Amber is goaded!! Huge fan of the faerie precon and out of the box it played super well. Also very new player friendly which is a huge advantage as a loaner deck.
The Rohan deck is so fricking good, I've been loving Aragorn as a commander. So many people ignore his no-blocks monarch effect and if you happen to lose the monarch, he gives it back. The blue and white let's you use human hate bears and aragorn let's them hit face
I also prefer Aragorn as the commander, I think the deck functions better with him since theres a lot of monarch specific cards, vigilance and lifelink are great qualities too. They didn't even mention the busted forth eorilingas card. That card can kill the whole table given the right board state.
I personally have loved the masters of evil deck and haven’t found the issues you talked about happing like if you are aggressive your making Dalek and drawing cards and it does have a bit of spread in focus but it’s about being aggressive and having some kind of protection through goad or having a army or cyber man
I was shocked I tells ya! Shocked that masters of evil was the lowest ranked out of the dr who precons. So far its been the deck with the best results for me out of the four.
Food and fellowship is the most fun I´ve had in commander this year.(2023) And I love that the deck is built on Hobbits as a theme. You can go with Sam and Frod as the "original" commanders focusing on food-tokens and the benefits from them. But I really prefer using Merry and Pippin as commanders and they turn the deck into a creature token deck. Very fun.
Just a minor thing I noticed. While your observations of the Sauron precon is completely correct in the fact it didn't have a focus, the points you gave were of one of the decks focuses being it mills, reanimated, builds orc armies, etc. The part that doesn't really fit that you forgot to mention was it is also trying to be a non creature spellcaster style deck with Saruman, guttersnipe, etc. Orc armies work with both as both sides use goblins, orcs, etc. themed buffs, but it's split between two themes, which generally don't mix well. Personally, I've turned it into a reanimate theme deck after upgrades since I already have a grixis spellcaster deck with my 40K chaos deck and there was more reanimate theme than spellcaster theme. Not pertinent to my call out, but it's just what I did lol
Ive got him as a PW Commander for Blue, Red and White and then Carth the Lion as a PW Commander for Black/Green. Both Decks seem to really make people believe that you are the arch enemy when in reality you need at least 6 turns to even threaten one player out of the 3 😄
Planeswalkers just scream attack me too much. I also think people feel less bad about attacking a planeswalker than a player with some of their "free" attacks early, like they put out a dinky creature that doesn't do much before people have a board state and they don't wanna do damage to a player b/c god forbid they draw a little bit of ire, but if there is a planeswalker out, oh yea better attack that so it doesn't reach its ultimate ability.
I genuinely don't know how you can rank the Sliver Swarm precon #12. This deck is as unplayable as you can get. You never have the right colors combination, and are always behind everyone. When your board state is behind the planeswalker deck, your chances of winning is next to zero.
I was wondering the same thing. Don’t know what metric they were basing it on but slivers was definitely worst of the commander master decks unless you upgraded the decks but the same could be said for all of them. Them placing it higher than the Eldrazi made me laugh. My stock Guff precon was better then those that picked up the sliver precon and I admit it was really rough out of the box.
When I saw the Riders of Rohan list, I was convinced it was the most powerful precon of all time by a pretty wide margin. I still haven't seen it in play, but it looks so insane.
Great episode. You covered the decks fairly, I have a few on the list. With a nice collection to build with, all of my decks have as much potential as any hi tier deck. Of course certain decks interest us and some do not. Thanks for the info to make interesting choices for my next purchase.
Have you guys played against the pirate deck? It's actually kind of a house. There are several really broken pirates in there. You said they like treasures and artifacts but this deck has a ton of pirate synergy. Our mid power group gets wrecked by it regularly. It's a little inconsistent, but it's like 80-20.
I only paid $32.00 for each of the Wildes of Eldraine and Ixalan decks and $40.00 for the Doctor Who Pre-cons. I made a lot of upgrades for my Ahoy Matey's deck and it is quite good now. I fact, I have upgraded most of these decks. My Calvary Charge is really good and so is my Faerie deck and Merfolk deck. I have not upgraded my LOTR decks yet and my Ixalan Vampire deck and Dinosaur deck. Thank you for the video Nitpicking Nerds.

