Unfortunately society was so thick they didn’t see this coming. The reality is the UK is not as advanced as we think and the framework of greed and corruption is starting to become more apparent
If you backed overturning the EU Referendum, Net Zero and Lockdowns then you are part of the problem my friend, not the solution.
Spk for the little english. We Scots at least had the knowledge to know brexit was bad.
@@annemoncrieff3875 get off your high horse, you have low mortality rates and high substance / alcohol abuse numbers. If your so smart why is a large majority of the Scotish population trying to numb the pain with Bucky and coke?
@@annemoncrieff3875 true, but the
Scottish government isn’t as full of corrupt opportunists lying to the public, so the Scots had at least one advantage.
@@annemoncrieff3875 Hi Anne - Well here is the rub. I'm of Irish, Scots and English grandparents. My father was born in 1934 and raised as a Scots Irish Catholic in the Govan tenements. You 'might' have an idea of what this would like depending on your age. Not the myth.. the reality. The parochial attitudes of both communities.
My mother was an English protestant. Her family had no issue with her taking a Scots Irish Catholic husband however my fathers family were not so enthusiastic.
As for your Little Englander comment I bet you could not even tell me the origin of that term. Let me enlighten you. The Little Englanders were a group of Liberal Party members in the 18th/19th century that opposed the expansion of the British Empire. They had envisioned a British Empire of global trade rather than colonial expansion, of technological innovation and personal liberty..
As such I wear that label as a badge of honour. It's what we should be looking for now.. avoid the European Empire at all costs.
I lost my mum and only parent at Hillsborough. I had to go into social services care as result. Thanks so much for making sure a new generation understands just how despicable the scum is, not just to Hillsborough families and survivors, but to all its victims. It destroys people's lives. Would just add that their coverage of disaster was instrumental in ensuring continuing cover up and no justice, as well as smearing victims, us families and survivors. That demonisation continues to this day, eg Spectator magazine. So much better than anything I've seen on Novara Media regarding Hillsborough. Thanks so much once again. X
Im so Sorry for what happened to your mum 💔 & that descipible rag 4 all the lies it told 😣
Condolences to you on your sad and tragic loss. May your mother RIP. God bless the people of Liverpool who had the moral backbone to ban Murdoch's rag.
I am so sorry you grew up without your mum. My thanks to you and the other Hillsborough survivors for bringing the S** and others to account for their disgusting behaviour. I know it must have been a long and painful fight
Sorry you lost your Mum in such tragic circumstances - What the Sun printed about the Liverpool fans was the most disgusting lies ever - It was so bad that I would not dare repeat the horrible things they said to put the hate and the blame on the Liverpool supporters
MR PERFECT CHRIS
The Sun newspaper who boosted it's rating with nude models on page 3, including some as young as 16 or 17, is obviously the go-to place for moral guidance.
Ah, irony. I know what you mean. But think of all the dunces who will read your comment and think it is showing them the light. (Not that I dislike your comment in the least. But it could be in huge letters on a billboard, and, with a double thumbs-up, and grinning face, act as an advert for the hard of thinking.)
Two maxims for life
NEVER BUY THE SUN!
NEVER TRUST A TORY!
Pseudo Tory Labour under Starmer? Will it be much better? Murdoch's control of UK governments doesn't make sense.
TRUE Never trust a SUN S TORY
LOL, I would say NEVER trust ALL western medias and g0vts, we are ALWAYS played and pitted against each other.
Dont forget the Daily Mail
Thank you for being so sensitive towards Hillsborough, both of you. Excellent video
A superb example of well-informed, lively. shrewd and temperate discussion. Hope to see Horrie on the channel again.
That was one of the most interesting and informative podcasts in a long time.
Hopefully within the next 24 months the fear of Murdoch will be gone forever and the UK can realise just what a mess he has left us in.
One of the nastiest human beings in my lifetime. Even his own children eventually walked away from him.
So you think the 'working class' British public are so stupid they are totally influenced by tabloid newspapers?
How progressive of you.
That's exactly the same as saying black people are entirely influenced by rap music.
