I think you need to try a civic or corolla to recalibrate how you see cars. Calling that a $50k interior even from 5 years ago is a crazy thing to say. A civic is less than $30k and the inside is of way higher quality than that.

The fact that you have to move things around on the touchscreen while driving is kinda terrifying. Like your ad spot is literally saying people should pay attention to the road when driving which you apparently can't do in this thing.
Seems like a major liability and class action lawsuit waiting to happen.
Normally, I'm not opposed to touch screens in cars (I prefer buttons, but screens are fine). It's interesting to see someone like Rivian that just made their UI a lot simpler with huge tap targets on buttons and bold (frankly kinda ugly, but bold) text so you don't have to take your eyes off the road. Then you've got Tesla putting mirrors on the screen.

@@chaosfenix I don’t because they happen automatically. I keep the temp set to 70 degrees and the auto wipers work fine. Though if I did want to adjust them I can just click the button on the stalk once for one wipe or click the stalk and use the scroll wheel to adjust the speed

Meh, depends on where you are. There are quite a few ranches and farms around where I live and trucks are almost always towing some piece of equipment or full of some material in the bed. It is weird to me how many trucks I see in the city though. Highly impractical in the city.

In most of Europe all these trucks don't make any sense. People don’t buy them because they are too big, impractical and absurd to the roads and cities here. 🤷🏻
You buy a $100k car from any brand and they'll make a show out of the delivery. The car will be detailed, paint corrected, centred on the showroom floor with a cloth and bowtie a person will show you all the features and Tesla just yep here you go bye

Yeah , the standard of finish is not good , we have dual motor long range in the family fleet , it managed to escape finishing without even being totally covered with top coat , water leaks in some of the lights , not something you would expect on a brand new 75k car.
And again despite having all the gimmicky electronics of an EV , they are still cheap in many ways , or the kind way of putting it minimalist on inside At least ours has stalks 😊.
That is absolutely wild that Tesla was clearly trying to pass of a second hand truck as a brand new truck.

lol I'm all for Tesla memes but that one was so absurd. It's literally not a problem at all-even when "car wash mode" is turned off.
It is perfectly fine if you don't use powerful detergents, if you clean it fast and dry it softly in the shade, and of course, don't have grease on your hands, don't drive it on salty roads etc etc. :))
@@snazzy Wasn't the meme started because someone's Cybertruck literally died going through a carwash? Same as phones back in the day were splash resistant but you could drop your phone and submerge it in water and it could be okay... or not... Luck of the draw.
@@Rankallthethings That headline was bait. The guy's Cybertruck wasn't bricked; only the screen stopped working temporarily due to a software error, and it was fixed by the next day. The car wash had literally nothing to do with it except that it happened a few hours after they had gone to a car wash. It's like if your car broke down after you had a sandwich for lunch and saying it was because of the sandwich.

“A truck for Tesla people.“ The irony is that if they had just made a Tesla truck that looked more like their cars, with similar exterior and interior styling, and regular (not stainless steel) body panels, it probaby would've been a far better car, far less polarizing, far less ugly. If they had simply made a truck with similar curves and contours to Tesla's cars (with normal aluminum and steel body panels that can actually be curved and contoured), following the Tesla car design language, it would have been a huge improvement over this rolling refrigerator.
I can't say i'm shocked by the build quality. Minimum Viable Product works great for SaaS where you can ship updates frequently, not so much in the 2nd biggest purchase in your life behind a house, which never changes after you buy it.
Yeah, again... it worked for a while because only Tesla was making EVs that were any good and the adoption curve is such that the early tail adopters tolerated it; however, the landscape has changed and there's some very luxurious EV options.
It also helps that in 'murica you can self certify these vehicles because of the class it's in. Which is... absolutely insane to me.
MVP and Agile have ruined software development and are now ruining physical products.
Why bother design anything when ‘requirements change’?

I agree with you, but in a pinch its handy-never needs to be charged and always stays in the car. I mostly don't like how kids can't really reach it from the car seat so the parent has to crane their head over the center console to start the video (because it can't be done from the main screen-even when parked).

That lack of steering feedback is really concerning in situations like hydroplaning or other dangerous conditions. Drivers can lose the ability to react and the car can lose control. Scary
It has feedback it just filters out the annoying parts.

