Let me play psychic: It will release, reviewers will say they wished it was OLED but will say its a good LCD, will talk about the many reasons you should get one, etc. Two years later, "Nintendo is giving us what we wanted with this OLED version..." Rinse and repeat...

I'd be shocked if they wait the 2 years. No reason to not just offer both with the oled being like 200 dollars more. I think it would be cool if they also made that one a little more powerful to justify it's price but I doubt it.

No, removing joy cons would be just dumb. There are plenty of high selling games and fitness games that utilize this concept well, I'm not even talking about how comfortable you can share them with friends. They should make Joy Cons BETTER, not remove them.

I think it's important to remember that most Switch players are not display enthusiasts, or tech snobs for the matter. Most people will see an 8-inch screen, get hyped, buy the next Switch, and play whatever brightly colored Nintendo game happens to looks decent on an LCD.

honestly, the v1 switch that i have has a screen i'm totally content with. if i want beautiful colors on a rich display i'm going to play at home. playing on the go is more about the fact that i need something to do while i'm waiting for a dentist appointment or something. i don't doubt that the switch oled would be a better thing to look at, but honestly it's such a low priority issue that i don't care. i already don't take the thing around with me much anyway, and i bought a vita because it was much smaller, so the 8 inch screen wouldn't certainly help it in that regard but i'm all for it if it means more power for games.

I also don't use the Joycons when docked as I prefer the pro controller. However, the vast majority of the Switch user base doesn't use their Switch like that. People buying this as a family type system tend to entirely rely on Joycons. So dumping them isn't very practical for the largest part of their consumer base, especially at the cost of a higher price tag to include a single pro controller, where they'll have to buy at least one more... if not three if they want to play something like Mario Party. Then again, perhaps they make bigger Joycons or they continue use the Joycon, but it just doesn't dock with the unit. If it is bigger, it's going to be interesting to see how they handle this without screwing it up.

i will say that buying 3 sets of joycons is the same price as buying 3 pro controllers. the main difference would be the inability to use the individual joycons per player, for games like mario kart and mario party that only need what a joycon has. if we're being honest though, nobody actually enjoys using them like that... it's only good for small children. maybe if they made them bigger it would be nicer to hold.

The screen size also has game design implications. For a lot of titles, Nintendo was kind of wrestling with having to support big-screen playing but also make sure things weren't too small on the Switch Lite. Fonts and UI needed to be bigger. "Hidden objects" needed to be more obvious, harsher colors, bigger animations and sparkles and glows. It made things a little uglier on a big screen, for the sake of readability.
For some games, they did favor the TV experience and the text ended up really small even on the regular Switch. With an 8-inch screen, I hope the differences won't be as drastic, and it'll give them more room to be more subtle with their design sense.
Anyway, a generation of kids grew up using iPads. They'll absolutely be ready for an 8-inch handheld.
For me personally, I hardly ever used my Switch in handheld mode because I felt the screen was too small for the types of games I played on it, and my hands always cramped up from how uncomfortably small the controllers are in my big-ish hands. So if the controllers are also a little bigger, I'd welcome it though I wouldn't mind if they still skewed smaller as long as we still get a big player base to incentivize devs to give it decent priority.

I feel that making the switch 2 an all in one handheld will really limit it's versatility.

I wonder if they just make the dock (maybe it's a 4K dock now?) and external controls an add-on, and have it be compatible with the old dock and controllers. There's 100 million+ of the things out there and those first-year purchases are probably going to be dominated by existing users upgrading. Like the 3DS and the charger. Keeps the BOM down a bit, helps them hit $400 with a decently fast device, also makes the box smaller which counts for a fair bit when you're shipping millions of them. A bigger screen does a good job of conveying "this is a newer, significantly better thing" to existing owners, and we've all got docks and controllers.