You're not woke mate, you're blind as a bat to your own prejudice and self hatred.
I enjoyed this. Chris Horrie is an interesting and knowledgeable "expert" whom Oli allowed to tell his story by giving him space and placing well asked questions. This is how it should be, although I'm no journalist. Chris placed a historical perspective into the modern day with how it all pans out in today's world as it is. Oli built and probed. Regardless of your politics, this is what we should be having. Thank you. (I'm from the newspaper reading generation, BTW)
How does it feel that most of your generation is pleading apolitical positions following Brexit and Covid? Specifically in the company of younger people?
Genuinely, encountering the closed off attitude is both mystifying and frustrating.
@@SpannerWorks Not sure I understand, Spanner. I can only speak for myself. Brexit was democratically voted for, albeit probably as a result of a dishonest campaign and implemented disastrously by the most inept, talentless and corrupt (Tory) government this country has had the misfortune to elect.
The media create people's prejudices, not just simply respond to them
How True!
No, it would not exist if there wasn't a market for it, The Sun only exists because the general public are scum.
Many people are prisoners of their own prejudices and ignorance.
No, the prejudices are there. Their job is to feed and enlarge them.
You can't invent a prejudices.
@@jonathanfell688 Indeed, the problem is the Left are too utopian, they view the world as they want it to be, so when it doesn't conform to their view there must be some reason for the anomaly whereas the Right sees the world as it actually is and seeks ways to profit from it.
No mention of the deafening silence from the Murdoch School of Journalism over the Wootton saga....
Not just Murdoch. It seems to be all news media. Perhaps for now it's because he's bit of a nobody.
"Things that are not watched anymore, like Newsnight". Brilliant, Chris!
As a former student of Chris', nice to see him getting back out there.
I love it: 'the excuse for a royal family'. Thanks Chris.
If I can add my two Bob - I told the Liverpool supporter group to organise a boycott of the Sun on Merseyside - very proud I did. I told them it would cost Murdoch a fortune which it did.
Well done you !
Second that.
Thank you. Stuff that old vampire.
Well done, sadly rival fans still taunt Liverpool fans over Hillsborough. A Chelsea fan held up The Sun newspaper on his feed , when they were due to play Liverpool the following day.
I remember the change, from The Sun, to The Scum. My uncle used to read it, a Labour LCC Councillor. He hated what it became. I miss you John.
The Sun is crap but let's not forget the Daily Mail and Daily express being as garbage, and the fact that there is people's who enjoy reading them is the reason they are still in business. SHARED responsibility .
It's one of the very few things that myself and my Dad had arguments about. He read the S*n and I wouldn't touch it, even to pick it up from the shop for him. I eventually caved, as he was housebound and couldn't go to the shop himself. He was an intelligent, caring man, yet couldn't understand why it was I hated that rag so much. We watched the Hillsborough tragedy unfold and the subsequent bile written in that "newspaper", yet he still bought it.
Uncle John only liked page 3
@@Victory987I remember them publishing page 3s of girls who had just had their 16th birthday, I’m sure one was Samantha Fox, probably what made her turn to rug munching after the thought of all the dirty old men ogling her.
@@alwhyte6533 because your father, sadly, is capable of extreme compartmentalisation, like my mother or father, or the older public. I suspect I will have the same issue when I end up nursing my father.
For that generation, moral dichotomies are capable of existing in contradiction with each other. They were taught 'mend and make do, don't think about it too much'. We were taught 'think critically about what you are told to do, making do isn't enough and there are consequences beyond what's in your life'. Couple the fact that for older people, their worlds literally shrink, and you have an absolutely massive generational divide.
Your parent thinks and speaks differently to you. He thinks, 'Its just a paper and I luv me paper. That's fine.' You think, 'This paper has damaged lives, ergo, I will deny it money in the hopes that doing so will deprive it of being able to do what it did to people again'.
I notice Starmer went to Murdochs party, just to arrange him being allowed to win the next G.E
Never heard about that, but given how desperate he is to win the next GE to the point of chucking out just about every principle he has, it does not surprise me.
