In this Part 1 episode of Tough Rules & Cool Interactions, I will be talking about one of the most common mistakes I see in Magic and that is the interaction, and lack thereof, between Doubling Season and Planeswalkers. They do interact in one aspect but then they do not in another aspect, and this video aims to clear that up and explain why that is. Next weeks episode will dive deeper into this and see how we can further complicate this scenario.

It's oh so subtle, but the difference of a couple words makes all the difference. The way my brain parses the difference is that EFFECTS can cause YOU to put counters on things, and Doubling Season cares about this because an EFFECT is what did it. YOU can place counters on things for reasons other than an EFFECT, like a COST, so it becomes more relevant that doubling season does not care about YOU but vorinclex does.

Yup, one of those cases of when Magic cards care a lot about the very specific wording used.
Good one. I think the key here is that loyal abilities (like all activated abilities in magic) follow the colon template, i.e. "+1: do something".
I thought about going into more of the details of Activated Abilities, but I figured I'd try to be a bit more succinct. I have a habit of going on and on and on, so it is tough for me to not just make every video be 20 mins and go into all sorts of other details. I want to.
While I knew that that was how Doubling Season and Vorinclex interacted with Planeswalkers, I appreciated being reminded as to why exactly it worked that way. Great video!

Oh yeah, it's a rule that not a lot of judges know at a lower level, I've had a couple times at an LGS when someone asked the question but another judge was closer and so they answered, but I listened in and they slipped up. Judges are always learning too, myself included.
I finally know why this is! That you so much, I've heard that a bunch but never the why behind it.
It's a bummer you've heard it brought up before but nobody ever explained the why behind it. At least now you can help out with others.

Same, I didn't know about this one. I don't play against walkers all that often though, so that could be part of why.
The fun part is when you have vorinclex, monstrous raider and doubling season on the field at the same time.

Would Comet, Stellar Pup be able to have double loyalty be put on it with doubling season?
Ha! That's a really good question as that is a Commander legal card. Yes, you would actually get double form Comet's Loyalty Abilities if they are a + result. They are not the cost to pay like we see on most other PWers.
