Food Storage Full Tour | 2021 Alaska Calendar

  • We give you the full tour of our food storage, including what's on our shelves, in the "fridge" and outside in the freezer, plus what supplies we store in our conex. Without the root cellar this year we faced the challenge of storing the majority of our garden produce inside our 320 sqft cabin. Canning, freezing, and air drying were the main methods of preservation we utilized this season.
    Our 2021 Alaska Calendar is available for purchase!

    Years ago I found a way to stop chickens from moulting. Chickens can't taste hot pepper. It does not bother them. Mixing a little cayanne pepper in with their feed, in the winter, they do not notice. It warms them up internally, and they don't molt at all, and they keep laying. I read about it in Mother Earth News, tried it, and it worked for me.... I loved your intro, the drone shots, and the still shots. It gives us a sense of what it is like to be there -- the beauty, the vastness, the inhospitable wildness. Your doing a calendar is a great idea. It looks fantastic. I am going to buy one. Thank you.

    • @aesbj9228
      @aesbj9228 Před 3 lety +3

      Interesting and surprising, given that birds don't have the inflammatory reaction to pepper as you say. If anything heats you up I would've imagined it was that reaction.

    • @petermaguire6280

    • @finnprepp2828
      @finnprepp2828 Před 3 lety +15

      Why would you stop chickens from moulting? They need new feathers to have a proper plumage.
      Just provide them with nutritious feed, enough light and warmth and they'll drop the feathers quickly and grow new, strong ones.

    • @colinkelley6493
      @colinkelley6493 Před 3 lety +6

      @@finnprepp2828 If you think of your chickens as pets and keep them for say four years, then what you said is correct. My chickens layed eggs straight through for 18-20 months, then I replaced and ate them. It was a more efficient and productive use of feed. I had fresh eggs every day of the year. I was able to have all the eggs I wanted with fewer chickens, and less feed. I am not sure this would work in Alaska but it worked for me.

Try to harvest them all before spring, as they aren’t good if they grow their tops again. This may work for you in your high tunnel. Heavy heavy mulching only in there. Love your channel. I'd like to suggest that you string heavy fishing line across the front of your beautifully laden pantry shelves as you are prone to earthquake tremors there. I learned the hard way in my own canning cellar here in Central California. Thankyou for your wonderful videos.

      I heard in your area it's code for hot water and propane tanks to be fastened with steel straps to the house framing in case of earthquakes.
      I've experienced two small tremors in my 53 years in Canada and find it fascinating you have to take extra precautions just in case.

    • @polkcellar
      @polkcellar Před 3 lety

      Yes it is code. We also anchor standing cabinets to the wall. We had a 6.7 earthquake here that destroyed much of the town. Many aftershocks since.

    Love seeing all the canning and dry storage. I still do a little, but don’t have the ground space to grow a whole lot. When we were kids, we lived in the house my dad built, which had a shelter in the basement. My dad turned it into a cold storage area, and we all helped with canning stuff from the garden. Can’t beat fresh or canned foods!

    have you guys considered doing a tiny addition on the front of your house just a bit larger than your deck? If you insulated that but didnn't connect it to your house with venting and put a window in it that lined up with your current window you could still get decent light into your place and you would get a lot of storage that would end up much colder than your house but likely not below freezing due to the heat coming off the house. Depending on how your deck is made you might be able to just detach it and move it to the new front of your house so you don't lose that space either. It would probably function a lot like the root cellar for november through march but be too hot in the summer for that purpose.

      I was thinking something similar. Perhaps they could build a pantry. They could regulate the temp fairly easily in the winter with a door. Your idea is cool too.

      You're correct, a door with a lock would help save all that food from getting ruined by earthquake damage. Considering we've had a couple of large (7.0) earthquakes in the last couple years proactive work is better than reactive.

    I can't understand how people get over whelmed by this. You two have the right way of thinking. I hear people say it's hard to get up everyday and have so much to do but that has to be so much better then waking up in the suburbs with nothing to do and slowly going insain with never having a choice in your life. You people are so grateful for your day and what it holds, your senible, l love how organised you are, it's a good life thank goodness you can see that, God love yous stay safe be happy were possible.