Every media acquisition Murdoch makes ends up as a mouthpiece for him as he micro manages them.
So why do people buy his scum .Are they brain dead. ? I never buy goods from China and nothing from Murdoch .A trashy dangerous business flourishes because people buy it .Back to the many brain dead ..
JOE when are you covering the Dan Wooton story?
What happened?
Agreed, I would love to see what professionals think of that debacle right now !
@@tantatheindian7068That story could run for a while, 'aliases' are trying to identify who else is going to call him out.
I am old enough to remember the number of people who were warning us about letting Murdoch get too much media power when he first appeared on the UK shores. Project fear?
Well, here were are..
The count will be dead soon and I for one will celebrate.
The world will be a better place when all the Murdoch's are gone
Nah. They're going to be followed by more of same.
The eradication of poisonous newspaper magnates is like playing journalistic whack-a-mole.
There will always be another to take the place of the Murdochs. Their personal demise is largely academic, sadly...
I understand that James Murdoch has disowned his father over is denial of global warming
Watched that recent doc on Murdoch. Its staggering to me how a man could invest so much time and effort, over multiple decades, to not only destroy his own society, but the societies and democracies of a few other nations.
To my mind, Murodoch is up there with Goebbels. He's the most dangerous and damaging individual in the Anglosphere of the last 40 years
When Murdoch HAD to meet the family of Milly Dowler he crumbled and apparently laid his head on the table and disengaged with the meeting. His apparent heir is meant to be worse than his father. Something to look forward to I suppose.....
Aw shite.
That was the lowest of the low, hanging his head in shame would be appropriate, but if it was just so he didn't have to face her poor parents then he didn't learn a thing and was wasting their time in insulting fashion.
I can't wait for the day that rag goes under. The world will be a better place
@vinylrulesok8470 Along with the Murdoch dynasty, the Weird Brothers, Rothermere etc.
Counting down the days, he’s in his 90s now, the whole British media needs overhauling
@@xtyron1976xI’m throwing a party when he eventually croaks it.
Those parents should be questioned and made to show their evidence and that they did not do it for money. If they cannot do this they should be punished.
Waterboard them and send their confession to the BBC.
We have no evidence whatever that these people actually EXIST. For the first two days it was a 17 year old GIRL,then (presumably to make it more pervy) she transsed into a BOY. Then one report said the MOTHER had 3 years worth of the videos as proof. What ,the everlovin Mother was keeping and viewing the tapes of her daughter/sons performances to mark the really dirty bits. Now that is pervy. We were told that this MOTHER went into her offsprings bedroom just as the show was about to start and on the monitor she saw the paying customer in just his pants leaning eagerly forward. And that was the clinching proof of wickedness. Wait a minute, the MOTHER closed the door and left them to it as presumably she had the recording and editing to do. She did not,it seems, exclaim to her kid,"what the hell are you doing, why are you dressed ,or undressed ,like that, whose that person on that tv screen,WHATS GOING ON HERE?". This is why I think this whole nasty story is made up,a fabrication for discrediting purposes.
Brilliant guest. Got the feeling joe wasnt expecting half of his responses, but this led to a well balanced interview. This is a good example of exactly why msm has lost the battle for our thoughts and opinions. 👍
As soon as the story broke and the source was the Sun and knowing Murdoch’s hatred of the BBC I thought this is probably a lie.
The hypocrisy with the Sun Having topless 16 year olds on page 3 in the 80s.
It wasn't;t a lie.
The Sun is a paper written by scumbags and read by morons.
Huw Edwards is a disgusting pig of a man who like Tiger Woods thought he could do anything he liked with sex workers and women he met online (and then harassed) despite having a wife and family.
Got any of that life insurance money left u stole from my mum?
Hang on I thought the Left hated the right wing BBC.
@@stewie7338I know. It's confusing isn't it. Huw Edwards is exposed and they all scream about the Sun and Rupert Murdoch and protest his innocence. This strange rambling bloke says no one under 40 would know who Edwards is and no one would care about the story and the kid just nods along.
First time I have heard Chris. He's brilliant to listen to.