16:13 -- Knew full well about the steer-by-wire setup, never dawned on me that Tesla would forgo any kind of force feedback in the wheel... I think it's a dubious choice at best for regular road driving, as not knowing when you're wheel is being pulled/pushed by potholes, curbs, berms, etc. definitely isn't great. But it for sure makes this thing a non-starter off road; knowing how the vehicle is reacting to the terrain you're putting it over is super important even just going down sand roads, mud ruts, whatever. To not have that instant feedback is asking for trouble.
Good thing the overwhelming majority of people who buy these will never take it anywhere more exciting than a gravel parking lot.
Yep. Given the wheelbase is insanely long, I didn't even try to take it an offroad because it can't be.
I had also assumed there'd be some force feedback; in a vehicle that seems to be made out of suboptimal design, this strikes me as the worst.

Sorry to say this, and having not owned a Tesla I understand if I am missing something (kinda like Windows not understanding Mac), but your last comments told me so much. Its a truck for Tesla people. That should never be a sentence. It's either a truck or it isn't.
If I said its a laptop for Apple people, that would suggest its not a good laptop, but one Apple fans would endure. A laptop needs to fulfil certain criteria, needs to be portable, fast enough to get the work you need done, be reliable, have enough storage for your needs and have good battery life. Price and aesthetics are secondary (but also important).
If you don't need those essential things, then you probably don't need a laptop.
A truck needs to have enough range while moving equipment to and from your worksite. Most reviews never cover this and give Tesla a free pass. Comfort and gadgets are also important, but not essential.
I also don't understand why so many things that could be manual and save precious battery aren't. I don't need a spaceship from 2500, I need a truck.
Software matters far more with laptops. So it really does make sense to call a laptop "for Apple people." I'm not going to just up and change the operating system and all the software I own just because Dell made a laptop that is 20% faster or had a battery that lasted a bit longer than the comparable Mac (they didn't, just a hypothetical). I want to use MacOS. Dell was never an option.
And Tesla has sold customers primarily on their software. Like it or not, the Cybertruck is going to do what most truck owners need it to do. Maybe not as well in some ways as another truck, but well enough. It really is like Apple. I hate to say that as an "Apple person" myself but not a Tesla person. I get it. I still think the hardware matters more in an automobile. I barely interact with the software in a car or truck.

99% of people (at least Americans) have trucks in order to be able to haul something once a year lol most people here are not buying trucks as a work vehicle or to do any truck related things. Those people annoy me and I don’t like trucks. Heck, a lot of people who say they need a truck would actually benefit more from having a utility truck.
We had a very similar experience on our delivery of the CT. Truck was dirty. Panels not aligned. We drove it home from Phoenix which is 220 miles from our home. The cheap mud flag fell off. Next the car stopped working. The dealer sent a tow to pick up. Next the service advisor said we must have drove over something which causes all of the coolant leak out, yet no liquid was on the ground. The issue was a bad chip which mistakenly reported no coolant in the car. It was in the shop for a week. The panel is still an issue as it is not aligned. So we have to take it back to the dealer. So disappointing to shell out 101 grand for this experience. Lastly agree seems cheap and poor QC.
The only thing I can now credit Tesla with is inspiring real auto manufacturers to do better. It will be nice when they fade off into the background where they belong. This was a great overview, but it still surprises me that at the end you can say it is 'a good vehicle and can recommend it' despite the laundry list of negatives that literally started before you even took possession of it.

Our customer experience during a model y purchase pushed me away from the brand. I am really glad you called out the nuances of how they leveraged you in this situation, incredibly frustrating and shows they just need to move the truck and could care less about you anymore and I genuinely hope they take this feedback and fix it. They’re charging way too much to treat customers like they do it’s really disappointing

My coworker was driving on the freeway near an off ramp, saw a dumpster in the middle for the road and put on her hazards and pulled over to call the police about this dangerous dumpster in the middle of the road. It was a stalled Cybertruck.
I knew the title was click bait before i even clicked the video. I would not be coming back to this channel.
The hype and the discussions about the Cybertruck pretty much always revolved around Musk and self-driving/electric tech. There was very little discussion about the actual car, features, amenities, advantages, design etc. That was my tip-off that it's not a car, but a brand that you're buying.
It goes both ways. Most people talking about it only have interest in talking about Elon, rather than the car, and usually have no interest in cars at all.
I guess this is why Elon himself said, “We dug our own grave with the Cybertruck.”
I imagine all the engineers responded with, “What’s all this *we* shit?!?”

