came to light from a second individual and household BBC names including Gary Lineker and Rylan Clark had to deny they were the presenter in question on social media.

It would have been much worse had it been a Labour MP. The press would probably try to cover it up if it was a Tory and tell you to focus on migrants or Jeremy Corbyn.

Wait...so how come the Police decided it was not worth investigating this case? The young person was aged 17 at the time when Huw paid for the pics and the law clearly says it's illegal to possess or share pics of anyone under 18. Clearly the law was broken at that time even if the young person who is now 20 says he has no issues with Huw?
But they weren’t 17 - that was the impression the original story deliberately gave but they’ve since rowed back on the assertion. They don’t care, because the damage was done.

Reminds me of the “To catch a predator” series, if what is “alleged” to have happened is accurate (I said this before Huw was identified.) that it was important this whole thing gets report on because this is someone who is about 60 something years old sending inappropriate images to someone who wasn’t barely 18 years old, if it was a person who was over age it would’ve been awakened and Huw could’ve been taken off tv for a while and come back (much like how Frank Bough did.) it would’ve been a bit alright but if this person was below 18 and that Huw was sending those horrible images to this youngster then his completely out of line and shouldn’t appear on television anymore.

I gather that if consent was given and the picture was of a minor, but over the age of 16, then there is no offence. This defense is not allowed, though, if the material was shared. This is how I understand it. No illegality, but a very big age difference! Make of the moral issue what you will, but Huw doesn't appear to be a criminal so far.