I could agree with almost the entire list but definitely wouldn’t put blood rites better then merfolk. I alo think master of evil was pretty solid and didn’t need much upgrade as long as u play aggressive. Riders of Rohan was definitely a power house str8 out the box and happy I found it for $39😊

If you add like $20 worth of upgrades to each Precon, the Merfolk Deck is BY FAR the strongest one. I'm at a point where I don't even play it anymore within my friend group because it gets out of hand way too fast. I'm sure it could compete with some cEDH Decks.

how many utility lands do you two normaly run? I usualy keep my utility land count pretty low aside from things that destroy field of the dead. most of my decks have 3 of those
depends on how many colors you run really, in 4-5 you want to be as low as reasonable, in 1-2c you can splurge more. Id definitely maximize them there, especially the colored ones
*takes out all the Masters. Make Davros deck artifact focused* I highly enjoy the deck via my antics of making sure four villainous choices are made. Heck, the deck other than one other I made this year is quite good. I've rarely lost and netted some comeback wins thanks to the Cybermen token creations or the Daleks just got too out of hand.

i am missing from Cute to Brute and They are just like us but cewler and with wings. they might be overprised secret lair only, but they are still preconstructed commander decks that where released this year (2023).
It’s currently one of my favorite decks but I upgraded it a fair bit leaving Bright-Palm as the commander. I love the doubling counters effect and the backup ability, and it just leads to a massively huge board state

Im shocked, Wizards is printing chafe and claiming its not chafe. Spoiler alert, Wizards wants you to buy chafe to get some ok cards in the pre-cons. Dear Wizards, please reprint playable half decent cards and include at least 10 of them in each new commander deck.

I somewhat agree with that list but feel like none of the commander masters should be outside of the last quarter. They aren't better than 40$ decks, presold with despicable methods. The two I was curious about were sliver and PW because I was like PW and sliver will always be iconic, but I changed my mind when I found out that sliver was sold out before release or offered at about 150-200€ and not going five colours for the PW threw me out of it as well. Also 23€for a set booster for that misery of a set was waaaaaay too much for what you could find inside. My bet is next year will be filled with even more stupid pricing and IP dillutions so I'm really not looking forward to it.
Really helpful advice and nice to see why some of these precons are good and bad. I little irritating when you say cards are poor as most of us can't afford to buy and replace any cards we don't like.
Oof... how to tell that people didn't play that Guff deck... That deck when you actually run it is fun and strong. It is an underappreciated powerhouse. And yes, i will die on this hill lol
I get triggered by the Elven Council/Masters of Evil comparisons. Like Elven council voting does absolutely nothing for anyone, including pilot of the deck. MoE voting instantly gets you into arch enemy status. Elven Council is unfocused and bad. MoE sole purpose is to be arch enemy. It does not deviate from that goal regardless of all the different legendaries in the deck. Not sure if this is a moxfield test review of the deck but pumping out 3/3 Daleks with menace with draw or enemy discard, is not the same as the +1/+1 or draw from elves. When the MoE deck starts snowballing with myriad from Cybermen Patrol, it can easily draw three cards per turn as well as make it very difficult to simply block with menace. Curiously this same scenario is what favors Riders of Rohan above almost all the list. Here’s the thing, on games I played with both decks. Riders of Rohan falls behind in the card draw. Then all those “unfocused” legendaries, start doing work on top of the daleks with menace. Eowyn needs a human to enter all the time. Davos just needs to hit one opponent who can’t block menace. So yeah not sure in what testing did Elven council did better than MoE. MoE definitely should be higher in this list. Plus would definitely love to see a breakdown of Elven Council. Aside from Legolas waiting for a legendary or Colossal Whale doing work until removed, all my time spent on that deck has been waiting to occasional wipe the board, counter some spells, or bring in elves that get completely ignored by the table. Elven council voting is right there with watching planeswalker party players +1 everything.
I feel like commander precons have gotten a free pass for a long time. They are casual so its okay that 2/3rd of the deck bulk so you can spend money to upgrade it. While they print challenger decks which everyone screams that the deck ratios are wrong. Its no wonder they WOTC like printing commander products.
For most of these decks I’ve played I can accept the differences as matters of opinions, but the Sliver deck is genuinely one of the most dreadful experiences to play with of any this year, worse than any other deck let alone one at a super-premium price. Slivers are major aggro who make up for their lack of proper size and finishers by having small guys with geometric value, trying to play them out faster than anyone can answer them. A sliver deck that is just on regular curve is already losing. The dreadful manabase that is not only almost all tapped but not even the best tapped lands slows down a deck whose only survival trait is speed by a full turn every game. It would genuinely be better with half the lands replaced with basics, which is absurd in a five colour deck. It is a dreadful piece of deck construction that honestly begs the question of whether it was ever tested.
You're delusional. The Sauron deck is an instant arch enemy. the whole deck is about board wiping and ramping out giant creatures before the opponents are ready. Living Death can change games quickly if you're falling behind. decree of annihilation can be used to draw what you need and fill the graveyard with stuff to revive with Sauron. Subjugation of hobbits can steal all creatures under 3 cmc giving you instant board advantage. the whole deck is based off playing aggressively.