I per-ordered night of reveal 5 years ago. Had the chance to get mine back in Dec.
BUT I per-ordered the base, single motor version. The idea of a simple electric truck for 40K was ideal in 2019. No way was I paying close to 3X that price. I ended up canceling my pre-order this month because I know I'll eventually get a used dual or tri for close to that new 50K price by the time it comes out. That is IF I still want one by that time.

Yes, they are. Lars Moravy talks about it in a video. They don’t have to have crossbeams for side impact crashes because the side panels there are 75% of the load. That’s why it’s only the side panels that are 9 mm bulletproof.
@@canieto1 Exoskeleton would mean that the outer panels are bearing the cars weight, which is not true. What you are describing is a kind of reinforcement of single components, not a structural element.

I have 3 cars, ICE with only dash display, Tesla with both displays , Tesla with only center screen. There is absolutely no additional feature or luxury in having a dash screen, I genuinely don’t care. Might actually prefer the center screen only, super clean and all infos you need (speed) is easily visible. No need for RPM, oil temp, engine warnings etc. doesn’t even have (or need) a handbrake (so also doesn’t need that light).

I feel like a big part of Tesla minimalist design is that Elon Musk imagines that Tesla is going to become driverless. So they skimp on important driving features like steering wheel controls for turn signals and windshield wipers. And who cares about the rearview mirror if the car's computer is driving? It's just an unnecessary expense. Of course, that all cuts costs and eliminates parts and so on. But the main reason isn't just costs. This is BS. There is no lag. It’s just the time it takes to go full side to side. It’s still much much faster than any human could turn the wheels using conventional steering.
I finally saw two of these last week in the wild. I did not think they could be any more hideous than the photos and videos. But seeing it in person proved me wrong. Just horrific looking vehicle. I would not buy this if it was 10 grand brand new fully loaded. Interior is just as hideous as the outside. All that before even getting into the quality or lackthereof.

This review was honestly much more positive than I expected, and much more positive than I’ve seen from a lot of other reviews. My takeaway was: there’s a lot of legitimately great features and cool technology, but overall too many critical flaws to be considered a good value and worth buying over its competitors.
That touch screen is a deal breaker.

it's kinda wild. I've gone from someone who wanted a Tesla model s, to was willing to go for a model 3 (cause i didn't want to spend 80k anymore), to a person who no longer really has an interest in a Tesla. I'd almost rather have a Genesis g70 over a 3. And any truck existing over a cybertruck. It's so not a truck for me. Way to many of the issues i couldn't stomach or the design decisions i couldn't tolerate.
A testament to just how low consumer expectations have sunk. I really like your channel, but the red flags you mention should logically be DEAL BREAKERS. That lag you mention could potentially cause a collision, and I was taking note of all the places where the cheap build quality will likely cause an early demise of the truck's usability. I don't know how anyone could recommend this vehicle, especially given that it is possibly the worst of the Tesla's at retaining any value. There is no reason to believe that the value will bottom out given that there appears to be little progress on Tesla's CRM or evolution of design.

Imagine paying a 100k for a brand new car and the dealership hands you a dirty one. I have never ever bought a new car without the dealership washing it and giving me an opportunity to inspect it before handing it over! and I live in what Americans like to refer to as a third world country!
I tried to query that but he said he reviewed the purchase experience that Tesla sells. I guess a Cybertruck purchase is just small change if you're highly successful. The rest of us might feel quite differently which is, for me, the flaw in these kinds of videos. The other factor these reviews never seem to deal with is buying a car from a person like Musk. Maybe the vibe around him is different in the US to the UK. For me it's like golfers continuing to play at Trump's golf courses - I just couldn't do it.

It was a fair review in terms of highlighting the good and bad, but any other person would have been filled with buyers remorse. I mean, how many people can drop $100k on something and be like "Eh, guess it's not for me."
The early frustrations in the video should have been represented more in the summary. It's almost like he forgot about all that after reviewing the steer by wire.
Riddle me this: You head out on a short day trip with a child in the back seat. A dog jumps out and you do an emergency brake.
Ether your metal cup in the holder or the child's iPad flies forward and smashes the main screen. It's cracked, it's blank, no touch input.
You are 50 miles away from anything. How far up the 💩 creek are you without that screen? How long and how much are you up for a replacement?
How long do you think you can tolerate driving the cyberjoke (if at all possible) with a non-responsive screen??