In the seventies, I was working in a factory. The guys used to disappear in the bog, with The Scum...shudders... I mean who thinks that's salubrious? 🙀
Now they harass women in the workplace because they haven't worked it out.
It started in the 1970s,fifty years worth of cultural indoctrination or "education" to NOT think that,or if we did to keep silent. You BIGOT. Most intellectuals all of whom were regularly on the BBC drip, drip, dripping us how to think ,they thought that was very salubrious.
Murdoch and Maxwell, enough said.
Every good-faith discussion of these types of story should start by increasing visibility of the stories the Sun was trying to distract from. We need to get a Streisand effect thing happening.
The real story is that Murdoch wants to kill the BBC. He visited Boris Johnson and whilst playing with his youngest son told him that he should destroy the BBC because his media outlets couldn't compete with it.
Now, when you realise that the Conservatives during the last 13 years appointed their mates to the Board of Governors, who in turn appointed former employees of Murdoch's from the News of the World to the top jobs in the BBC's TV and Radio News departments to curate their output, made it compulsory for anyone opening a radio station that broadcasts news bulletins to use output from Sky News, and awarded Sky News the contract for satellite broadcasting in the UK, it might reasonable to say that Murdoch has been amply rewarded for backing the Tories. Notwithstanding the dangerous sense of Murdoch's entitlement, he is poison. Not only here, but anywhere in the world he has outlets. He's human, but one that is pretty awful. You think Succession was just entertainment? Who do you think was the inspiration for Logan Roy? Murdoch was, and there are more billionaires like him out there, who think because they are rich that they are qualified and entitled to run the world. And have proved to be pretty catastrophic at it. Why? Because they're human, and flawed, yet wield so much power and influence, that when they get it wrong whole communities and countries get damaged. They are mental locusts, driven by bad instincts and hungry egos, and they don't care about anything else but their "Empires of Shit" as Jesse Armstrong, the main writer of Succession so eloquently and deservedly stated it through his character Ewan Roy. That's all Murdoch and anyone of his ilk leaves behind them.
There comrade DW, allegedly?.
@@ValeriePhillips-lp3mx Dan Wootton, for anyone for whom the initials are unclear.
Like when president Bidens son was in court, and all the media were covering the rescue attempt at the titanic, for a submersible, that was known to have imploded almost immediately. But they kept reporting about 'the rescue attempt'... And not about the presidential scandal.
At least the press and general media were more than fair to Jeremy Corbyn. Sorry i banged my head last night.
The newspapers are online themselves now. So, they still have a lot of influence and aren't redundant as such, just gone from a physical to a digital media - which arguably has more reach.
I’m shocked that people still read the sun
I only consume Ukraine-Russia War contents on that shite.
I’m shocked that ppl can’t think for themselves. I managed that at 9. So I’m just as baffled as you.
Read it? They love it.
british folks always accusing the chinese and russians as being propagandized, not realizing it is the british and amarikans that are the most propagandized. LOL
Or the daily mail.
Genuine question, but where is the Dan Wooton furore in MSM!? I'd much prefer a national discussion on that....
Ditto.
Double ditto !🤨
He's a nobody so there's no mileage in it, I had no idea who he was until GB News appeared.
@dobr4481 Jesus you're lucky you didn't know who he is, the man is a grade A menace to society. He deserves everything he gets!!
Exactly this. He worked at both the Daily Mail and The Sun
I don’t wish death on many people, but when Murdoch finally gets clawed down to hell (I’m also an atheist, but for him I’ll pretend), I will allow myself a smile.
Was wondering why it's called the Sun when it does not bring light into anyone's life.
Well put. But as a comparator, as far as misleading names goes, how about "National Socialist German Workers" party? (Not that it's a competition. I like your observation. As Tyler Durden said "Sticking feathers up your butt does not make you a chicken" (Out of the dark, and back to humuour)).
Thank you Joe for this very interesting video! Thank you Chris Horrie for bringing all this to light.
This was absolutely riveting, thank you!
Good interview, never buy The S*n
I'll even buy the Mirror, just for spite!