Made only a handful of changes to my Eowyn deck and it absolutely took over the table - I was VERY surprised! Yeah, it's explosive!

Guff was fun to be able to finally have a commander that has PW payoffs. But it became SUCH an arch enemy situation so much that I had to disassemble.

Guff has a fun combo with jace and milling over 160 cards. Its not a strong deck but its hella fun

My brother beat me and my friends with it straight out of the box with no upgrades. It's really aggressive.
The best one of all time is still Exit From Exile imo. That deck just does everything out of the box.

I’m very surprised the Sliver deck is ranked that highly. It has the worst mana base I’ve ever seen in a precon, which basically made it unplayable.
I haven't even gotten to the Sliver deck in the video yet... But the Eldrazi Unbound deck is so much stronger than Sliver Swarm in their base forms for sure.

Probably 3-ish? I’m not sure off-hand, but Field of the Dead is usually one of them 😎

I get triggered by the Elven Council/Masters of Evil comparisons. Like Elven council voting does absolutely nothing for anyone, including pilot of the deck. MoE voting instantly gets you into arch enemy status. Elven Council is unfocused and bad. MoE sole purpose is to be arch enemy. It does not deviate from that goal regardless of all the different legendaries in the deck.
Not sure if this is a moxfield test review of the deck but pumping out 3/3 Daleks with menace with draw or enemy discard, is not the same as the +1/+1 or draw from elves.
When the MoE deck starts snowballing with myriad from Cybermen Patrol, it can easily draw three cards per turn as well as make it very difficult to simply block with menace.
Curiously this same scenario is what favors Riders of Rohan above almost all the list.
Here’s the thing, on games I played with both decks. Riders of Rohan falls behind in the card draw. Then all those “unfocused” legendaries, start doing work on top of the daleks with menace.
Eowyn needs a human to enter all the time. Davos just needs to hit one opponent who can’t block menace.
So yeah not sure in what testing did Elven council did better than MoE. MoE definitely should be higher in this list.
Plus would definitely love to see a breakdown of Elven Council. Aside from Legolas waiting for a legendary or Colossal Whale doing work until removed, all my time spent on that deck has been waiting to occasional wipe the board, counter some spells, or bring in elves that get completely ignored by the table.
Elven council voting is right there with watching planeswalker party players +1 everything.

I feel like commander precons have gotten a free pass for a long time. They are casual so its okay that 2/3rd of the deck bulk so you can spend money to upgrade it. While they print challenger decks which everyone screams that the deck ratios are wrong. Its no wonder they WOTC like printing commander products.
The Sliver deck should have been #25, no question about it. The mana base is absolutely atrocious and everything comes in tapped.
For most of these decks I’ve played I can accept the differences as matters of opinions, but the Sliver deck is genuinely one of the most dreadful experiences to play with of any this year, worse than any other deck let alone one at a super-premium price. Slivers are major aggro who make up for their lack of proper size and finishers by having small guys with geometric value, trying to play them out faster than anyone can answer them. A sliver deck that is just on regular curve is already losing. The dreadful manabase that is not only almost all tapped but not even the best tapped lands slows down a deck whose only survival trait is speed by a full turn every game. It would genuinely be better with half the lands replaced with basics, which is absurd in a five colour deck. It is a dreadful piece of deck construction that honestly begs the question of whether it was ever tested.

You're delusional. The Sauron deck is an instant arch enemy. the whole deck is about board wiping and ramping out giant creatures before the opponents are ready. Living Death can change games quickly if you're falling behind. decree of annihilation can be used to draw what you need and fill the graveyard with stuff to revive with Sauron. Subjugation of hobbits can steal all creatures under 3 cmc giving you instant board advantage. the whole deck is based off playing aggressively.