As a current Model Y owner, I will be getting both R1 Rivians in the next year or two. I need a truck and a larger SUV and Cybertruck is just not it.
I don't like trucks or suvs but both the Rivian R1T and R1S are SO GOOD I'd absolutely consider buying either if I had the money.
For whatever its worth, the new gen 2 R1 is amazing.
Check the Silverado EV as well, that's been getting a lot of praise.
Rivians are nice. Only true alternative to Tesla. But you need to acknowledge the non-zero chance that the company may not exist anymore at some point in the future. Every car company went bankrupt except Ford and Tesla, and only the big lobbyists like GM will get a bailout. Fisker, Lucid, Faraday, Nikola, Canoo and most all others will very likely assemble at the EV graveyard.
The way Tesla handles deliveries seems indicative of a larger problem with how the company treats its customers - it doesn't like or respect them. Tesla expects its customers to feel like it's doing them a favor by *allowing* them to buy this 6 figure vehicle that costs more and does less than what was promised 5 years ago, and what's unfortunate is that the Tesla fanbase is so loyal that a lot of customers seem to think that's okay.

There is no lag. This is just the total time it takes to go full left to right. Which is still much faster than any human could turn with a conventional steering.
This was one of the best Cybertruck reviews I've seen. Clearly from someone who actually drove the thing for more than an afternoon and filled with detail that most people would actually care about. Really good stuff.

This seems like it's a truck for wealthy non-truck EV people. It's super niche. Like, I would totally drive a Model 3, but this thing is huge. I would hate this.

Thank you for one of the most thoughtful and well produced car review. Something I always admire about your stuff is you never chase to be the first video out, just the best and you hit the mark almost every time!
One thing you showed in the video, which I think was worth calling out in particular, is that you have to use the touchscreen to go into reverse (and back into drive). As with the rear view mirror, it's bad design at best. I get the minimal aesthetic Tesla is going for, with minimal physical controls, but having to constantly take your eyes off the road to manoeuvre could be really dangerous.
He didn't say anything about selling the car though.... Just got to the end of the video. Confused by the name now..
I hate the ‘everything via the central touch screen’ “clean design’ principle. I liked Tesla cleaning up the interior of cars massively, and a lot can move onto screen, but physical buttons that dynamically change in function depending on the moment are far superior, as are stalks on round steering wheels and physical air vents that enable you to position the flow where you want.
This was part of why I decided to move away from Tesla after half a decade,. Because the Model 3 Performance when I got one in early 2019 was the best car in the world, but not is dated and has not improved at all.
Truth is you get far better luxury and quality from other manufacturers, plus better customer service. I opted for a Hummer EV and loving it.. I also only use it as a daily local driver, because EV’s are terrible for road trips versus gas. Don’t let anybody pretend otherwise.

Sad thing is my partner just bought a $7000 used car a few months back, and they did a free detail and paint correction. And that thing sold for only a bit over what they got it for.
Tesla doesn’t need to clean the cars to sell them, they can’t make enough of them. Dealerships have them sitting on the lot for months and have no other choice than try everything to make their crappy offerings look shinier than they are. Dealerships are dead, and nobody is gonna miss them.

As much as I want this truck, I also can’t stand how popular it has become with the fanboys.
I have plenty of brand new trucks over the years and not entirely sure if I will except and take delivery off the beast when the time comes.
I’ll lose my $1000 deposit, but I think I’ll be happier with another TRX or the new RHO From Ram.

I've got to say that I agree about the delivery experience. I took delivery of a new Model X a few months ago and, while I sincerely appreciated how quickly delivery went, the experience was trash. I didn't get to look at the car beforehand and they basically just sent me out into a dark parking lot with the keys after I'd handed them my check. That said, I also bought a Chrysler last year and that experience was worse. Hours at the dealership (despite having ordered the car and scheduled the appointment), dishonest dealership personnel, and a car that was still dirty. My Rivian delivery experience was decent but it had a number of issues at delivery. The only great new (or used) car purchase delivery experience I've had was actually at Cadillac, which I didn't necessarily expect.

The Tesla customer experience is a trillion times better than what you experience at any dealership. With now more folks following Tesla’s lead, hopefully the horrible experience of going to a dealer is a thing of the past soon.
