  • In this episode of Tough Rules & Cool Interactions, I will be revisiting the Combat Phase mini-series that I haven't directly revisited in around a year. Mostly because I suck at naming these videos and I've actually done lots of episodes that cover things that take place during the Combat Phase, but this one felt right to be labeled as such again. I recently posted on r/magicTCG and asked people some things that they still see bugging a lot of players, so I'll be covering one of the things I saw pop up on there.

The way I understand it is that even though you can predict that if you only deal 1 damage to the bear it will be doubled by the sawhorn nemesis, the game has no way of looking forward in that case so you still have to tell it "I deal 2 damage to the creature with 2 toughness." even if you know another effect will change it.
BQ: You can definitely choose to "ignore trample," which is not really ignoring it because trample just says that after you have dealt lethal damage to blockers you can choose to distribute excess damage however you would like between blockers and the blocking player. i.e. you can just deal all the excess damage to the blocking creature and gain all that life.

I've never really thought about ignoring trample. That's cool that the game supports you doing that.

Yeah, it doesn't happen often that you'd want to, but sometimes a player plays an Inkshield and you just really don't want to damage them.

I like how you're still able to link this to the new set. Including a doubler like Sawhorn Nemesis that just came out in MH3.

Thanks! I've actually been planning to cover this for a while as it is such a common thing players encounter, and the main reason I covered it now is from the post I had made on Reddit. I just got lucky that MH3 also had a new damage doubler for me to use as a timely reference.

Keep it up! Even these nice and easy episodes are fun to watch. It is nice for the newer players looking to learn the rules better. Sometimes things like layers are just too much for newer players to digest.

For sure, they can't all be brain bursters. But don't worry, I've got plenty more to cover.

@@ThisIsACommanderChannel Yeah, they did him dirty. At least we got the memes from it.

you can assign all 7 damage to the blocking creature. I know this thanks to Duskdale Wurm, one of the few cards in the game with reminder text for trample, it specifies that you MAY assign excess damage to defending player. Also I believe if for some reason you only wanted to gain 4 life (perhaps to keep your Death's Shadow swole) you could assign 4 damage to the creature and have 3 damage trample over.

Bonus question: yes. Trample damage (to a player) is optional.

Had a game the other day where we realized that even though one of the players had been knocked out of the game, they were still having lingering effects, which I hadn't thought about before. Sure, you can't clean up +1/+1 counters given out by a dead player, that makes sense; but it seemed counter-intuitive in a way that Mathas, Fiend Seeker's bounties were still on board after the player was removed. Had me wondering if there were any other weird edge cases like that where someone is "down but not out", so to speak.
(Yes, I may have lost because of this, my commander had two bounty abilities on it which gave the other remaining player enough life to survive and mill me out, haha)

Oh snap, that's pretty cool. I think we're getting another Bounty counter card from the Assassin's Creed set, maybe more. So who knows, maybe one of them will be worded in a way so that they do keep impacting the game after you die off.
