The Battle of Okinawa happened in 1945 with Japan fighting against the United States, fast forward 79 years later and the two forces are now fighting alongside each other defending the same soil. What a crazy world we live in.

There are people all over the world who feel the same way.
In Japan, there are people who post on Twitter mistaking armored vehicles for tanks, and they are often pointed out by well-informed people.
I am gonna sound like one but that's not a Stryker, it's an LAV-25 IFV which is only used by the USMC. Strykers are used by the Army.
APC? IFV? Nah tank. Potato tomato.
Such an incredible episode man on an increasingly concerning topic. At times living in Japan makes you feel a million miles away from many of the issues in the world today, almost like a bubble. Then you remember, the country is right on the doorstep of several potential massive, unthinkable conflicts and this kind of preparation is essential, if merely only as deterrence. Let's hope a sequel: "I Fought with the Japanese Army" is an episode that need not ever materialise. Keep up the great work mate, this was a brilliant piece of journalism.

When WWII ended, it wasn't like turning off a light switch - horror to good neighbors - I was born in the middle of 1951, and throughout my preteens war was a real presence in our lives. My father's confusion at meeting ex soldiers from the " other side " that " seems like a good guy," my older sister's real fear of nuclear attack, hundreds of war movies, the Korean War didn't help, so many things to try to figure out. Seeing a collection of photographs from concentration camps in my early teens was transformative. And war never stops. The human race doesn't deserve this incredible world we are born on. The USA and so many other nations seem willing to let psychopaths have incredible power while the world burns around them. Even chimpanzees in the wild are learning how to make rudimentary weapons and wage war on neighboring groups.
I swore to never pay for skins, but I may make an exception for this.

I am a resident of Okinawa. Most Okinawans are not aware of the fact that Okinawa is an important area that is targeted even without the bases. I think this is what complicates the base issue.
With all respect how is this possible after what happened on the island in ww2? Surely the people living there must realise the US didnt invade the island just for shits n giggles right?
@@justarandompally He probably meant that they felt that the base being constructed would make them an even more obvious target than they already are. That is why the lady who was interviewed in the video said, “It’s not good, but it’s necessary,” because even though they are now protected from the threat that they feel quite certain existed before, the base construction made that threat even more certain.

I appreciate the perspective you and the production team brought to this story. As someone who is Japanese and born and raised here, I agree and feel there's a fine line between a military buildup for deterrence and a buildup for provocation. The line from the episode speaks to me: "If war breaks out, the first ones to die will not be the politicians who decided to go to war." While I can see the need for a defensive miltary, I hold deep concern when I see who's making these decisions.

The later portion of this video on the islanders’ perspective was so heavy, but necessary. Thank you Johnny for showing the perspectives of the people and not just making a lighthearted video about training with the military. As a southeast asian whose own grandparents barely survived Japanese occupation during WWII, these histories are not something we should readily forget.

It's ironic that the island Japan is arming up is the same island they invaded 150 years ago. Okinawa, known as Ryuku kingdom had close ties with China back then.

From a history of battles, warriors and conflicts, present-day Japanese people are the complete opposite - conflict avoidance, seeking peaceful solutions, being non-confrontational - those are all instilled from a young age. That’s also possibly the reason history lessons about WW2 are sanitized. As a result, Japanese people now are some of the most peaceful and non-aggressive people I know. This was done to basically change the country from one ruled by the military to a civilian-driven one like the US. It worked too well, I think. They don’t want to think of even the idea of war. This is why it’s hard to convince regular Japanese people I talk to that arming the JSDF is not inviting war, but preparing for the future - which can be seen as increasingly worrying given China’s recent actions.

I have waited for this video from you for so long! This is a topic that doesn't really get discussed here in the west that often. I'm so happy you can shed some light on this situation from both the JSDF and especially local prospective. People tend to forget that there are people living on these islands, some of whom can still feel the scars of war. If a war does break out, which all of us hope doesn't happen, the people who live on these islands will more then likely end up in the crossfires. As someone who has studied Japan's history by japanese textbooks for foreigners, I could also see the kind of... blatant downplay. However something that just changed my mind was a documentary I saw where japanese disabled people were forcibly put into surgery by the Impery of Japan to make them infertile. That's when I realized the government could, and in this case just turned agaisnt its on people. You can see the same thing in Germany: jewish people were, also, germans. And quite some non-jewish germans worked agaisnt - or bore intentions to be agaisnt - the Nazi government. Well, I just want to say that the goverment doesn't represent the people - at least not all of them. And as said in video, most of the bodies were of women and children in a poor island. They didn't know much of what was happening.
I should only directly disagree with you in one thing: they should be held responsible, just not be held accountable. As a latin in a country that suffered such an aggressive colonisation too, I learnt that there's something called historical repair (just translated it literally, don't know the word in english sorry) and Japan's (as european countries) are really far from it.