What a magnificent guest.
spot on with the analogy to the printing press & social media / internet... Murdoch puts the Times behind a paywall . so spot on about the Age of their readers/subscribers being the only reason they can get people to pay them that way. The Guardian's model shows they understand what the long game is... as do the BBC i think. Murdoch's empire, like all empires has it's time and Murdoch has less influence than russia when it comes to influencing voters now.
Interesting breakdown, it's kind of difficult to understand where we are today without kind of knowing how we got here. Good to have this kind of overview from someone who's career stretches back pre-internet and can provide that kind of perspective
Edwards destroyed himself!
Sun starts a fire and the "sensible" media turns up with a can of petrol.
Correct
The Sun needs to be banned.
Great interview. Cheers.
Excellent video. Also, can I add - Chris Horrie is great!
as time goes on page 3 gets weirder and weirder and its even weirder how much people defended it
Turning the prejudices of the British public into money
He was my lecturer at University, Chris. Interesting to see him on here.
If I was uk PM I'd ban Murdoch from the UK and from owning any company that has any connection with the UK. And I'd tighten media regs, to ensure News and opinion were properly seperated and opinion banned from the front page.
I wish he would stop choosing our PMs
Or maybe the British public should stop listening to the Murdoch narratives and choose its own governments?
Great interview, really interesting
The thing is, fucking up people’s lives is not a game.
Edwards fucked his own life up
Yes. She way too young.
Fry and Laurie did a brilliant sketch back in the 1990’s about a murdoch type (Hugh Laurie) and based around the film ‘it’s a wonderful life’ where the murdoch character didn’t exist and everything was lovely and it ends with Stephen fry’s angel character throwing the murdoch into the sea to drown…..
We have all known that Murdoch and maxwell where/are just bike people and have been controlling politics for nearly 50 years
" Bike 🚳 people"??
I did not know that. Thank you. Some of A Bit of F & L was a bit poor, but I think that I will try and find said sketch, just for the satisfaction of seeing it for myself.
Didn’t the sun publish naked pictures of teenage girls every day?
Hey Joe
YES, I enjoyed this Interview.
Mr.Horrie was a treat with much detail speaking the Truth.
BUT
Where is the Story on the Parents of this Young Person in the Huw Edward Allegations.
Where is the Bank Details showing the Lodgements of £36.000 Transfe/Transfers.
The SUN I hope will be Confronted in the Body of the Court, no Editor or Journalist should be allowed get away with what they Printed/Insinuated without Presenting the Unvarnished Truth.
Regards.
I could listen to Chris for hours
Great interview. Thank you.
Good content. I think thou that it's easy to overestimate the power the 'Sun' newspaper has these days.
The Sun was a catalyst in the Huw story, but everyone and his mother jumped on this one to. Not all in condemnation, but adding fuel to this toxic fire.
And I'm as guilty as anyone, because I listened to this story. I gave it a little oxygen of my own.
There's a ceremony attached to buying the Sun as with buying a coffee or pizza, even though we can do this for ourselves. Hence there will always be a market for it.
Will this interview be on Spotify? I would like to listen on my commute.
Sixty years ago, you get the same treatment just for having an extra-marital affair, then. If you were in the public eye, you'd have the book/newspapers thrown at you.
Best guest i`ve seen on anywhere for ages, brilliant!!!
does the sound cut in and out here on this video? Or is it on my device?
Long time watcher, first time commenter. But how much do we have to donate for you all to get better acoustics and better mics ❤
Wow he’s brilliant, time to buy a book of his i think
Absolutely.
Wow newspapers cost loads now, I had no idea, I haven't bought one for twenty years.
Poor Huw Edwards. What a despicable newspaper The Sun is. Strength to Prince Harry.
If HE can afford £35k on dirty pictures he is clearly being paid too much.
Doesn't it seem odd to you that he'd pay so much for images of a kind which would probably be legally and freely available online? It suggests to me that he had some emotional connection with that young woman. Is he, perhaps, "in love" with her?
Ruert Murdoch has married a 29 year old wan he is 93. The hypocracy
Presumably he married a lying hypocrite who said she loved him, not his money. He rewarded her lavishly for being a lying hypocrite. Why change the habits of a lifetime?
Makes a total mockery of marriage doesn't it? He's just a rich pimp really.
I would agree to a certain respect except for accusations of sexual harassment in the workplace by huw edwards. I've no doubt that these cases would have been floating around the BBC but had not been investigated. There where rumours of Saville crimes in the BBC but nothing was done. The BBC should have learnt from that. An organisation with their sort of track record should be aware of what staff are saying even if complaints aren't officially made simply because there is a power dynamic involved
I like the point at the end about how strong unions were effectively the guarantor of ethical behaviour by journalists. It also applies in other industries.
Great interview. Chris Horrie is impressive!
I was going to compare the people who work at the SUN as slugs, but that would be an insult to slugs themselves; their cognitive abilities shine brighter than the SUN's reporting.
My best mate reads the sun; lost some respect for him
READS is a moot point though, isn’t it?
@@Lynnefromlyn Yes, 'looks at it' is more apt...
Interesting and funny to me, here in Toronto Canada. Thanks.
Very interesting, and entertaining interview. The only unfortunate thing was the digital ( ? ) microphones, which sort of go dead as soon as anyone stops talking, which becomes a bit annoying after a while !
I kept thinking he was using bad language which had to be censored.
Did someone flick a switch at @41:32 ? Audio goes really quiet.
I've always felt that the tabloid papers in Britian reflected the bigoted and entitled mindset of a large number of British people. Leading directly to the likes of a self-defeating Brexit vote and toxic anti-immigration rhetoric. This small mindset will inevitably collapse the power structures that these tabloid papers sought so hard to protect.
The working class still love and buy the scum, don't blame murdoch blame the working class jerks , i meet them everyday ,
Brexit was used as an opportunity by the tories to increase immigration
Bigoted and Entitled such as assuming that a large part of the British population voted for Brexit and go as far as hating anything to do with immigration based on reading the shit written in the Sun newspaper.
I'm starting to come around to that way of thinking.
Horrie wrote the funniest book on TV I’ve read - Live! Just hilarious
This was very interesting. Thank you
Would Huw qualify as an accomplice of the Jim "ll fix it situation.
Great interview
Great interview, he's a character isnt he😏 without serving his own head on a platter, he acknowledges what all reasonable people have always known: scurrilous sells. The fact, incredibly, that even we, the British, dont find all that much beyond the pale, is a good indication of a genuine shifting of attitudes rather than people merely paying lip service to them.
There also came a feeling from this interview that The Sun has "Had its time". If so, good, i always hated the rag😂
Insightful interview
"the internet is tabloid journalism on steroids"
Great guest il have to buy one of his books.
When I started my first job (17), I started buying newspapers (everyone did then) I went through a lot of them, The Sun, Daily Mail, the Guardian and so on and so on, I ended up disliking them all in the end and haven't bought a news paper in many years, to many political opinions on something that should be reporting 'news' and not opinions (whether I agree with them or not).
The Sun though to me did represent a nasty by nature under belly of journalism.
The Sun definitely the worst piece of journalism at any level.
Great podcast. A biopic of The Sun in it's heyday would be good viewing.
What a fantastic interview. I had been saving this up for the last 9 days to watch a great job PoliticsJOE.
If you wouldnt sack a doctor, a baker or football player for having extra marital affairs, then why should a presenter receive the treatment that Edwards has received. I dont understand why anyone thinks they have a right to know all the sordid details, even if its all true
It never did Blojo any harm for sure
Mr Horrie's seeming definition of 'public interest' as used in the question "is this story in the public interest?" astounds me. He seems to think that the concept of the public interest means "is the public interested in such a story owing to the readers' prurient disposition?" instead of "does knowledge of the story genuinely benefit the public in some way". The mind boggles.
You’d think Huw Edwards was a world leader to hear this guy tell it.
The Daily Herald metamorphosed into the Sun in 1964, not as late in the sixties as was stated by the host!
My God, we've been stitched up and didn't even know it!
Turning the prejudices of the people into money - a definition of standup comedy too.