From the point of view of a historian, those questions are so crucial and we still don't have an answer. Deterrence might bring forth an attack, or stop it in its tracks. It depends on your diplomatic posture, that of the enemy and up to which point they're ready to go. All these people's emotions and opinions are valid, and there is no right answer. We keep fighting over the bones of the dead, we keep sacrificing some for survival... It's so complicated, but this incredible piece of journalism shows it well. Thank you for your work. I hope this war never comes to pass.

There is a lack of proper knowledge of threats in Japan, with many reports critical of the SDF's deterrence efforts due to past history.
Of course, the past must not be forgotten, but it is also the responsibility of the nation to protect the current population.
As a Japanese citizen, I sincerely hope that the Self-Defense Forces will finish its role as a "sword without drawing" (that can easily change depending on the decisions of the "continent"...).
Personally, I am amazed at the Japanese Ministry of Defense for allowing CZcamsrs to interview them... It very much shows the changing times.

But over the years most of we East Asians have learnt from recent geopolitics that in order to prevent a war, you need to make yourself stronger militarily. It’s a sad but tried truth. The notion of not provoking your potential adversary by not preparing yourself for war is not only naïve but also dangerous. One thing that local residents don't reveal or don't know is that it doesn't have to be a war to take over another country's island. For example, Indonesia once lost islands due to disputes with other countries and the current government is starting to strengthen or simply create small military bases on the outer islands, which are numerous, just to show the country's presence or claims on these islands.

@@Video2Webb I'm not overly idealistic enough to believe that military force isn't a proven way to enforce peace. There's definitely a place for it. But I also think you can't rely heavily on might to make right, because then you end up in situations like the United States' where - due to their immense military - they tend to put forward the stick 90% of the time that a carrot would work better instead.
Both aspects of diplomacy need to be used depending on the situation, but when you heavily invest in your military you typically try and show that it was worth all the billions you spent on it. And when things actually come to blows, governments need to remember that the winning force can't just leave as soon as things are over - the military has to be remembered as, by far the best, forms of destruction _and_ reconstruction. Without the latter, the former has no meaning other than wanton carnage.

@@ojisankusai I think if you look modern history, the US overwhelmingly uses diplomacy and other soft methods to achieve its goals rather than military force. The big exception is Iraq 2003, and there were certainly ulterior motives behind that.

As of the latest reports, there were more than 127 cases involving U.S. military personnel in Japan, particularly in Okinawa, over the past few years. For example, between 2017 and 2019, the NCIS investigated at least eight sexual offenses that weren't initially reported to Congress (Veteran Benefits & Jobs). Just recently an 12 yo were sexually assaulted by American soldiers

The media houses like bbc, DA, VOA, and private media like cnn fox etc of that country, and its allies, will never talk about anything wrong done by their military. But the same media and influencers will never stop reporting on something wrong done by countries like russia china saudi arabia india etc. developing nation. I know a few third-world countries get humiliated by the same media and are presented as the worst places on earth. But in reality, those countries aren't as unsafe or terrible as Western media makes them out to be. Anyway, if you wanted, you could have made fully dedicated videos on topics like this, but you chose not to. You would have done it if the military of countries russia or china were involved.

Did you see anything particular secretive shown in this video? One of the officers interviewed came from the JSDF PR office. The content shown is only what they’re willing to show, and I’ve no doubt that similar training videos can be found elsewhere publicly

Why wouldn't Japan be welcoming the US allies? It was opportunistic during its Imperial era (it was allied with Britain during the Russo-Japanese War, and fought Germany in WW1), and it's trying to be opportunistic with convenient allies now.
I live in one of the many islands that make up Okinawa and within the past 3 years the central government approved and has constructed a military base on this island. Now this Island, Ishigaki, plays host to less than a thousand JSDF troops. Quite frankly, it is only those that understand the implications of living so close to a military base are concerned because if Ishigaki wasn't an obvious target before now, well it is now.
